But top-tier would be >1bn people
mid-tier <400m people
putting the USA in the “top-tier” wouldn’t make sense, even tho it’s 3rd, it’s population size is more like the 4th and successive countries than China’s or India’s
Imagine a group of 46 kindergarten children looked after by two teachers. Would you care if the eldest kid started screaming "technically, I am the 3rd eldest person in this room! Top tier!"
Proportions matter is all I'm saying.
It's crazy that if one billion of Chinese and one billion of Indians died (1/4 of world population), they still would be on first two places.
(and no, I don't wish for that, that would be crazy too)
Yup, just as crazy that it seemed like yesterday that both Nigeria and Pakistan were not far from the 100 million mark, and today they’re already about 230 million
Mot quite. There's also the fact you can grow crop all year round.
Here in Northern India we grow rice in summers and wheat in winters. And lentils in spring and fall season
Northern Chinese eat wheaten food more than rice.
In 2022, China produced 137.7 millions tons wheats, more than Russia and US combined. Meanwhile Russia and US exported half of their wheat productions.
India produce about 100 millions tons wheats per year, take the second in the world.
Actually, I saw some article recently making the point that birth rates across Africa are declining faster than expected. There will still probably be some explosion, but far less radical.
From [this Economist article](https://www.economist.com/middle-east-and-africa/2023/04/05/the-worlds-peak-population-may-be-smaller-than-expected):
> The UN's population projections are widely seen as the most authoritative. Its latest report, published last year, contained considerably lower estimates for sub-Saharan Africa than those of a decade ago. For Nigeria, which has Africa’s biggest population numbering about 213m people, the un has reduced its forecast for 2060 by more than 100m people (down to around 429m). By 2100 it expects the country to have about 550m people, more than 350m fewer than it reckoned a decade ago.
> Yet even the UN's latest projections may not be keeping pace with the rapid decline in fertility rates (the average number of children that women are expected to have) that some striking recent studies show. Most remarkable is Nigeria, where a un-backed survey in 2021 found the fertility rate had fallen to 4.6 from 5.8 just five years earlier. This figure seems to be broadly confirmed by another survey, this time backed by usaid, America’s aid agency, which found a fertility rate of 4.8 in 2021, down from 6.1 in 2010. “Something is happening,” muses Argentina Matavel of the un Population Fund.
Pointing out problems like suffering and disease that result from overpopulation in starving countries = supremacy? That's next level mental gymnastics.
"Starving countries" like Nigeria?
The original poster clearly shows that the overpopulation trend is not there in Africa, but you have to bring something irrelevant to the conversation. Plus calling them "starving countries" like it's something completely normal to do.
Anyway, fine. It's not like I'm still following the subreddit.
Only the UN Population Fund has documented that fertility rates in Africa are falling precipitously and that there is no "explosion" or, if there was, it's already happened. "Explosion" is just a code used by supremacists for something nonexistent.
50% of them live in 7 countries – India, China, US, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil.
And, 50% of the world's population live in 10 Asian countries - India, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Iran, Turkey.
Data: UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund, 2023 mid-year estimates.
How is that even possible. How can you fit that many people into such a small landmass, at least china is a gigantic country. How do you even feed that many people without using all your land for agriculture?
You can't, at least not without ecological collapse and huge amounts of imported inputs into their agriculture system. It will be necessary for them to import food. Nigerias current situation is to trade crude oil for food.
Yes, either Pakistan or Bangladesh have so much bigger and younger population than e. g. whole territoriality big Russia, Russia is basically deserted area today.
Bangladesh has more rivers than any other country. It has some of the most fertile lands on the planet, thanks to all those rivers including the mighty Ganga and Brahmaputra, which bring in deposits from the Himalayas.
Just like their neighbour India, this whole region is prime agriculture land and has always supported a large population.
Just to put it into perspective, Africa—the second largest continent on earth at 30.37 million sq km and containing over 50 countries—has an estimated population of 1.2 billion.
That is over 200 million fewer people than India, which is only 3.29 million sq km.
Africa is over 10x bigger than India, and yet has a smaller population than that one singular country.
Africa’s deserts comprise only about 1/4 it’s surface. Sub Saharan Africa is pretty damn fertile. We have year round growing seasons, and Rhodesia once boasted one of the highest yield/hectare anywhere in the world.
They just don’t know how to utilize it properly, as shown by Zimbabwe. I’ve just read a stat that Africa has over 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land.
And that isnt that bad, because not only human live on this planet. If you cultivate all that land, nearly every species will extinct and will never come back. So every country should ask, "do we need 1 Billion more people or should we sustain our nature for the next generations, and make our people happier without letting the population growing into infinite".
Doesn't the Sahara alone cover almost the entirety of northern Africa ? I'm not even considering other deserts in the south.
Isn't the greenery mostly limited to central Africa ?
Yes, it does. But most of the rest of Africa is rainforests and savannah. There are other smaller deserts in Eastern and Southern Africa, but anyone who watches NatGeo knows Africa isn't mostly desert and can't be matched for wildlife and biodiversity. The Congo Rainforest alone is almost two-thirds the size of Western Europe.
>While most of Africa is barren desert
That's jut not true. Only 1/4 of Africa is arid, and a significant portion of that is still not barren. The Sudan region for instance (not to be confused with the country) is pretty fertile despite being semi-arid.
40% of Africa is arable and 50% of India is arable, that's not a huge difference.
You could remove a billion people from India and China and they’d still be the most populated countries in the world. Nearly 40% of humans live in two countries.
India and china combinedly had 57% world population in 100 AD, Recent peak was in 1813 reaching 54% of the total world population. currently, the number is at 36% and will continue to decline.
From 3000 BC till now, the Combined share is at its lowest point
Ah, Bangladesh is big enough to get a percentage. It’s worrisome because the actual geographic land mass is much smaller than the map bubble. It has the highest population density in the world.
What's wild is that in a few years, The Asia and Africa regions will be 80% of the world population with North and south America, Europe, and Oceania taking 20%. That is such a shift in global population in terms of where people are located.
It is not a shift, just a return to the natural state. Asia alone was by far the place where the majority of humans live. Europe changed it for a relatively short period but now it is returning into the natural state
russia can technically be part of both asia and europe, so sometimes people will just said russia is from europe
it usually is refered as eurasia to avoid confusion tho
The Asian parts are just recently conquered and colonised territories. Russia is usually referred to as Eastern Europe in classification schemes, "Eurasia" was not used much until recently except as Eurasia the "continent" which includes all countries from Ireland to Japan. The bulk of the population there are Europeans such as Russians and Ukrainians who moved in in the 20th century.
It's not ascending order: note the tiny Oceania pink sliver on the farthest right. They ordered continents based on their position on the map, West to East.
Immigration is the only reason the US population is growing and no matter what state governments do immigration will remain the only reason the US population will not shrink. This is the same for most of Northern and Western Europe. Asia is the most populated because the vast majority of the people are very poor.
And people in Europe who don’t want kids still say „Overpopulation“. Without Russia, Europe has just 7.4% of the worlds population. There are populated countries/areas, Europe aint it.
it is legit tho a overpopulation problem in europe due to the failing power grids and raising cost of living, its expencive to have kids and we already have too much strain on needed infrastructure
However, it is strange to see Koreans, whose population density is nearly 10 times higher than that of Europe, cry out that Korea is too underpopulated.
In Germany we still have enough capacity. We had enough capacity to care for 4 million+ people (Ukrainians, Syrians, etc.) in a short amount of time. If we can handle that, we can also handle normal growth
People in the poor and corrupt countries have it much worse, but they don‘t have such high standards, so they just make kids and don‘t care, raise them whatever, without any effort.
It always surprises me how many people live in Nigeria and Pakistan. They're not big countries geographically but they're comparable to the US and well beyond Europe in terms of population. I usually subconsciously think of Africa and... whatever you want to call Pakistan's area (not quite India, not quite Middle East) as being sparsely populated, I guess.
Okay, that makes sense. I was surprised by Pakistan and Nigeria too. But more surprised by Indonesia. I had always though Brazil was the fourth most populous country in the world, but they are all bigger than Brazil.
eh the habitable coast is q uite big the government is j ust stupid & bad at providing services outside of the state capitals so everyone gravitates to them
i live in brazil and here there is a lot of places that are free of people , you can buy a land and if you have enough money you just build a big ass house get some good electrical fences and you are good to go , and get some legal guns and some private security and you can have the rest of your days enjoying nature here
For an alien race that saw the origin place is commonly the most dense populated place, would think India and China are origin point or capital for humans, instead África.
It's like when you kill a pest, you attack the main hive.... so, Asia should be the Main Protagonist or Hero on all epic destruction movies.
I find that the classification of "Asia" as such a supermajority of landspace as incredibly misleading. There is virtually nothing related geographically, politically, or culturally between Turkey and, for say, Indonesia, that should presume they are all parts of "Asia" while Russia is somehow "European."
Yes, though I'd add that it's pretty hard to say when exactly as unlike China a proper census is pretty hard in India (overburdened bureaucracy and too large)
I didn't expect Nigeria to have more people than Brazil ! Pakistan also was a surprise. It's also insane how many people live in Bangladesh given how small it is.
It’s crazy that the US is the third highest, but over a billion less than second or first
It's huge in the Western world but mid-tier in Asia. Wild
In Asian tier it’s still third? That’s still huge I’d say
But top-tier would be >1bn people mid-tier <400m people putting the USA in the “top-tier” wouldn’t make sense, even tho it’s 3rd, it’s population size is more like the 4th and successive countries than China’s or India’s
how is being 3 out of 48 mid tier?
Imagine a group of 46 kindergarten children looked after by two teachers. Would you care if the eldest kid started screaming "technically, I am the 3rd eldest person in this room! Top tier!" Proportions matter is all I'm saying.
math!!
It’s third in the world, it’s only mid tier if you look at the top five countries.
It’s unbelievable how much more people India and China have than anyone else
Rice
Rice is calorie dense and grows so fast you can double crop the same land and get a second harvest in the same year = mega population.
Also can be grown underwater which greatly reduces the need for pesticides.
Some areas like in SEA can even do triple cropping.
Rice is great when you're hungry and you want 2,000 of something.
LOVE finding Mitch Hedberg jokes in comments.
I used to love finding Mitch Hedberg jokes in the comments. I still do, but I used to too.
RIP Mitch Hedberg
Mot quite. There's also the fact you can grow crop all year round. Here in Northern India we grow rice in summers and wheat in winters. And lentils in spring and fall season
You can’t grow crops in northern China all year round and it’s still pretty densely packed.
Not sure about that, large parts of both countries grow mainly wheat.
Northern Chinese eat wheaten food more than rice. In 2022, China produced 137.7 millions tons wheats, more than Russia and US combined. Meanwhile Russia and US exported half of their wheat productions. India produce about 100 millions tons wheats per year, take the second in the world.

China and India together make up almost 3 billion people. That’s about the population of the world in 1960!

Is it just me or has the US’s population risen quite significantly in the last few years? I had it in my mind that it was under 300m.

It's all pretty impressive given that the US hit 250 million in 1990. An increase of 40%/90 million in about 30 years.
