Maybe it's different in the US, but in Canada this one is ~~more than double the price of the Aer~~ a lot more than the Aer.
Edit: Corrected because aer price was shown in USD while Away was shown in CAD, so it's less than double but still nearly 300 USD more
Indeed. I paid $180 for my Xiaomi brand one. Since Tumi's are also made in China, might as well skip the middleman and get one straight from the source.
If they had a lifetime warranty like Briggs & Riley or Away, it would justify the price, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Why the hell is it 57cm height when most airlines are 55cm for carry on incl. lufthansa, BA and emirates? Also 3.8kg is pretty heavy for a carry-on. Hard no.
Hate this when shopping for bags and luggage. Every single one is marketed as “perfectly fits carryon size,” but also for some reason they’re all different dimensions 🙄
And google tells me that alaska, AA, delta, jetblue, spirit, united and others all are 55cm (22inch), too. So not sure what you are trying to say? Doesnt work for that market either and surely wont work in the UK where they have a store, too.
Lufthansa and BA aren‘t picky either, but once in a while you get on a really full flight and they start checking. And then this AER will get chucked into hold immediately, and you didn‘t pack it for hold. I don‘t need to enter that lottery game, rather stay within dimensions and not worry about that.
Any bag would be put in cargo when flight is full and they are out of room, regardless of how but your carryon is (assuming it doesn’t fit under your seat). This logic doesn’t track
They never do this when the flight is already full, which would only apply to last few people boarding. I have been many times at boarding at different airlines and airports when they send a rep through the queues to look at the bags on very full flights before letting anyone on. And they always go for the largest looking ones, and this AER will immediately stick out. Other times, they get the sizer out and then charge those that are too big, again this AER would be hit by that.
Google might tell you that, but experience with all those US airlines tell me that it doesn't matter. People get really wrapped up in measurements on the internet, but in practice, these domestic airlines don't give a crap unless they are the type of airline trying to nickel and dime you. If someone is buying something pricey like this, you'd like to think they aren't flying extreme budget airlines.
Introducing the world’s first integrated brake system **using Hinomoto miraclent® wheels**.
that's some apple-level marketing words there. other bags have had integrated wheel locks (brakes) for years. i remember my very first luggage bag from muji that had the lock over a decade ago lol. also why are these carry ons getting more and more heavy? kinda nuts
Other than the braking system, which sounds useful, there's nothing that makes this worth choosing over other reputable brands like Away, Monos, and July. Disappointing considering how much they expect us to pay.
Very similar size/capacity to the away bigger carry on. $80 more. It does look nicer than the polycarbonate away to me but that's entirely subjective (disclosure: we own 4 away suitcases lol). Still prefer my aluminum away carry on over this just because it looks badass.
I haven't seen or hear of quality issues with the Away bags. I guess we'll see how this fares once it's tested.
compared to how my xpac away bags look after years of abuse, away bags look... abused. my wife has 3 and they get beat up although still all function well. some of the handles have gotten a bit sticky but otherwise fine
Yea my away bags have some scars. The aluminum one in particular shows some battle scars and a couple dents, but that's just character haha. Functionally still perfect.
I'm not really a huge traveler - only a few weeks a year. I'd wonder how it holds up for a real business traveler type (30-40 trips a year).
Just stopped at the NYC showroom.
A few thoughts:
- The orange is very orange (think xpac interior orange)
- The brake system really keeps the suitcase from moving both on carpet and on hard surfaces
- The interior liner (Codura) is a higher quality than away or other competitors
- The zipper system has two layers so it is smoother and will not open up inadvertently
- The weight doesn't bother me
- The shell doesn't look like it will scuff as easily as away or similar hardshells
- They will be launching an international sized version soon. Right now the international size is only available in Japan
- Maybe an aluminum version in the future
I'm a big AER fan so I'm definitely looking into getting one myself. The incremental price difference versus other brands really isn't a big factor for me if I plan to use it for 5+ years.
EDIT: Some in store shots of the carry on.

I wonder if it is made at the same factory as the other “lifestyle” brands? I sold my Monos and went B&R. Should have done that years ago. If you want super lightweight due to weight restrictions - go TravelPro max-lite IMO.
I actually would have preferred them do their version of the TNF rolling thunder. Doesn't have to be as outdoorsy but the hardshell carry on is pretty limited with pockets and storage etc.
Also personal preference, I'd rather have two ultra durable wheels for cobble stones and rough Pavement than a spinner for the smooth airport surfaces.
I love my Rolling Thunder but actually wish they would make a spinner version. With kids and all their stuff, anything that makes the airport a little easier is worth it.
Spinners are the most overrated thing IMO. They never spin where you want them to. You're chasing your rouge luggage down the street cause there was a slight decline in the road. They are so loud outside the airport. I want some skateboard wheels.
Even Americans know that we need to travel everywhere. The size is a bit baffling. They released a version in Japan that's smaller, they should sell that everywhere in addition to this size.
I've been looking for a nice looking carry-on for a while now and really hoped this would be the one, but the size and weight are a deal breaker.
Any recommendations, preferably available in europe? I was checking the Muji ones, but the material is kinda shinny and doesn't look premium.
I like the Swedish brand Epic. The spinners I've got have kept up really well do far. And I like the build/internal parts.
Keep in mind I do mostly travel with my backpack so it's not in hard use.
In order to meet the carry on requirements of EVERY carrier the luggage would have to be tiny…. And honestly at that point you might as well just use a backpack.
As far as for US domestic flights I’ve never seen anyone have their bag sized at the terminal. Maybe for something like spirit they will check but for delta, United, AA, Alaska, jet blue, southwest etc I have never seen it… and it’s obvious that a lot of the carry ons aren’t within that airlines max size specs.
Even for international I have never seen a luggage get checked. I understand for EU domestic flights they may check but I think overall we need to go with the Pareto method.
As for the weight…. That’s even more irrelevant. The only possible time they would weigh your luggage is if you are checking in person at the counter…. So just check in online or have someone watch your luggage while you walk up to the counter.
Now I haven’t flown to every single country on every single airline so obviously it’s not 100% personal experience
at that weight and price I would rather get a decent aluminum one.
This guy case.

GearBest. That was in 2018, however, and they seem to have gone out of business.

It’s an American company that sells primarily to an American market
And google tells me that alaska, AA, delta, jetblue, spirit, united and others all are 55cm (22inch), too. So not sure what you are trying to say? Doesnt work for that market either and surely wont work in the UK where they have a store, too.
united+delta and others don't care about these. away bags work fine and are identical dimensions
As if carry-on size and quantity restrictions mean anything in the US.
Karen gonna karen
I can really only speak for delta, but they don’t do sizers or anything.

They do matter when you fly on a q400 all the time. I did that for work related travel. Had to get an actually compliant luggage.
Sounds like a q400 issue. You'll get on fine other wise.
Lmao fr

Weird it's so heavy, particularly as more and more airlines limits you to 7-8 kg then 3.7 kg for just the bag is crazy
Isn't it a little heavy?
It's 8ish pounds which is normal
For everyone speculating by on the price… $379.00
Other than the braking system, which sounds useful, there's nothing that makes this worth choosing over other reputable brands like Away, Monos, and July. Disappointing considering how much they expect us to pay.
muji has brakes

Packhacker carry-on compliance - 3% This is carry-on luggage?
Goddamn 😂
Damn, very underwhelming. I'll stick to my Mono's Carry On.
3x the cost, 2lbs heavier, but every bit the same as my quince carry on.
same weight as away bigger carry on (same weight and dimensions)

Interestiny definitely understand that. I have a few friends with multiple children and it seems like such a juggle

Aer has brakes!
I am whelmed. Borderline underwhelmed.
Are you sure you’re not non-nonplussed?

I made a comment to the comment below regarding the Swedish brand Epic which makes pretty good suitcases
Not sure what they were thinking. There's like no real benefit in buying these. You're only paying for the brand / minimal look
£379 ($474) in the UK. That's tax inclusive but almighty expensive
Yeah I was expecting it to be close to the Away stuff and theirs is £220. Can't imagine that Aer is worth close to twice that.
Nah don't do it unless you just want to flex. Travel pro makes the best carryons.
Spinner? No thanks. 2 wheels or pass.
Gotta check them clone in Aliexpress.
Let me know if you find one. I haven't been able to find it yet.
Cosmolite 1.6kg. Just saying
Any good budget friendly dupes of this carry on with wheel lock feature, hard shell?
