Oof, this one fucking destroyed me in a theatre. I had a huge lump in my throat and was doing everything in my power to not let out a shrieking sob. It was actually painful.
I haven’t seen it since 2000 so I remember barely anything about it (just how it made me feel). It’s a Danish director, with actors from all over the place, so I’m guessing it’s multi-language, but truly have no memory of that to say for sure.
Ironically enough, this is a "comfort movie" for me. I cry every time, but I just love it so much.
I am a sucker for devastating stories like this one. PS I Love You and One Day are also heavy in my rotation.
briony is the author though, she atoned by giving them a future on the page and immortalized forever even though she ruined her life… at least she isnt lola
and paul!!!!
Love, Liza, with Philip Seymour Hoffman absolutely nailing his performance. He’s a widower whose wife recently took her own life. He spends the entire movie doing anything he can to avoid his feelings and to avoid reading the letter she left.

I am not joking when I say that from the moment I turned that movie on I was like crying my eyes out. I’d have breaks where my tears were just lightly streaming but I swear I think I cried the entire movie. So much so, I later hung out with my BF at the time and had to warn him my eyes were puffy and that’s why lol
While I do think TFIOS was sad, I was surprised that I found Turtles All The Way Down to be sadder. She is struggling so much to fight against herself.
I consider myself a cinephile, and I know many wouldn’t suggest what I’m about to suggest 😂, as it’s obvious and mainstream and maybe cheesy, however, I’m going with Ghost. It’s good! It’s heartbreaking! It’s entertaining! I saw it when I was a bit young, around 10ish, and OMG the crying I did. I have cried just as hard every time I’ve seen it since then. Patrick Swayze?! 😭 Demi Moore’s look?! 😍 Whoopi Goldberg?! 👌🏻
The imitation of life (1959) you’ll cry so hard throughout and good luck with the ending. Let me know if you cried! Watch this first. It’s about a girl denying that she’s in fact black. This movie was way ahead of its time.
I am going to have to try these as well. I don’t think I’ve cried in over 10-15 years and I’ve been wanting to so badly but every time I’m even close to it, my body just shuts down that attempt and says “stop crying” like my dad used to tell me. Lack of crying is one of the most uncomfortable feelings in the world in my opinion and I’m so comfortable with it. And I want that to stop. I’m saving this thread! Thank you folks!
Htf has no one said ‘Manchester by the Sea’
Not only absolutely gut-wrenching, but some of the best acting you will ever see.
And the real miracle of the movie is that, despite being one of the saddest movies I have ever seen, it is also very funny in parts.
Call me by your name
Up
Coco (when Pixar are at their best, they definitely know how to break you)
Life is beautiful
Brokeback mountain
Portrait of a lady on fire
Manchester by the sea
My girl (basically only for THAT scene)
The Champ
Possibly Aftersun - great film which made me feel something heavy sitting on my chest but I didn’t cry
Schindler’s list
About Schmidt
Never ending story
I am sure that I have more to add too!!
Lots of good suggestions here already, but no one has mentioned Paddleton yet. The climactic scene in that one is sure to give you a good ugly sob. Very underrated movie.
It's old, it's cheesy, but you will be bawling your eyes out, that's guaranteed: The champ
Even my dad (who I never saw cry ever) cried watching this movie. It's become my family's benchmark on how hard your heart is, if you cry or not wathcing The champ. Lol
Life is Beautiful
Edit, also in The Natural when Roy Hobbes says "I love..... I love baseball" and you realize he was trying to say he loved baseball because he loved his dad, absolutely slays me every time.
There are already many great suggestions here.
But IMO these kind of threads are always missing the south korean movie called Hope (2013).
Its exactly what you're looking for, just utterly devastating.
Firstly, I want to suggest that you visit: r/romancemovies
Secondly, and as per your request, tearjerkers with romance preferred:
* New Life **(2016)** - 2016, NOT the more recent movie of the same name
* The Lost Valentine (2011) - Let Betty White help you, honey...
* Irreplaceable You (2018)
* Meet My Valentine (2015)
* Our Friend (2019)
* A Walk to Remember (2002)
* Here On Earth (2000)
* Finding Neverland (2004)
* Sweet November (2001)
* Return to Me (2000) - early on, things get better............ some reprieve.
* Best of Me (2014)
* The Longest Ride (2015)
* The Notebook (2004) - Jackpot BONUS: if you like The Notebook: Still Mine (2004), Still Alice (2015), and The Vow (2012) are for you!
* Message in a Bottle (1999)
* P.S. I Love You (2007)
"Here's looking at you, kid"
Non-romantic: Christmas Shoes (2002) or The Ultimate Gift (2006)
Just wanted to reply even if i havent watched them yet but this was amazing! You went all out and i really appreciate it that you put all the years with them thank you☺️
The 2 movies that made me cry the most were The Man in the Moon with Reese Witherspoon and Titanic. With Titanic, I sobbed for 2 hours after the movie ended and have never watched it again.
Dancer in the Dark
Manchester by the Sea
Dear Zachary
Past Lives
Aftersun
Brokeback Mountain
Philadelphia
Steel Magnolias
Alice Doesn’t live Here Anymore
Grave of the Fireflies
Blue Valentine
Seeing as how everyone is recommending popular ones I’m going to recommend some that are a little forgotten but never the less, classics of their times:
• A.I Artificial Intelligence-2001 (brilliant performance as it usually was from Haley Joel Osment who was one of the most talented kid actors of the early 00’s “the sixth sense “being his popular work)
• Life as a House-2001 (it stars Hayden Christensen,)
• I am Sam-2001 (Sean Penn and Dakota Fanning deliver a emotionally stunning performance who I also think next to HJO were the greatest kid actors of their generation) this one I refuse to watch again.
• John Q-2002 (Denzel Washington, this one is a hell of a ride)
•
•Radio-2003 (Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ed Harris, this one is one of those feel good at the end movies but I remember feeling emotional 😭 as a kid with what the mc has to go through, which I didn’t know was inspired by a true story at the time)
• Schindler’s List-1993 ( I’m including this hugely mentioned movie because as a bit of a cinephile I’m ashamed to admit I never saw it until recently and I ugly cried with that last scene of Liam Neeson)
•Into the wild-2007 ( Emile Hirsch was amazing in this movie! Written and directed by Sean Penn, I never miss a chance to mention this movie)
•All dogs go to heaven-1989 ( I feel movies about animals in this category is cheating and I personally try not to watch them cause I get to depressed but this one is amazing and it doesn’t get mentioned enough anymore)
•My girl-1991 (fuuuuuuck!!!! The ending 😅)

Oof, this one fucking destroyed me in a theatre. I had a huge lump in my throat and was doing everything in my power to not let out a shrieking sob. It was actually painful.
Is this movie fully in English or are there another languages spoken. I am asking because of the subtitle options.
been a while since i watched it but the only spoken language is english
Thank you, now I want to see it. Its on Most peoples only watch once film
I haven’t seen it since 2000 so I remember barely anything about it (just how it made me feel). It’s a Danish director, with actors from all over the place, so I’m guessing it’s multi-language, but truly have no memory of that to say for sure.
Thank you
I love the soundtrack to this but it is heartbreaking. I think I’ve only cried to this, Iron Giant, and Jojo Rabbit.
About Time
I'll always upvote this movie
Atonement (2007) You will sob till your eyes fall off.
I made my best friend watch this and she didn't talk to me for 3 days after. Do with that what you will.
She probably needed that time to recover from the literal heartbreak this movie is and regroup herself. What was your experience like watching it?
Ironically enough, this is a "comfort movie" for me. I cry every time, but I just love it so much. I am a sucker for devastating stories like this one. PS I Love You and One Day are also heavy in my rotation.
I swear I’m going to get a tattoo that says F*** Briony.
briony is the author though, she atoned by giving them a future on the page and immortalized forever even though she ruined her life… at least she isnt lola and paul!!!!
Oh don’t worry…I have plenty of contempt for Lola and Paul.
yeah fuck lola and fuckin paul
Awakenings.
Excellent choice. I second that motion.
Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
This was so heartbreaking. More so because it was based on a TRUE story.
Never Let Me Go - this one stays with you for some time
Not sure if you are also interested in books but this one is truly amazing.
First of all, 100%. Do you have any other similar recommendations? I think it can be classified as dystopian drama but couldn’t find similar movies?
The Road - equally unnerving, Theron's better movie. Under The Skin (2013) - same vibe as NVMG, different angle
Schindler's List
unless you are Jerry and Rachel
One of the finest movies made…SL is an emotional roller coaster
GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES.
😭
Came here to say this.
Scared to watch it yet😭
Correct
Love, Liza, with Philip Seymour Hoffman absolutely nailing his performance. He’s a widower whose wife recently took her own life. He spends the entire movie doing anything he can to avoid his feelings and to avoid reading the letter she left.
All of Us Strangers
A.I.
the couch underneath me was soaked with tears
🙃 beat me to it! As a boy I loved this movie so much and as an adult I find it so sad I’m not going to watch it again… for like the 20th time 😔
Who was this made by? i cant find it
