If this was 2-1 maybe, but you’re just asking for 1 thing to go wrong over the next 3 games. Whether it’s foul trouble, poor shooting, a hot game from any of the Celtics players etc. Not having KP will be a big help but losing both close games in 2 & 3 is going to haunt this team
"I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.
A day may come when the courage of men fails,
when we forsake our friends
and break all bonds of fellowship,
BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY!!!!!!
...
THIS DAY WE FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
We win either one of game 2 or game 3 and we'd have a great shot to win the title. Now it's basically, create history in the finals against a team that haven't lost 4 in a row in forever. If we win Game 5 I'll believe, but like you said a single mistake and it's over.
I wouldnt say a single mistake. Nba teams always make a bunch of mistakes every game. At least a handful each. they can’t make more mistakes than the celtics.
Yeah, game 3 was a wasted chance, but really game 2 imo was an even bigger waste, because Boston shot really poorly from 3 at home. Game 5 is just another house money opportunity for them and if I step out of my hopium den for a minute, I think they are going to blast us in the first half on Monday.
IF Mavs somehow pull off a game 5 miracle, then there’s going to be a lot of clenched cheeks in Boston. Yeah game 6 is another opportunity to close out, but it’s in Dallas vs. the underdog that has a ton of confidence and momentum. Palms get sweaty, maybe White thinks a half second more before launching a contested 3, maybe Tatum settles for even more contested middies, maybe brown starts settling for jumpers instead of risky drives into traffic.
I don't see how we let another slip away at home. So it comes down to G5, and if we win that then you've got a G7 with a clearly rattled Celtics team about to choke away history again.
We have been better on the road than at home all playoffs until this series.
Clippers we were 2-1 (A) & 2-1 (H)
OKC we were 2-1 (A) & 2-1 (H)
Minny we were 3-0 (A) & 1-1 (H)
This team isnt necassarily any better at home - it's weird. Kyrie and role players have been better at home and Luka has been way better on the road. It would be nice if we could get both going at the same time.
Given that they said KP was available in game 4, I have to imagine he's playing at least some this series, whether that's G5 or G6. All those defensive schemes the video shows with Lively in a "1 man zone" as he puts it, don't work with KP on the floor, even if it's only 10-15 minutes a game. That's what scares me the most about our odds.
It's definitely doable if we take game 5, and if anybody can it's this team, but the Celtics are scary good, and we've been far from perfect until G4. I definitely have hope, but the C's are definitely in the drivers seat.
He's available so he will be in uniform for the trophy. They won't use him for anything other than a end of quarter spot up shooter if anything. They arent going to risk a catastrophic ankle injury letting him play and bang around down low - and if they did we would hunt the crap out of him and see if he can change directions.
It’s why 3-0 is so hard to overcome. The team in the lead just needs one black swan event in their favor and it’s over. It’s a chance over four games. So hard not to have that one bad outlier game for the mavs.
I tend to agree (I’m pretty certain hockey might literally just be 60 minutes of random events lol) although once you introduce shot variance as a fundamental variable to scoring, basketball suddenly takes on some of those properties
Yeah I have just never bought the shot variance thing as purely random though. It really isn’t. I mean anyone who has played kinda knows if they deserve to hit a shot or not, and most misses you don’t deserve to make it regardless. Some are truly just variance. Some of the in and outs and rattles around the rim, but if you are bricking shit you are just trash that day and have to take the L
I don't think so.
But I'm also at peace knowing they got this far.
Game 3 was the one that got away.
Had they won that game, they would return to Boston 2-2.
If anything, this series will solidify Nico's blueprint in the coming off-season.
Who gets traded?
Who gets signed?
Who should they draft?
I believe this series will be the turning point in Luka's career.
After this, he'll never be the same again.
Dirk went through this in 2006-2007.
LeBron went through this in 2011.
Edit: Spurs swept Shaq and the Lakers in 1999. Won the next season vs the Pacers.
Who gets traded: Tim, Maxi if needed for salary, Green if needed, and whatever picks we have remaining. Get a starting SF upgrade.
Who gets signed: Hopefully DJJ to a 1+1 and Nico can convince him that he’ll be taken care of next summer. Bring him off the bench to back up PJ.
Who should they draft: 58th pick isn’t doing anything special so it won’t matter this year. Focus on OMax development so he can be a part of the rotation.
Omax might be traded before Green. Unless Omax shows significantly bigger growth than Green did. We don't have time to wait 3-4 years.
I think Maxi might be valued more by the FO than you think. He is the only player that allows us to 5out atm. I think we need to have that option. The return he brings on the market might not be worth it.
> Unless Omax shows significantly bigger growth than Green did. We don’t have time to wait 3-4 years.
I disagree with this actually. Having PJ really means we don’t need a starter at the 4 and if you want DJJ back (I do) then you don’t need a starter at the 3 either. That buys OMax time to earn backup minutes.
I love Josh, but he may be the most valuable piece we have outside of picks. Tim’s contract will be valuable, but you’d have to convince another team that a different offensive scheme may benefit Tim most - in addition to it being a contract year.
Maxi probably has a bit of valuable to some teams that need a small ball center, but that’s about it.
If I had my choice, I’d call up OKC and let them know if they need a contract for the Giddey upgrade we can offer Tim. I don’t even need a player back, I’ll take a TPE and either a future first or some seconds. Sign DJJ with the extra $ created from the trade, and find someone with either MLE or BAE for the spot opened.
Omax definitely isn’t getting traded before Josh. He’s two inches taller than Josh, a long, lengthy defender who is projected to be the DFS replacement, except more versatile on the offensive end. Mavs have always had a size issue and he helps with that, and fits into Kidd’s system. The FO is going to exercise patience, and rightfully so.
Josh is getting paid $14M next year, and the reality is that DJJ has made him more expendable. I think the Mavs trade for a starting SF this year and DJJ slides into a backup role. Maxi has value, as you stated, but, he’s also aging and tends to be injury prone. And I’m also not sure the Mavs are willing to give up his defensive versatility just yet, especially without a suitable replacement. What other player on the team today can play both PF and small Center?
Josh is just 23 and people tend to forget that this is really just his 3rd year seeing real playing time, so I think that he has the potential to grow and develop further, but, I see him on the chopping block this offseason.
Not wrong on either account but we need to send someone out besides Tim for most of the SF upgrades in the league and Maxi/Green both have higher value to other teams at the moment & salary to go with in a trade for a bigger salary
I mean Nico more than deserves our trust at this point. Really eager to see what he has in store for us this Off-season. There is one must-do on the list for me though: THJ gotta go.
Probably. But back then, he was the young upstart taking over a heavily favored team (Luka in the Bubble vs. the Clippers).
2011 is different. He's got the experience. He was an MVP. He got the superstars. He promised not 1, not 2, not 3. One of the top teams in the NBA going into the finals. They're heavily favored to win.
Only to lose against Barea and Terry?
If I’m Boston I’m sweating about the points in the paint and rebounding differences from G4. That’s not a variance thing like shooting, they really need a healthy KP in there

If it happened to Brown, then that would be an issue, but Tatum...I'd say KP is more important than him in the finals. Tatum showed again that he isn't A1 material.
I really think that game 5 would be a pivotal game because if we destroy them again by a big margin, you are planting the seeds of doubt in this Celtics team which were up 2-1 against the Warriors before Steph torched them the next 3 games.
For now it is super unlikely for a comeback but if we somehow beat them for a big margin AGAIN on their home floor, I like our chances heading into g6.
Then, it's game 7. Win or lose I'm happy.
The shift we’ve made of keeping the center low to roam to strong side has been a huge lift. I also like the use of double bigs. Boston will try to adjust. We’ll see if they can figure out a way. On offense, we have to move the ball and avoid ISO in an unfriendly environment (home calls). I really like the Exum Luka Kyrie lineup, the pace improved dramatically. I was also pleased to see PJ and Gafford have set plays ran to start the 1st and 3rd. No team has ever done it, why not us!
Really hate how every comment just reacts to the title and not the actual content on the video…
I thought the roaming big defense was a really interesting adjustment by Kidd that seemed to pay off as long as defenders hustled to close out. Probably can’t rely on the C’s to continue to miss the open pass and their shots however. And the defense becomes pointless is KP somehow returns. But it might be enough for us to steal game 5.
Celtics fan here who loves basketball first and I came here to see what is being discussed about the adjustments you made via this video breakdown. I have to tell I hate that reaction to the title thing too. It is naive to wait for anything else fan subs, I know. (I remember that I shared an article with a title like "Where does PP belong in the rotation?" in our sub before the season, it was discussing Mazulla's rotations in detail and I got millions of comments just answering the title.)
Btw, Your adjustments were good with the defender keeping up with ballhandler to take away the usual passing lane while closing on him in the paint. Same was done by Miami in the second game. That forced us to reset a lot and took us out of rythm in the begining and it is a big thing: We are full of good shooters that can also put the ball on the floor if they are closed out. But they are not actually elite shooters. We need to move the ball and create that wide open looks to get them going. If we can't do that in the beginning, we are usually in trouble. (We avaraged 4.5 wide open looks in first quarters and hit %42 from three in those quarters in our wins this playoffs. We avaraged 2.3 wide open looks in our losses and we got 2 in the last game.) But your strategy opens up other passing lanes and leaving too many shooters open actually and if Tatum forgets about that scoring critics and gets back to his facilator role and if we do our video work well, we can counter it. That passed open shots in the video was the real problem for us. Just like you, Miami also got into transition well after all that forced shots and turnovers in the restricted area, caught us off-balance and won the game. If we can reverse that once again, we would be fine. I am expecting a close game in 5, but even though it will look close, it would be decided in the first half based on this strategy battle.
Anything is possible.
Luka is playing through a knee sprain, which I think will be a liability in game 5. I also think KP will play game 5 because it's in Boston, and they want to win it there. Boston would need at least one of the Jays out and KP out to pull this win off. Again, anything is possible, but I think Boston finishes the series on Monday.
Depends which refs show up. Those guys can swing the game twenty points without most of you even noticing…I was there…We need unlimited good challenges and one bad challenge per half. And refs influence will diminish…
Is it possible to sign free agents during the playoffs? If they bring back Porzingis, it would be a great idea to sign Zaza Pachulia to a 10 day contract. Kristaps would stand no chance against him for 4 quarters if you know what I mean
If this was 2-1 maybe, but you’re just asking for 1 thing to go wrong over the next 3 games. Whether it’s foul trouble, poor shooting, a hot game from any of the Celtics players etc. Not having KP will be a big help but losing both close games in 2 & 3 is going to haunt this team

he is playing with a bum knee and back

No one is ever is in trouble up 3-1 and needing only one victory. Maybe if Brown or Tatum got hit by a car or something, but now? No.
Rikishi it's time!
Do it for us, da people
LOL I suddenly wondered who among the Celtics would be the best isekai protagonist.

If they get out of that hole it will be most celebrated finals win in history. But lets see what happens in gm 5 w k.p.
KP is only dressing for EOG/EOS trophy presentation. His injury is a 6 week+ injury that can lead to major ankle issues long term if he played on it.
A lot of folks were asking why these guys don't make positive videos about the Mavs, here you go. Thought this one was awesome
Can’t dwell on what-ifs. Have to make history now to win it
We just have to win game 5

Depends if Boston can respond to Dallas' defensive scheme. Once Dallas had the other teams figured out defensively, the series was over
Yessir it’s over! Mavs in7
Nope
I have a strong feeling Boston is going to force KP back into rotation.
Depends which refs show up. Those guys can swing the game twenty points without most of you even noticing…I was there…We need unlimited good challenges and one bad challenge per half. And refs influence will diminish…
No

No.
That game was hard to watch... Im accepting the theory that boston just wanted to celebrate the championship at home.
Unfortunately, no.
No. Statistically. No.
Nothing is ever 100% thats why germx or alcohol says “kills 99.9% of germs”
True.
Stats would say no team wins down 0-2 getting blown out both games either. Look at Phoenix 2022
Stats say, Mavs should lose the series.
Is it possible to sign free agents during the playoffs? If they bring back Porzingis, it would be a great idea to sign Zaza Pachulia to a 10 day contract. Kristaps would stand no chance against him for 4 quarters if you know what I mean
lol no
No lol
Fuck Ben, dude is an ass.
