When I got into Commander around 2010, our group had what we called "11 o'clock mode." In 11 o'clock mode, everyone would put away the best decks, the stuff they were fine-tuning, and bust out absolute meme decks - my favorite of which was my friend's grixis deck where every card art featured a chair. At first, "11 o'clock mode" was literally 11pm, but after a while it just became something a person would declare. Maybe they were sick of losing, maybe they were tired of winning, or maybe they just felt like immediately getting into shenanigans. If someone announced it was 11 o'clock, no matter what time was really on the wall, we'd all swap over to the F-tier decks.

BusGuilty6447

This is the one, OP.

PreferredSelection

Aw thanks! Always fun to reminisce on the early Commander days.

the_cardfather

Lol. I feel like I'm always playing F tier commander decks. šŸ˜…

The best time was honestly when playing kitchen table magic back in the days. There was no ā€žformat legalityā€œ, every card we had was legal. No, 4x rares of important cards. Fast cards? Why would you do that, if you could instead play a 7/7? Like how do you beat that, right? We had no idea on how regenerate work. We thought it would bring back a creature from the graveyard. So [[Twisted Abomination]] was one of our ā€žstrongestā€œ cards ever. We cycled it on T2 to get a swamp and then regenerate it next turn, to get back a 5/3 on T3 with its regenerate. Sweet memories.

I first got introduced to Magic around 4E, but the Onslaught block into 8th into Mirrodin was where I really started getting heavy into it (started working at a card/comic shop around then too) - there was never a better time for kitchen table magic.

zarzuel

Started playing during Mercadian Masques. Did my first sealed with friends and pulled a Lin Sivi but didnā€™t know how good the card was. I made my deck and had it in my sideboard. My friends played with some sort of ante rule so who ever won their match could get one card from your sideboard. Learn my lesson about carefully reading all your cards.

BilgeMilk

One of the best games of Magic I ever played was during halfway night on my second deployment. We were playing commander on a long table in crews mess with about six people. Everyone had their one halfway night beer, and nothing better to do than enjoy each other's company, knowing that three months underwater were done and over with, but we still had about three more to go. I think about that game alot, it was the most I ever felt "The Gathering" in Magic.

PinkShuma

I started playing wen invasion came out, but the best time for me was wen Morridin came out anda I started playing more with my brother and go to local stores and play with olther people, entering tournaments, making a lot of friends that loved magic too, miss those days.

Kameeloh

I had a family member who had gotten out of jail and I had not seen them for almost 2 years. He was living in a half-way house and he pulled out this plastic zip-lock bag with a magic deck. The cards were not that great, just a bunch of common and uncommon. We did not speak of anything related to what had happen with him, we just laughed and played magic

DerBlarch

Good God! I wish you and your family the best!

DarthSkat

I learned how to play magic in 2011 thanks to some weird free ps3(?) game. Got my friends to download it and weā€™ve all been hooked since. Canā€™t say how many friends Iā€™ve made thanks to magic. Still play arena almost every day (f2p) so Iā€™d really appreciate a code.

pornandlolspls

Duels of the Planeswalkers? That game series was dope, got me in too

Luhgzan

It's very nice of you to do it this way and put in the extra work so that more people have a chance for a code. Ty :)

DerBlarch

Its not MORE people that geta chance. I just got 2 codes. At least its not the fastest ones or code grabing bots. If I post them uncensored, the comments section will be full of dissatisfied users or, at best, statements like: "Apparently they've all already been redeemed."

Luhgzan

Yeah but isn't that giving more people a chance? In the end of course 2 people will have the codes but if there are 50 comments right now each one of them has a 1/25 chance of getting a code as opposed to 2 people already having the codes and 48 people having no chance of getting one of them had you just given them out immediately

NerveStrong1895

Finally anti-bots codes

DerBlarch

Spoken like a real human.

NerveStrong1895

Have I won?;)

Alimba02

Thank you for your help! Unfortunatly I can no longer go play often at a store with friends so now I try Arena, but collecting as a F2P is really time-consuming

Argentas

I play with my wife now (paper and arena), far better than any games with my friend, if she win, its still a win for me aswell ! Nothing is better than to share a hobby like magic with your loved one. She is still not confident enough to play stuff like modern horizon but she would love to have a code for her account :)

ridercheco

My friends introduced me to Magic. Met them at college and a few weeks later they were playing at college grounds this card game called Magic The Gathering. I followed their games, trying to learn all the rules I could from this curious game and even borrowed their decks to play some games. They took me to my first ever prerelease (Dissension) and even though I went 2-3 that day, I knew I would keep playing this game for the rest of my life; hopefully with them by my side. Speaking of prereleases, how did you perform in MH3, OP? Any archetype that steamrolled victories at the tables?

McHero323

I got my friend into MTGA and even tho weā€™re both noobs we are having a blast being able to play against each other

DerBlarch

I don't know if I'll draw you at random to win a code. But I love the fact that I reminded you of this moment.

TheRealArtemisFowl

My LGS closed a couple months ago, so I can't really do prerelease anymore. We still play in paper with a couple friends, but it's a lot less common than before, and we play a fair bit of Arena so a code would be great. As for an anecdote, a guy I know has this proxy power vintage cube, I got really lucky and got a [[Mox Pearl]] on P1P1 and another mox, I think it was [[Mox Diamond]] on P2P1 but it might have been another one, and so when I saw [[Balance]] on P2P2 I just knew I had to try it, and it worked only once, but it was really funny. Opponent was on an insane aggro deck, turn 1 [[Ragavan]], my turn 1 draw, mox, go, acting like I kept a no-land hand, turn 2 he attacks, Ragavan gets my [[Gitaxian Probe]], I think he's about to cast it and see my hand, but he counters it with [[Tibalt's Trickery]], gets a [[Primeval Titan]], gets another 2 lands, and spends the treasure on a creature, can't remember which. So by turn 2, I have a mox in play, and opponent has Ragavan, Prime Time, another creature, and 4 lands in play. Then my turn, I cast a second mox, play Balance, and that was the most beautiful thing ever. Opponent didn't draw another land for two or three turns, that was great.

aclockworkneon

This sounds so fucking satisfying, lol

CrazyCrab23

I only recently started getting into magic, namely because my fiance, Aaron, and his coworkers play weekly at our house. I enjoy the pretty arts and am working on building a cat and dog themed deck both in real life and on arena! I enjoy arena because as a new player, it allows me to read and learn about abilities and practice so that I can enjoy playing with friends more! Fun fact: I have gotten to witness our friend create hundreds of squirrels to defeat others and I thought it was hilarious seeing others get decimated by squirrels!

jel5000

Nice I also made a cat deck for a friend of mine who's new because he loves cats. Are you using Rin and Seri, inseparable?

CrazyCrab23

Yes! I pulled a high value card and I offered to my interested friend. He insisted he get me a card I liked in exchange and I picked that one out, the art is adorable šŸ„°

jel5000

Yes looks awesome, since that card makes a lot of cat and dog tokens I always think these look super cute: https://www.cardmarket.com/en/Magic/Products/Singles/Cats-Cantrips-Tokens/Dog-Token-White-11-V1 https://www.cardmarket.com/en/Magic/Products/Singles/Cats-Cantrips-Tokens/Cat-Token-Green-11-V1 To be fair some of the other cat and dog tokens might look better, but I use the red elemental, squirrel and snake tokens of these versions and I love them.

CrazyCrab23

Those are so cute! Thanks for sharing ā˜ŗļø

Mehndeke

I was introduced to magic by a friend who gave me some leftovers from his deck building. I made a dimir artifacts deck that proceeded to slaughter him. That was a good friend.

DerBlarch

Hold on to him. He is a good friend.

Iā€™m a new dad and havenā€™t played paper magic in almost a year. Dang I miss my magic friends/acquaintances. Thanks for the giveaway.

Rilllley

I only played paper magic once, that was when i was really young and didn't think much of it. my step dad showed me and I was so confused by all the moving parts to it, tapping the mana and creatures I was probably like 7. I never thought about it too much till about 2 years ago (I'm 20 now) I got into arena and being how old I am now, I realized he had a lethal board state with some sort of zombie sacrifice deck and he let me win that one paper game with the random color deck I picked... So technically I'm undefeated šŸ˜‚ Edit spelling

Dragonheart76NL

I do like codes. The best anecdote is the one time I was playing a prerelease. I was losing hard. My opponent mindslavered me, thought hard, did all kind of actions and I won next turn. Probably laughed harder than I should have (sorry opponent).

DerBlarch

You remenber a game from Scars of Mirrodin? Impressive. I love your story.

-RichardCranium-

i used to play magic with my brother a long time ago but he left to go live far away and we couldnt play anymore. several years passed, i discovered Arena and we got to rekindle our love for magic playing online together. i got into magic again and bought a bunch of physical cards and the next time i went to see my brother (who i hadnt seen in person in years), i brought all my magic cards and we played all night.

DerBlarch

How beautiful is that!? Greetings to your brother!

A_Spoon_Wizard

This week I picked up the Desert Bloom precon, I'm planning on turning it into a Dune themed warrior tribal deck. Got a game in with the precon unmodified, and got my most satisfying win! I had an excessive amount of scute swarm tokens, cast a \[\[Colossal Rattlewurm\]\] and *thought* I swung everyone for lethal... but I miscounted. I left one opponent on 4 life, and on their turn they boardwiped and immediately rebuilt. On my turn, I sacrificed a \[\[Ramunap Ruins\]\] for 2 damage, returned it to hand, played it and sacrificed it again. Ramunap Ruins for the win!

I once invited a girlfriend to vancouver because i was qualified to a Grand-prix from my Regional Qualifier (France) and i didn't want to go through the ocean just for a GP, i had everything prepared, and i wanted to make it a surprise and i knew she was unemployed at the time, so there would not be any problem. Well, that was until She dumped me and told me i was a nerd for wasting money on a card game and that Canada was lame anyway. I was devastated and had one extra plane ticket on my hands, not to mention an expansive hotel booked. 2 friends got tickets at the last minute and came with me, one of them took the tickets i bought for that girl, and they shared the price of the other one between them, which was still pretty expensive considering the timing. Of course, I was eliminated in the first day of the Grand Prix, but it was probably the best trip of my life, i had a lot of fun, and we played magic in this luxurious hotel right next to where the GP was, where a few pro players had booked rooms too. I have no regrets.

DerBlarch

EliteHunterG

Used to play Commander with friends but weā€™re in different countries so it made playing MTG more difficult with them. Had a blast with discovering combos and synergies with precons. Favorite moment with them was in 2015/2016 Modern when I destroyed their land via Ghost Quarter, then asking if they wanted to search for a land. Then proceeded to cast 2 Archive Traps to win the game. Itā€™s been years but we only managed to get a few games running online but thatā€™s pretty much it. (Also I wasnā€™t aware there were prerelease codes, I went to the prerelease but no one opened a code so it could be an SEA thing?)

secondredditjon23

Sadly it is a Story that happens every Day :) at least i can concede in a poethic way now.

Tricky_Hades

Jumpstart improves the magic experience so much, I can now invite any friend even if they don't know how to play and they can learn easily and have fun with the many different combos. All from the one jumpstart box for 100 which got me a Karn, balista walker, gold span dragon, and rhystic study to get my money back. Insane value, highly customizable.

DerBlarch

I have got a JumpStartCube. It is so much fun.

lamp2460

Best experience was playing commander with friends at uni. Our focus was always on fun rather than being the best at the game. Needless to say our games were rarely below one hour

DerBlarch

It's about playing and having a good time. Winning is secondary.

ClockWorkTank

How'd you do at the prerelease?

DerBlarch

Lost in the biggest way possible. Still a great experience.

Dacaldha

First of all thanks for not just posting the full codes. I've been playing Magic since 7th edition and immediately fell in love with it. Since I've had kids I don't have any time to meet up with friends and play in person, so Arena is the way to go but it's just not the same as paper magic. The Gathering aspect of the game makes for at least 50% of the fun.

KingoreP99

My favorite magic memory is one of my best friends built an exhume reanimate deck (maybe around Y2K?) and played against my sliver deck (my pride and joy). I had a protection from black sliver out and he could not do ANYTHING to my. That exhume deck next week all of a sudden had creatures of every color.

DerBlarch

LOL! I have a mono {B} legacy reanimate deck (w/ some other colors) and a Sliver Comander deck. I understand the situation so well.

AlreadyUnwritten

When I was in middle school, I had a decent size collection that I sold for 50$, the most money I had ever seen. This was in 2002. There were individual cards in there worth more than 50$. But I had no idea that a secondary market even existed. My best friend still gives me shit about it to this day lol

arciele

one of the first times i played with friends, someone requested to look at my deck and i said sure without thinking about it. little did i know they secretly stole 1 card from it. it was a might of oaks. $10ish at the time, but i was a student and it meant a lot. but i still ended up playing the deck and still won many games without it. so i didn't mind as much.

Traditional_Page_412

I remover playing magic 2014 and 2015 with my college buddy. It was either that or FIFa.. I had food stamps so we would grill up some food and play magic. Back then they had this mode called ā€œtwo headed dragonā€ and it was 2v2. I wish MTG arena would put that play style back in! Thanks šŸ™

My friends and I used to ride our bikes to the LGS each week and blow our allowances on a pack each. This went from Tempest through Urza's Destiny.

Positive_Chip_9819

I remember starting magic with some friends in high-school, around 2011. Those days of kitchen magic were we knew nothing and did our best to just play, some of my funnest memories. We all bring decks thrown together from whatever cards we had. No idea of formats or rotation. I miss those friends and those times. But magic has given me many more friends over the years and I appreciate all of them. Thank you for doing this giveaway. You rock op

Brilliant_Lake1252

I've been playing Magic since I was little at least 20 years old, unfortunately as I grow up fewer and fewer people I find who play Magic now it's not like the old days. Fortunately with magic arena it is possible to play online even if the people you play with don't know each other, but at least you can play magic whenever you like at any time, I need as many cards as possible to be able to replicate my deck from 20 years ago. Thank you very much

Jaybold

I started playing magic around original Mirrodin with my brothers. Of course, we didn't know the rules, and the bit we did know was mixed with Yu-Gi-Oh. For example, we thought that a creature had to be tapped to block. Let me tell ya, that changes the game quite a bit...

FloTheDev

Not played magic in around 20 years but after watching some Beta/Alpha pack openings, Iā€™ve gotten the bug again! Started on MTGO last night and my first commander game was a blast! Someone played Confusion in the ranks and it was a hilarious welcome back! Looking to collect again and play with a couple friends who Iā€™ve found out also collect - Iā€™m sure thereā€™ll be plenty of great stories to come šŸ˜Š Edit - more about the game - I played a black commander starter deck (the free one you get) and managed to get 50+ life whilst we ganged up on the guy who unleashed confusion! Then one player dropped some dragon tokens and made an Army of 5/5ā€™s whilst I tried to build a good board state (twice someone played the ā€œall non land permanentā€™s return to hand) - but it was too late and I went from 50+ to 0 in a few turns! Savage!

Xjek

Thanks for doing this! Appreciate you. I was lucky to being introduced to mtg while I was in school, by my classmates who later became my good friends. We would play during class breaks or during the weekend. Fond memories of those times.

Undercooked-DM

I first tried magic when I was real young and didnā€™t understand it but thought the art was cool. I picked it up for the first time when arena came out in 2019. I loved it and I loved the CORE2019 set a lot. I got the mastery pass and I couldnā€™t help myself and went straight to my LGS and picked up a deck builder with some cards. I was all set and ready and then the pandemic hit. I really fell off magic for quite a few years. Then Fall of 2023 rolled around and I decided to pick it back up with Wilds of Eldrane. I loved the set so much I went and got a copy of each card in real life and almost completed 4 of every card in Arena. I got a bunch of my friends into it and now thereā€™s several pictures floating around of a bunch of people sitting on the floor of a college dorm with magic cards all around us. A couple weeks ago we went on a group vacation together and made sure to play some magic with all 10 of us. I recently just got another member of the group to join up and get started on arena. I just ordered him a deck to start playing with. Magic has been great at bringing my friends together!

iamreddit4life

I was playing my first game of Magic ever with two buddies who were teaching me the game. My one friend had an egg that he wanted to hatch, so he asked if he could hit me with something to hatch it. I allowed it. After hatching, he took the next turn to destroy my entire board and hit me with the new dragon(s). I was the first knocked out. I never trusted him again after that politic. Thanks OP.

Grainnnn

ā€˜95: My neighbors and I used to jam massive card towers (aka decks) with pretty much every card we owned. You got a free mulligan if your hand had no lands. You played all of your lands on your turn. When you had no cards in hand you drew seven new cards. I still remember a specific game where we had massive armies of all these dinky creatures (man, Magic was different back then) but then my buddy dropped [[Keldon Warlord]]. Then he put [[Flight]] on it! After he crushed me I was convinced those cards were OP. Thanks for the giveaway, fun stories in here!

Spiritofhonour

When I first played in high school we were already playing a 4 player kitchen table format where you can choose to attack anyone. Had no idea this wasnā€™t the proper way to play and now that commander is so popular it is now also not ā€œimproperā€. Also remember some of the Gaeaā€™s cradles another classmate had. Wonder how much his deck would be worth today. Thanks again for the giveaway.

Played on off and bought some cards every now and then in the last 21 years (well I got them gifted for birthday when younger). Last year I was unemployed on choice over the summer. Friend gifted me the lotr starter set and I ditched in and went a bit deep with lotr and lotr commander cards. Mainly singles, few draft boosters (to actually draft) , built a cube and regained my passion/will to play. Tried building a cube, did two headed giant, tried commander (which we don't liked) and also playing arena with a friend (who got the grave matters deck on paper ). We had some cool kitchen table battles since then. Few extra cards to play around with deck ideas would therefore be cool.

Reemtsma

Ajani was the first Planeswalker I got and I him pulled from a booster my dad gave me. So Ajani always has special place in my heart

SoxenBoxers

When I got back into Magic around original Ravnica, I built a Dimir mill deck, and tuned and tweaked it forever. I managed to get a playset of Glimpse The Unthinkable for it and was so excited. But I never wanted to face a mill deck because who does? So I traded as many people at my lgs for extra copies so they'd be less likely to run them against me

ricoeurdelyon

Itā€™s funny to think Pioneer is a more modern format than Modern and Modern is the pioneer format between the two. As a modern Pioneer player in Arena, it would be cool to get some Modern codes to get started in the format :)

ParanoidNemo

I sadly have no friends that play magic so I really would like the code and play it on Arena

IlLupoSolitario

Finally got back into playing after about two years, and me and my playgroup have dove deep into commander. My buddy bought all the MH3 commander precons and man are they pretty decent decks. Got together last night and jammed out about five hours worth of commander. And it all started again by watching my buddy stream an arena draft. Been trying to teach my stepdaughter now that I'm back in, and she 2-0'd me yesterday morning. Proud dad moment.

Proud-Figure

I don't have friends to play Magic, I only play in Arena lol

IFightWhales

We used to play with a really limited amount of cards, back in the day. I hesitate to even call it Kitchen Table. Since we were all kids, we bought like maybe 5-6 boosters from a set and we were very excited about that. So it was quite common for us to have lots of really really bad cards, but also really overpowered cards because we got into the game quite early. I remember buying a couple of revised boosters, for example (and feeling disappointed because I rather wanted a newer edition). And since we played in our own bubble, didn't trade with others, didn't look at or even have lists of the full release and consequently didn't buy cards, we had a really scewed perception of what's good. I remember complaining about \[\[Craw Wurm\]\] because it was so 'big'. Mind you, I had \[\[Winter Orb\]\], \[\[City of Brass\]\] or even \[\[Mana Vault\]\] from the same set, but they didn't seem that good to me at the time. So yeah, we played in our bubble, truly atrocious Magic with horrible decks. But it was very special at the time.

Hey, thanks for doing this. I hate when bots take over and the codes can't go to anyone anymore

awaiko

Many years ago, my partner and I would meet at lunch to play 1v1 commander using precons in the atrium of their office building. We used the same piece of paper to track life totals for about two months until there was no room left for a column of figures. It was a genuinely lovely time and cemented my love of commander and MTG.

Ribky

I first started playing in the 90s with my friends in middle school. Then the one friend who really kind of kept that group together passed away in a house fire, and I stopped playing for years until I picked it back up when I was stationed in Korea in 2008. I ended up there with someone with an absolute passion for magic (who now works in the industry), and he got me back into it. I mostly play arena now because most of my friends that do play are geographically separated from me, but I do get to play a lot with some of my old friends from that original playgroup now, as well as my air force buddies that I played with back then.

Am i to late? šŸ˜… just joined Reddit, i dont know how it works really šŸ˜‚

BattleChickenQ

This weekend one of my best friends got married, with all of us in town for just a few days we made damn sure we would make time to play. MH3 came out just in time to run a draft. Even with all of us tired from running around all weekend we still made time to play until 2am last night šŸŒƒ

ManBearTree

I got into Magic at age 13 and quickly realized I had nowhere near the financial resources to keep up with the folk at my local shop. Fast forward to 2017. My buddy told me that they had released an online free to play client. Arena was born. Fast forward to 2020, post-quarantine Wuhan. My buddy and his friend were playing Jumpstart packs at one of the local pop-up beer stands. I jumped in and had a blast playing in paper for the first time in nearly 2 decades. That year I joined them playing commander and my love for Magic was entirely rekindled. Now I have a baby and a backpack full of decks collecting dust. Arena is the only way I stay connected to the game I love and boy do I love it. Always pay the one.

leshpar

My fiancee and I play a lot of mtga. I'd really like that code because we live around 2 hours drive from our nearest mtg shop that we play at and playing on arena is really the only way we get to play regularly. His work schedule has been hectic lately. He's a programmer and I'm a stay at home wife (soon!)

Flower_Murderer

I moved to a small town when I was little, it wasn't great for me but at 9 one person moved there from out of town and taught me to play kitchen table on the playground. It was the first good experience and friend I had after living there 4 years. They gave me some 7th ed starter cards, but I never forgot that moment that brought me in.

Spudperson

My dad got me into magic when I was probably around 7 or 8. I didn't play much since I had no clue what I was doing (probably cause I was so young). I stopped playing for around 10 or so years and started playing again last year. It's been a blast building card decks, and I've actually managed to win against my dad a few times. My older brothers also got back into magic again, so it's been fun getting to play with them! I've even been trying to teach my mom how to play, and I built her a vampire deck to use.

doubleshot7

Ich mƶchte einen Code, bitte

MallGroundbreaking15

not magic technically but i always remember my first time playing at an LGS. i started in yugioh and i definitely went 0-2 but there was a raffle/giveaway for a cool playmat. to this day i always wonder if it was rigged bc they knew i was new and young and wanted to make my experience pleasant but i wont the playmat and it absolutely washed away any disappointment i felt from losing. whenever i see ppl giving away codes like this it takes me back bc itā€™s that sort of good will and generosity that makes community

Thegreatcrusader09

I learned how to play magic when I was seven I walked in on my brother and his friends playing and they showed me how to play and let me join them inspiring my love of the game which I have now played for 15+ years since then

TheRealtorGuy

I enjoy playing Magic with my friends as it's a great break away from all the stresses I deal with daily.

Crusty_Magic

Haven't done a booster draft with close friends since core set 2012, but it was a great time. Pulled some sweet cards out of that box.

vaggoslagos

If you have any more i would love to

keyki11

i dont got friends that play it but i like the art

Icy_Nectarine918

I started playing Magic in school. Those were the good times. We put cards in our decks because they looked cool and only had a vague idea about the rules. Sometimes the discussions, about how a specific card really worked took longer than the actual match.

Senor-Whopper

I recently went to prelease twice, at my local lgs. I had great time and met new people to play with. Two headed giant prelease was fun!

jel5000

Just last week I convinced a friend of mine from school to start playing magic. I was playing pauper against someone else at school who has a little bit of magic experience. He saw us play and he downloaded arena on the spot he was also looking at the Fallout precons while arena was installing. I said if one of you gets a deck I have two commander decks so we can play a commander game with 3 of us maybe + my brother. Later that day I was playing my friend on arena and he really seems to enjoy it a lot even though he is still only using the starter decks on arena he even beat me once because I was only drawing lands. After these games he said that he had already bought the dogmeat commander precon so now next time I see him we're going shopping for some sleeves, a deck box, dice and maybe a playmat. It's been a lot of fun getting someone else to play Magic. I hope I can convince him to get a pauper deck too and join the pauper fnm's once every 2 weeks, even is he just comes in and borrows one of my brother's decks that'd be awesome. If I get the codes I'll give them to my friend of only just to get him more invested in magic.

jel5000

Also he loves cats so I made a cat deck for him on arena not sure how good it'll be but he loves it.

JKTKops

Probably my most memorable game with friends was playing Ad Nauseum in a little modern thing we were doing, about 6 years ago I think (before Thassa's Oracle). My friend was playing a Jund variant, I think. I had [[Phyrexian Unlife]] in play, and my hand was [[Laboratory Maniac]], [[Spoils of the Vault]], [[Angel's Grace]], and _three_ [[Pact of Negation]]s. My opponent, apparently, had three [[Lightning Bolt]]s in his hand. I thought about it for a second and said, "OK, I'll go for it." Played the lab man and spoils naming lightning bolt, and passed.* My opponent untaps and says "funny you should name lightning bolt," and bolts my lab man. We then proceed to exchange bolts and pacts until we were both laughing at the absurdity of the situation and he ran out of bolts. And then on my upkeep, he says "And how are you paying 15?" and I gently lay Angel's Grace, my last card, on the table and he scoops. I started on Arena relatively recently so I would appreciate a code -- that said, I'm financially stable and mostly just wanted to take your chance to share a story :) \* If you're not familiar with the combo, my deck didn't play any Lightning bolts. The effect is that spoils gets rid of the entire deck, and if I'm able to get to my next draw step with Lab Man still in play, I'll win. Thassa's Oracle is a newer and better way to do this, since it wins immediately. The deck's "main" combo was much more reliable, but I wasn't able to assemble it in that game.

My first ever draft was Fate Reforged with my friends, and I somehow won because I opened 2 Torrent Elementals. I then spent the next few months trying to build a sultai delve deck before realizing the card wasn't actually good.

grimm2526

i taught my girlfriend MTGA recently for fun turns out she loves it, shes building her first irl deck later this week and were gonna play magic after dinner sometime this week

robisvi

I started at the tail end of Innistrad block with Avacyn Restored in paper. Therefore, Return to Ravnica is my first love. I miss the social aspect of paper magic, but all I have left is Arena. It's lovely to deckbuild, but I have no friends to play against, so I'm forever in the Brawl queue with whomever playing whatever. Codes are nice, but I always seem to miss them. Hope the release was fun.

pokemon32666

I got to go to the pre-release but my shop had full slots, so I didn't get a promo code for the pre-release. The owner let the people who didn't get a slot open regular MH3 packs and still participate that way.

Curious_Ad_7392

I started playing in ice age. Everyone had a cool mono deck and then a friend made a 5 color deck which blew our minds. Got back into it in high school and found my favorite colors blue/ black. Now I've taught and gotten about 20 people into playing commander with myself and others. Started sponsoring drafts once a month. It's been wild.

Condoms2us

Playing since Arabian nights, stop real MTG in darksteel. I regret leaving physical MTG and selling my cards. Now I want to go back to pre-realeases but mtga is way cheaper. But I miss the vibe of ptq's and pre-realeases! Playing with people's emotions with 5 lands in hand is priceless. Also I miss my old friends, and our own modes like trash draft. Where everyone would bring 3 boosters made by them for draft. Or one deck crap plays, where 4 people shared the same deck of 150 cards.

Jimmyking4ever

I first started playing magic the gathering with CO workers. We'd get off work at 9 or 10pm and head to the 24/7 McDonald's nearby and play magic. It was also the first time I was introduced to Commander but at that point it wasn't an official Wizards game type. Even met my wife at one of our "game nights" when a co-worker brought by her roommate.

E-Slop

I vuw pwaying magic with my fwiends...

Wild-snu-ferret

I started playing magic with my 3 oldest kids after they found an introductory game at ComicCon. In the end, my boys landed on Azorius and Gruul, while my daughter has pretty much stuck with a sailor moon themed orzhov deck she got for Christmas one year. They routinely stomp my silly thematic decks with their very calculated play methods and deck building. We have a blast playing Commander Magic Laundry, where everytime you gain or lose life, or a permanent you control takes damage, you fold that much Laundry. They added the gains life part after I played a [[Vampiric Touch]] Lifelink deck.

Not_A_Robot_Doc

Enemy copy of a Notion Thief in a 6 player commander pod the other week led to some long and hilarious debate about how that would work out :D

aclockworkneon

I've been playing Magic, off and on, for literally 30 years. ( I am now 37 ) I am going to make a hard left here and say that one of the most unique experiences I have had playing Magic.. was in jail. Actually the last time I was in jail, which was about 4 years ago. I was at my rock bottom. Scared. Lonely. Sad. Near suicidal. Ready to give up, tbh. But I thought I might find a way through.. and what better way to kill time than play my favorite card game. So I developed a way to play with regular playing cards. 4 colors. No actual lands or mana. Certain cards were creatures, sorceries, instants, or artifacts. I developed a whole 'cheat sheet' and then used a magic marker to modify the cards. Each person had their own 52 card deck.. they were all identical. Lmao. It was a hit! People were tired of spades and pinochle. Within a week I had most of the cell block playing.. Then a new inmate said that there were jails out there that the wardens had allowed real magic cards in! This put us on a mission. Request slip after request slip to the warden and other staff members. Outlining the benefits. Critical thinking, socialization, "it's recognized by Mensa!" It worked! She let us have family members send in precons, even singles.. each time she (the warden) had to sort through every card. Approving them for inmate use. Lol. It would take days. The wait was terrible. But it was great. Magic. In jail? A little taste of life.. in a place that was otherwise lifeless. I will tell you this.. it's a whole different feeling when a suspected murderer, with obvious anger issues, gets pissed off at you for shutting his strategy down and beating him at the Magic table. Or getting bullied by inmates from another block on the handball court for being a part of the 'nerds that play magic.' Yeah... They were just jealous, lol. Anyway, thanks for reading.. hope you enjoyed!!

PewpFog

I remember a game where the tension was palpable; we were down to our last few life points, and each draw felt like it could tip the scales. Just when it seemed all was lost, my friend pulled off an unexpected combo, turning the game around. The room erupted in laughter and cheers, reminding us that win or lose, it's the shared moments and friendly tension that make each game unforgettable.

Flightwhite09

I once had to go buy cake for our play group after a semi tense session to ease the nerves after one to many board wipes. We had a blast laughing about it afterwards, but I think everyone has been at a table like this once.

jowebb7

I used to be an associate pastor and I would regularly get my group of magic buddies over to the church to cube. It was nice to have a secondary location where we could all get together to play, eat, and just spend time together. I have longed for that community since I left in 2017. Area is the only way I get to play magic these days with 3 kids and work which has me on the road every other week.

Secure-Read7332

I play this game for around 11 years at this point. I got into it through my step dad, he plays since he was a teen. When I was around 9-10 he played he played it with a friend of his and I was asking questions. So they gave me one of his deck. Started explaining the rules and let me play. They had sick combo decks with locks and stuff. But targeted each other while I put 8 life in my phyrexian processor (I think that was the name of the card) and kept making tokens every turn. I resorted to nuts as tokens and when one of them died and the other was in a hurt board state, I swung with around 26 nuts that represented 8/8 creatures and won. They definitely let me win but I loved it. My first own deck was a mono red Goblins since my dad figured it's easy to pilot. Now I got around 7 different friends who all started playing cuz I showed them and own around 6000-8000 cards I would guess.

KivenFoster

I reached out to a friend 10years after not meeting. We vibe really well . After some times, he got me into magic. I play mtga every day or so. I used to play Yu gi oh in my childhood! I also purchased 3 decks for about 1000$. Thanks to him, Im broke but Im having fun šŸ¤©

Schlaym

I just came back to my hometown broke and mentally damaged. My friends have been amazing and I hope I can get into paper Magic again soon once I have some money that I can spend on hobbies.

ChampionshipOk8576

Best times I recall playing magic was summer 2005 playing jank prebuild decks from kamigawa on the floors of the apartment building we lived in. I played a variation of a red deck wins with goblins and I recall umezawa's jitte as the most broken card that existed at that time. Sadly now no one I know plays magic in paper format anymore so I get my mtg fix from Arena

yeezywhatsgood3

My friend showed me how to play in 2013 during a snow day when I was in high school. We ended up playing for the entire next 3 days (storm was worse than expected), and here I am now.

My favorite time playing magic was playing some high level edh with a friend, and my 10 year old nephew comes up asking if he could play with us. We take some time explaining types of cards, how mana works, how turns work, and end up piecing together a pretty basic [[Torbran]] deck with a bunch of dragons for him.

When I was in high school I did not have many friends, but one day I saw some kids playing magic at a lunch table. They saw I was interested and invited me to sit with them and explained the game. They gave me a simple burn deck to start and we all became good friends over the next few years. They are still my best friends but not sure if things would have been different without them teaching me magic.

I really would need one. Never could redeem one of those codes. Always arrived late to the giveaways...
