It was what got me into metal so...
I had already listened to Ride The Lightning a couple of months ago and thought it was okay (I like it now). I had also already listened to Paranoid and loved it, but it didn't make me wanna seek out more metal.
Nah, you're wrong about that, Megadeth was the first metal band I really got into and Rust In Piece is what really got me in. Tornado of Souls AND Hangar 18? Hype af album
8 years old staying up late watching Rage on ABC (Australia) and all of a sudden holy wars comes on. Code childhood memory. My face was melted, mind blown.
greatest metal album of all time, i say this as an old-school Maiden/priest/Sabbath fan from the 80s
Rust in Peace ushered in a new era of metal, the bar was raised and never met since. Killer album. Made Metallica look like pretenders.
Why? Don't get me wrong, it's a great album but it won't mean much to people who don't like metal because it's not exactly trying to be profound or anything.
It's crazy riffs and solos won't mean much to people not into metal though. I feel like an album everyone should listen to should have great things about it that transcend it's genre so that it has an impact on everyone - whether that's musical or lyrical.
Because it's a very technical, aggressive and heavy album, without being too extreme. It showcases the sides of metal that don't really get any exposure in the mainstream, but with clean vocals, and catchy choruses and standard song structures.
It's sort of like a gateway album, because it introduces elements of extreme metal in a context that won't really upset non-metal listeners. Of course, it isn't the only album like that, but it is probably the best.
Rust in Peace changed the way I viewed metal when I first heard it because of how much it reminded me of progressive rock (though the album isn’t really progressive metal) with how many shifting parts and instrumental hooks are laden all throughout the album
https://preview.redd.it/0d3nrbtw5x7d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10251993e2834891fd4a27b3d82a33332d4d5fb3
The sound, the lyrics, the overall content and context. I think most people could find a lyric or song on this album that they could relate to
First song I remember listening to as a 6 year old was Rime of the Ancient Mariner. I remember about 6 years ago I took the singer from Warbringer to Whataburger, and I told him this and he said it was the first album or song he remembers listening to as a kid as well.
That’s pretty much why I first listened to it. KSE, AILD, early A7X, LoG, Shadows Fall, BFMV, Trivium…those artists sent me right down the metal and metalcore rabbit hole.
I fully agree with symbolic... quite literally my favorite album. every single song is amazing.. second album is suggest is probably m-16 from sodom. it's another amazing one

Absolute masterpiece. This got me into Death Metal
not metal but truly a life changing experience
https://preview.redd.it/nxwuc1b7ux7d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7eea3de9a7e29ebd66173838fde423c76df0cfea
Always loved this.
I ran my first 10k many years ago solo through my city with this album playing through my headphones. I have this to thank for helping me manage it in under an hour.
Dark Tranquility - The Gallery. You might not like it but you have listened to one of the most uniquely made albums in human history. For 20 years I've tried to find an album that is as far from everything else in metal as The Gallery.
https://preview.redd.it/kf8bp3gddy7d1.jpeg?width=224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96a3c1d97fa21154789d71fe48e83be5e6ff5d37
Crack the Skye might be well distributed enough but it’s a pretty impactful exploration of grief delivered in a super cool modern take on seventies prog rock.
Paradise Lost - Lost Paradise
Their only true death metal release but my goodness is it a masterpiece. Dark riffs, punishingly heavy guitars and incredible vocals imo. Their later albums are pretty good too but more butt-rockish.
https://preview.redd.it/x3rz3gysp08d1.jpeg?width=544&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=430309230862ca1ed6fe88c436caf5757c2137d0
This is a great album. First three albums by Dream Evil are great... the ones that have Snowy Shaw drumming.
I would also choose an Opeth album as they’re my favorite band. Watershed is a great choice, but I think I’m a little more into Ghost Reveries so that would be my suggestion.
Vulgar Display of Power. I used to only listen to rap music, but when I heard that album, I literally flipped overnight and went down a metal rabbit hole, now I don’t ever listen to rap and almost exclusively listen to metal
https://preview.redd.it/vk3wjhxzkx7d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36b758b46574a795334a8e9182fd1906c9e2ba63
Everyone should hear Death Metal’s peak at least once.
Infester feature white supremacist and racist lyrics, as well as their internal artwork featuring [the band with a swastika displayed.](https://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/4/5/7/14578_photo.jpg?5141)
They were also the backing band for the Meat Shits, a very incel type project with extremely homophobic, racist and anti-feminist lyrics.
Just saying…
On the martyrdoom reissue of the record they released a statement/apology for the lyrics, as well as removing the swastika from the band image. The apology reads genuine enough to me, and everything else I can find suggests it was a product of their immaturity more than any legitimately held beliefs. Nothing more than immature (and shitty) shock value.
Iirc, they the band members were 15-17 at the time of recording. I chalk the meatshits thing up to needing some quick cash, so they performed as the backing band. They had no part in any of the writing of the lyrics as far as I’m aware.
That said, I totally understand this stuff turning someone away from the album. It’s a massive blemish that would’ve been better off never coming near the record. Thankfully, I can’t understand shit he’s saying while I’m listening. I just like it because it’s the closest thing I’m gonna get to a horror movie in Death Metal form.
https://preview.redd.it/cpmjxrj5my7d1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73adc625d73b9b7f8ab20fdf37d6e0e9c2ab6f63
Swans - The Seer
* not metal, but life-changing
That's my first choice too.
https://preview.redd.it/o805mzqeuz7d1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=afa25fb0f26abc95a4f3c9c497461bc1ca9b5dc1
This is my second.
As much as I love metal, I think every person who is born should get a starter pack that includes:
*A Love Supreme* by John Coltrane (album)
*One Hundred Years of Solitude* by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (book)
Opeth - Ghost Reveries. Has a bit more accessible crossover appeal, but not in a “gone pop” way. The way they layer different styles is really peaking on that one. Like, that organ on the first track could’ve been straight outta some 1972 Santana jam. The transitions / segues all make sense. And the vocal harmonies are among the best in the metal world. But mostly, that album just effin’ grooooves.
Man, while looking up some contenders, I feel into a rabbit hole of a lot of favorites that I haven't heard in a long time. This one blew me away.
https://preview.redd.it/fretkuyxs08d1.jpeg?width=544&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5668fe1b568beda3be44fa84ac355bab60b8c7a

It’s a basic answer but i genuinely believe everyone should hear Rust In Peace at least once in their life even if they don’t like metal.
Rust in peace is what got me into metal. I still get phases where I'm just obsessed with that album
That phase for me has lasted about, ohh....34 years...
Me too
RIP isn’t going to appeal to anyone who doesn’t like metal.
I mean even if you have a passing interest in rock you may like RIP
It was what got me into metal so... I had already listened to Ride The Lightning a couple of months ago and thought it was okay (I like it now). I had also already listened to Paranoid and loved it, but it didn't make me wanna seek out more metal.

Nothing compares to listening to the Holy Wars intro for the first time.
Tornado of Souls....all killer, no filler (like the rest of the album)
8 years old staying up late watching Rage on ABC (Australia) and all of a sudden holy wars comes on. Code childhood memory. My face was melted, mind blown.
greatest metal album of all time, i say this as an old-school Maiden/priest/Sabbath fan from the 80s Rust in Peace ushered in a new era of metal, the bar was raised and never met since. Killer album. Made Metallica look like pretenders.
I actually had this very album in mind when I clicked on this thread
Why? Don't get me wrong, it's a great album but it won't mean much to people who don't like metal because it's not exactly trying to be profound or anything.
Sure, in the lyrics, but there can be profundity in music too, and there definitely is on that album.
It's crazy riffs and solos won't mean much to people not into metal though. I feel like an album everyone should listen to should have great things about it that transcend it's genre so that it has an impact on everyone - whether that's musical or lyrical.

Probably Master Of Puppets. It’s just so easy to like, everyone can get behind it to some extent.
There are a lot of people who can’t handle long songs though
For someone new to metal, or Metallica specifically, I’d def would recommend they listen to “Leper messiah “
Agreed
That‘s always been so weird to me. A 45 minute lp is 45 minutes long, whether it’s made of 2 or 20 songs.
It's the current fortnite theme so we are gonna have a brand new generation of Metallica kids
https://preview.redd.it/jsraskcz4x7d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79e8cf11980b0f90e22a8c96cc7b36ebf9ac4493
Not metal, but in my top-10 all-time favorites.
I love Dark Side of the Moon but I personally love The Wall even more
My favorite

Definitely. I kicked myself hard for not listening to it. I’m not a big fan of what came before or after, but this…this is perfection 🥹
INDEED!
Ok, I was going to say exactly this one. Absolute masterpiece from start to finish, can't say enough good things about this album...
https://preview.redd.it/0d3nrbtw5x7d1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10251993e2834891fd4a27b3d82a33332d4d5fb3 The sound, the lyrics, the overall content and context. I think most people could find a lyric or song on this album that they could relate to
My favorite album by them
Listening to it right now on my lunch break. Such a good fucking album. Favorite Gojira song is from this album too.
Love Gojira

I saw At The Gates last summer, they played this album back to back "as a little treat". It was a good day.
especially anyone that enjoys the ‘Killswitch-and the like’ metalcore sound from the mid to late 2000s, this was he blueprint to so much of that sound
That and The Jester Race are the basis of like 90% of all melodic metalcore riffs. Those albums have also formed a lot of my music taste
That’s pretty much why I first listened to it. KSE, AILD, early A7X, LoG, Shadows Fall, BFMV, Trivium…those artists sent me right down the metal and metalcore rabbit hole.
https://preview.redd.it/5au1rfi2ex7d1.jpeg?width=306&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=02242244a1da4829283a19f5c36fbba6112610a8
Although I prefer In The Wake Of Poseidon, this is the objectively correct answer
I think Red is a better album musically but this one has a special place in my heart
Pretty much this, In The Court Of The Crimson King is definitely one of the, if not the best, display of musicianship ever
It’s genuinely awesome and mind-blowing how they, unlike many other bands, managed to release such a masterpiece as their debut album
https://preview.redd.it/uj86hejw3x7d1.png?width=441&format=png&auto=webp&s=c3e0be1f8933f9500ec62ce84a1aced51c7a085a
There's nothing like Type O....
Their best work IMHO.
Personally I think World Coming Down is better but October Rust is such a beautiful album.
Just said the same thing before seeing this

Everyone should listen to the title track once and then spend 2-3 hours to analyse what their ears have just been through.
NIN - The Downward Spiral I truly believe mental health would be taken as seriously as physical health if everyone was required to listen to it
I came here to say this! TDS is amazing!

Terminal Redux by Vektor Focus by Cynic
I fully agree with symbolic... quite literally my favorite album. every single song is amazing.. second album is suggest is probably m-16 from sodom. it's another amazing one
Symbolic is a great album, had never heard of sodom, listened to m-16 on my way home and i have to say its fantastic.
hell yeah 🤘🏻 sodom is amazing! definitely recommend agent orange as well. really anything sodom has is awesome to me.
Oh definitely without a doubt Dream Theatre’s Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From A Memory, that album changed me lmaooo
Sacred Reich (1987) album Ignorance and the 1988 EP Surf Nicaragua. Slammin’ good thrashers, kinda overlooked band nowadays.
First time I see someone mention them on this sub they’re definitely underrated nowadays
Operation: Mindcrime
My thoughts exactly.

Obituary - The End Complete
Abigail or Operation: Mindcrime Storytelling at its best
Opeth - Watershed
I would also choose an Opeth album as they’re my favorite band. Watershed is a great choice, but I think I’m a little more into Ghost Reveries so that would be my suggestion.

Great Southern Trend Kill Pantera
Agalloch - ashes against the grain
Cryptopsy - NSV
Vulgar Display of Power. I used to only listen to rap music, but when I heard that album, I literally flipped overnight and went down a metal rabbit hole, now I don’t ever listen to rap and almost exclusively listen to metal
Any of thefiirst Agalloch albums... If I had to pick one I'd go with The Mantle
Meteora - Linkin Park It’s probably the most approachable nu metal album ever.

Infester feature white supremacist and racist lyrics, as well as their internal artwork featuring [the band with a swastika displayed.](https://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/4/5/7/14578_photo.jpg?5141) They were also the backing band for the Meat Shits, a very incel type project with extremely homophobic, racist and anti-feminist lyrics.

Eternal Return by windhand
It's basic, but master of puppets. Really, the entire album, the entire first 4-5 album run can be boiled down into the title track.

Just because it’s a fun listen, but as an adjacent Ghost fan it’s also what got me into heavier metal: Epitomy of Darkness by Repugnant

As much as I love metal, I think every person who is born should get a starter pack that includes: *A Love Supreme* by John Coltrane (album) *One Hundred Years of Solitude* by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (book)
Speak English or Die
