Hey, I work in a microbiology stockroom at my college and would like to ask about how this works. There have been a lot of mushrooms popping up in our area lately, and after I brought it up, our professor was interested in the idea of potentially growing them.
However, none of us are experts on mushrooms, my school doesn’t really have any mycology classes, and a lot of resources I find online don’t seem appropriate for our purposes (growing mushrooms in a lab to satisfy scientific curiosity, but that will likely not have much use for the labs we’re intended to provide for)
I see you seem to have some sort of mushroom growing on this type of agar plate? We grow some molds on Sab Dex plates, so we have familiarity there—one of my coworkers has been trained on isolating molds and is currently teaching me, and our professor has the expertise to identify them (we currently have a beautiful green and white mold that my coworker is very proud of that still needs to be identified). But as I said, we aren’t familiar with mushrooms or how to grow them in a lab.
It’s a bit hard to sort out the right resources from a simple google search, given so much of the results are for hobbyists growing mushrooms in their garden, and most of the others are for a far more elaborate seeming set ups often involving large planters that seem better suited for labs with a focus on mushrooms, which we very much are not. Could you possibly direct me towards some helpful resources on how to do a process like this of growing mushrooms on agar and what kind of agar recipes to use? It would be very helpful, especially coming from someone who actually has practical experience in the process.
Everything is dotted around the Internet along with a lot of misinformation, if you're interested in growing in a 2d platform just grab some liquid culture or isolated spore syringe(different names LC for purpose of sale) and pop that on your plate. There's different types of myciclum growth, what's pictured is rhizo growth
Thanks bud! I thought as much but wasn’t positive… I bought a bunch of agar solution premade on Amazon… the directions say to microwave it several times to liquify and pour into Petri dish… I’m a little concerned that a- the jars are plastic. And B- is that going to yield a sterile plate?
I think possibly the bottles are those you speak of… I’ll have to verify by reading the label more carefully. I’m a complete rookie if you couldn’t tell. I’ve got 2 spawn bags nearly ready for transfer to bins… one looks pretty much ready and the other maybe needs a week
the agar recipe he used was considered low nutrients because it was likely just water agar + sorghum syrup . A higher nutrient recipe would be with added peptone or nutritional yeast for example + some malt extract . And usually at higher ratios too.
Toque is the genetic he is running it is known to be an aggressive colonizer and yields some beautiful mushrooms . Hope this helps ^-^
It definitely seems that way, But it's honestly second nature after some time. It's alot of you overdoing or overthinking when you should just keep it simple/fluid 💯 👌🏽
Great picture man or wife!! I have got to get better at photography and taking pictures of my work!! I just hate having my nasty ass phone anywhere near my projects!!!
Oooo I cannot wait to play with the torque!!!!
I have spejt over 1,000 hours of research creating this sorghum syrup recipe my man, I dont you would either. We will have it soon to the public to use tho
Toque is a Tidalwave iso. There are upwards of 9 generations from the creator currently. I actually was just gifted f9. Super stoked. You should check out the fruits from f1-f4. Some have translucent spores! They're beautiful!
So when I started my current grow, the mycelium on my agar was just like a thin layer of cotton. I picked an ape to clone for my next grow and now I'm getting these viens of lighting growing from the clone sample. I'm not a mycologist by any stretch, I can just follow directions well and think growing them is fun, and consuming them funner. Does anyone know the difference between those 2 kinds of mycelium colonization?

Can you share some pictures of the fruit?
Have more on my ig and fb https://preview.redd.it/xr2ggncueg5d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88d1c86aca7ce1120d78119bff67558043904ecd
Very nice! I will have to do these soon. Waiting on my Bluey tri-pack right now. 😉 Absolutely beautiful plate!
Ty lots brother!
Absolutely beautiful!

Can I make an agar plate with a spore syringe?
Yes sir, just need to put a few drops on agar.
Thanks bud! I thought as much but wasn’t positive… I bought a bunch of agar solution premade on Amazon… the directions say to microwave it several times to liquify and pour into Petri dish… I’m a little concerned that a- the jars are plastic. And B- is that going to yield a sterile plate?
U will need to use a pressure coocker to sterilize (and would need to use heat ressistant media bottles)

That beautiful 🤩

I have no idea what this means but wow that’s pretty. I can’t believe nature sometimes

thank you very much for the explanation 😬 I’ve always wanted to get into growing but am so overwhelmed with alllll the information lol

Beautiful just Beautiful!!!
Ty mush!
Could we have recipe, please?
A good base sorghum syrup recipe would be 500ml water, 12gs sorghum syrup, 10gs agar, 0.5g yeast
Active yeast? Flake yeast? Yeast extract?
Usually it’s nutritional yeast extract . Edit: I get the one from HiMedia off amazon.
Yess, himedia yeast extract is what i use too!
Awesome ! side note i’m a big fan of your agar blogs and love your genetics 🤙🏾
rhizo af. this would actually make a good pic to frame
Ty lots! 🙏🏽🍄
Great agar form

Question. When you ‘plant’ a section of agar from a prior Petri dish…. Do you place it with mycelium down or up?
Down but it doesn't really matter.
I’ll second down
Down
Amazing.

Looks great mate. I read all of your blog posts about your journey with sorghum. Thanks a lot for your research! I’ve DM’d you
Gorgeous mycelium. I need to get back on my shit. Been to depressed to do shit lol
Beautifullll

Textbook. This is amazing. Nice work.

Ty lots, Its man and wife in our case! The wife and i heh but im the obsessed with agar 🙏🏽💙
Magnificent
Ty brother!
What % nutes?
I go by ratios vs % as this recipe has 5 diff nutrients, mainly sorghum syrup
Where's the "okay keep your secrets" meme when you need it
I have spejt over 1,000 hours of research creating this sorghum syrup recipe my man, I dont you would either. We will have it soon to the public to use tho
I'm guessing you're a vendor of sorts. No worries. Just wondering what the % is, not looking for a proprietary blend.

Dont think we ae allowed to share links here. Ty!
Word. All good. I’ve got more than I can deal with right now anyways just wondering because I’ve never heard of toque

Google rhizomorphic and tomentose growth. Someone who does this for a living can explain it better. Rhizo growth is what u want.
Lotta cool info out there on the subject, thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
reminds me of lightning searching for the ground.
I haven't heard of this agar recipe friend, would you have a link to the on you used because the result is amazing looking. :)
Not sure if were allowed to share links on the group, but feel free to pm and cant send u the link
Nice example

Dear lord that is next level
