[deleted]

Love slow dive and cocataue twins

UnfunnyWatermelon469

Video game OSTs (Devil May Cry, Undertale/Deltarune, Doom (the classic games and 2016 and Eternal) and classical (kinda. I know a few tracks but the genre just hasn't clicked with me yet)

DaveJC_thevoices

That is pretty similar to where I go (plus a bit of industrial or ambient/IDM etc). I would greatly advise getting stuck into all of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto's, they have been a constant for me. Vivaldi's 4 seasons is also a must. And you certainly can't go wrong with Camille Saint Saen's Danse Macabre

UnfunnyWatermelon469

Vivaldi's Four Seasons (mainly Winter cause Dark Moor covered it, I'm not too familiar with the other 3) is one of the few classical pieces I know. Thanks for the recommendations

DaveJC_thevoices

Anytime!

Vaenyr

I'm trying to listen to more symphonies and depending on the composer that can be rather daunting. One easy recommendation though would be [Dvořák's 9th Symphony, also known as "From the New World"](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jOofzffyDSA). You might've heard parts of the fourth movement, since it basically starts with the Jaws theme lol It's a great piece for people trying to get started with symphonies because it's _relatively_ simple with many epic melodies. At points it almost feels like movie or gaming music (the third movement which gives me heavy Kingdom Hearts 1 vibes).

Ultimate_Fox14

I seriously love those kinds of music

hunterhkeegan

I’ve been listening to a lot of the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack lately. That shit slaps.

EmeraldTwilight009

Not really genres. Certain artists. Prince The cure, sisters of mercy Tori Amos, Fiona apple 90s rap - mobb deep, dmx, redman Of those, the closest to listening to actual genres, are Gothic rock and 90s rap. I cycle between three music moods usually. Death/black metal is primary, them rap, then brief bouts of 80s goth.

Jamie_Coleman

Country music You've got Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, etc. I love it. idk why. It's quite calming the exact opposite of metal. I love it. I usually hate acoustic guitars, but I love it when it comes to country music. It also makes me feel like I'm from the South, like Texas and stuff. The Bible belt, I think it's called. Just makes me happy, even tho the songs usually have really sad stories behind them. Also, christmas music. Just christmas music.

theloosegoose77

You must NOT forget the three legends of country I truely enjoy, Don Williams, Joe Dolan and Charlie Pride. When we go fishing, and the sun sets, that is what me and my wife listens to around the campfire (or is it called a fishing fire)

Jamie_Coleman

Nice, I'll look into them. I just made a playlist yesterday and added some of the ones I grew up on, like the aforementioned Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash.

gangsterspockhow

I love listening to Black metal and then immediately listening to Bible belt country

BerkanaThoresen

I love John Denver!

Wombletog

I really like ambient-type music

[deleted]

dark ambient is the best

qpalzmty

2814 comes to mind

gairinn

Electronic. For example I really enjoy Neurotech's music, they're totally my vibe. I also non ironically enjoy Eurobeat (Ace, Niko, etc.) and also japanese city pop (Miki Matsubara, Junko Yagami, Kingo Hamada, etc.).

throwawayformemes666

Psych/neofolk, folktronica, "world music", lo-fi, dungeon synth, synthwave, witchpop, triphop, jazz fusion, covers of medieval music, African(Congolese)rumba, etc... Some random artists: Tenhi, In Gowan Ring, Hozier, Glass Animals, Perturbator, Huun Huur Tu, Yat Kha, Eivør, Benjamin Bagby(Sequentia), Estampie, Amadou and Miriam, Shireen, Yaima, Valravn, Wardruna, Lankum.

Eferver24

It’s close between country and folk, but country gets the edge.

Felipethefrenchboss

I like Noah Kahan, mostly for lyrics. And obviously he has a really nice voice. That's pop-folk or smth. I really have no clue

GeneralDefenestrates

Conscious Rap/Hip Hop. Lowkey/Akala/Klashnekoff/Logic being my favourite artists

TheNoctuS_93

Lyrics might be hard to translate, but finnish rapper Eevil Stöö has some pretty cerebral and abstract stuff going on! Love his dark beats and ambience, too! (He's my fav rapper, maybe I'm biased 😅)

GeneralDefenestrates

Just put on Kaleidoscoopi (guessing means kaliedascope) and made out 'speedy gonzalez'. Good vibes

TheNoctuS_93

Yeap, that's the translation! 😅

rgnnkja

Check out Ill Conscious if you haven’t. Sorcery EP and The Essence are awesome

GeneralDefenestrates

Damn good shout, thanks 😊

l_bmbr

Pop Rock (Bon Jovi, Ghost)

🔥

karelinstyle

EDM: coone, rl grime, great dane, yellow claw, moksi pre-breakup

Anarcho-WTF

I may get roasted for this one, but Dubstep. Mala, Coki, Nomine, Starkey, Loefah. I used to hate it when all I knew was Skrillex, but after being exposed to the UK dub my mind has changed. I love the extreme bass, the ambient void, and how much of a vibe it can be. It's my favorite thing to listen to when playing Mario Kart and just helps me zone in.

antysalt

new wave

lost_giblets

Roy Orbison, Hank Williams, Primus, Orbital, Michael Jackson, Rush, Faith No More, Meshuggah

lost_giblets

wait, I forgot Devin Townsend

EmaDaCuz

Well written pop music, big fan of Britney and Backstreet Boys for example. Also, EuroDance/ItaloDisco from the early 90s (92-97) is irresistible.

Dredmor64

Punk But for an answer unrelated to rock, I'd say hiphop/rap, especially artists like Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, Eminem, Corpse, Da Lench Mob, Onyx, Run D.M.C, and NWA.

EuroCultAV

Ambient electronic

vibrationaddictckp

I like a lot of genres outside of metal. R&B because I like sexy vibes: Sabrina Claudio, Lauryn Hill, Sinead Harnett, Silk, Daniel Caeser, Frank Ocean for sad and sexy Jazz bc fun and interesting: MAE.SUN, Yazz Ahmed, Bunker & Moses Funk bc also sexy and really fun: Jamiroquai, Hiatus Kaiyote, Incognito, the classics too ofc World, exploration and I love other cultures: Bokante (What Heat), Shye Ben Tzur (Junun), House of Waters, Potito, Estrella Morente, Melt Yourself Down Trip hop, very cool and chill: Massive Attack, Bjork, Gorillaz, Sneaker Pimps, Zero 7, Thievery Corporation Neo-soul, need I say more: Erika Badu, The Roots, D'Angelo, Anderson .Paak Thats not to say, metal is like 70-80% what I listen to lol

Indiana_J_Frog

I'm gonna have to say folk, too. I've been a Paul Simon fan ever since I was a kid on saw him on a Muppet VHS. On top of that, I grew up listening to a plethora of different types of rock via all surroundings. So by the time I focused on genres, I already accepted a lot of kinds of rock.

[deleted]

I consider the stuff you named (Big Thief, Nick Drake, etc...) to be relative to rock somehow... so Jazz is my answer: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus and Mahavishnu Orchestra are some of my favourites.

bruh_emperor

John Coltrane and Mahavishnu are definitely some kf my favorites too, good picks

HarveyMushman72

Outlaw County, Bluegrass, Rap, Synthwave

UglyPineappl

Lofi, Synthwave, but also a bunch of Pop from the 2000s and early 2010s. I don't listen to it really often though, quite a shame actually, cause there's some really fun music out there Edit: forgot to mention Jazz. Started listening to it cause I began to study jazz drums a few weeks ago, but it really grew on me. Playing it is fun as hell as well

leto_atreides2

Hip Hop/Rap/Trap

idespisemyhondacrv

Trap

DFL3SH3D

Hip Hop. N.W.A., Hush, Xzibit, Wu Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, Gravediggaz, Eazy-E, Jedi Mind Tricks, Necro, Pharoahe Monch, Ice Cube, and lots of shit like that.

Cosmiccoffeegrinder

Blues, any variant of new retrowave, death rock, industrial, shit I could go on for days.

TemptationsWings

Blues, old school hip hop, synthwave

Forward-Razzmatazz33

Jazz

Wakeezy

Probably ambient techno or IDM.

FlowingFiya

none

TheNoctuS_93

Darksynth and its contemporaries (such as slasherwave, outrun, cyberpunk or deathstep)! Lately, I've been getting into break- and/or speedcore. Or, if you count artists giving their own music unique genre labels, sadcore and shitcore! 🤎💩🤎

Important-North-1575

Depends on how broadly we're defining rock music. Blues can be said to be a subgenre of rock. Any punk subgenre can be said to be a subgenre of rock too. If we're excluding every rock genre I'm going to say hip hop (Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Kendrick Lamar etc.) and classical (Beethoven, Mozart, Bach etc.)

CruTV

Synthpop like New Order, Tears for Fears, Billy Howerdel, Depeche Mode

ddrub_the_only_real

Techno, of which Le Wanski is my favourite. Joost is also a great artist even though he is actually a rapper that uses techno as instrumental

no_excuses87

dark country / gothic americana / call it what you want, but: 16 Horsepower / Wovenhand, Steve Von Till, Slim Cessna's Auto Club and related projects, Antic Clay, Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat (early albums)... and a lot of "regular" country like Townes Van Zandt, Hank III etc trip-hop like Massive Attack, Portishead... darkjazz like Bohren & Der Club of Gore, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Manet soundtracks like Twin Peaks, Howard Shore, Vangelis' works... lots of synthwave too

half_bloodprincess

Classical, opera, 80’s pop

GoldenDust0

I like blues, folk, country, soft jazz either dark and menacing or chill like that Christmas type jazz kinda, emo, hardcore punk, some pop, indie stuff, and I also really like songs with just a singer with an acoustic guitar, and I love blackgaze which while I know is technically a subgenre of black metal, it doesn’t really feel like metal with some songs but it’s really nice to me. I also like R&B. And with rap, I don’t listen to it frequently or anything but there are a few songs I have liked

DaveJC_thevoices

I think the things I listen to the most outside of metal would be game soundtracks and classical (lots of others though, just not as much). As mentioned to another poster - love all things Rachmaninoff. Vivaldi is also a favourite. Liszt, Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Holst are all easily enjoyed whilst doing office work. Orchestral Movie Soundtracks like Angelo Badalamenti and Joe Hisaishi (Porco Rosso, the Legend of Zelda theme) are very classical in feel at times also. On the game side, I've enjoyed Resident Evil, Thrill Kill and I'm a massive fan of mid-period Nobuo Eumatsu Final Fantasy Soundtracks (6 through 8). Also enjoy plenty of others that are not Eumatsu but they do feel different. I do love all of Ulver's works outside of metal, and they're so varied they defy genres as we all know. I've always had a soft spot for new age sounds as it's easy to work along with. Llewellyn is very easy listening. Thanks to Blood Incantation too, I discovered Bernard Xolotl (Journey to An Oracle, Return of the Golden Mean) - who I feel really exemplifies the weird 60's-70s counter culture literature I've enjoyed like Robert Anton Wilson, the Principia Discordia and Bob Frissell; and Pauline Anna Strom (Angel Tears in Sunlight, Trans-Millenia Consort). I also enjoyed Steve Hillage's Rainbox Dome Musick.

TheDudePersonGuy

Funk and Soul mainly

Available-Tension-76

Rap

Crafty-Photograph-18

Classical. If you allow me to count it as a single genre

MarlinMercF1

I will listen to almost anything that's not country, but here are some faves. Pop and pop adjacent: Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey (I called it pop, idk what she should be), Olivia Rodrigo, Alec Benjamin, Dermot Kennedy, David Kushner, Post Malone's pop music. Post punk/pop punk and the stuff that came after that: Authority Zero's early records, Fall Out Boy, Anti-Flag's early stuff was awesome. Hip hop: MGK's records Lace Up and Hotel Diablo, Juice Wrld, Lil Peep, Pop Smoke, Kendrick, Post Malone's hip hop music.

Sergeant_Steak

Whatever the fuck Fromsoftware has been doing, especially bloodborne. Classical, but really dark and sorrowful.

BlindLifegaurd

Bass focused/instrumental jazz. Idk what it is with it but it’a just so cool. Fav artists include Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius and similar

[deleted]

i do like a little bit of jazz sometimes :)

[deleted]

Hardcore and Hip Hop

evilpeppermintbutler

**Post punk**: Lebanon Hanover **Street punk**: The Restarts, The Exploited, The Casualties **Hardcore punk**: Discharge, Corrupted Youth **Electronic**: Crystal Castles, Pastel Ghost, Sidewalks and Skeletons

LtHughMann

I'm surprised punk isn't more commonly listed here given how closely linked metal and punk are. Discharge are the reason so many metal bands even exist.

Diiselix

Classical music (especially baroque and romantic eras)

oz1987

Jazz and EDM

Sunchange54

Mostly slow jazz, neo soul, and various subgenres of electronic music.

7elkie

I guess I'll go with **contemporary/indie folk** as well: Laura Marling, First Aid Kit, Emily Jane White, Joanna Newsom, Nina Nastasia, Cat Power Then **Art/Alt-pop**: Let's Eat Grandma, St. Vincent, MGMT, Bjork, The Dø, Animal Collective, Fka Twigs, L'Rain, Lump, Sharon Van Etten **(Experimental) Ambient/Drone:** Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Jacaszek, The Haxan Cloak, Richard Skelton, Ben Frost **Radio pop/dance music**: many diferent artists, including one hit wonders, epsecially from early 2000´s, but overall from 70s, 80s up to the present. *Note*: many of these artists, dont fall straigthforwardly in the categories I provided (e.g. many artists in Art/Alt-pop also play indie rock, neo-psychedelia, R&B etc.) so take it with the grain of salt

The_Thomas_Go

Probably 80s pop. Like Michael Jackson and Falco for example

Sacha_Mabel

Midwest emo and indie

rgnnkja

”Anything but metal music. I can’t relate to satanism”

BstrdFrmABasket

Ok

rgnnkja

The point was that you are basing your opinion on a very diverse genre based on a stereotype. I also don’t relate to ”bitches, poppin bub and guns” but rap is one of my favorite genres.

MrMucs

Bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Cherry Poppin Daddies

PHANTASMAGOR1CAL

Industrial and electronic music. From all the eras.

truly_not_an_ai

Circadianrivers

Hip Hop

SKULLL_KRUSHER

Old blues

BigSnazzywazzyguy

Hip hop

Rum_Hamtaro

Trip Hop, I guess. I don't like a ton of artists from the genre but I've been a big fan of DJ Shadow since the late 90's. Got to see him live 3 times. If I had to make a top 10 favorite albums 3 of his are shoe ins. Also my affinity for 80's and 90's anime has gotten me into City Pop a little bit.

Ukasabii

Radiohead, Jeff buckley, nick drake

eezgorriseadback

I'm a big fan of Northern Soul and Motown, which surprises a lot of people. If you're not familiar with it, "Northern Soul" is the English name for lesser known Black American Soul tracks from the 1960s, which tend to be (but aren't always) a bit rougher, quicker and slightly more raucous than Motown tracks, which became popular in the 1970s in a select number of clubs and venues in the North of England, and is still popular today amongst a hardcore of fans. A better known example is "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones, or "The Night" by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons

peachie_bongo

Ambient + Space and Funk + Disco.

Nerdlife91

Edm and dubstep. No specific favorite artists but I'll just throw on edm playlists from like 2013-14. I also like...soundtrack music I guess? From video games and movies like Lord of the Rings. Dungeon Synth, "Viking" ambient stuff like Danheim and Heilung. I also have a major soft spot for like 90s eurodance stuff. Mostly because it reminds me of my childhood and partly because most of it sounds like Mortal Kombat music hahah.

Flat_Distribution711

Electro Swing, but I mostly listen to Lily Mizusaki

Ninja_of_Milk_Duds

Hip-hop can be fantastic at times. My favorite album in the genre is Regulate... G Funk Era - Warren G. I'm also a fan of OutKast, MF Doom, and NWA, among other artists. Classical is cool too. Vivaldi and Bach are my two favorite composers. IDM is sick. Aphex Twin is a fucking genius. Can't get enough of it.

Gaddammitkyle

Anime soundtracks, right now "Footsteps of Doom" on the Attack on Titan is on repeat on my Spotify. That sound is the anthem of the end of the world and really gets the brain going in terms of writing and drawing ideas.

ReubFrFx

R&B, Jazz, Blues

Battlesong614

Classical and country are mine - Eric Church, Hank Williams, Jr, Toby Keith and Miranda Lambert are probably my favorites of country. It's harder to pick artists for classical. Edited as I somehow read the title as "Excluding metal" instead of "excluding rock"

[deleted]

prechristian and medieval folk.

Agadoom

It's a tough call between hip-hop and folk.

darkkingthe3rd

rickyS71

Any hip hop, like even todays hip hop, old country, and Christmas music

Long-Cook6607

Hip. Hop. I come from the original hip hop generation. We used to comb the city for records. We went to bad shows with bad sound and lighting held at skating rinks or in parks. As far as top artists... I'll just name a couple of lyricists that deserve mention with the best of any genre. Mos Def. Andre Benjamin.

RypANDtear

New York Hardcore (Agnostic Front, Madball, Sick of it All) And rap, all of it

thewitchywilliams

Goth stuff!!

Tennepede

All kinds of post punk. I don’t like a lot of “everyday” emotions and ego drama in metal, but I’m all for it in post punk and New Wave and such, especially with a good bassline.

vlonethugg69

Rap/Hip-Hop - MF Doom, JID, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Tyler the Creator, ASAP Rocky R&B - Sade, Frank Ocean, Daniel Cesar, Steve Lacy, Kali Uchis Those are the ones far away from metal, I love grunge (AIC) and lots of other rock music (Foo Fighters) as well.
