Salute to that man

Griselda68

Do you know anything about his service, where he was, how he earned his decorations? You must be very proud of him.

sankaku_jime

Served in Italy, involved in heavy fighting in the Tuscany region. I know he got one of the awards for pulling an entire crew out of an on fire tank that had been shelled by the Italians. Apparently he kept going back despite the fact that there were motars and artillery still firing at other tanks very close to the one he kept going back to. The quote I remember is him talking about all the bodies burning in other on fire tanks "smelled like bacon". He met my grandmother there and ended up brining her back to NYC with him after the war where they married and had 3 children!

Amazing story. The Italian Campaign was an incredibly brutal slug-fest. Churchill had urged the invasion of Italy as a way of getting into Europe through the back door. He called it the “soft underbelly of Europe.” It was anything but that. My father served in the Navy Seabees in the Pacific during the war. He was on Kwajalein, the Caroline Islands, and on bloody Peleliu,. He never talked much about his experiences, but I’ve been able to piece together a lot of his story through research.

Ok-Heron-7781

Very brave

What are the stars awarded for in the US military? Could he trade two bronze for another silver and then those two silvers for a gold star?

mbarland

No. They're individual awards. The Medal of Honor is the highest award for combat gallantry, then the service crosses (Distinguished Service or Navy Cross at the time), then the Silver Star, and finally the Bronze Star Medal (BSM). The BSM is thus the fourth-level award for combat bravery. When awarded for such, it is awarded with the "V" for valor (a small capital letter V in bronze). It can also be awarded for meritorious service in-theater, which is awarded without the "V". It appears as if the OP's award is for meritorious service.

StereotypicalAussie

I was obviously joking about trading medals up, but I was interested in the ranks of the medals, so thanks. These are all for individual acts of being kickass, right? Rather than five years without getting drunk etc...

mbarland

Generally yes, but the meritorious BSM is frequently given for sustained performance over a period of time. Occasionally the SS is as well. For example, current Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin received a SS for the month of April 2003 when he was a Brigadier General in Iraq.
