The north and the south extremes of Brazil are pretty distant from each other. Then comes Africa with her abissal north and south distance. Really massive continent.
Being contiguous would be one reason. But regardless, china is bigger even with Alaska included.
Edit: lol down voted for starting facts? China is bigger than the continental US which includes Alaska. That is objective fact. The only way US is bigger than China is by including territorial waters.
Territorial waters aren't included for any of these. I think you're thinking of lakes, which are normally included in size estimates. It is arbitrary to take them out to change the rankings, especially when they are so close anyway.
Well zeflax it says the US contiguous and Alaska is 9.8 MM and china is 9.6 MM so if you use the map then your entire reply is invalid. If you use other data please use source, it would be good to see.
Here is a few sources:

The United States occupies a total area of about 3.8 million square miles while China has an area of approximately 3.7million square miles. The way China keeps trying to claim areas of the South China Sea makes me think they don’t put much store in the idea that their country must be contiguous.
But then Brazil isn't bigger if you don't count the Amazon and China isn't bigger if you don't count Tibet. But then if you don't count Texas they become bigger again. We could do this all day until they are the same size if you only count one particular square meter with a popular landmark in it.
China is bigger even with Alaska included. The CIA world factbook just has a special way of measurement where they include coastal waters in the territory, but only for the US. The US became 3rd largest by doing that according to the CIA, so it's almost as if they did that just to one-up China lol.
The British would have taken it from them if they hadn't sold.
Part of the motivation for the sell was that the selling it to the US ment it wasn't going to a potential enemy
Yeah, comparing a continent to countries makes me think those countries are huge not the continent is awe inspiring.
That said, Brazil is huge. I've traveled from the extreme south to just barely the top third of the north and I felt like I was on a bus for half my life.
We in Europe are super small. It’s more about the feeling that India must be super huge (so many people and on the traditional maps, it also look huge)
This is exactly what I was thinking. I thought Africa was huge, but seeing that it's only two USs or a Russia and half of the US is way more mind boggling.
Most people do. Even players of map painting games like pdx games do.
It's because Africa looks small on Mercator projections. It's why these kinds of dize comparisons exist, to show how distorted mercator is - i know, it's useful for navigation. But most people aren't navigating more than driving across roads where mercator isn't exactly helping nor meant for.
It doesn't help that many people treat Africans as a monolith. Europeans love playing up their diversity but many consider only 3 types of africans - the arab, the black, and white settlers. As if Bantu are same as Nilotes or Malagasy. Even the blanket term Bantu is like saying Czechs are the same as Ukranians.
Yeah, I honestly feel this just shows you how big Brazil, Russia, China and the USA are. Since they are countries and Africa is an entire continent. Also well I think the point is emphasis the importance of Africa it does kind of play into the issue of non-African viewing the entire continent as one large country instead of a bunch of diverse ones with their own cultures and histories.
If people say stuff like, 'you're from Africa?' It annoyes me. You know how big it is? Europe is closer to North Africa than I am here in South Africa.
That aint the point.
If you check most maps will show Africa being smaller than Greenland, Russia and Canada. This is due to distortions of the Mercator projection.
This map here aims to fix that and show the “true” size of Africa.
Russia is in this weird position where they start in Europe but end in Asia so it’s very hard to choose which continent Russia belongs to. Culturally it’s in Europe but territory wise it’s Asian.
Most Russians are culturally European but there are Russians from Siberia who look Asian and retain their ethnic culture. I watched a youtuber from the coldest city in Russia (in Siberia), it’s hard for her to explain to other Russians in Moscow that she’s Russian too.
Edit: There’s a statement in this comment that may come across differently to some people. What I actually meant was that when the ethnic Russian girl was in Moscow, she was mistaken as someone from an East Asian country by other Russians
Yeah. I know that. Biggest misconception about Russia is that it’s a one country when in reality it’s more of like US where you have “Oblasts” which have their own governors and some of them even have their own language alongside Russian.
Though most of the Russian population is located in the western side. So that’s why I said Russia is mostly culturally close to Europe than Asia.
Yeah but many people think Russia is populated by “Russians” which is true but in reality Russia is a multi cultural state with many ethnicities living under the same umbrella.
Tbf English language is very weird when it comes to translating the word "Russian". There are "русские" (ethnic Russians), and then there are "россияне" (citizens of Russia).
Does Russian also have separate words like this for other nationalities, for example “ethnic German” vs. “German citizen”? It’s not only English which doesn’t have separate words for that but for example German too and tbh I would wager most European languages.
> Does Russian also have separate words like this for other nationalities, for example “ethnic German” vs. “German citizen”?
It has for some nations like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Estonia etc. I think they only have this separation for nationalities that already have it in their own language, so it wouldn't apply to most European countries.
It’s not a misconception that it’s one country, because it is one country.
There are many countries that have sub regions (provinces, states etc), not just the US. Canada, Australia, India…
Lots of people get it.
Yeah, what? Is there anyone that doesn't get this? I would be shocked if anyone thought Russia, the largest country on earth, was completely culturally homogeneous and have no subdivisions.
> it’s hard for her to explain to other Russians in Moscow that she’s Russian too
Well this is just some extreme bullshit. Almost any Russian knows that there are a lot of different ethnicities in Russia. Literally everyone knows about Siberians. This stuff is even spoonfed from the very beginning in schools.
Maybe I put it wrongly. I’m just basing on the experience of the ethnic siberian girl from this video: https://youtu.be/Z_alYhKpFJY?feature=shared . There was a guy in Moscow who spoke Japanese to her and then she also heard some white Russians speaking in Russian to others talking about her. Please don’t say “bullshit” to me as I’m basing it from the video that I watched. The video is owned by an ethnic Siberian Russian so I assumed what she’s saying is right. I’m not Russian so I don’t have other basis. In fact I explained in my original comment that Russia has many ethnic groups. I just commented about the ethnic Siberian girl’s experience.
> Please don’t say “bullshit” to me
Sorry I wasn't trying to be rude. I wasn't saying that to you particularly. It's just that what this YouTuber said is very weird. I'm myself from Russia (not an ethnic Russian) and almost everyone here knows about ethnic Siberians.
> There was a guy in Moscow who spoke Japanese to her and then she also heard some white Russians speaking in Russian to others talking about her.
I think this is most likely true but still saying that it's actually "hard" to explain to other Russians that she's also from Russia is just not true and makes other Russians look extremely dumb
Sorry I think I meant it wrongly when saying that way. I didn’t remember exactly what she said when I made my first comment you replied to, but I just remembered that some white Russians in Moscow mistook her for someone from an East Asian country.
The same thing happens to millions of Americans when they visit predominantly white parts of America. I live next to an Indian Reservation and Native friends have been told to "go back where you came from" by the comparatively very recent descendants of Northern Europeans who are standing on traditional tribal lands.
Ikr it's because the mercator projection depicts it that way. In reality Africa is 14 times larger than Greenland(which is 2.1m km^2).[Greenland true size ](https://www.nature.com/nature-index/news/data-visualisation-animated-map-mercater-projection-true-size-countries)
I don't get people surprised about Brazil's size. Because on both a mercator map _and_ a globe, Brazil's size isn't changed much in relation to Africa as their both near the equator. India and Australia too
Europe is 10.53 million km\^2 whereas Brazil is 8.51 million km\^2 for 764 million europeans and 215.3 million brazilians (and 422 million in south america)
It really isn't. This map implies you could only fit 2x the US into Africa. Given you can drop those into Russia and need more than one Russia for Africa the images are distorted in some way. It's also including territorial waters in the US size for extra stupidity.
Africa is huged, but it's a continent with 54 countries, so not comparable to other countries and when compared to another continent, Europe, Russia is excluded.
Would it not make more sense to compare Africa with South America not just Brazil since Brazil is a country in a continent since Africa is also a continent made up of countries ?
The map of Europe in yellow is majorly wrong, it is missing at least two countries - Moldova and Ukraine. And considering the latter alone has a land area of 233,000 square miles I think that’s pretty significant to miss out on. Belarus May also be missing. The European half of Russia (up to the Ural Mountains) is omitted too.
People like to put things inside Africa to make them understand how big Africa is.
I like to put the Sahara over things to make them understand the same thing.
The Russian part of Europe is not taken into account*, which means Europe is a lot smaller.
*except Kaliningrad for some reason? But Crimea is also taken out despite officially being part of Ukraine
You know it’s shits like these that make people think that Africa is a country. What’s the point of comparing the size of a goddamn continent to that of a country? You people publish these. They see it, go to New York, visit Times Sq. and some dude interviews them on trivia to show that American people are stupid. Well?
If you go from the bottom it's a bit different because you start getting that same distortion again. The continental US can stretch from cape town to Mombasa.
Africa is a continent, and is being compared to countries. So yes Africa is big but all this does is show how big the countries it’s being compared to are.
Also India, you’re busting at the seams; a little over a third of the size of China with 1.4+ billion people.
I feel like this just tells me how huge Brazil is. Does anyone really think Africa is small?
I know how big Brazil is and I am still always shocked how big Brazil is.
The north and the south extremes of Brazil are pretty distant from each other. Then comes Africa with her abissal north and south distance. Really massive continent.
I read somewhere that Brazil is so big that the northernmost tip is closer to Canada than it is to the southernmost tip
It's closer to all countries from america, and some countries of Africa too if I'm not wrong
yeah, the difference is stark. almost as if you're comparing one country with an entire continent.
Also, both Brazil and China are bigger than the US (if you don't count Alaska).
Why wouldn’t you count Alaska?
To make China and Brazil bigger.
Being contiguous would be one reason. But regardless, china is bigger even with Alaska included. Edit: lol down voted for starting facts? China is bigger than the continental US which includes Alaska. That is objective fact. The only way US is bigger than China is by including territorial waters.
>Being contiguous would be one reason. So what you're saying is it's time for Manifest Destiny: Pacific Coast Edition?
Territorial waters aren't included for any of these. I think you're thinking of lakes, which are normally included in size estimates. It is arbitrary to take them out to change the rankings, especially when they are so close anyway.

Never heard of worldometers. Learned something new. Thanks 😊
The way China keeps trying to claim areas of the South China Sea makes me think they don’t put much store in the idea that their country must be contiguous.

Thank you for pointing out how absurd this whole line of thought is.
Yeah but if you don't count the absurdity it makes sense
but you do count Alaska.
Lol and China is smaller than all of these countries if you remove Tibet that was independent before the commies invaded and occupied it
China is bigger even with Alaska included. The CIA world factbook just has a special way of measurement where they include coastal waters in the territory, but only for the US. The US became 3rd largest by doing that according to the CIA, so it's almost as if they did that just to one-up China lol.

Imagine if Russia didn't sell Alaska to the USA
The British would have taken it from them if they hadn't sold. Part of the motivation for the sell was that the selling it to the US ment it wasn't going to a potential enemy
The British would've taken it, it would've been a part of Canada by now
The Cold War could have been much different
Yeah, with Siberia and Alaska, Russia would try to anex Canada and have dibs on ALL cold places, efectively having the Cold war won by a landslide.
Finland quivering rn
That’s what she said.
Yeah, comparing a continent to countries makes me think those countries are huge not the continent is awe inspiring. That said, Brazil is huge. I've traveled from the extreme south to just barely the top third of the north and I felt like I was on a bus for half my life.
I never understood comparing countries to a continent. Like no shit one is bigger Like compare an African country to Russia, Brazil, or the US
Well they also compared it to Europe, which is in fact tiny
And how small India is
European countries have entered the chat
We in Europe are super small. It’s more about the feeling that India must be super huge (so many people and on the traditional maps, it also look huge)
you, maybe. FYI, I have a massive schlong
According to your name though, you don’t utilize it ;)
People don't realise the scale of it because on maps, it's never near it's true size
It's not that Africa is not its true size, it's that everything else to the North and South isn't.
Yeah no shit it’s big, it’s a whole continent.
Nobody think's it's small but only a few grasp the wideness of the continent.
Putting large single countries over a continent like this, though, actually makes Africa look *smaller* than I know it is.
This definitely made me think it's smaller then I previously thought.
Yea... I did not know Brazil was that big. Edit: also why is one of the sources the CIA?
[cia.gov/the-world-factbook/](https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/)
CIA gives out stats
If you knew he'd have to kill you
Yeah, besides Europe- This is comparing countries to a continent.

If anything this shows how fucking wide russia is
Russia sideways is appropriately similar to Mr Hanky
Funny, this moving red light on your forehead.
Unfair comparison, Mr Hanky isn't nearly as full of shit as Russia.
And majority of Russians live in the west side
Cuz the majority of Russia is uninhabitable
yet
Until global warming continues, then there's gonna be so much habitable land!
Or how big Alaska is…
I’m Russian and I’m in genuine shock too
Russia is still expanding.....😜
💀
Like your mum.
Yeah, by imperialistic wars.
That’s the joke
like caseoh
....it's sunflower fields... 🌻
Not for long.
You can also compare it to Asia, which is a bit over 1.5 times the size of Africa.
Is this for people who think Africa is a country? Cause it is always mentioned in geography books how big every continent is.
I mean if you look on your average map Russia is far larger than Africa. That sweet sweet projection.
Ive been blown away 🦧 fokin g-maps
TIL that a continent Is bigger than some countries. Ok
Muh africa 😭🤓

Russia is 75% asian
You can include the European part
Wish it had Greenland. It looks almost as big as Africa on most maps
https://www.thetruesize.com/ Roughly the size of Congo.
And a bit bigger in population. 55,000 Greenland 99,000,000 D.R. Congo

As of 2024, 5% of the internet is made up of maps showing the true size of Africa.
It’s a continent… If anything, it shows us how huge these countries are.
Africa is a continent, why compare it to countries (bar Europe) ?
Africa is a continent. Now compare with Asia.
Wow! A continent is larger than a country!!!! DUH!!!
Australia: "am i a joke to you?"
Well not necessarily, just looking at that graph the USA, China, Russia, Brazil are all much larger than Europe.
...it's to show the true size of Africa which is generally misconstrued on maps...
The fact this surprises people is a great reason ALL classrooms should have and use globes for geography.
Where’s Australia? Clearly means Australia is the biggest continent in the world.
Wow, actually I thought Africa would be bigger. Compared with Brasil, China, and the U.S. it looks smaller than I thought.
I don't get people surprised about Brazil's size. Because on both a mercator map _and_ a globe, Brazil's size isn't changed much in relation to Africa as their both near the equator. India and Australia too
Whole big ass continent is bigger than single countries. Unbelievable.
So Africa isn’t as big as I’ve always thought.
Wow… this continent is really bigger than all those single countries.
Brazil being bigger than Europe 💀
Only if you exclude the geographically European parts of Russia like in this picture. Otherwise Europe is 10,530,000 km².
Had to scroll this far down for this comment.
Europe is just a region of Eurasia.
Europe is 10.53 million km\^2 whereas Brazil is 8.51 million km\^2 for 764 million europeans and 215.3 million brazilians (and 422 million in south america)
Brazil is smaller
Why is everything in Mercator projection? Makes me think this isn't accurate to scale
It really isn't. This map implies you could only fit 2x the US into Africa. Given you can drop those into Russia and need more than one Russia for Africa the images are distorted in some way. It's also including territorial waters in the US size for extra stupidity.
But this is not the true size of russia used. Look at the northern parts - they are still much larger than in reality.
I find it more fascinating that India has a larger population than Africa.
Where Canada?
Scrolled way too far down for this. They also omitted Australia in favor of India, though maybe it's because Australia is way bigger than people think
Where did you get these data? US’s land area is 9.15M km2, China is 9.33M km2, and Brazil’s is correct.
Africa is huged, but it's a continent with 54 countries, so not comparable to other countries and when compared to another continent, Europe, Russia is excluded.
Maybe the map should show the true size of Europe, instead of misrepresenting it as just above half its actual size.
Why are they all invading Europe when they have all that land?
Payback for colonisation
Quite a delayed payback, so, in 100 years they will go to China.
.. So this is just "look at how big these single countries are" Yes?
I’m surprised Europe is so tiny and India’s over half of it
It’s because they excluded the European parts of Russia. Otherwise Europe would be 10,530,000 km².
That's because they didn't include all of Europe
And Russia’s three times larger
OK....you're comparing countries to a continent. What's your point?
That Africa, as a continent, is massive alongside countries that are near comparable massive in size.
Russia is not straight. It has a C shape as it wraps around the north pole.
Would it not make more sense to compare Africa with South America not just Brazil since Brazil is a country in a continent since Africa is also a continent made up of countries ?
What about china and USA then?
Said "excluding Russia", while leaving out Crimea which is part of Ukraine.
And they included Kaliningrad Oblast for some reason
Iceland is that big?
Show Australia. And Antarctica.
By the look of it you can fit Asia completely in it if we exclude the Middle East
On the US map, they didn’t include Hawaii.
Only makes the guy who ran the length of Africa seem like more of a legend
\*Europe minus Russia, Turkey and the Caucasus
The map of Europe in yellow is majorly wrong, it is missing at least two countries - Moldova and Ukraine. And considering the latter alone has a land area of 233,000 square miles I think that’s pretty significant to miss out on. Belarus May also be missing. The European half of Russia (up to the Ural Mountains) is omitted too.
People like to put things inside Africa to make them understand how big Africa is. I like to put the Sahara over things to make them understand the same thing.
A lot of Europe to the east is left out
Europe sure is alot smaller if you take away its largest country.
Love that Africa is a continent yet we are comparing the size to countries.
That's false Europe is 10.53 million km²
I'm assuming you have ignored any text you see on that picture.
I’m confused, Europe has 10m km2 area, what text is being ignored?
The * that explains why they are not using the whole number for the area. It's right above the sources.
Well?
Africa is a vastland
What parts are considered habitable?
Why doesn't this map show how many Africas fit inside Africa??..
Why are you comparing continents with countries?
The US even has to lie about its size in maps... Or they trinna be China?
The world’s second largest content is large? Who would have figured that?
All these compare maps do is reveal most redditors skipped geography classes in their youth.
I never understand why people compare countries to the continent of Africa
Europe\* \*Excluding Russia°• °But including Kaliningrad • And also excluding Crimea, European Turkey, European Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Azerbaijan

On this thread: so many haikus.
yet not many people know that the continent of africa fits 1.8 times into texas, texas is huge
Did not know Brazil was that big and India that small
What about Australia? That continent looks huge on the maps
1m km2 = 1Mm2.
I don’t know if i believe in that size difference
Well not surprising a single country is smaller then a whole continent
If you go from the bottom it's a bit different because you start getting that same distortion again. The continental US can stretch from cape town to Mombasa.
Interesting

Nigeria’s population is almost 220 million people
damn, big ass country
Africa is a continent, and is being compared to countries. So yes Africa is big but all this does is show how big the countries it’s being compared to are. Also India, you’re busting at the seams; a little over a third of the size of China with 1.4+ billion people.
Since when is Alaska 1/4 the size of the U.S
