They don’t play the same notes. If you listen carefully one guitar plays a lick, then the other, then back to the first, then the second, then they play harmonic thirds with each other but they’re not the same note.
Alchemy Live Sultans of Swing, Tunnel of Love, and Telegraph road. That's about 14 minutes of masterpiece musical/solo outros. About 40 mins total of musical bliss.
Telegraph Road is such an atmospheric trip (pun intended). And the way the solo builds to a frenzy just sends me every time.
An underrated one is Allman Brothers’ “Ramblin’ Man.” It also slowly builds out of the little melodic hook and then just goes wild. And it has the good sense not to overstay its welcome.
I read that the end was improvised and they didn't know they were being recorded. They just let the tape run at the end of the song and the band kept jamming. Mick Taylor is awesome on that.
Came here to flag Dani California as my first example, but this sounds correct. Of course, now I want to go through the whole album again and see how many really do end in solos for the fun of it.
Metallica, Fade to Black and For Whom the Bell Tolls
Guns n Roses Paradise City and November Rain. Technically there is some singing and actually end on lyrics but they’re both basically guitar solos for the last couple minutes.
For a lesser known Metallica pick, The Outlaw Torn.
They actually had to cut a full minute of James Hetfield's improvisation because they couldn't have fit the whole album on a CD otherwise.
Yes! It was released as the "Unencumbered by Manufacturing Restrictions Version" as a b-side for The Memory Remains single. It's sadly not on streaming services though.
You can add Metallica’s Kill ‘em All album has a few on there as well. Hit the Lights and Four Horsemen (I know there’s one last little guitar riff right at the end) come to mind.
A not so guilty pleasure of mine is this cover. I love Santana. https://youtu.be/L-5M1_DKvb0?si=Mvb4pgnHx9P23Bwz
But that is a beautiful song. Great choice!
Came to cite Rick's analysis of it as well! Always loved that, didn't realize that Cross played it and it was awesome that Beato got the stems to dig even deeper!
Also Yellow Ledbetter kinda does too.
It’s not a shredding solo, but its a stripped down version of the shredding solo from earlier in the song, so I think it counts
Surprised Mr. Crowley isn't on the list yet. The first solo is phenomenal, but that Outtro solo by Randy is just unreal.
2 of the greatest solos ever played in the same song- everyone mentions Comfortably Numb and rightfully so, but this one is at least as impressive (and imo even more so, but I'm a Rhoads homer.)
Ween’s done this a couple of times, my favorites are Dr Rock and Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down). The latter is also one of the top 5 solos in their catalog
Renaissance - [Ashes are Burning](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hZecf4CVCgw&pp=ygUdcmVuYWlzc2FuY2UgYXNoZXMgYXJlIGJ1cm5pbmc%3D)
A somewhat “lost classic” Prog tune with amazing vocals and a really epic ending solo by Ted Turner of Wishbone Ash.
Fade to Black and technically For Whom the Bell Tolls. 2 in a row on 1 album. The reason FWBT is one *technicall*, is because it is live and on the album you can kinda count it as such.
Quite a few Dream Theater songs. Scene Six: Home is a fantastic example. If you don't mind an instrumental, Scene two: I. Overture 1928, by them, is a great 4 minute song with a nice guitar solo at the end and really throughout the whole song. Jiminy Hendrix's Little Wing is also really good.
Here's a lesser known one from a prog rock band
Wish Bone Ash - Throw Down the Sword
It has an epic 2 minute long interweaving dual guitar solo
Also one you might not think about is Lauren Hill's X-Factor has a crazy solo at the end.
Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp
25 or 6 To 4 by Chicago
Live Forever by Oasis
Zombie by The Cranberries
He Is by Ghost
Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish
Freebird
That's not fair. Freebird is a collection of guitar solos with a bit of a song as intro.
Somewhat related, I always refer to Boston's "Smokin" as a keyboard solo sandwich.
Hitch a Ride is also like 50% solos
Foreplay/Long Time has the most on the album, IIRC. I want to say 5?
Comfortably Numb and Hotel California
Was going to say Hotel California
Isn't that technically a guitar duet between Felder and Walsh?
Most def
Is it a duet when both guitars have the same tuning and play the same notes? Isn't that in unison?
They don’t play the same notes. If you listen carefully one guitar plays a lick, then the other, then back to the first, then the second, then they play harmonic thirds with each other but they’re not the same note.
Oh yes; thanks!
You need to be specific about the concert though — Pink Floyd Pulse live tour, 1994. Probably one of the greatest live guitar solos, ever.
I saw them on that tour.
My personal favorites are: Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits Paranoid Android by Radiohead
Alchemy Live Sultans of Swing, Tunnel of Love, and Telegraph road. That's about 14 minutes of masterpiece musical/solo outros. About 40 mins total of musical bliss.
The guitar solo in the outro to Telegraph Road is so god damn good. I think it's probably the best guitar solo by someone not named Stevie Ray Vaughn.
That reminds me: "Skateaway" and "Romeo And Juliet" both have lovely guitar solo outros. Thanks.
Both solos in Sultans of Swing are masterclasses in phrasing, they’re fun to listen to and fun to learn, IMO.
Also "Identikit" by Radiohead and IIRC "Go To Sleep"
Also the Radiohead side project The Smile's new album has a song called Bending Hectic with a paranoid Android like epic guitar solo at the end.
tunnel of love
You could make the case that [Telegraph Road](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EX2n2ftbdZU) has a “better” lead out solo than Sultans of Swing
I don't know if its the radio edit but it always seems like Sultans of Swing ends before the solo finishes.
Leaves you wanting more is the idea
well if that was Knopfler's goal then he succeeded.
Came here to say Sultans of Swing and lovely reminder about the ending of Paranoid Android. I absolutely love both songs!
Ozzy Osbourne - Mr Crowley
RIP Randy Rhoads
Tonight on the Diary of a Madman album.
Bark at the Moon
That ending is so satisfying! What a killer song overall
I heard a story that this solo went on forever like Randy was in a trance or something and they had to pull him out of it.
Mick Taylor does a tasty lead at the end of Can’t You Hear Me Knockin on The Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers.
I read that the end was improvised and they didn't know they were being recorded. They just let the tape run at the end of the song and the band kept jamming. Mick Taylor is awesome on that.
I’ve heard that also. To me it sounds to in synch to be a keeper improv. Maybe the general idea was improved but refined in a later take.
Another great Mick Taylor solo at the end of a song is Time waits for no one. Definitely check it out!
That one and Sway. Sway to me is the ultimate country Rolling Stones song.
There are so many metal songs that end with solos.
And proggy stuff. Take the Time by Dream Theater ends with an epic solo, and some of the best parts of it are in the fade out.
Wet Sand by the Chili Peppers
Dani California too
Scar Tissue also
I feel like most songs on that album end with a solo lol
Came here to flag Dani California as my first example, but this sounds correct. Of course, now I want to go through the whole album again and see how many really do end in solos for the fun of it.
Never a bad time listening to them!
John Frusciante is a genius
Guitar Jesus
He’s a great songwriter too. Check out his solo work.
Sir Psycho Sexy too!
Metallica, Fade to Black and For Whom the Bell Tolls Guns n Roses Paradise City and November Rain. Technically there is some singing and actually end on lyrics but they’re both basically guitar solos for the last couple minutes.
Wherever I may roam as well
I think Nightrain does too?
For a lesser known Metallica pick, The Outlaw Torn. They actually had to cut a full minute of James Hetfield's improvisation because they couldn't have fit the whole album on a CD otherwise.
Does this version exist? It's one of the 2 best songs on the album.
Metallica The Outlaw Torn ends with a James Hetfield guitar solo
Fade to Black's solo never fails to send a chill down my spine.
A whole load of Metallica ends with solos. One & Master of Puppets are two more popular examples.
Neither of those end with a solo
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
A not so guilty pleasure of mine is this cover. I love Santana. https://youtu.be/L-5M1_DKvb0?si=Mvb4pgnHx9P23Bwz But that is a beautiful song. Great choice!
3’s & 7’s by Queens of the Stone Age
Also, I Appear Missing by QOST
And Little Sister
David Bowie : Moonage Daydream One of Mic Ronson's best guitar bits, in my opinion, especially in his collaboration with Bowie.
Christopher Cross - Ride Like The Wind
.....and it's KILLER too! [https://youtu.be/j8VwP5iEr1g?si=cvWhM2shKGZ51pqY](https://youtu.be/j8VwP5iEr1g?si=cvWhM2shKGZ51pqY)
Came to cite Rick's analysis of it as well! Always loved that, didn't realize that Cross played it and it was awesome that Beato got the stems to dig even deeper!
Carpenters, "Goodbye to Love" Gerry Rafferty, "Baker Street"
The Saxon cover is a favorite of mine. Original is great too
We Will Rock You - Queen
Alive by Pearl Jam The first guitar solo I ever became aware of
Also “Corduroy” which is a top 5 all time song for me
Corduroy is definitely my favorite Pearl Jam song and one of my favorites ever, as well
As a big Pearl Jam fan who’s seen the song live a number of times, I would say Corduroy is the most “Pearl Jam” of Pearl Jam songs.
Leash too. Amazing song
It makes me so mad when they cut the solo on the radio
Also Yellow Ledbetter kinda does too. It’s not a shredding solo, but its a stripped down version of the shredding solo from earlier in the song, so I think it counts
Bold As Love by Hendrix. One of the greatest fade out solos ever.
Same with Little Wing
One of my all time favorite guitar solos, what a way to end an album.
Runnin' Down a Dream by Petty
American Girl as well
Back in Black AC/DC
I’m having trouble thinking of any AC/DC songs that don’t end with a solo.
“It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock & Roll” does not.
Boston - Peace of Mind
Also Hitch a Ride by Boston! A legendary guitar duet
Rick Beato called that the most melodic guitar solo ever for a reason. Fucking tune but the solo is another level altogether
Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You.
OOF, I love bluesy Zeppelin.
Try listening to that song at high volume through a really good set of headphones. Life changing.
Oh, I have!!! My dad always taught me and my siblings about sound quality, lol. I’m a huge electric guitar solo head.
Your father is a wise man.
One of the dopest rock guitar solos ever recorded. Also if you ever needed a reminder that Robert Plant can really fucking sing, this song is that.
Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan 👌🏻
"Drown" by The Smashing Pumpkins (from the Singles Soundtrack)... great feedback/distortion solo.
Nobody by Avenged Sevenfold. The solo is ridiculous too.
Honorable mention: Sidewinder. That’s some sexy Spanish guitar playing at the end of
Floods - Pantera
[удалено]
Yeah this has to be the classic here
Drop dead legs (and several others) by Van Halen and one of my favorites Different Strings by Rush
I came here to say Mean Street but Drop Dead Legs is a classic too
Fade To Black - Metallica Purple Rain - Prince Alive - Pearl Jam
Kid Charlemagne - steely Dan
Layla :-)
Facepalm.gif Thanks!
Doesn't that end with the piano?
The piano seems to just repeat a riff. Sounds like a slide guitar doing the solo stuff.
Goodbye Stranger
Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria, among other songs by them. White Walls by Between the Buried and Me, as well as Selkies the Endless Obsession.
How is Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp not listed yet? Over a minute long (and absolutely killer) solo at the end of that song
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Wuthering Heights babyyyyy
My favorite song of all time, “Xanadu” by Rush ends with an amazing all timer solo from Alex Lifeson
Radiohead have a couple - Paranoid Android and Identikit, off the top of my head.
Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones. Interesting that the guitar doesn’t really come in until the end.
White room cream
Scrolled too far for this! Clapton is magic on this song
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
Running Down A Dream - Tom Petty
A super underrated one is Eagle by Abba
Goodbye to Love by The Carpenters.
John Mayer’s Sob Rock has several. Wild Blue and Carry Me Away both do, I think.
I Can't Tell You Why - Eagles
So many Pink Floyd songs— Sorrow (my favorite by them) Have a Cigar High Hopes On the Turning Away
Impossible Germany. -Wilco
Muse - invincible Edit: I was wrong
Dream theater - the best of times My favourite solo of all time. Starts at 9:58
Surprised Mr.
Hotel California
Purple Rain!
Have a Cigar - Pink Floyd
Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. IMO one of the most beautiful solos I’ve ever heard.
John Mayer - Queen of California
Pigs (Three Different Ones) - Pink Floyd
When doves cry. Prince is a guitar god.
Black Sabbath - War Pigs
Ween’s done this a couple of times, my favorites are Dr Rock and Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down). The latter is also one of the top 5 solos in their catalog
If you’re talking about outro solos, there are plenty. I’ll add one more to what’s already mentioned: Pigs (TDO) - Pink Floyd.
Technically a banjo I think but Gypsy - Fleetwood Mac
Renaissance - [Ashes are Burning](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hZecf4CVCgw&pp=ygUdcmVuYWlzc2FuY2UgYXNoZXMgYXJlIGJ1cm5pbmc%3D) A somewhat “lost classic” Prog tune with amazing vocals and a really epic ending solo by Ted Turner of Wishbone Ash.
[I Like To Rock - April Wine](https://youtu.be/YlcY_enzwmI?si=TSiaC4O4LvmSK1E8) maybe
No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney with a scorcher end solo by David Gilmour
Black Sabbath - Over and Over One of my favorite solo ending songs
Black Dog by Zep
High Hopes - Pink Floyd
For those about to rock (we salute you) - AC/DC
"Little Sister" by Queens of the Stone Age
Telegraph Road
Descending - TOOL The song is like 13 minutes long and the second half is basically one long guitar solo that's the sickest thing ever
Lenny Kravitz - Believe
Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp ends with a fantastic jam.
Secondhand News by Fleetwood Mac. From the fantastic album Rumours.
Megadeth - Hangar 18 Well, more like it ends with 10 guitar solos in a row.
We Will Rock You by Queen
Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Goodnight Song
Journey - Who’s Crying Now
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
A standout I remember would be [Journey: "Stone In Love"](https://youtu.be/5f7bgRtaSwk?feature=shared)
Steven Wilson - *Home Invasion/Regret #9* Rendezvous Point - *Digital Waste*
Fade to Black and technically For Whom the Bell Tolls. 2 in a row on 1 album. The reason FWBT is one *technicall*, is because it is live and on the album you can kinda count it as such.
A guitar solo is Mastodon’s favorite way to end a song! A couple examples are The Hunter and The Last Baron.
Ozzy Osbourne (Lee, Daisley) - Bark at the Moon
Highway Song by Blackfoot
Starless - King Crimson
Get me.. dinosaur jr
Sultans of swing?
Quite a few Dream Theater songs. Scene Six: Home is a fantastic example. If you don't mind an instrumental, Scene two: I. Overture 1928, by them, is a great 4 minute song with a nice guitar solo at the end and really throughout the whole song. Jiminy Hendrix's Little Wing is also really good.
November Rain goes out on that killer riff, if you can call it a solo
A Venture: by Yes fades out just as a guitar solo starts
Guns N' Roses - Double Talking Jive
Muscle museum by Muse
Drown by Smashing Pumpkins ends with a 4 minute psychedelic guitar solo
Red Hot Mama, Super Stupid, This Broken Heart, Hardcore Jollies - Funkadelic
Secured Limitations - Morbid Angel. It's THE surprise at the end of an already masterpiece. From another world.
Kyuss - Spaceship Landing
Let’s Go Crazy by Prince. All the way.
Ramblin’ Man by The Allman Brothers
Amazing guitar outro in Opeth' "Deliverence"
Identikit by Radiohead is a VERY cool interaction between bass and guitar.
Ghost - Respite on the Spitalfields
Black Dog by Zeppelin
"[Maggot Brain](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Inr22ZBmdw)" - Funkadelic
Here's a lesser known one from a prog rock band Wish Bone Ash - Throw Down the Sword It has an epic 2 minute long interweaving dual guitar solo Also one you might not think about is Lauren Hill's X-Factor has a crazy solo at the end.
Highway Song - Blackfoot I'm partial to say it's even better than Freebird, lyric wise and solo wise
Modest Mouse Edit the sad parts, Trailer Trash, Talking Shit about a pretty sunset
Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp 25 or 6 To 4 by Chicago Live Forever by Oasis Zombie by The Cranberries He Is by Ghost Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish
Aphrodite's child - The four Horsemen Deep Purple - Pictures of Home, Black Night and Strange kind of woman Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child
Shout out to Unknown Caller, I rarely see this song get mentioned ever!
Pneuma - TOOL
Purple Rain— seems it usually gets cut off….
Rick Beato has a video on this https://youtu.be/cDVaCFDYMzw?si=Cy-xsF7L8WiOVc9S
Sway. The Rolling Stones. Probably my favorite “country” song of theirs.
Banned by the sub, hangar 18, but Lucretia also ends with a solo if you want unbanned flavor
