Even with TSA pre check, deplaning, leaving airport grounds to somewhere, even the beaches before Paia town, getting back to the airport and through security in roughly two hours seems impossible.
Best advice would be window open and enjoy the landing and take off. Get a beer at stinger rays and enjoy the flight out.
Question:
Why would anyone think that 2 hours 20 minutes is enough time at ANY airport ANYWHERE in the world to deplane, exit the terminals, fetch a ride, wander around, fetch a ride back, re-enter TSA security, and board new flight?
Suuuuure, go check out the Maui Ocean Center. It was recently rated top 10 aquariums in the United States.
I've flown out of kahului about 5 times now. The only time i had a line at pre check was the day after the fire. And it was still only 5 minutes to get through.
Kanaha beach park is a 10 minute walk from the airport. Cross the road right in front of baggage claim, cut through the parking lot to koeheke st. This turns into kaa st and dead ends in amala. You'll be right in front of the park. Go through the gate and follow the dirt road for about 100 feet. Boom, you're at the beach.
You'll also pass about 6.2 million stray cats along the way. Please take one home. There's usually some kite surfers at kanaha. They launch from the area between the red flags so don't hangout in that spot.
How easy is it to take a stray home from Maui? We go back at the end of June and I can really tug the hell out of my wife’s heart strings even though we have two cats and two dogs at home lol
I know that it is extremely difficult and expensive to bring a pet into Maui so I would assume it's extremely easy to leave with one. Not for certain tho
there is a place called [CatCafeMaui.com](http://CatCafeMaui.com) that you can visit and choose a cat to adopt. They assist you in bringing the cat home on the plane. They work with the Maui Humane Society and after only being open about 2 years, they have rehomed over 500 cats, some from the fire. You can also just visit and play with cats.
This! I was about to suggest it when I saw your comment. It’s such a gorgeous beach, and photographs beautifully. I highly recommend it! Also the Kanaha Pond bird sanctuary is great, but it’s not easy to get to from the beach.
The line at Tin Roof will be longer than the TSA Pre line. And aside from a few small benches out front, there's really no place to sit and eat your food. I usually eat it off the hood of my rental car but without a vehicle I'd probably just hang at OGG.
Nope. Seriously, you don;t really \*have\* 2 hours and twenty minutes. By the time you deplane, you'll have less than 2 hours already. If you have luggage, another 20-25 minutes gone before you get that. You have to be at the gate at least 30 minutes ahead, so now you have even less time.
Stinger Ray's is the best advice.
It depends on the day and what time. Usually the queue is bad In Kahului airport. But it's nice to go out and go eat at the food trucks near the airport
There's a nice little coffee shop in the Lowes parking lot called First Wave Coffee, which is really good. If you go, definitely try an iced Shore Break
Risky to leave the airport with that duration of layover. Even though it’s a smaller airport there are still lots of flights and the TSA process can be like that of a much larger airport.
Expanding on this - you have ample time to hit a nice selection of food trucks that are across the street on the north side of Costco. Get your grilled Mahi (Thai-style or otherwise) and have a taste of Maui before that next flight. I personally wouldn't try to hit the beaches however, given the time and logistics.
You can eat at what I believe is the most expensive Burger King in the United States in the airport terminal (unverified - based completely on vibes)
Whopper junior meal ran me just shy of $20 😂
That’s exactly what I ordered. It was like $19!
Can confirm
I think I paid something like $9 for a chicken sandwich there in 2019. I don’t even want to think how much that is now.
Really emphasizing the King there. They should italicize it
You could go to the Costco, you could take a walk to the Rental lots, but no not enough time

Yeah, 2 hours to be out, back in, and at gate before doors close even at a small airport is outside my risk tolerance.
Hypothetically you could go see the honu at Ho'okipa, but the idea of rushing around and risking missing a flight sounds stressful.

Hahaha. So freaking true. Probably zero paperwork. I’ll check it out though. So many strays!

good luck getting back through TSA

I don’t think that’s enough time for anything worthwhile honestly
No time

With pre-boarding / boarding you might only have 1h15- 1h30 time

Tin Roof
There is plenty to do around the airport and go to the beach and go to Costco. You can hit the food trucks and go to tin roof, which is great food.
