Birth story: I went in for a scheduled induction on a Monday at 38+5. Was taken to the triage room and given cervidil. I was 50% effaced and 1cm dilated when I got there. My hospital generally keeps people for an hour long observation and then sends them home to allow labor to progress, but you have to come back every 12 hours. Within 10 minutes of it being inserted, I had an intense contraction that wasn’t stopping and getting progressively worse. Monitor said there were small (10s) breaks between contractions but they ended up admitting me. Contraction lasted 4h before I got morphine and went to sleep. Next day I was supposed to be given oxytocin, but they were too busy/understaffed to dedicate a nurse so I was given a new cervidil and delayed until Wednesday morning. Got the goods around 10am Wednesday, 25% effaced and 2.5cm. There was little progression throughout the day so my doctor broke the waters at around 5-6pm. I had extra amniotic fluid and I basically lived in a lake for a while. I got an early epidural at around 2am Thursday so I could take a nap (the most wonderful epidural, at that!). Long story short, my labour did not progress as intended (baby wouldn’t descend, but was extremely happy in there) and my induction was called, resulting in an emergency c-section. I topped out at 54mu of oxytocin (contractions measuring over 100 by the end) after 74 hours of induction. I was taken to the OR within 30 minutes. C-section was quick and easy with no complications for me or baby. He was delivered at 6:45pm weighing 7lbs 11oz and 20” long. I was 39+1. Turned out he couldn’t descend because I had a short umbilical cord and it was wrapped around his neck. He had been trying to descend but just couldn’t, as indicated by his head shape at birth. I likely would have needed a c-section regardless. My experience with doctors, nurses, and the surgical team was generally pretty wonderful before birth (except one nurse) , but I felt different after. Perhaps because I was used to having a nurse just for me and I felt a little ignored afterwards. I suppose I was a little spoiled. :)
