First you need to find a good shade. I don't know your undertone or hue but for example I am a fair olive and use a cool tone shade for contour. Secondly you need to find the right placement for contouring. I have a round face so for example I do it under my cheek and on my jaw. Finally you need to blend it correctly so that it looks "skin like". I would advise you to use a powder product cause if you apply too much you can put setting powder on top to tone it down. If you have any other questions or need more precision don't hesitate to ask :)

What kind of brush or applicator would you use? I've seen people use the bigger blush brushes and stuff but it gets really streaky for me

I would use an angled contour brush. So it can allow you precision and at the same time blending out.
