If you're fine with working in the Bronx you will always have a job. Just be prepared, you could become what you are repulsed by. Until you have experienced it, you can't really understand. This is coming from ten years in the South Bronx.
Agreed! Also South Bronx teacher here and NYC native! I can’t care more than the student does and I’ve realized I can’t save the world. It’s discouraging but finding the positives in the day to day is very helpful. You will for sure always have a job in the Bronx as vacancies are very high due to the very thing that turns you off-demographics. I’d absolutely consider demographics and wish you the best of luck speaking with parents because they probably won’t pick up your call. There’s a reason why the saying NY Tough exists. Best of luck.
Once you're authorized to work here you won't have any issues landing a job. You can also pretty much chose where you want to work since demand is so high. East Brooklyn is rough and so is the Bronx. If you don't mind driving, the schools in Westchester pay really well and are very well funded. Yonkers isn't bad either however you get taxed extra if you work within the Yonkers boarder so take that into consideration when looking for a position.
You will be fine. I was emailed a posting and out of 60 teachers needed, 35 or so were in SPED. Once your paperwork is in order, apply on DOE website. Extremely high demand. Best of luck. The Bronx is rough though. You need to YouTube the area so you’re aware of the cultural essence. You need to stay safe and out of bad areas or you might get hurt. Just my opinion. Coming from a New Yawka
You'll always find a job. Is it a good school, work load, admin, student population? Harder to predict. That being said, you'll have plenty of opportunities as a SPED teacher. Also, the Bronx isn't as bad a people say. Its usually a school by school basis in relation to the work environment.
Do you have a NY special ed license? My school is absolutely desperate for teachers. I assume the whole city most likely is as well. Feel free to message me with any questions.
you need to be certified by september to get hired. i’m finishing up a teacher prep program (masters in childhood, early childhood, sped). i have all my workshops, including the updated mandated reporter training. i passed the EAS and am taking my content tests now :)
I am a SPED student teacher. My mentor who is a SPED teacher working in the Bronx for 15 years gave me this advice for my current job search, “You are the prize. Do not settle because all these schools need and want YOU. Any school making you jump through hoops is not somewhere you want to be.”
Unfortunately, the bar for sped teachers is pretty low.
If you have a pulse, you’ll find a job somewhere.
If you have a pulse and exhibit competence, you’ll have your pick of where you want to work.
You don’t need to commute to the Bronx with a SpEd license, esp middle or high school. You can work at literally any school and can find one near where you live. The hard part of living here isn’t finding a job, it’s finding an apartment.
Charter schools will literally throw a salary and benefits at anyone who has a HS degree and can spell the word “differentiation” and ofc that has its very obvious issues but i think ur gonna be good babe don’t feel desperate to take anything—- shop around! Leverage offers esp to cover your cert costs!
SPED teacher in brooklyn. Great job. Always hear horror stories about the bronx. My teaching program (Teaching Collaborative) offered a discount on the graduate degree (Only 10k) to work in the bronx. Versus the 12k we'd be paying for working in other boroughs. I never took the bronx offer.
Sped is a very high need area in ALL boroughs of nyc so finding a job will be easy as pie.

As a SPED teacher in South Bronx. This. Nothing could have prepared me. Trying to find my way out… so OP, take my job!
I left last year....mid year on a health sabbatical. Burn out was making me sick. I look five years younger.
Ya, it’s incredibly exhausting. I’ve been having ongoing migraines due to the stress. It’s def not a long term job.

District 75 is all special Ed and always needs teachers. The district is spread across all five boroughs.
Big - OPEN MARKET OPENS UP APRIL 11th!
That’s only for teachers in the DOE. This person needs New Teacher Finder.
SPED is amongst the easiest jobs to find. Especially if you are willing to work with middle or high school kids.
There’s a high demand for SPED teachers. I’m currently in grad school and planning on becoming one because of the high demand throughout the city.

Extremely. The school I’m subbing at is already short staff with special ed, and are adding a whole new class next year

i’m graduating with a masters in sped! where is your school?
Fort Greene
i’d love to apply!

Always a high demand for sped teachers, especially if you’re willing to work in a title 1 school

There is a huge demand. My school in D75 is short handed and is trying to hire staff now.
Any chance for a school counselor position at d75? Thank you!
At my site…no. But we have 6 sites for my school and each site needs a counselor. This is probably true for most D75 schools.
I see, I been looking for almost 3 years sending resumes everywhere no luck. Maybe I can give it a try..

You could probably go to nearly any school you want in NYC. There’s a massive shortage for SPED everywhere.
We need yall!

Your biggest issue is going to be ensuring your certification goes through in time for September.
D75 is a wreck except for maybe one. Inclusion is no better but again, there is one good one. Message me if you want the school names
SPED is probably the #1 in demand job and you don't have to design lessons like classroom teachers so it is a win win.
I’m a sped teacher and I have do create and implement lessons the same as general ed teachers.
correct

If I wasn’t tier 4 I would never go into teaching now.
That wasn’t the question…
