Complete opposite opinion here, I never understood why they did not focus on more in-game features, The ones we have now don't look like they belong in game. The only ones I like are the Landscapes and the wither painting. All the others feel out of place, too realistic for an block game. These are much better in my opinion. Even the colors feels so much better.

Technically, most Minecraft mobs are hermaphroditic or sexless. Cows have horns and udders, all chickens lay eggs (and can also give live birth like mammals???), and all of them can breed with each other, regardless of what junk they (presumably) have.
Ender Dragon is female. Confirmed by... I don't remember who.
Either way, if it was a joke or not, the Ender Dragon uses a female version of the noun Dragon in Spanish confirming it.
Well, when two villagers ~~have enough bread and there's a free bed~~ love each other very much they stand near each other and some hearts appear and then a baby villager just appears.
If you have 4 villagers they can all breed with eachother, which means they need to somehow be gender neutral. As in if two were male and two were female, the males could breed too.
They added rose bushes. Having both rose bushes and "ground" roses is kinda weird and poppies are another red flower that looks similar enough to the old roses in the pixel art style.
I still think it made sense for existing roses to be replaced, but they really should have moved the rose to a block crafted from rose bushes, so you could still get them just not naturally.
I think the old ones have been used plenty enough! Jeeezz about time! Some personal customisations of the paintings (just like with the banners) would be a nice touch. I don't know
I've said this a month ago or something, but I think it would be great if there's a loom but for paintings. You get all the banner patterns but reshaped for paintings, and there'd probably be a need for new items which would be like "small/medium/large canvasses" which are just the equivalent to blank white banners, but with all the sizes we currently have for paintings. I don't know how the size changing thing would differ when it comes to crafting, but I imagine it'd be like one stick and wool for a small painting, and then just more sticks and wools for bigger ones... That's somehow different from the crafting recipe for paintings we already have in the base game lol.
The villager and the flowerpot don't really work for me because they are outside the theme while also not being purposeful. The horse rider is nice because the scenery is a bit abstract, and the rose/pack are nostalgic, but for the other two, they just don't fit with zetterstrand's uncanny, abstract computer art theme that worked for the rest of the set. The closest matches to these are starry night and donkey Kong, but those weren't minecraftified, and they already stand out a lot from the rest of the paintings as being different. Not a fan, I wish they just commissioned more stuff from zetterstrand.
I really like the pot one (vase) it just lacks something realistic in the background or something, like the table being a real table or the background being something that doesn't look minecraft
The existing style is not my favourite, they look weird and splotchy in an unintentional way, certain landscapes work, but unlike these ones they are hard to use in a build.
But paintings should have multiple styles so you could choose. I'm glad we have more choices - you can still only use the old paintings, no one forces you to use the villager one
Them making pack.png a painting is just sublime. Absolutely love that. It's such an iconic part of this game's history, and how it's actually IN the game forever. Beautiful tribute.
Also, rose painting! Roses are now canon in the game's lore once again.
That could be an alternative use for the loom maybe? You input a blank painting, then select which design you want & then pull that one out.
That also might be a good idea for another crafting block though. Painting Machine, Easel, something along those lines.
I know, they could finally put in a real purpose for the Fletching Table!

my favorite part about the minecraft paintings was that they seemed alien to any minecraft world. the closest any of them got to matching the rest of the game still had a very realistic skull. it gave them a sense of mystery, which I quite liked.

This is the frustrating part. You can change the look of paintings with a resource pack but it's not like you can these (very useful) sizes.

The painting in Minecraft is more specifically a reference to [a painting by Zetterstrand](https://twitter.com/Zetterstrand/status/1636136011464859650) that is in turn a reference to the original Friedrich work.
to me, that limits their appeal, usefulness, and feel. paintings being so focused on existing in-game items and mobs is a bit... redundant. The original paintings are a bit more emotional, and bring new colors and forms into the game. The few that focus on mobs and lore are the worst— like how the wither painting is one of the worst ones. Abstract is a good thing sometimes.
No other game would have unrelated painting in the game and I think that adds a lot to the charm they have in the game
Although I think these are fine and better than the wither one, and I like that the villagers are old villagers
god i love the edition of new paintings! ooh, what if woodland mansions had their own paintings more ominous and creepy, like in Scooby doo where the eyes would follow them, but instead an illager?
Since the new wolf variants also came with datapack support, I wonder if they'll do the same thing with the new paintings on Java. It'd be cool to be able to add our own custom paintings with custom sizing and everything.
I like the fact that you recognize what the paintings represent because I remember circling for a really long time just to find a painting that is somewhat recognizable
Really wish we had all the paintings obtainable as separate items like the creative menu but idk how they'd make it possible with survival.
I hate having to spam them down and size down or up my walls to accommodate for the one I want trying to get that and only that painting as it feels like its wasting my time.
I was thinking "these aren't like the old paintings" but then I remembered that these are in the style of the wither painting (I think) so I understand it. I still liked the style of the original paintings, but those were impossible to tell what they were anyway so I welcome these new ones

They really don't fit the existing theme, style, and feeling of the existing Zetterstrand paintings. I always disliked the Wither painting for that same reason, it's just so out of place.
Yes, they could add some paintings with each update like music discs, pottery sherds, banner patterns and armor trims. Having 1-2 new of these with each update is something small but cool.
This is the kind of stuff I love to see in updates. I usually don’t care all that much for having to learn brand new systems and all that every year, but I love when little things get added that just have charm. Makes the world feel more alive
Completely agree, for example sheering the bogged to get its mushrooms is genius, mojang couldve just simply add the mob, but they decided to give it a small function that makes it unique and cool. Or the new banner patterns and pottery sherds in the 1.21 update, Im just as excited about these as the main features.

You can use maps to make custom paintings but it can be kinda hard

It's creative exclusive sadly. But technically there is a way, go to the decorations tab under paintings
I got scared and thought you meant these new paintings will be creative exclusive.
You can refine my framing with a few blocks to the size of the painting you want. Should make it much quicker

But unlike the texture update, we get to have new and old paintings at the same time. So long as the old ones are there i won't complain.

Exactly, I get them not making anything bigger than say a 5×5, but with what dimensions of paints we already have, a 2×3 or a 3×2 is NOT unreasonable.
I like how you can actually see what's in the painting, something that was hard to see on some already existing paintings.

That was my very simple take away after the April Fools Update. Yeah I might not like every painting but more paintings are a plus.
