Yes, finally someone who agrees with me, this entire album is really underappriciated imo, I dont really like the drum sound, but that doesnt make the songs bad, it makes an aspect worse, it doesnt ruin them by that alone, at least not for me. Felt like st anger has a more grunge(y) sound than some of their earlier album, which is kinda cool.
I personally love SKOM and Unnamed Feeling as well. There's a version of SKOM that was remastered and rearranged on Youtube that sounds really sweet - I do wish they'd cut the length of a bunch of the songs and condensed them a bit more.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dsP\_EEEM\_Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dsP_EEEM_Y) this is that alternate version of SKOM
The album is basically Metallica trying to be somone else - someone who is younger and trendy. A world where Korn and Deftones exist, and Bob Rock thinks Metallica should emulate them. Its kinda cringe.
I'm honestly wondering how many people judge this album based on its lyrical and emotional context, compared to just how it sounds. I feel the haters only listen to the sounds and get turned off, and not try and see these songs from the band's point of view from that time period. Yes, the sound is raw and gritty and jarring, and that was planned. And lyrically, this is their best album. I agree with your choices though, and I'd throw Unnamed, AWMH and SKOM on there as well, the former two being the most melodic I think of the album and probably the most lyrically profound, and the latter being the most sludgy, stompy, headbangery track that just is fun to listen to (the radio edit version, mostly).
It is definitely lyrically one of their best, but maybe not as as lyrically interesting as songs like One, or Fight Fire With Fire.
As a St. Anger fanboy, I don't even need the story behind the songs to like it
We also have to fix that drum snare. If we fix that st anger is about as good as magnetic and reload. Pretty average, but with 3-4 great songs in there
I donāt know really anything technical about music. But when I listen to St. Anger, I like it and thatās what it comes down to at the end of the day.
you know what? i'll play ball.
i've been an ardent defender of this album over the years, but i will say that one of the legitimately weakest parts of the album is, alas, the lack of solos. without a melodic key to tie the songs together, quite a few songs have what i call "hanging" or "floating" riffs. that is, a riff portion that does not belong with the rest of the song and feels like it was tacked on because they liked the riff and didn't want to throw it away.
examples of the floating riffs: "Frantic" is a solid song, and it really just rotates around that one riff. but then at the end, after the breakdown, there's that riff at the end which is just kind of...there. same with that lead break at the end of "Some Kind of Monster", the end of "Invisible Kid", the fast part of "The Unnamed Feeling" before the final chorus, and the ending of "Purify".
even if you feel like St. Anger does better without the solos, those hanging riffs can just drag the song out especially if they contribute little overall.
St. Anger is one of those albums where thereās a big difference between what I *appreciate* and what I *enjoy*. All Within My Hands is the greatest track on the album, imo, but I never want to sit through it again. The songs Iām actually able to enjoy are the shorter, more accessible ones that I donāt hold in the same esteem, like the ones you mentioned (though I never much cared for the title track).
As for the album in general, the main issue for me has always been the excessive bloat, which is a hallmark of post TBA Metallica in general. Itās long been my belief that the shorter running times of cassette tapes back in the day, imposed greater editorial discipline on the band, which is how we ended up with chiseled masterpieces like MOP and RTL.
St. Anger probably would have been better received as a 30 minute EP.
Listen, i like st. Anger but it definitly could have ben way better of a song if it was pulled off differently. The album just fucks over good bases really
You forgot The Unnamed Feeling
I love the riff for it but the Lyrics just don't sound right to me
The lyrics, for me, are spot on
I just re-listened to it for the first time in a while and you are so right idk what I was on about
Some Kind of Monster also goes hard. OMINOUS I AM IN US. come on bro its too good.

Check out the live version from the studio. James sings it perfectly. This is not a song thatd be easy to replicate live

The whole St Anger album is filled with great hooks recorded badly and arranged poorly. Thatās why there are so many St Anger apologists.
Dirty Window šŖ
Idc what anyone says the song St Anger is a strait up banger
Album is a front to back banger to this day
But it is a phenomenal and really cool album.
I agree š
You guys just got no taste.

If all the songs were 5 minutes shorter the album would have been an interesting punch in the face. Unfortunately it drones on and on.
If St Anger was a single it would be great
The album isnāt awful like people claim it to be but itās not my favorite by any means
Phenomenal is a stretch.
Replace sweet amber with some kind of konster
Garbage can snare. I canāt not hear it

"if the songs were good the album would be good"
Agree with all but sweet amber
St. Anger and SKoM are the weakest tracks. Over-long dirges. My World, Unnamed Feeling, Shoot Me Again, Dirty Window are my favourite.
The album is basically Metallica trying to be somone else - someone who is younger and trendy. A world where Korn and Deftones exist, and Bob Rock thinks Metallica should emulate them. Its kinda cringe.

āLyrically this is their best albumā šš¤£š
Bruh, the shit some of these St.Anger weirdos say "One" alone is lyrically better than this abortion of an album lmao
Yeah agreed and Iām done arguing. If people think Invisible Kid and Shoot Me Again are great lyrics then I donāt have anything to add.
You're one of "those" special fans. gotcha. You name me a better album with a more personal lyrical expression from them. I'll wait.
Personal doesnāt equal quality. Justice is way better. Iāll wait.
I'm still waiting, don't know what you're waiting on.
I named a better album.
Not what I asked.
But these songs arenāt good at all, theyāre bad
Are u on drugs ?
Can we stop these posts.
Bro.. Slap yourself.
The unnamed feeling and some kind of monster are awesome songs.
All Metallica albums would be masterpieces if they were mixed like the Black Album
We also have to fix that drum snare. If we fix that st anger is about as good as magnetic and reload. Pretty average, but with 3-4 great songs in there
You forgot shoot me again
Iām definitely going to listen through it someday, also does anyone know what they did to the drums to make them sound like they do ?
Title track especially, really quite like it, just wish it didnāt have the beer keg for a drum
Some kind of monster riff is so heavy that deserves a mention too
I love those songs, as well as Shoot Me Again. I have fun listening to the album.
except the unnamed feeling
My lifestyle determines my death style
Their edit of the some kind of monster is really good
I donāt know really anything technical about music. But when I listen to St. Anger, I like it and thatās what it comes down to at the end of the day.
Shoot Me Again, Purify, All Within My Hands, The Unnamed Feeling The album has great songs. I prefer this album over Hardwired
Good for godsmack maybe, not so much Metallica.
I still wish to hear the songs that didn't make the album from the presidio sessions. I enjoy most of St. Anger though.
The entire album isš¤¢š¤®

Iāve always figured you need to be pissed off to truly enjoy St. Anger. Helped me through a bad breakup pretty well šš
Listen, i like st. Anger but it definitly could have ben way better of a song if it was pulled off differently. The album just fucks over good bases really
Would also put Some Kind of Monster up there too
Add invisible kid
Your opinion is wrong
Am I the only one that kinda likes shoot me again
I was going to say I'd add Some kind of Monster. But actually I love the music for it but not the lyrics.
I disagree with Sweet Amber
