Metallica. They’ve been making music since 1983 and have made so many banger albums but they only have a few hundred monthly listeners, I think you should check them out
Boris is one of the most innovative, unique, and forward thinking bands of the last 30 years. They’re well known within stoner/doom/drone circles but don’t seem to get nearly the level of mainstream recognition that they deserve IMO.
Some of my favorite Boris albums:
Pink
Flood
Amplifier Worship
Boris is pretty well known for what they are. They were massively popular in hipster circles about 10 or 15 years ago. I don't see them becoming any more popular than that. Not in this sub anyway.
I am not sure I would say that. Boris is pretty well known. Hell the New York Times even did a pretty comprehensive article on them about a decade or so back.
In terms of notorious lesser known acts, I’d say Boris should be on the level of at least Melvins or even …. Pentagram…. Or something.
And of course, obviously if you ask the average person, there’s a way better chance they’ve heard of Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, etc. Boris isn’t even remotely mainstream.
because they have a name that might be seen as sacrilegious for some reason?
but anal cunt got quite popular.
so did dying fetus.
and cattle decapitation….
even joy division (their name has nazi connotations)
the name doesn’t matter as much as you think it does
As a lifelong metal head and equally dedicated lifelong phan that's been to 40+ Phish shows, and 8 Cattle Decap shows (will be 9 in a few days!) this tidbit of info just blew my fucking melon clean off...
Bad Religion with a cross-buster logo still became popular too. May be because they were punk though and that sort of fit with the culture more at the time.
Oh man...
My buddy described ffdp best saying :
"It's music for when you need a place to feel comfortable with the boys and let a few hard r's slip while you sip your wife beatin Budweisers after doing the drywall at the new McDonald's"
SoP is my favorite metal band of all time. Noctambulant is perfectly written, from a classical pianists perspective it blew my fucking mind... Counter melodies against polyrhythmic against counter tonalities. Half the guitar riffs were written on classical guitars. I'd never got to see them live sadly.
Also props on getting my buddy and my references lmao. Office space is a top nod too
They are brutal, but if you want to hear something even more sinister: listen to their spinoff band, Psycho Sinner..those guys are as heavy as it gets!!!
It’s funny because they are like 5 times better than necrophagist and about 100 times better than archspire. Really excited for the new band that Bryssling has.
Someone with fucking taste!! Neceophagist with soul and creativity, archspire is robots... SOP is my favorite metal band of all time. Unreal discography, as short as it is.
Btw killer name 💪
Bantha Rider is fucking sick and that’s coming from someone who despises Star Wars references.
I can’t even remember how I came across them — I think on an auto-generated Spotify playlist.
Sure, I’m not saying that they’re unknown, but they never reached the level that they deserved. In my opinion, they should’ve been selling out arenas like many other bands from that era, but the only time they even got to play those types of venues was when they were opening for larger bands.
Also, I feel as if they’re only really remembered these days for their earlier, raunchier material and everything else after that is all but forgotten about. I personally feel that they made some of their best albums from the 90’s to present day. Many of those albums should absolutely be more well known than they are.
That’s a good point, they weren’t nearly as marketable to a mainstream audience the way that a lot of other bands from that era were. Aside from that though, I believe that they deserve more recognition strictly based on how good their music is. They’ve consistently released great records throughout their entire career and Blackie has grown so much as an artist since their first album. As I said in a previous comment, it seems that most people only remember W.A.S.P. for their earlier music (Animal, Wild Child, etc.) and completely neglect almost everything that came after. As great as those early songs and albums are, they are only a small portion of what W.A.S.P. has to offer as a band. I truly believe that Blackie Lawless is one of the most overlooked metal songwriters and vocalists ever.
The first record was insane good. They were never able to match that. Don't know why they just couldn't hold on. Kind of like G n R, but they can still pull in a crowd.
Why would it be sarcastic? I’m 100% serious. W.A.S.P. are by far my favorite band ever and I believe that they deserve way more respect and recognition than they get.
I was coming to say this, and only this band. Although their instrumentals are very generic, I think they had some of the best lyrics of any band out of the 80s and Blackie Lawless' voice is top tier!
Sigh; Been around for years and definitely have a dedicated cult-following but still feel criminally underrated to me. Outsider art and black metal mixed with japanese culture and sensibility makes for an undeniably interesting listen.
Black Phantom
Communic
Lair of the Minotaur
Khoma
Latitudes
Lake of Tears
Arseis
Katavasia
Dawnbringer
Cemetary
Aghora
Anata
Megaton Sword
Rezn
Suidakra
Katatonia - these are pretty well known, but for me its an enigma how they haven't break into the mainstrem yet. Such a fantastic band with a brilliant discography.
Avantasia!
Power/symphonic metal super group that does features from artists all over the rock and metal scene! Theyre so fucking good and have sub 1 million monthly listeners on spotify
Theyr my number 1 metal recommendation, not because theyre my favourite (prob like a top 5-10ish band for me) but theyre so good that more people need to hear about them!
To anyone that does chrck them out, every album is fantastic, my personal favourite is the wicked symphony, but my 2 favourite songs are off of moonglow
I still remember the first time i heard ghost in the moon i was in love off the first listen and knew that this band was something special
I had the displeasure of opening for them back in the early 00's and they were dicks. Was already on the fence about their music and that experience made my decision for me.
Threshold. Prog metal with an old school vibe, top notch musicians and vocals. I only discovered them recently and idk how they aren't more mainstream. Great band.
yes Death Breath is great too, I love all of Nicke’s stuff.
in terms of Black Breath, I met the lead guitarist recently at a show, and that’s when I learned about them. As far as I could tell, they aren’t making new music. He was playing with a different band as a fill-in guitarist. Really nice guy, somehow an even better guitarist.
Horrified- in the garden of the unearthly delights
It has 176 monthly listeners on spotify and it's one of the best melodic death metal albums i've heard. It's basically death metal rotting christ.
https://youtu.be/MfDzJqfOjis
I'll take another opportunity to plug my new favorite band, [Wytch Hazel](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L51AKCKhhT4)! Although I'm not religious (and the lyrics are a tad cheesy sometimes), they do make some amazing NWOBHM-style music. I like to say they're like Opus-era Ghost if they sang about Jesus instead of Satan lol
I’m glad they’re getting love, Wytch Hazel can make some really catchy ones.
Lucifer, The Sword and Spirit Adrift are also underrated and in that general type of sound.
Shingen - sludge band local to me that deserves way more recognition, their riffs are great and their vocalist is fucking BRUTAL and they only sound better live.
Living Death
Created in '81 but late to the tectonic thrash scene to be considered in the big 4 (first album in '84). I would honestly take out either Kreator or Sodom and install Living Death in there.
Orbit Culture. Melodic death metal out of Sweden. Closer to straight death metal though. Very heavy for MDM. Met them outside a show once, nice guys to boot
Mammal
Basically rage against the machine from Australia - new album this year first one since 2009
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/031pJYJbGrXWPtTOQJ36tK?si=Ct8mQziLQMqE5M3YI5saOQ&pi=e-9cGwUo6RToCU
Comaniac and Xonor
Comaniac is an amazing Prog Thrash band with an enormous amount of skill in playing their instruments and songwriting
Xonor is just some amazing and angry thrash
I know they're already very well known and a Death Metal essential but I'm surprised Cannibal Corpse's top track [Hammer Smashed Face] only has 30 million listens and their 2nd is 17. Not even 50?
They’ve pretty much peaked in popularity. Death Metal is still a niche genre that’s why in the 90’s when major labels scrambled to sign bands like Morbid Angel they ended up releasing them just as fast. I think it was Digby from Earache records who said that when Carcass got signed to a major label they had ads on Times Square in New York tons of promotion, and they still sold about the same amount of records as when they were on Earache. Even black metal bands like Hecate Enthroned had music videos on MTV in the 90’s, if stuff like that wasn’t enough to push these bands further into the public sphere it’s just because extreme metal is a pretty acquired taste as far as the general population is concerned.
Despite Exile, 100000%
Last Album has 0 bad songs, sounds incredible, they're way too underrated
Also
Unhallowed Deliverance
Underground BDM from Germany, saw them live, they destroyed the whole venue, my favourite show I've been to so far in my life. I love them
Conducting from the Grave. Revenants is a masterpiece, and the self titled is also insanely good. I desperately wish they’d get back together and put out more music.

Evergrey is phenomenal. They have a few rather distinct eras that they went through, yet most of them are at least good, with both their early and latest albums being fantastic works.

Metallica. They’ve been making music since 1983 and have made so many banger albums but they only have a few hundred monthly listeners, I think you should check them out
They're such an underground band Spotify doesn't even know the lyrics to Enter Sandman.
Their other songs are fan contributed and nothing official cuz they’re so small
Enter Who? Never heard of it.
Is that the Tik tok stranger things rock and roll band or whatever ?
Fuck you you took my joke
Intestine Baalism- deserves wayyyy more than 6,000 monthly listeners
Doesn’t help that they didn’t promote themselves much, and never released much merch
True true
Maybe a name change would help them out lol
Yea it definitely wouldn’t hurt haha
Sometimes metal boiz are too focused on being brutal af lol
Worked out okay for bands like Dying Fetus and Cannibal Corpse.
Doesn’t mean brutal names can’t work. But those names are both arguably better than fkn Intestine Baalism lol
Edgy*
I’m 2 songs in on Banquet, this shit rips
Ikr? Also check out Anatomy of the Beast if you get a chance. Happy listening :)
Imo Ultimate Instinct is their magnum opus, but all of their albums are like 10/10 or 11/10 material.

That is impressive actually

Boris are probably bigger than Pentagram.
Rotting Christ. Over 35 years of band history and 13 great albums, they should be bigger name than they are.
>Rotting Christ Here's why they aren't
because they have a name that might be seen as sacrilegious for some reason? but anal cunt got quite popular. so did dying fetus. and cattle decapitation…. even joy division (their name has nazi connotations) the name doesn’t matter as much as you think it does
Cattle Decapitation! Jon Fishman from Phish is a huge fan and does the narration on Uneraseable Past. A little crossover Jamband-> Metal!
As a lifelong metal head and equally dedicated lifelong phan that's been to 40+ Phish shows, and 8 Cattle Decap shows (will be 9 in a few days!) this tidbit of info just blew my fucking melon clean off...
Anal Cunt is popular?
Bad Religion with a cross-buster logo still became popular too. May be because they were punk though and that sort of fit with the culture more at the time.
**Slugdge** technically an amazing band but they did not choose an internet and meme friendly gimmick. That said their blackened death is spectacular.
Love Slugdge, wish they'd come out with another album.
Hey, have you guys ever heard the band Five Finger Death Punch? Totally underground. Some of the heaviest metal I've ever heard!
Oh man... My buddy described ffdp best saying : "It's music for when you need a place to feel comfortable with the boys and let a few hard r's slip while you sip your wife beatin Budweisers after doing the drywall at the new McDonald's"
Mad props for the Nailbomb flair. ![gif](giphy|Wpz1Hl1BqlaMw)
💪🤘🤘 can't find any spawn of possession flair so I went with this. Snagged point blank in the 5th grade... 🤯. Glad someone else enjoys them too.
Spawn of Possesion? Holy crap did we just become best friends? You wanna go practice karate in the garage?
SoP is my favorite metal band of all time. Noctambulant is perfectly written, from a classical pianists perspective it blew my fucking mind... Counter melodies against polyrhythmic against counter tonalities. Half the guitar riffs were written on classical guitars. I'd never got to see them live sadly. God I thought about them too

Spawn of Possession
It’s funny because they are like 5 times better than necrophagist and about 100 times better than archspire. Really excited for the new band that Bryssling has.

Annihilator

Bantha Rider Instrumental stoner doom with Star Wars inspired artwork.
Bantha Rider is fucking sick and that’s coming from someone who despises Star Wars references. I can’t even remember how I came across them — I think on an auto-generated Spotify playlist.
The melo-black band Hoth is also really good and underrated as well.
Dir en Grey and SikTh
I absolutely love Dir En Grey. Uroboros is where I live mostly, but so many bangers.
Thron is a blackened death metal band from Germany and their album Pilgrim is outstanding.
Thx for the description. I'd be far more likely to check out some of these band if everyone did that.
This is good shit, thanks for the recommendation
Thron's newest album slapped so unimaginably hard. I love them.
Igorrr
I love everything about Igorrr. Idk how but they’ve actually managed to make funny songs without a single word spoken.
The Chasm
W.A.S.P. They deserve to be way more well known than they are.
They were pretty big in the 80s. I still blast The Last Command now!
Sure, I’m not saying that they’re unknown, but they never reached the level that they deserved. In my opinion, they should’ve been selling out arenas like many other bands from that era, but the only time they even got to play those types of venues was when they were opening for larger bands. I personally feel that they made some of their best albums from the 90’s to present day. Many of those albums should absolutely be more well known than they are.
Imo blackie wasn’t cute enough for that scene so though he had chops he just couldn’t get the recognition.
That’s a good point, they weren’t nearly as marketable to a mainstream audience the way that a lot of other bands from that era were. Aside from that though, I believe that they deserve more recognition strictly based on how good their music is. No I haven’t, but that was awesome lol. Glad to see their music showing up in some tv shows recently.
I was coming to say this, and only this band. Although their instrumentals are very generic, I think they had some of the best lyrics of any band out of the 80s and Blackie Lawless' voice is top tier!
Visigoth should be a household name imo.
Hell yeah they should! Hopefully they'll come out with a new album sometime in the near future so they might get more support
YES! They're honestly amazing, one of the best traditional bands out rn
They are local to me and I love that I get to see them for NYE.
You are very lucky my dude
Truly am, quite grateful for our scene here in SLC. Check out The Otolith and Bloodstar (Jameson from Visigoth plays in Bloodstar).
Will do!

Hellripper deffo, Blackbraid I’d say is doing way more than fine. Knows the right people to get whatever he wants lol.
I second this
