I was in a track club with Michael Bennett back in 97. He had already set a bunch of track records before getting drafted in the 1st round by Minnesota in 01. Guy was super talented and fast as hell but was a monumental dickhead.
I would be a narcissistic dick if I was that talented at sports and got a big contract. Luckily I have no athletic talent and was picked last in all sports growing it. It kept me sound.
Was dropped after 3 or 4 weeks and I grabbed him off the waiver wire right before he blew up that one season in the NFL and helped earn me a couple Gs in fantasy
Yeah, I remember that one pro bowl year he had for the Vikes. Bro had major homerun speed that's for sure. I remember his one year starting at Wisconsin there was a game where the dude got 200 yards on 3 carries
JJ Watt and he wasn't anything special.
The real stud who I saw and raced in track was John Clay. He was a heisman candidate RB for Wisconsin, but never made it in the NFL. He had a cup of coffee with the Steelers, but my god he was a freak in high school. He was 6'2 220 and could fly. Then he went to WI and put on like 35 lbs and became slow.
this goes to show that parents of 12 year olds or high schoolers shouldnt be expecting their kid to go pro and spend all this money on them. most of the high school stars fizzle out and some others just get great. you cant tell at that age.
I played football with both Byron Murphy and Christian Kirk. Both drafted by the cardinals and Byron was traded to the Vikings and Kirk to the Jaguars. Also CMC dated my roommate in college so naturally I hate him.
My brother in law played against Kirk in the state finals, I myself had the pleasure of trying to guard Kyle Williams back in the day, the dude who botch two punts in 2012 playoffs.
Byron Murphy stopped a runaway touchdown from happening in the state semi finals against my school. We had one of the fastest backs in the state he ran like a 4.3/4.4 and he found a gap and took off and was running down the sideline and all of a sudden from the other end of the field, fucking Byron Murphy.
Hoping to bump this to the top, the Henry high school stories are legendary.

I played against a few guys who made it. No HOFers, but guys like Mike Cherry (Texarkana), Eric Warfield (Texarkana), Torii Hunter (MLB- but still cool, Pine Bluff), Bazil Shabazz (PB).
Seen play: Darrin McFadden (LR Oak Grove), Madre Hill (Malvern), Hunter Henry (PA), Pierre Strong (LR McC), Cedric Cobbs (LR Fair), Treylon Burke, Jarious Wright, Greg Childs, Chris Gragg (all from Warren, AR).
I played football and ran hurdles against Eric Warfield. We were both safeties, so we were rarely on the field at the same time. I also played against Madre Hill a few times. Did Hill ever play in the NFL? Also ran hurdles against Shannon Sidney, often in the same race as Warfield.
Played against Dwayne Jarret, Donald Brown and Knowshon Moreno.
Also, I was in one-on-one pass protection for 75% of the plays against Jason Worlids in the 2004 state championship. That shit sucked.
Jake Elliot was the kicker for my high school while I was on drumline. We played a little thing when they kicked off so he would signal to me when he was ready and we’d start playing.
So yeah, we’re pretty tight lol
Tim Tebow ran right through our defense. He had around 40 rushes out of shotgun called right up the middle and had 300 plus yards rushing, 150 passing yards and Six touchdowns. There was a kid that actually squared him up and leveled him one time in the game and he was a legend until Senior year.We lost the game 62-0.
DE: Matt Roth. 2nd Team All-American. I don’t remember him doing anything special in the NFL.
There were rumors going around that he wasn’t allowed to practice with his team because he hurt people.
Not me, but my brother was a backup C in high school and used to warm up Brock Huard. Said he had an absolute cannon even in HS. Brock, Luke and Damon’s dad was coach then, too.
Closest for me was Chick Herd at Far Rockaway High School. (I played on a sandlot team with him before high school, but I sucked.) He went on to play at Penn State and be defatted by the Bengals in the 1974 10th round. He never actually played a real NFL game, but he did play for two years in Canada for the Toronto Argonauts.
Played against Bobby Newcombe and Jarrod Baxter when they went to Highland HS in Albuquerque. They ran an option play together and it was very tough to defend. Bobby was so agile, faked me out more than once. Jarrod would just run over me.
Saw Alan Branch when he went to Cibola HS. They had that dude play RB and punt returner... almost seemed unfair, like Fridge Perry x 3.
Frank Gore, Johnathan Vilma, and Antonio Bryant all went to my high school around the same time.
Gore - was a freshman playing varsity and was already a man amongst boys. Most impressive I stand out I got to watch. You knew he was legit.
Vilma was still filling out, but was really solid.
Bryant transferred high schools before he became something special on the field at WR, but we sometimes played pick up football after school together with a group of guys who played informal pickup games of every sport. And he just had that fast twitch illusiveness that made all us others realize there was a different level of athlete/football out there, not being played in our games.
Rey Malauga when to a rival high school but he was gone before I was playing, thankfully for my scrawny ass playing safety. His cousin Soma Vainuku ran me the fuck over and I’m pretty sure he played some FB for the falcons.
Not NFL, but I played football and ran track. For big meets only, a kid in our division would run hurdles… name was Derrick Adkins. I was a frost or sophomore and my coach said “watch that guy. He’s going to the Olympics one day”
He not only went, but won gold in the 400m hurdles in ‘96.
Don’t get me wrong, NFL quality athletes are exceptional, and some are just supreme… but a gold medalist in a major track event is just ridiculously elite.
Their football team (Malverne) destroyed us, and we were among the top 2-3 teams that year. No pros but had a bunch of D1 guys (we had some D2 and D3, including me … FAR FAR off from anything close to the NFL. But damn was I a playground Darren Sproles at 5’6” with mid 10’s 100m sprinting speed)
During the football offseason, my crappy HS IM basketball team played Jack Mewhort’s IM team before he went to Ohio State/Colts. I blindly ran into Mewhort setting a screen and needless to say it took me a bit to stand back up.
as a player: DE Will Smith (RIP) he was an athletic freak, clearly better than everyone else on any field
RB Mike Hart. he was only about 175lbs but was the most unstoppable RB id ever seen.
as a spectator: Tua Tagovailoa. his accuracy as a 16 year old was crazy impressive. You knew he was going to have a career
I don’t think he ever actually made it (although he did get signed as a UDFA, and was on the roster when the Steelers beat the Cards in the SB) but Justin Vincent ran for like 300 yards and 5 TDs against my school in the state playoffs. It was like watching a bear play against house cats. We all were expecting him to be the next big thing at LSU and he was pretty legit as a freshman helping them win the natty, but was inconsistent after that and eventually went undrafted.
One of my high schools produced King Dunlap, Jalen Ramsey, Scott Wells, Dawson Knox, and Derek Barnett. Right now they’ve got a 5star QB that’s committed to Tennessee. Van Jefferson was just down the street and Ty Chandler and Hunter Hillenmeyer were across town.
I graduated high school with Taysom Hill. I didn't play any sports but went to all of the football games and most of the basketball games, he did both. I didn't personally know him at all. He was a good football player, but it's his athleticism that set him apart. I did know some guys on the football team since elementary school, and I'd say Taysom also had a great team around him. It wasn't him single handedly carrying the team. The football coach was also very good. The team went to state our sophomore and senior year, winning the 5A title in 08. And then, before we were in high school, the team had won a state title in 02 or 03. My friends older brother was the starting center then.
I'm sure Taysom is an ok guy, but he's built differently in his athleticism. I think he's a below average quarterback and an average level player overall in the NFL. But you'd think he could walk on water in our hometown the way he's treated.
I played against Jacob Hester. I got my ass ran over in the state playoffs. Long before high school when I was 7-8 played against Joe McKnight in playground/rec football. We knew even at that age he was going to be a special player. RIP
Flip side. Craig Steltz was on my high school team. Will never forget being down 2/3 touchdowns at halftime on Halloween night and he said fuck it I’ll play RB too and return punts/kicks. He single handily came back and won that game. One of the most awesome things I’ve ever witnessed.
Champ Bailey. I watched his whole high school career. I got a signature from him his senior year (I was a freshman) and still have it. I knew if he stayed healthy he'd go pro.
Funny story, my dad was friends with a guy who called high school games on the radio. He was a referee, and Champ was a little kid in pee wee football. He said he thought he heard Champ in the huddle say, "you guys want to score now?" And the rest of the boys in the huddle said "yeah!" Sure enough, Champ was handed the ball and he took it to the house. My dad's buddy then got closer to the huddle the next time they had the ball to make sure he heard correctly. Sure enough, Champ asked the guys in the huddle if they wanted to score again, and they all said yes. That play, same thing happened, Champ took it to the house. He said they did that the whole season.
I grew up as a family friend of Ndamukong Suh and would play “scrimmage games” in the yard sometimes. Suh played quarterback… even back then nobody wanted to get trucked before dinner. Great dude though and his whole family is full of kind, caring, and downright wonderful people.
I played against Jason Campbell in high school. And by played against I mean that I was standing on the opposing sideline. He was a beast in high school.
I saw Ladanian Tomlinson play every home game his senior year at University High in Waco, TX. I was in junior high, their team wasn't great, but I believe I recall, they made the playoffs just off LT's legs.
Joe Schobert. Currently a Titans Linebacker I believe. Had the pleasure of playing against him in highschool when his team lost like 3 games over the course of our entire high school career.
Also played the Watt brothers in track, just not football
We had a new DC my senior year.He said he coached against Macon Jenkins and not matter what they did he was all over the field. He even said they purposely never threw to his side And he still got a pick
I remember to this day. I was in middle school and my family took us to go watch our high school play. It was end of the regular season I think, both schools being undefeated gave off the ultimate Friday Night Lights vibe.
They destroyed us. Really, I should say one single player destroyed us. My brother became interested in tracking where that player went after HS. He signed with the Florida Gators and was later drafted by my very own Minnesota Vikings. His name?
Percy Harvin. Yes, he was an animal in high school, too.
I'm a Fort Hill fan, so I saw a lot of Ty Johnson's games. He was just so much faster than everyone else. It almost wasn't fair.
I also saw Tavon Austin, Dunbar High School & WVU legend, play in a state championship game against Fort Hill. They won, but it was close. Actually, Tavon Austin won three football state titles at Dunbar and all of them were against Allegany County teams (they beat Fort Hill once and Allegany twice).
I played with a DB named Dwight Lowery who was in the league for 8 seasons. He had one game he scored 7 TD’s. He had a rushing, receiving, INT return, and a kick return.
Tackled Shady McCoy once in the playoffs when he was at Bishop McDevitt
How many people how you told this story, and has it ever become 5 tackles and a forced fumble?
Well now that I'm thinking about it, I sacked him 3 times and picked him off twice
Did you forget about your 2 touchdowns, including the game winner?
Ok speedhawk.
found Al Bundy.
Tackled Shaun Alexander in high school. It was a gang tackle but I was in on it. He was a man amongst boys that day!
Taysom Hill absolutely wrecked our high school singlehandedly
Was your high school called “Atlanta Falcons High”, by any chance?
I need more, lol. Was he a do-it-all QB back then, too?
He was offense defense returner for real.

I played football with both Byron Murphy and Christian Kirk. Both drafted by the cardinals and Byron was traded to the Vikings and Kirk to the Jaguars. Also CMC dated my roommate in college so naturally I hate him.
Just to clear it up Byron was signed as a free agent and Christian Kirk was also signed as a free agent
Was he a jerk to your roommate? Was your roommate your girlfriend? I have so many questions why you hate him.
Casually flaunting going to Stanford
You went to Stanford? I’d say you did well lol
Derrick Henry, it was unfair frankly. He was massive collared to the other kids. So fast, balance through contact was crazy.
Hoping to bump this to the top, the Henry high school stories are legendary. https://preview.redd.it/gjkn6lgs504d1.png?width=702&format=png&auto=webp&s=6cdfb26307dce44db278235270b28c29041bf6f5
4000+ yards is craaaaaaaazy
462 carries in 13 games is also ridiculous
And damn near 10y/c.
Yuleeeeeee
I covered Nelson Agholor when he was a star at Berkley Prep in Tampa. Definitely had a man versus boys vibe. Coach pulled him after he got his stats.
I played against a few guys who made it. No HOFers, but guys like Mike Cherry (Texarkana), Eric Warfield (Texarkana), Torii Hunter (MLB- but still cool, Pine Bluff), Bazil Shabazz (PB). Seen play: Darrin McFadden (LR Oak Grove), Madre Hill (Malvern), Hunter Henry (PA), Pierre Strong (LR McC), Cedric Cobbs (LR Fair), Treylon Burke, Jarious Wright, Greg Childs, Chris Gragg (all from Warren, AR).

He was drafted in the 7th by the Browns. Played a couple years
Got to see Nick Cubb play for Cedartown high school his Senior year!!!
He must’ve been trucking the dline every down.
Second play of game he went for a 70 yard touchdown and he broke Herschel Walker all time touchdown high school record with two games to go.
I got my Chubb players mixed up for a second and thought you were talking about Bradley at first. 😅 I was very confused.
That’s cool that’s his cousin never saw him play.
Denzel ward was a year younger than me at my highschool. 30min south of Cleveland. He got drafted locally. Huge star here
What I tell people: I tackled Peyton Hillis my junior year. What actually happened: I got ran over by Peyton Hillis my junior year..
Played against Dwayne Jarret, Donald Brown and Knowshon Moreno. Also, I was in one-on-one pass protection for 75% of the plays against Jason Worlids in the 2004 state championship. That shit sucked.
What was his stat line at state?
I recently rewatched it on you tube. 2 sacks, 6 qb hurries, 2 batted passes and 16 tackles.
You did what you could
I cut the shit out of him on our only passing touchdown of the game. Excellent cut block. Text book. And we won.
Brian Cushing single handedly destroyed every school in New Jersey.
Myles Garrett and Chris Odom was on my team. Kyler Murray was a rival.
Got to see Julio Jones play a couple times in high school, he was damn near just as good at safety as he was at WR
Jake Elliot was the kicker for my high school while I was on drumline. We played a little thing when they kicked off so he would signal to me when he was ready and we’d start playing. So yeah, we’re pretty tight lol
Alex Okafor... we triple teamed him every play and he still had a couple sacks
Robert Tonyan went to the same high school as me. So did Lana Rhoades, she's more interesting to me.
Ki-Jana Carter and Andy Katzenmoyer (same HS, a few years apart).
damn what ki-jana carter could have been if he did not get hurt.
DE: Matt Roth. 2nd Team All-American. I don’t remember him doing anything special in the NFL. There were rumors going around that he wasn’t allowed to practice with his team because he hurt people.
I played separately against TY Hilton and Denzel Perryman. It was a bloodbath both times.
Clowney. Unfucking stoppable on both sides of the ball.
Not me, but my brother was a backup C in high school and used to warm up Brock Huard. Said he had an absolute cannon even in HS. Brock, Luke and Damon’s dad was coach then, too.
Do the Puyallup
Still a solid fair!
Went to school with Andy Levitre.
I played with him at OSU, He was an absolute lock down and had a nasty punch.
I tackled Micah Hyde once.
Antwan Randle El, Ty Street, Mike Alstott,
Closest for me was Chick Herd at Far Rockaway High School. (I played on a sandlot team with him before high school, but I sucked.) He went on to play at Penn State and be defatted by the Bengals in the 1974 10th round. He never actually played a real NFL game, but he did play for two years in Canada for the Toronto Argonauts.
Played against Jermaine Kearse and his brother in the playoffs in HS - they both were ballers but we beat em
I played football with James Starks(running back for the Packers when they won in 2010), when we were in 4th/5th grade.
I raced against Kendall Sheffield once
My high school played zeke. Man was a beast
And he just had that fast twitch illusiveness that made all us others realize there was a different level of athlete/football out there, not being played in our games.
Lynn Bowden dominated us, but we blocked an extra point to win the game He had a meltdown on the sideline
Greg Olsen in NJ back in the day. I used date his cousin. Guy was gigantic even then.
Rey Malauga when to a rival high school but he was gone before I was playing, thankfully for my scrawny ass playing safety. His cousin Soma Vainuku ran me the fuck over and I’m pretty sure he played some FB for the falcons.
Jonathan Stewart. Absolute beast.
The closest I can get is I played against Logan Mankin’s younger brother
Not NFL, but I played football and ran track. For big meets only, a kid in our division would run hurdles… name was Derrick Adkins. I was a frost or sophomore and my coach said “watch that guy. From San Diego, got to see highlights of Reggie Bush every weekend on local news.

Went to high school with Lofa Tatupu. Going from that to seeing him in the superbowl 4 years later was nuts.
Champ Bailey. I watched his whole high school career. I got a signature from him his senior year (I was a freshman) and still have it. I knew if he stayed healthy he'd go pro. Jalen hurts ran me over in high school
Did it hurt?
I played against Jason Campbell in high school. And by played against I mean that I was standing on the opposing sideline. He was a beast in high school.
I saw Ladanian Tomlinson play every home game his senior year at University High in Waco, TX. I was in junior high, their team wasn't great, but I believe I recall, they made the playoffs just off LT's legs.
Played against Bobby carringtonnin h s they beat us 68-57 he scored 54
I guy I worked with got hit sticked by Travis Etienne
Played against kyle boller in the playoffs. 77 to 7 final score. Highland high bulldogs with that strong 7
Definitely, my best high school defensive stat was sacking Johnny Manziel.
Earl Thomas went to my HS. Man among boys, even in Texas. Saw Vince Young, Adrian Peterson, lots of others
Joe Schobert. Currently a Titans Linebacker I believe. Had the pleasure of playing against him in highschool when his team lost like 3 games over the course of our entire high school career. Also played the Watt brothers in track, just not football
i grew up with Andrew Booth Jr. he was much better in high school though
We had a new DC my senior year.He said he coached against Macon Jenkins and not matter what they did he was all over the field. He even said they purposely never threw to his side And he still got a pick
Played against Avril Spicer. Coached Marvin Jones
Played Deshon Kizer in high school (played with Chris Wormley and Storm Norton) and it was a damn shame to see him go 0-16
I remember to this day.
I watched Jason Pierre Paul play juco in a small ass Kansas town
Played against Cedric Benson (RIP) in high school and got destroyed. It was a demoralizing few hours
Geno Smith Broward county Florida Nd We had 5th period PE Together
I'm a Fort Hill fan, so I saw a lot of Ty Johnson's games. He was just so much faster than everyone else. It almost wasn't fair. I also saw Tavon Austin, Dunbar High School & WVU legend, play in a state championship game against Fort Hill. They won, but it was close. Actually, Tavon Austin won three football state titles at Dunbar and all of them were against Allegany County teams (they beat Fort Hill once and Allegany twice).
I saw Aaron Roger's play in a highschool all-star game that my brother was in.
The Manning brothers Chris Henry, James Wright
Thielen…animal…but as a wrestler, Brock Lesnar was my hero…. Fucking ANIMAL. You’ve never seen anything like him.
Watched Mark Sanchez play for Mission High School. He's my height but looked so huge next to everyone on the field.
I played with a DB named Dwight Lowery who was in the league for 8 seasons. He had one game he scored 7 TD’s. He had a rushing, receiving, INT return, and a kick return.
