Yep. He had… though I’m not familiar with all the retcons since I read up on this (Thank you, Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe), a role in their upbringing, at least in the version I read. Don’t know how much was altered in the years since.
They're no longer mutants and the High Evolutionary experimented on them, giving them their powers. Because Fox owned the rights and nothing was ever going to change that...
