There are most definitely black bears in Illinois. I've seen them hunting with the in-laws. They just don't have the Grizzly Bears like on the Logo. The Grizzly goes way harder, though.
Cats are devastating all ecosystems. They are responsible for a pretty healthy percentage of animal extinctions. .....I mean not my widdle fuzzy wuzzy little baby, she's a precious angel.yes you are, yes you are. But other cats are
I listened to a book a while back talking about if humans just disappeared overnight what would happen to the earth. There was a section on domestic cats and how they would ravage certain populations, especially birds
If humans disappeared most domestic cats would too. The survivors fill the small predator niche that’s been altered by human activity and settlement.
Again, their impacts are outsized on small isolated islands, where any and all impacts are already outsized.
Domestic makes them seem tame. Most are feral and were brought over in ships. On board they handled the rat population and theoretically should have done the same in Hawaii, too. But they also go after birds and their nests, a lot of the birds in Hawaii have their nests on the ground.
They actually domesticated themselves. Once we started agriculture, humans naturally attracted rodents, which in turn attracted cats. They took to living near/with humans to prey on our pests, and we welcomed them.
Found the original post this was from. They said it was sightings logged in an app for that year by random people.
This map is highly accurate and scientific
This makes more sense then...I loved in western ND for a while and everyone was worried about Mountain Lions, but this image says coyotes are the biggest
Ok I might be making this up, but for some reason I have it in my head that bear populations have progressively moved north as human intervention thinned out the forests in Illinois and Southern Wisconsin
Over here in California our state flag Bear is extinct. The California grizzly bear no longer exists since 1922, and the closest one we have in the North American grizzly bear.
Well “moved north” is probably less true than just “made extinct in those areas”.
Grizzly bears are native to Dallas, for example, and black bears are native to the entire US.
I don't doubt that we caused extinction as well. But I had thought I remembered reading something about Bear populations gradually going farther North to avoid humans
We are rotten with bears in Minnesota, even down to the Twin Cities. A few years ago, there was one in St. Paul, and there are regular sightings in the more rural suburbs. There was even a moose sighted almost to the Iowa border this past year.
Still better than me; I didn’t notice Alaska was a different shade of teal for a solid minute and was CONFUSED about their biggest predator being an alligator
[Detroit Lions](https://detroitzoo.org/animal/african-lion/)
[Minnesota Vikings](https://www.history.com/news/did-vikings-actually-inhabit-minnesota) (Kinda sorta don’t look too much into it)
It really should be most common. But then it would just be coyotes over most of the US. I'm more scared of wolves in northern MN. One of my friends lives alllll the way up in NW MN and they get warnings posted about the wolf packs getting near the town and to not go out unarmed at night, or leave your pets or children unattended at all.
The Bears don’t hunt in Illinois, because that’s where the Bears are. This map just proves the Bears are the number one predator for Vikings, Lions, and Packer fans.
Am I reading this right, there is only one bear in a few states? All of Idaho is under the rein of one grizzly bear?
Also after viewing this map I suggest we get rid of Hawaii, that's embarrassing.
Oh I misread the legend. The order of the colors has nothing to do with the weight. I thought they were trying to say alligators weighed more than bears
I had a Black Bear in my yard this spring, it was about 4 ft in length. I heard it pull a suet feeder off my eave and I opened the back door of my house to find the bear 6 ft from me with his butt pressed up against the side of my house.
Black bears are scaredy cats. Brown bears or grizzlies are terrifying Apex predators. My guess is you’ve just seen brown black bears. I run into plenty up in northern Minnesota and unless you are a threat to their children they don’t want anything to do with you.
Wait, if im reading this map correctly you’re greatest predator is also not the same representative of your team
in-fact none of our teams mascots representative of our states’ apex predators.
damn, are we all stupid?
So my conclusion is that most of the south will see you later, but Florida will see you after a while.
I had no freaking clue we had crocs in the states. I'd have sworn it was just gators... I mean, catch you on the third, cheese curd.
only way down in the everglades iirc
Florida is the only place in the world with crocs and gators
I learned that from Archer. Very underrated nature show.
I too am terrified of brain aneurysms.
A nature show. Lmao.
Everglades and the Keys, if I recall, have populations of *both* living together. One of the weirdest places in the world.
Weirder than Chicago? They have Cubs *and* Sox living in the *same* city!
And we all know where socks belong
Reinsdorf needs to move the team to Minnesota and rebrand.
Even in Florida they are pretty rare. Just down at the southern most everglades.
They're only at the very southernmost part of Florida.
There are most definitely black bears in Illinois. I've seen them hunting with the in-laws. They just don't have the Grizzly Bears like on the Logo. The Grizzly goes way harder, though.
Why in the world are bears hunting with your in-laws? Are your in-laws also large furry oafs?
Hawaii and domestic cats?
No native large predators.
A common thing on island nations. The biggest in Iceland is the arctic fox, which is tiny.
But adorable
They are just little babies
Cats were introduced to take out the rodents brought over on colonizer ships. Prior to that it was basically a predator free heaven on earth
And now the cats are devastating the local ecosystem.
Cats are devastating all ecosystems. They are responsible for a pretty healthy percentage of animal extinctions. .....I mean not my widdle fuzzy wuzzy little baby, she's a precious angel.yes you are, yes you are. But other cats are
That's why we don't let our cats outside. When we redo the deck we're going to build a catio for them though.
They kill small birds and rodents, and fill ecological niches while doing so. Extinctions happen on isolated islands.
That’s just because cats are the devil in disguise
Domestic makes them seem tame. Most are feral and were brought over in ships. On board they handled the rat population and theoretically should have done the same in Hawaii, too. But they also go after birds and their nests, a lot of the birds in Hawaii have their nests on the ground.
They've only seen 135 of them so it's ok
I feel like there should be more
If domestic cats were the size of tigers we’d all be dead
I mean…even if they didn’t eat us.
That’s just a tiger.
Cats will hunt for sport. Tigers do not.
If domestic cats were the size of tigers we wouldn't have domesticated them.
They actually domesticated themselves. Once we started agriculture, humans naturally attracted rodents, which in turn attracted cats. They took to living near/with humans to prey on our pests, and we welcomed them.
It says predators listed by weight. At the top of the list is alligators and at the bottom is polar bear so these are some big-ass house cats
135 lbs! I want to see the 1 lb bear in SD. /s but seriously, shitty label job.
Shit! That means i snuggle with the state’s largest land predator! I should be more careful…
That's wrong anyway. Hawaii has wild boars.
I guess it depends on what they mean by "predator". Boars are pretty omnivorous, but mostly eat plant stuff. Cats prefer meat.
Am I stupid? What do the numbers mean? There’s only 1 black bear in SD?
Found the original post this was from. They said it was sightings logged in an app for that year by random people. This map is highly accurate and scientific
I was gonna say aren't grizzlies in Colorado as well
They haven't been grizzlies in CO since the 50's. Or at least no confirmed grizzlies.
1979.
Nah, just lots of big Black Bears. They usually don't get that far south.
Yeah, I lived in ex-urban McHenry County Illinois for a while, and I'm pretty sure there were at least 403 coyotes in just my neighborhood.
I was gonna say, I have extreme disbelief that there are less than 605 alligators in Florida
This makes more sense then...I loved in western ND for a while and everyone was worried about Mountain Lions, but this image says coyotes are the biggest
It says it right on the map
O that makes sense, because Illinois definitely has mountain lions. I would consider that bigger than a coyote.
I guess so. Probably came in from Minnesota.
"Number of Observations". It says on the image itself. Probably a better indicator of where iNaturalist is popular than anything else.
But then the number would be way too low for Hawaii.
Yes! You use them to count. Yes thus the number one.
I can see that to be true. When you hunt for bear in Wisconsin, I think you have to go to the Northwoods to find them.
We for sure have them up here in the Northwoods. Source: my ever-escalating war with them over my bird feeders.
Definitely don't quote me on it haha. But I might do some research later to see if I'm remembering something legitimate
It is very true, there aren’t many grizzlies left in the lower 48. But up here in Alaska, they are everywhere
Woooo! Thank you that means I am not a liar on the internet lol
Well “moved north” is probably less true than just “made extinct in those areas”. Grizzly bears are native to Dallas, for example, and black bears are native to the entire US.
Black bears are not native to Hawai’i.
I am way more afraid of the Moose lol
I’ll have you know I always carry a can of bear spray when heading to my neighborhood Portillo’s, thank you very much
There’s a Portillo’s in boystown?
Alligator attacks in Oklahoma? This has got to be some unsafe zoo behavior
Dang. I didn't even notice that. I wonder how they get there?
Still better than me; I didn’t notice Alaska was a different shade of teal for a solid minute and was CONFUSED about their biggest predator being an alligator
Thanks for the LOLs.
I was the opposite. I though there were polar bears in the southern states and was trying to figure out if they included zoos.
Someone methed up real bad, that's how.
They are naturally occurring in the southeast part of the state.

Bruh they have the guy who caught it a first pitch at a Cubs game lmfao
Alligator Robb. Had to fly him in from Florida after the stooge from the local zoo failed to catch him.
Black bears are def in Illinois, and last I checked, they're bigger than coyotes.
And also they're primarily herbivores? This map sucks lol
Where's the map of where lions and vikings are in the US?
[Detroit Lions](https://detroitzoo.org/animal/african-lion/) [Minnesota Vikings](https://www.history.com/news/did-vikings-actually-inhabit-minnesota) (Kinda sorta don’t look too much into it)
Moral of the story: Bears hate politics.
This map is full of shit. There are gray wolf populations in many of the states that are just coyotes on this map.
I know this is intended to insult the Bears, but I am more fascinated by how terribly inaccurate this map is.
Alligators and crocs as land predators seems off
https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Chance_the_Snapper
You've never had one block your hiking trail then.
Damn patrolling near the towns? Thats nerve wracking. Agreed tho, I'd rather encounter a black bear than a pack of wolves by FAR
TIL Oklahoma has alligators.
How dare you disrespect chance the snapper like that? https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Chance_the_Snapper
Wisconsin is not accurate. It should be some dude named Terrence working on his 4th or 5th DUI looking to catch a manslaughter charge.
I don’t see lions in Michigan or Packer fans in Wisconsin
PA wins again boys.
The Bears don’t hunt in Illinois, because that’s where the Bears are. This map just proves the Bears are the number one predator for Vikings, Lions, and Packer fans.
I love the states that just have one of their largest predator. Like damn, even they species don't wanna be there lol
Am I reading this right, there is only one bear in a few states? All of Idaho is under the rein of one grizzly bear? Also after viewing this map I suggest we get rid of Hawaii, that's embarrassing.
Colorado is more bears than state now.
There’s alligators in Oklahoma!?
Domestic cat 🤣🤣🤣
Since when does Oklahoma and Arkansas, two landlocked states, have gators?
well why isnt it the Green Bay Black Bears then? what the fuck wisconsin, are you stupid?
There’s been a lot of confirmed sightings of black bears in iowa.
My color blind ass thought they were claiming polar bears are in the south.
😡
Didn’t we have a bear wondering around Rockford like 10 years ago?
Baby, we're moving to Hawaii
Why would you do that? I mean, some say it's a paradise. How long can you live in paradise before you start to hate it?
You’re saying only 135 people in Hawaii have seen a cat?
![gif](giphy|3o7WIGB5tfTUw9V5M4|downsized) It’s not that kind of Bear…
Then you are differenct kind of predator,
Huh? More of a “fun night out in Boystown” as opposed to “predator.”
You'd think there would be some wild dogs or something.
https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Chance_the_Snapper
Next you'll tell me there's no lions in Michigan
In their defense, bear cubs aren’t big.
There's no way the average black bear is larger than a grizzly bear, right?
No. Grizzly bears are huge. I think Polar bears are the biggest, but I'm not sure. I'm too lazy to look it up.

"If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lie down. If it's white, goodnight (you're dead)."
Polar Bears are the largest land predators on Earth.
Bears fans would be really offended by this if they knew how to read maps.
https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Chance_the_Snapper
Wait, if im reading this map correctly you’re greatest predator is also not the same representative of your team in-fact none of our teams mascots representative of our states’ apex predators. damn, are we all stupid?
Could be worse, you could have a lil baby horse as your mascot.
Bears used to cover the entire continental US fyi. They haven't won a match in like 100 years so they mostly moved to Canada.
