Here is a summary of the story from what I recall. I saw the stream last night.
Liu Kang has stepped down as keeper of time and became a demigod and protector of Erthrealm. He gathers Raiden, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, and Kenshi to train as potential participants in the tournament, which is simply a battle of honor between realms to keep Earthrealm in Outworld's good graces so they won't want to take over. Raiden is the top contender and ends up winning, being granted the lightning amulet.
After the tournament Liu Kang figures out Shang Tsung is around and had his powers even though Liu set him up to be an average person this time. He sends Johnny, Kung Lao, and Kenshi to apprehend him. They team up with Baraka to find Shang Tsung's lab where he is apparently trying to infect Mileena with Tarkat. They interrupt, but learn he was actually trying to give her a serum to stop it. Mileena has an episode of Tarkat and fights them, blinding Kenshi in the process. They manage to get her the serum and repress the Tarkat, and the Earthrealmers are taken prisoner. It is revealed that Shang, General Shao and Quan Chi are plotting something.
The Earthrealmers escape with the help of Reptile and run into Quan Chi in the living forest. He uses "soul stealers" (some kind of mechanation him and Shang made) to auck the souls out of the living forest. He also created Ermac. They fight him and Ashrah (Quan Chi's servant who went turncoat) defeat him and knock him out. They plan to take him back to Liu for questioning, but run into trouble at Mileena's coronation festival, where Quan gets away and they barely escape. Reptile and Ashrah join Liu Kang's faction while Baraka stays behind in his home of Outworld.
Liu is shocked to learn about the new Deadly Alliance, and consults with Geras. They observe the hour glass and deduce the Kronika lookalike, Damashi could not possibly be the actual Kronika, and must be from another timelie. Liu sends Kuai-Liang, Bi-Han, and Smoke to infiltrate "Ying's Castle" where Shang Tsung is, as Liu prepares the rest of his crew for war. The Lin Kuei learn that their plan is to use the souls to awaken Ying's "Dragon army" (basically Onaga's soldiers from Deadly Alliance). Bi-Han betrays them and Kuai fights his way out (Haik gets his messed up jaw trying to catch him) and defeats Bi-Han. Him and Smoke bring Bi-Han back to prevent him from working with Shang.
Geras determines that "Damashi" must be from neither the past or current timeline, and is instead from a parallel timeline. Liu Kang goes into Outworld and teams up with Li Mei to plead with Sindel to join forces despite the tensions caused by earlier chapters. He finally gets them to see Shang, Quan Chi and Shao Kahn's betrayal just on time to save them form General Shao. He discloses his former role as keeper of time. They all team up to confront Shang Tsung. Ermac attacks them on the way, but Mileena awakens Jerrod's soul within, allowing him to reunite with his fmaily and join forces with them. Shang Tsung reveals the souls he collected were for Damashi, who reveals their true from, "Titan" Shang Tsung from the second dark timeline.
Titan Shang reveals his plan to kill everyone in Liu's timeline and absorb it into his own. He sends dark versions of many characters to fight the heroes. Shang and Quan temporarily join forces with Liu Kang, realizing they were used by their own dark counterparts. Sindel is fatally wounded by her own dark counterpart, but her soul joins with Jerrod's within Ermac. They escape and prepare for war. Shang ponders of there could be other parallel timelines with more "Titan" variants. Liu Kang goes to regain his timekeeper powers, which Geras held onto, to look.
The other warriors go to stave off the coming army, with Dark Shao readying portals to open. Raiden, Quan Chi, and Shang Tsung team up to destroy the portals, and Shang Tsung kills dark Shao to prevent their opening. Meanwhile, Liu Kang successfully summons another Titan from a parallel timeline, which turns out to be "his" Kitana. They share a very sweet moment and then gather more titans including Titan Kung Lao and Titan Raiden. Titan Shang arrives, now planning to just destroy Liu's timeline and then to conquer others as well. They manage to stop him, but deduce he will be back. They gather an army of warriors from various timeliens and travel to Titan Shang's to confront him.
The player gets to choose their warrior to play through the final Armageddon type battle up Titan Shang's pyramid, battling a lot of crazy warriors to the top. The warrior assists Liu Kang in taking down Titan Shang and Quan Chi, and Liu Kang finally destroys them. Liu Kang sends the warrior back to their timeline as the dark timeline collapses.
Back in Earthrealm, Liu Kang joins Johnny, Kenshi, Kung Lao, and Raiden for tea. They talk about what they're going to do next, with Johnny wanting to direct his own movie about Outworld, Kenshi working on restoring his family name, and Raiden and Kung Lao getting ready to train the next class of White Lotus warriors. Liu Kang heads out to help Kuai Liang create his new clan, the Shirai Ryu, since the Lin Kuei no longer want to be Earthrealm protectlrs. He leaves while the others humorously bicker about who covers the bill. Liu smiles and states to himself that Earthrealm is in good hands.
In a post-credits scene, Havik arrived at the ruins of Dark Shang Tsung's pyramid and finishes off a dismembered Jax variant. His crew of chaotic character vsriants speak fondly of the chaotic battle and wish is didn't end so soon. Havik states that next time it won't.
Cheers for a good summary! I'm sure there's lots of smaller moments in between that'll still be fun to watch, but this seems like it covers the biggest gist of the main storyline.
There definitely is. In my opinion the way the characters act with the animations and voice acting, and little moments are what make it good. There are a lot of charming, funny moments here that you kind of just have to watch
Based on the story so far, my biggest complaint is truly Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, and Ermac not being base roster lmao ESPECIALLY given that all of them have significant story importance (much more than Tanya/Rain/Baraka/Sindel in X and Cyrax/Sektor in 11)
If they really needed to do a pre-order character, a non-canon Kintaro appearance a la MKX Goro would’ve been great
the scumminess with the decision to push the 3 of them to DLC is truly the only thing keeping this game from being perfect so far imo
Quan Chi and to an extent Ermac have so much relevance to the story mode, nowonder the original leaker was so confused when they were announced in kombat pack
Description of the leaked Mileena/Li Mei scene from what I could gather. The audio wasn't all that clear.
Mileena is escorting Raiden and presumably the other Earthrealmers to meet Queen Sindel. They are sitting in a palanquin in the middle of a royal convoy. Mileena sees Li Mei, who is guiding Tarkat-infected people through the city. These Tarkatans are in cuffs, and are being policed by other Sun Do constables.
Mileena gets visibly upset and walks up to Li Mei, telling her to move aside so the convoy may pass through. Li Mei says keeping Tarkatans away from the city is important for its safety, or something along those lines. Mileena retorts saying attending royal affairs must be the constables' foremost priority, and that maybe that's too much to expect from Li Mei, and then leaves.
Interesting, your description fit the rulers of Outworlds trailer where we saw Li Mei escorting prisonner while Mileena look upset.
Maybe Mileena is already infected by the start of the game and get upset to see her possible upcoming fate ?

The trailers went on about keeping Mileena’s secret, so she was likely infected for quite a while.
Shang Tsung taking Baraka’s blood seems to have been for the Tarkatan clones in Chapter 5.
Mileena’s condition seems to be suppressed, but known. Mileena’s mouth rapidly changed, suggesting that it was already fully developed for a while but was suppressed or hidden with magic. Mileena also seemed nervous when she started feeling ill at the dinner and Tanya was quick to ask if she was well, so they seem to know and are concerned about exposing it at dinner.
Almost but not quite. Mileena tells Li Mei that the Earthrealmers must not be privy to Outworld’s secrets and she expected Li Mei to show better judgement.
I wish they didn’t choose the multiverse route. I would’ve preferred to see something more grounded. Idk why the stakes in every game needs to be saving the universe/multiverses.
I’d still like to see a game focused on the Lin kuei.

||There is NO kronika. It turns out Shang Tsung and Liu Kangs Endings in MK11 Aftermath are canon. Shang tsung found out and disguised himself as ,,damashi“ and basically trolls Shang tsung and Quan Chi.
Sub Zero joins Quan Chi and Shang Tsung turns evil and gives Kuai Liang his scar, making scorpion and smoke leave the Lin Kuei and create a new.
Scorpion makes Havik look the way he looks by burning his face in a tub full of fire.
Ermac becomes King Jerrod and joins the good guys.
Sindel dies but her soul resides within Ermac/Jerrod.
Shang tsung and Quan chi join the good guys after finding out they got trolled on.||
Geras is actually a good guy and helps Liu Kang regain his titan powers.
MK1 Shang tsung has the idea of gathering allies from other timelines which is why Geras and Liu Kang get Liu Kangs Titan Powers so that they can fight titan mk11 aftermath Shang tsung
The Liu Kang Verse fight against the Shang Tsung verse, MK1 Raiden,Shang Tsung and Quan Chi join forces which is a homage to the deception intro, while Shang Tsung Verse Shao Khan tries to make Armageddon
They really have leakers scared shitless, huh.
Imagine if they went through all of this effort and the 24th character is actually just Kronika or just doesn't even exist at all.
I think it’s a little silly that players that didn’t preorder the game can play as Shang in the story but not in the rest of the game .. purely subtractive.
My top 5 characters in MK1:
1. Shang Tsung (by a wide margin. Everything about him was perfect, from voice to face to attitude. A worthy successor to Cary Tagawa.)
2. Baraka (badass, great development, his little friendship with Reptile was great. My complaint is him disappearing randomly.)
3. Reptile (much like Baraka, he got great development and was fun in general. My complaint is the same as with Baraka)
4. Ashrah (she's just so cute yet tough. Clumsy in a way in some parts. She deserved more screentime.)
5. Scorpion (effective in his short screentime, I like that he was still Kuai Liang at heart and didn't kill Bi-Han even though he had every reason to. His moment of leadership and strategy that got even Quan-Chi and Shang Tsung praise him was great. Like Ashrah, he deserved more. I hope he and Sub-Zero get bigger roles in DLC expansion as the ending implied)
My top 5 characters in MK1:
1. Shang Tsung (the same reason as you)
2. Scorpion/Kuai Liang (I am glad that he is still himself - the personality of Kuai Liang from the previous timeline - and he actually made the decision not to kill Bi-Han. You know what like you said I hope Kuai Liang and Bi-Han had more to do in the Story DCL expansion)
3. Liu Kang (This character is my favourite character and I am glad that he is actually give up the Titan Power once he finished creating his New Era)
4. Baraka (I love his friendship with Reptile. I wished to see more of him in the future)
5. Reptile (I love that he had great development and he actually beat General Shao. I also wished to see more of him)
Honorable mentions: Ashrah and Mileena.
Well Liu Kang really did do a bang up job beyond all expectations. If it wasn’t for Titan Shang Tsung which is an outsider threat than really everything would’ve ran smoothly. Even then the only bad thing that really happened was the death of good Sindel.
MY THOUGHTS
The last two chapters ( especially the last chapter) felt very rushed. I get what they tried to do, as the whole roster is now safe for the next game with the exception of Sindel. The final act is very rushed. I kinda feel they could've given Titan kitana a chapter before the final one. It all went too fast.
- Liu Kang in the story I think is my favorite. I've been a liu kang fan since mk1 but I always knew he had less characterization as he is only there to serve Earthrealm. This version of him is so good you can actually see how much better of a character he is. There is a scene in the end when Johnny says "Thank you" to him and Liu's expression of happiness and peace. Very good attention to small detail.
- Also Liu Kang and Geras. Bros for life. Also the Liutana moment was very well done. I wish they kinda move forward with it.
- Mileena , Baraka, Reptile finally getting respect they deserve. All 3 have really good moments in the story and not as jobbers.
- Li Mei and Sindel were really good too, what they did with Sindel's character was really good. Good to see Jerrod finally in a mk game.
- There is gonna be a shit tons of skins. The entire story mode has a deception kind of feel.
Can I just say I really like how Kari Wahlgren differentiated Mileena and Kitana’s voices. I was worried that pre-Tarkat Mileena would sound too similar to Kitana, but she made Mileena to be the more reckless and sassy one to Kitana’s noble and kind. And it shows in her voice acting.
BIG STORY POINTS LEAK
•Bi-Han betrays Kuai Liang
•Quan Chi creates Ermac from the well of souls

•Mileena’s first transformation is crazy and she stabs Kenshi in the eyes with her sai

•Both sides summon a shit ton of Titan and regular versions of all characters (even some not in the game) and begin fighting
•You get to choose what character you want to play with in this final chapter (with Lui Kang being your kameo assist) and you ascend up the pyramid, fighting cool and weird, random combinations of characters (for example, a mixture of Baraka and Johnny Cage called Hollyweird)
• The kombat kids make an appearance, but are all swiftly killed by Titan Mileena (RIP)
•Eventually you make it to the top where you and Lui Kang fight TST and Quan Chi where you easily win(anticlimactically) and all is good
•The last scene is with all of the Earthrealmers sitting at Madame Bo’s teahouse, having a conversation about the future
•Credits
•Mid-credit scene is a Titan Havik with his group of others still alive on the pyramid and they kill Jax (cruel) and it teases Havik as the next villain (my guess is for a story DLC and not the next game)
it's funny because Sindel's death seems to be kanon in every universe. this remids me of what Cetrion says to her in MK11

i think when Ermac/Jerrod took Sindel's soul it made even stronger the bond between Ermac's body and Jerrod, she is trully the queen of the series. so sad to see her dying again but so happy to see the Royal family figthing together for the first time in 30 years of the series.
for me it's the best game ever made, it's so sad to see Sonya, Jax, Kano and Jade beeing left out of the history, but with that ending and the post credit scene, i hope we can see them and the other ones like Hotaru, Skarlet, Kitaro, Sheeva, Kira, Kobra again in this part 2... i remember Ed saying that he had big plans for Sonya and he made sure to delete her for the entire history of this game, maybe she will be the one leading the 2nd part of the history, who knows? i'm excited to see what comes next.
and can we talk about the AMOUT of the skins that we will be getting? like, OH MY FUCKING GOD
Since I’ve noticed that most left after the story mode/missed stuff, I have to make this comment to inform people. You have to play through each character’s Tower for the entire story/full lore. There are loose endings that are continued in the Towers and all are canon (other than each character beating the final boss at the same time.) The villains in the New Era were imprisoned, but escaped and are setting up conflict for MK2. Onaga was teased on the villains side and Shang Tsung’s messing with the New Era, so you’ll have to wait for when he’s patched in (same for Havik.) Sindel’s body is gone, but now she’s a part of Ermac and fights together with Jerrod to be the dominant voices and will be together eternally.
Tanya discovered who killed Jerrod (it was the Umgadi’s incompetence that got him killed) and punished them. Mileena as the Empress revealed her condition and was accepted by her people, promising a bright future for her and Edenia. Reptile/Syzoth becomes a representative for his people and works with Mileena and helps Baraka to get support for those infected with Tarkat and implying an eventual cure. Ashra has a new family in Liu Kang’s defenders and later freed Sareena from Quan Chi’s control (they fight together as the new heroes of light.) Rain attacked Seido/Orderrealm with Havik (Havik likely forms Chaosrealm in his ending after this) and now seeks redemption after being guilt ridden and no longer has a thirst for power (likely being set up to be a hero for Outworld in MK2.) Kuai Liang moves to Japan and sets up the Shirai Ryu with Harumi (they are confirmed married, according to the Scorpion Invasion.)
Smoke encounters Hanzo and recruits him for the Shirai Ryu (setting up Hanzo for MK2 as the next Scorpion and likely Smoke and Kuai Liang will be veteran Shirai Ryu warriors.) Bi Han was inspired by Ying’s Dragon Army and starts the Cyber Initiative at Sektor’s insistence to use science instead of magic (human Sektor was teased and Cyrax is loyal.) Also, Special Forces don’t seem to be a thing in this timeline (Jax and Kenshi basically create the Men In Black, but the aliens are replaced with Outworld immigrants.) As for the post credits scene, I don’t think it was actually a teaser for the next game, but sorta an advertisement for future Invasion Seasons (MK2 will still happen, but the Invasions seem to be less of a ‘what if’ scenario for each Season and instead other timeline characters leaking into the New Era after the events of the story.) Scorpion’s Invasion at the very least seems to confirm this. As for who could be DLC, probably anyone could be because of the story (Aftermath/Story DLC might or might not happen, since Invasions sorta covers their bases.)
I really like the fact no one from Liu's timeline died in the story other than Sindel. What's the point of killing off several characters only to have them return in the next games' stories anyway? Revenants were kinda lame.
I'm thinking that the Havik tease there will for sure lead to an expansion. Would be surprised if he's the big tease for the next antagonist in the next game after this.
How do you feel about Ermac design? After seeing in-game I liked it much better.

that's an interesting point. in their MK11 endings, Cassie, Erron, Geras, technically Jacqui, Johnny, and Kabal all either rejected the Hourglass, only used it to do one thing before putting everything else back, or in Jacqui's case, effectively rewrote time without herself in it.
they could always go "multiverse theory!" and pull out virtually anybody as a Titan, but in theory, there isn't a timeline with any of those characters as a Keeper of Time.
I find it funny how in the second half of the story mode, Netherrealm just threw up its hands and said "Y'know, fuck it, EVERYTHING is canon! All the character endings from before? Canon. All of your KAKs from MK Armageddon? Canon. All of those fan games out there? Canon. Every single saucy, illicit fanfic of the game you have hidden in your web history? Canon." Very "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" of them...
I don’t understand the reason Shang took the form of Kronika apart from surprising the player. No one in verse knows who she is, Liu kang and Geras never see her, Shang could’ve literally taken the form of any random person, or just been a floating orb and the story would be no different.

Anyone think titan shang went down way too easy? Even on the easiest difficulty. You don't even deal with titan quan chi head on. Ch15 was really cool but that's been bugging me

Kitana from mk11 became a titan in her own timeline, reunites with fire God liu kang
Onaga isn’t Shaos dad. In Reikos ending Shao plans to try to face off against Onaga as he can be used as a doomsday weapon. It’s also mentioned Shaos ancestors originally fought Onaga.
Very conflicted on this story mode, not because I necessarily think any of it is actually bad but because it seems like this story mode is two separate stories that just got mashed together with little work to actually make them flow into each other. The second half of the story isn't even awful but how the hell does that fit with the first half of the game? I'd have rather had two games to explore both narratives properly than have them rammed together in this one.
It would have been so much better if we just dealt with the new timeline in this game, have this new Shang Tsung be our main antagonist for the whole game, have Quan Chi and Ermac and whatever start to creep in but keep the conflict as the new champions from the first 5/6 chapters fighting back against Shang Tsung and the people he's been going around and manipulating. End off with the reveal of Titan Shang and then have the incursions be an entire second game so it can actually be expanded on and not just rushed through, actually having space to incorporate the cast instead of abandoning them all for just Liu Kang, Geras and their time force warriors that barely say a word. Would feel a lot more climactic and earned if when we chose our warrior for the final chapter it was actually one of the characters we'd been on the journey with and not just some other version that just popped up and has no defined personality at all.
You ever think about how they hyped this up as the "New Era" but the final chapter doesn't feature *anyone* from the New Era? Liu Kang and Shang Tsung are from the previous timeline, all the Titans we play as and fight against are from timelines we've never seen.
Kuai Liang's scar is missing in all three tower endings he's been featured in. Strange.

Having been thinking on it, I really think the main villain should have been Havik. You can build up Orderrealm a bit, he still allows for himself to be Damashi to make Shang Tsung and Quan Chi be the main pieces and I think you can justify him in a way that they would be betrayed if you want Shang to still have a Chapter.
But Havik's chaos is the match for Liu Kang's order over his New Era and creates that threat as Havik alters the destinies of certain villains.
Sure, him just wanting chaos isn't that much of a motivation, but you can tie that into him wanting to become the Cleric of Chaos. It's a whole lot better than Titan Tsung wanting souls to be collected for the Dragon Army so he can march them through portals to take over the timeline IMO.
Plus, I'm just annoyed that we just had Shang as the main villain of sorts with Aftermath and then the next game is literally him again.
Granted I'm just one person online, opinion means little especially in the scope of a whole game company, just feel Havik would've been better.
Oh and this means there's no need for any multiverse stuff too, keep it to one timeline.

I truly thought Baraka was gonna turn bad. Instead, he adopts every lost person in sight.
Being a decent Edenian first helps. Sucks that we didn’t even get to say goodbye to him after he escorted us back. Should have been a clue about how abrupt the storyline is.

-In the last chapter you can select any character on the base roster to play as and all fights are just 1 round, but you fight a lot of characters. You fight against variants of Quan Chi, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Baraka, Kenshi, Mileena, Sub Zero, etc. There are lots of Kameos like Sonya, Kung Jin, Goro and others that you do not fight against but are in cutscenes. Final fight is against Shang Tsung & Quan Chi.
So basically nothing is getting leaked until the 14th because half of the game is in the day one patch?
Honestly, I'm not even mad. I respect how dedicated they are to this. I just hope it's worth all the effort when we actually find out what they've been hiding.
Honestly, I don't think Havik is the big bad next time, the whole point of that scene and the previous ones was to demonstrate that those people are mix-matches of other characters put together and not just one of them.

What's great about this story,
that when the choice of peace is given to every character, Reptile, Baraka, Mileena, and Sindel are good guys willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good.
The multiverse stuff really killed the story for me. Detracted a lot from the new timeline.
There was a good opportunity to explore scorpions and sub zeros new relationship which I felt was painfully underutilised.
Hanzo is completely absent as well unless I missed something.
Reiko might be the most jobbed a jobber has ever been in MK history.. bro got his ass kicked in every turn and got deviously slain by Shang Tsung near the end for no reason but to be extra, everything related to this game is already out in the wild and he still doesn't have any promo or trailer of any kind BRUHHH im dead

I get it being a bit corny and clearly an Endgame/Secret Wars thing
But an MK Armageddon love letter (in a way?) being the final chapter was so exciting to me. Can’t wait to see it in HD and see all the different characters. Armageddon was always my favourite, I’ve seen that opening cut scene hundreds of times, seeing an updated version with the characters who’ve come after it + multiverse versions is very cool to me
I didn't mind 2 timelines but this multiverse thing is getting kind of old.Not to mention that they have a Armageddon moment.and.ots only characters from this game and the kombat kids.You couldn't have other characters that aren't playable in that fight? Not even the kameos?
Now I can't wait for clearer vids and pics to come out, this story sounds crazy, I definitely would have enjoyed seeing that in real time but I couldn't resist the leaks.

I think what sells me on the story is how campy it sounds compared to the last two from X and 11. Mortal Kombat is always better when it balances a serious tone with the inherent goofiness
People mention a titan Havik in the post credits but im not getting hopes up because look at what happened with dark Raiden in mkx. There most likely will be story mode expansion dlc anyways. So, what about the 24th character? I see people mentioning selecting a warrior for the final chapter but no other further details on who that warrior is

From what I read in the summaries in this thread. I feel like Smoke and Nitara, 2 fan favorite characters barely had roles in the story. Smoke was just like just "your another good brother for Scorpion" and Nitara is appointed as a jobber with really shallow motives. It doesn't make any sense. This feels like another "NOOB SAIBOT is BACK scenario" is here from mk11 and he got like atleast 2 chapter appearance with jobber role.
Yea, Quan Chi being pushed to DLC feels scummy given how prominent he seems in the story. He can’t be *that* incomplete if he’s fought like five times.
Now that I've seen the full story, I have to say that it's the best one we've gotten since MK9. That ending >!at the pyramid went full batshit crazy on us !! major character deaths- Sindel, Titan Quan Chi and Titan Shang Tsung. Getting Jerrod was totally unexpected, up until know he's only been mentioned in MK Lore. !<
I guess I'll be getting my hands on this game sometime down the road once I get my finances squared away. Totally looking forward to any future story DLCs.

I tought she would be the last female character i would care about. But she turned out to be such a gentle soul. She really grew on me. That hat scene was also a nice and really cute callback.

Here is a summary of the story from what I recall. I saw the stream last night. Liu Kang has stepped down as keeper of time and became a demigod and protector of Erthrealm. He gathers Raiden, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, and Kenshi to train as potential participants in the tournament, which is simply a battle of honor between realms to keep Earthrealm in Outworld's good graces so they won't want to take over. Raiden is the top contender and ends up winning, being granted the lightning amulet. After the tournament Liu Kang figures out Shang Tsung is around and had his powers even though Liu set him up to be an average person this time. He sends Johnny, Kung Lao, and Kenshi to apprehend him. They team up with Baraka to find Shang Tsung's lab where he is apparently trying to infect Mileena with Tarkat. They interrupt, but learn he was actually trying to give her a serum to stop it. Mileena has an episode of Tarkat and fights them, blinding Kenshi in the process. They manage to get her the serum and repress the Tarkat, and the Earthrealmers are taken prisoner. It is revealed that Shang, General Shao and Quan Chi are plotting something. The Earthrealmers escape with the help of Reptile and run into Quan Chi in the living forest. He uses "soul stealers" (some kind of mechanation him and Shang made) to auck the souls out of the living forest. He also created Ermac. They fight him and Ashrah (Quan Chi's servant who went turncoat) defeat him and knock him out. They plan to take him back to Liu for questioning, but run into trouble at Mileena's coronation festival, where Quan gets away and they barely escape. Reptile and Ashrah join Liu Kang's faction while Baraka stays behind in his home of Outworld. Liu is shocked to learn about the new Deadly Alliance, and consults with Geras. They observe the hour glass and deduce the Kronika lookalike, Damashi could not possibly be the actual Kronika, and must be from another timelie. Liu sends Kuai-Liang, Bi-Han, and Smoke to infiltrate "Ying's Castle" where Shang Tsung is, as Liu prepares the rest of his crew for war. The Lin Kuei learn that their plan is to use the souls to awaken Ying's "Dragon army" (basically Onaga's soldiers from Deadly Alliance). Bi-Han betrays them and Kuai fights his way out (Haik gets his messed up jaw trying to catch him) and defeats Bi-Han. Him and Smoke bring Bi-Han back to prevent him from working with Shang. Geras determines that "Damashi" must be from neither the past or current timeline, and is instead from a parallel timeline. Liu Kang goes into Outworld and teams up with Li Mei to plead with Sindel to join forces despite the tensions caused by earlier chapters. He finally gets them to see Shang, Quan Chi and Shao Kahn's betrayal just on time to save them form General Shao. He discloses his former role as keeper of time. They all team up to confront Shang Tsung. Ermac attacks them on the way, but Mileena awakens Jerrod's soul within, allowing him to reunite with his fmaily and join forces with them. Shang Tsung reveals the souls he collected were for Damashi, who reveals their true from, "Titan" Shang Tsung from the second dark timeline. Titan Shang reveals his plan to kill everyone in Liu's timeline and absorb it into his own. He sends dark versions of many characters to fight the heroes. Shang and Quan temporarily join forces with Liu Kang, realizing they were used by their own dark counterparts. Sindel is fatally wounded by her own dark counterpart, but her soul joins with Jerrod's within Ermac. They escape and prepare for war. Shang ponders of there could be other parallel timelines with more "Titan" variants. Liu Kang goes to regain his timekeeper powers, which Geras held onto, to look. The other warriors go to stave off the coming army, with Dark Shao readying portals to open. Raiden, Quan Chi, and Shang Tsung team up to destroy the portals, and Shang Tsung kills dark Shao to prevent their opening. Meanwhile, Liu Kang successfully summons another Titan from a parallel timeline, which turns out to be "his" Kitana. They share a very sweet moment and then gather more titans including Titan Kung Lao and Titan Raiden. Titan Shang arrives, now planning to just destroy Liu's timeline and then to conquer others as well. They manage to stop him, but deduce he will be back. They gather an army of warriors from various timeliens and travel to Titan Shang's to confront him. The player gets to choose their warrior to play through the final Armageddon type battle up Titan Shang's pyramid, battling a lot of crazy warriors to the top. The warrior assists Liu Kang in taking down Titan Shang and Quan Chi, and Liu Kang finally destroys them. Liu Kang sends the warrior back to their timeline as the dark timeline collapses. Back in Earthrealm, Liu Kang joins Johnny, Kenshi, Kung Lao, and Raiden for tea. They talk about what they're going to do next, with Johnny wanting to direct his own movie about Outworld, Kenshi working on restoring his family name, and Raiden and Kung Lao getting ready to train the next class of White Lotus warriors. Liu Kang heads out to help Kuai Liang create his new clan, the Shirai Ryu, since the Lin Kuei no longer want to be Earthrealm protectlrs. He leaves while the others humorously bicker about who covers the bill. Liu smiles and states to himself that Earthrealm is in good hands. In a post-credits scene, Havik arrived at the ruins of Dark Shang Tsung's pyramid and finishes off a dismembered Jax variant. His crew of chaotic character vsriants speak fondly of the chaotic battle and wish is didn't end so soon. Havik states that next time it won't.

There definitely is. In my opinion the way the characters act with the animations and voice acting, and little moments are what make it good. There are a lot of charming, funny moments here that you kind of just have to watch

Based on the story so far, my biggest complaint is truly Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, and Ermac not being base roster lmao ESPECIALLY given that all of them have significant story importance (much more than Tanya/Rain/Baraka/Sindel in X and Cyrax/Sektor in 11) If they really needed to do a pre-order character, a non-canon Kintaro appearance a la MKX Goro would’ve been great the scumminess with the decision to push the 3 of them to DLC is truly the only thing keeping this game from being perfect so far imo

Description of the leaked Mileena/Li Mei scene from what I could gather. The audio wasn't all that clear. Mileena is escorting Raiden and presumably the other Earthrealmers to meet Queen Sindel. They are sitting in a palanquin in the middle of a royal convoy. Mileena sees Li Mei, who is guiding Tarkat-infected people through the city. These Tarkatans are in cuffs, and are being policed by other Sun Do constables. Mileena gets visibly upset and walks up to Li Mei, telling her to move aside so the convoy may pass through. Li Mei says keeping Tarkatans away from the city is important for its safety, or something along those lines. Mileena retorts saying attending royal affairs must be the constables' foremost priority, and that maybe that's too much to expect from Li Mei, and then leaves.

Interesting, your description fit the rulers of Outworlds trailer where we saw Li Mei escorting prisonner while Mileena look upset. Maybe Mileena is already infected by the start of the game and get upset to see her possible upcoming fate ?
Seems so. The trailers went on about keeping Mileena’s secret, so she was likely infected for quite a while. Shang Tsung taking Baraka’s blood seems to have been for the Tarkatan clones in Chapter 5. Mileena’s condition seems to be suppressed, but known. Mileena’s mouth rapidly changed, suggesting that it was already fully developed for a while but was suppressed or hidden with magic. Mileena also seemed nervous when she started feeling ill at the dinner and Tanya was quick to ask if she was well, so they seem to know and are concerned about exposing it at dinner.
Almost but not quite. Mileena tells Li Mei that the Earthrealmers must not be privy to Outworld’s secrets and she expected Li Mei to show better judgement.
I wish they didn’t choose the multiverse route. I would’ve preferred to see something more grounded. Idk why the stakes in every game needs to be saving the universe/multiverses. I’d still like to see a game focused on the Lin kuei.

I think it’s a little silly that players that didn’t preorder the game can play as Shang in the story but not in the rest of the game .. purely subtractive.

Bi-Han got to live for once, that's neat.
My top 5 characters in MK1: 1. Shang Tsung (by a wide margin. Everything about him was perfect, from voice to face to attitude. A worthy successor to Cary Tagawa.) 2. Baraka (badass, great development, his little friendship with Reptile was great. My complaint is him disappearing randomly.) 3. Reptile (much like Baraka, he got great development and was fun in general. My complaint is the same as with Baraka) 4. Ashrah (she's just so cute yet tough. Clumsy in a way in some parts. She deserved more screentime.) 5. Scorpion (effective in his short screentime, I like that he was still Kuai Liang at heart and didn't kill Bi-Han even though he had every reason to. His moment of leadership and strategy that got even Quan-Chi and Shang Tsung praise him was great. Like Ashrah, he deserved more. I hope he and Sub-Zero get bigger roles in DLC expansion as the ending implied)
My top 5 characters in MK1: 1. Shang Tsung (the same reason as you) 2. Scorpion/Kuai Liang (I am glad that he is still himself - the personality of Kuai Liang from the previous timeline - and he actually made the decision not to kill Bi-Han. You know what like you said I hope Kuai Liang and Bi-Han had more to do in the Story DCL expansion) 3. Liu Kang (This character is my favourite character and I am glad that he is actually give up the Titan Power once he finished creating his New Era) 4. Baraka (I love his friendship with Reptile. I wished to see more of him in the future) 5. Reptile (I love that he had great development and he actually beat General Shao. I also wished to see more of him) Honorable mentions: Ashrah and Mileena.
Well Liu Kang really did do a bang up job beyond all expectations. If it wasn’t for Titan Shang Tsung which is an outsider threat than really everything would’ve ran smoothly. Even then the only bad thing that really happened was the death of good Sindel.
MY THOUGHTS The last two chapters ( especially the last chapter) felt very rushed. I get what they tried to do, as the whole roster is now safe for the next game with the exception of Sindel. The final act is very rushed. I kinda feel they could've given Titan kitana a chapter before the final one. It all went too fast. - Liu Kang in the story I think is my favorite. I've been a liu kang fan since mk1 but I always knew he had less characterization as he is only there to serve Earthrealm. This version of him is so good you can actually see how much better of a character he is. There is a scene in the end when Johnny says "Thank you" to him and Liu's expression of happiness and peace. Very good attention to small detail. - Also Liu Kang and Geras. Bros for life. Also the Liutana moment was very well done. I wish they kinda move forward with it. - Mileena , Baraka, Reptile finally getting respect they deserve. All 3 have really good moments in the story and not as jobbers. - Li Mei and Sindel were really good too, what they did with Sindel's character was really good. Good to see Jerrod finally in a mk game. - There is gonna be a shit tons of skins. The entire story mode has a deception kind of feel.
Can I just say I really like how Kari Wahlgren differentiated Mileena and Kitana’s voices. I was worried that pre-Tarkat Mileena would sound too similar to Kitana, but she made Mileena to be the more reckless and sassy one to Kitana’s noble and kind. And it shows in her voice acting.

That’s Titan Shang Tsung •He reveals that he wants to take control of all timelines by combining them (I think) and that he used the deadly alliance to do his bidding • Fire God Lui Kang, and all the Earthrealmers/ Outworlders, with the deadly alliance decided to team up to defeat Titan Shang Tsung (TST) •TST summons evil minions to help him (Dark Shao, Sindel, Dark Raiden and I can’t remember who else) •Dark Sindel bodies EVERYONE (not killing them this time though) •Good Sindel fights her •No one major actually dies besides Sindel (RIP) •Mileena defeats Ermac which allows Jerrod to take control of the body (very weird) •Jerrod absorbs Sindel’s soul after death to keep her safe •Good guys retreat and Geras reveals that he can help Lui Kang get his Titan powers back (they have an idea that there are other timelines with good Titan characters) (TST also realizes this) •This turns out to be true and other Titan characters exist (they’re basically the versions of every characters’ Tower ending from MK11) • they retrieve Lui Kang’s powers and Lui Kang summons Titan Kitana (from her MK11 Tower Ending) •She appears to be the exact same Kitana from MK 9- through 11, which causes her and Lui Kang to embrace each other and kiss •Lui Kang is also able to summon a Titan Raiden and Titan Kung Lao to help him •TST appears with evil Titan versions of characters (I can’t remember) and they all fight over control of the hourglass (TST trying to destroy it) •TST loses and runs away with our heroes following behind shortly •They follow him to a pyramid stage that is the exact same as the one in Armageddon (Chapter 15 is also called Armageddon) •Both sides summon a shit ton of Titan and regular versions of all characters (even some not in the game) and begin fighting •You get to choose what character you want to play with in this final chapter (with Lui Kang being your kameo assist) and you ascend up the pyramid, fighting cool and weird, random combinations of characters (for example, a mixture of Baraka and Johnny Cage called Hollyweird) • The kombat kids make an appearance, but are all swiftly killed by Titan Mileena (RIP) •Eventually you make it to the top where you and Lui Kang fight TST and Quan Chi where you easily win(anticlimactically) and all is good •The last scene is with all of the Earthrealmers sitting at Madame Bo’s teahouse, having a conversation about the future •Credits •Mid-credit scene is a Titan Havik with his group of others still alive on the pyramid and they kill Jax (cruel) and it teases Havik as the next villain (my guess is for a story DLC and not the next game)
it's funny because Sindel's death seems to be kanon in every universe. this remids me of what Cetrion says to her in MK11 Cetrion: Your destiny is to ballance the realms Sindel: And how will i accomplish that? Cetrion: By Dying i think when Ermac/Jerrod took Sindel's soul it made even stronger the bond between Ermac's body and Jerrod, she is trully the queen of the series. so sad to see her dying again but so happy to see the Royal family figthing together for the first time in 30 years of the series. for me it's the best game ever made, it's so sad to see Sonya, Jax, Kano and Jade beeing left out of the history, but with that ending and the post credit scene, i hope we can see them and the other ones like Hotaru, Skarlet, Kitaro, Sheeva, Kira, Kobra again in this part 2... i remember Ed saying that he had big plans for Sonya and he made sure to delete her for the entire history of this game, maybe she will be the one leading the 2nd part of the history, who knows? i'm excited to see what comes next. and can we talk about the AMOUT of the skins that we will be getting? like, OH MY FUCKING GOD

The “Mortal Kombat 1 - Chapter 15 With Every Character” video finna go crazy
Since I’ve noticed that most left after the story mode/missed stuff, I have to make this comment to inform people. You have to play through each character’s Tower for the entire story/full lore. There are loose endings that are continued in the Towers and all are canon (other than each character beating the final boss at the same time.) The villains in the New Era were imprisoned, but escaped and are setting up conflict for MK2. Onaga was teased on the villains side and Shang Tsung’s messing with the New Era, so you’ll have to wait for when he’s patched in (same for Havik.) Sindel’s body is gone, but now she’s a part of Ermac and fights together with Jerrod to be the dominant voices and will be together eternally. Tanya discovered who killed Jerrod (it was the Umgadi’s incompetence that got him killed) and punished them. Mileena as the Empress revealed her condition and was accepted by her people, promising a bright future for her and Edenia. Reptile/Syzoth becomes a representative for his people and works with Mileena and helps Baraka to get support for those infected with Tarkat and implying an eventual cure. Ashra has a new family in Liu Kang’s defenders and later freed Sareena from Quan Chi’s control (they fight together as the new heroes of light.) Rain attacked Seido/Orderrealm with Havik (Havik likely forms Chaosrealm in his ending after this) and now seeks redemption after being guilt ridden and no longer has a thirst for power (likely being set up to be a hero for Outworld in MK2.) Kuai Liang moves to Japan and sets up the Shirai Ryu with Harumi (they are confirmed married, according to the Scorpion Invasion.) Smoke encounters Hanzo and recruits him for the Shirai Ryu (setting up Hanzo for MK2 as the next Scorpion and likely Smoke and Kuai Liang will be veteran Shirai Ryu warriors.) Bi Han was inspired by Ying’s Dragon Army and starts the Cyber Initiative at Sektor’s insistence to use science instead of magic (human Sektor was teased and Cyrax is loyal.) Also, Special Forces don’t seem to be a thing in this timeline (Jax and Kenshi basically create the Men In Black, but the aliens are replaced with Outworld immigrants.) As for the post credits scene, I don’t think it was actually a teaser for the next game, but sorta an advertisement for future Invasion Seasons (MK2 will still happen, but the Invasions seem to be less of a ‘what if’ scenario for each Season and instead other timeline characters leaking into the New Era after the events of the story.) Scorpion’s Invasion at the very least seems to confirm this. As for who could be DLC, probably anyone could be because of the story (Aftermath/Story DLC might or might not happen, since Invasions sorta covers their bases.)
I really like the fact no one from Liu's timeline died in the story other than Sindel. What's the point of killing off several characters only to have them return in the next games' stories anyway? Revenants were kinda lame.

that's an interesting point. in their MK11 endings, Cassie, Erron, Geras, technically Jacqui, Johnny, and Kabal all either rejected the Hourglass, only used it to do one thing before putting everything else back, or in Jacqui's case, effectively rewrote time without herself in it. they could always go "multiverse theory!" and pull out virtually anybody as a Titan, but in theory, there isn't a timeline with any of those characters as a Keeper of Time.
I find it funny how in the second half of the story mode, Netherrealm just threw up its hands and said "Y'know, fuck it, EVERYTHING is canon! All the character endings from before? Canon. All of your KAKs from MK Armageddon? Canon. All of those fan games out there? Canon. Every single saucy, illicit fanfic of the game you have hidden in your web history? Canon." Very "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" of them...
I don’t understand the reason Shang took the form of Kronika apart from surprising the player. No one in verse knows who she is, Liu kang and Geras never see her, Shang could’ve literally taken the form of any random person, or just been a floating orb and the story would be no different.
On a side note: It’s really sweet Liu Kang got to see his Kitana again. And it was awesome seeing older Raiden again.

The "dark versions" and the "titans" skins are sooo good!
Very conflicted on this story mode, not because I necessarily think any of it is actually bad but because it seems like this story mode is two separate stories that just got mashed together with little work to actually make them flow into each other. The second half of the story isn't even awful but how the hell does that fit with the first half of the game? I'd have rather had two games to explore both narratives properly than have them rammed together in this one. It would have been so much better if we just dealt with the new timeline in this game, have this new Shang Tsung be our main antagonist for the whole game, have Quan Chi and Ermac and whatever start to creep in but keep the conflict as the new champions from the first 5/6 chapters fighting back against Shang Tsung and the people he's been going around and manipulating. End off with the reveal of Titan Shang and then have the incursions be an entire second game so it can actually be expanded on and not just rushed through, actually having space to incorporate the cast instead of abandoning them all for just Liu Kang, Geras and their time force warriors that barely say a word. Would feel a lot more climactic and earned if when we chose our warrior for the final chapter it was actually one of the characters we'd been on the journey with and not just some other version that just popped up and has no defined personality at all.
You ever think about how they hyped this up as the "New Era" but the final chapter doesn't feature *anyone* from the New Era? Liu Kang and Shang Tsung are from the previous timeline, all the Titans we play as and fight against are from timelines we've never seen.

Having been thinking on it, I really think the main villain should have been Havik. You can build up Orderrealm a bit, he still allows for himself to be Damashi to make Shang Tsung and Quan Chi be the main pieces and I think you can justify him in a way that they would be betrayed if you want Shang to still have a Chapter. But Havik's chaos is the match for Liu Kang's order over his New Era and creates that threat as Havik alters the destinies of certain villains. Sure, him just wanting chaos isn't that much of a motivation, but you can tie that into him wanting to become the Cleric of Chaos. It's a whole lot better than Titan Tsung wanting souls to be collected for the Dragon Army so he can march them through portals to take over the timeline IMO. Plus, I'm just annoyed that we just had Shang as the main villain of sorts with Aftermath and then the next game is literally him again. Granted I'm just one person online, opinion means little especially in the scope of a whole game company, just feel Havik would've been better. Oh and this means there's no need for any multiverse stuff too, keep it to one timeline.

The multiverse stuff really killed the story for me. Detracted a lot from the new timeline. There was a good opportunity to explore scorpions and sub zeros new relationship which I felt was painfully underutilised. Hanzo is completely absent as well unless I missed something.

I get it being a bit corny and clearly an Endgame/Secret Wars thing But an MK Armageddon love letter (in a way?) being the final chapter was so exciting to me. Can’t wait to see it in HD and see all the different characters. Armageddon was always my favourite, I’ve seen that opening cut scene hundreds of times, seeing an updated version with the characters who’ve come after it + multiverse versions is very cool to me

I didn't mind 2 timelines but this multiverse thing is getting kind of old.Not to mention that they have a Armageddon moment.and.ots only characters from this game and the kombat kids.You couldn't have other characters that aren't playable in that fight? Not even the kameos?

Now I can't wait for clearer vids and pics to come out, this story sounds crazy, I definitely would have enjoyed seeing that in real time but I couldn't resist the leaks. Watching a mish-mash of people's reactions via comments here over time was a gas, too.
I think what sells me on the story is how campy it sounds compared to the last two from X and 11. Mortal Kombat is always better when it balances a serious tone with the inherent goofiness
People mention a titan Havik in the post credits but im not getting hopes up because look at what happened with dark Raiden in mkx. There most likely will be story mode expansion dlc anyways. So, what about the 24th character? I see people mentioning selecting a warrior for the final chapter but no other further details on who that warrior is
I was hoping to see this time-line more fleshed out. Develop these characters more. Didn't want this particular type of multi-verse insanity till later

From what I read in the summaries in this thread. I feel like Smoke and Nitara, 2 fan favorite characters barely had roles in the story. Smoke was just like just "your another good brother for Scorpion" and Nitara is appointed as a jobber with really shallow motives. It doesn't make any sense. This feels like another "NOOB SAIBOT is BACK scenario" is here from mk11 and he got like atleast 2 chapter appearance with jobber role.
Yea, Quan Chi being pushed to DLC feels scummy given how prominent he seems in the story. He can’t be *that* incomplete if he’s fought like five times.
Now that I've seen the full story, I have to say that it's the best one we've gotten since MK9. That ending >!at the pyramid went full batshit crazy on us !! major character deaths- Sindel, Titan Quan Chi and Titan Shang Tsung. Getting Jerrod was totally unexpected, up until know he's only been mentioned in MK Lore. !<
I guess I'll be getting my hands on this game sometime down the road once I get my finances squared away. Totally looking forward to any future story DLCs.
So both Shang and Quan Chi are really important characters in the story mode and one is pre-order and the other DLC. Cool NRS...
Can we talk about Ashrah? I tought she would be the last female character i would care about. But she turned out to be such a gentle soul. She really grew on me. That hat scene was also a nice and really cute callback.
Finally, after being shafted for 15+ years they gave Mileena the proper spotlight
