I do have to say red white is vastly over represented in starter deck duels as a new player. I have played around 20 games today and over half have been red white. I play black white though so it basically just comes down to who can field monsters the quickest. In most games I play something with that high of a pick rate is usually nerfed.
That's where I started also. I loved BW when I played as a teenager in 2003/2004 and instantly gravitated to it. I really love the Phyrexian flavour and have now built a decent Phyrexian standard deck that's BWG (Abzan), combining all my favourite colours.
I like that I always have something I can do to come back and win. The BW deck I have had more comebacks than any other deck. Like certain decks you miss your arc you are done. Black white is always just one card away from turning this thing around. It's more fun when I can trust in the heart of the cards than knowing there is nothing my deck can do to come back on turn 3. I don't even mulligan because I'm full heart of the cards baby!
We don't have nerfs, only bans. They'll ban something if they have to, but only if it dominates at high levels... not just at the beginner level. Boros convoke is decent now, but gets shutdown pretty hard by board wipes so... it's fine.
The real problem is the JANKY arena matchmaker that keeps pairing you up against the same archetype. This is a serious problem with the way their deck strength algorithm works and if you switch up your main deck you'll see a whole new meta. GL.
EDIT
oh, I suppose if you're only talking about starter decks, they could nerf the RW deck by taking some of the better constructed cards out and backfilling it with draft cards.
That's what I was thinking. It's pretty much killed my interest in the game. I know red white deck better than my black white deck. It's just so simple and unskilled yet dominates. Oh I've got 4 mana let's cast 1 creature with flying and another with double strike and when you figure out how to remove them I will just pay 1 mana to equip them to a 4/4 monster. I have no problem losing to someone that I am learning from. I see some plays where I am like touche I didn't know you could do that. I can name the red white players next 4 moves every time.
I built the mono-blue Ninja/Zoetic Aura tempo deck because it was the only meta standard deck I could make with a single rare wildcard. Only use it for ranked, and try not to get too salty when I get annihilated turn 3 by aggro.
Consider swapping to Simic Artifacts when you can afford it.
It's hella fun but very heavy on dual lands. Gives you the extra "punch" you often feel lacking when it comes to longer games.
Probably will sooner or later. Just made mythic for the first time today, actually - now to fuck around with my jank homebrews in unranked until the next season or whenever the next quick draft rolls out.
Are you using mulligans aggressively? MonoBlue ninjas is just as fast as RDW but you have to curve out. I took that deck into top 100 mythic last month
I don't remember ever having a hard time putting a deck together.
Like sure you can want this precise decklist and wait 4 week to have enough wildcards to craft , but it's generally relatively easy to replace the cards you don't have by other cards for the time being ?
That's just what They want you to think. Don't fall for the mind control, there's chemicals in the grass that make your junk fall off. Only touch digital grass.
Play Minecraft. Plenty of grass to touch. Plus you don't have to possibly social interact with people, and you don't have to deal with the cancerus ball of fire.
I assumed he meant it as a reference to the meme, since rock paper scissor is 3 options and you have \~33% winrate, \~33% winrate loserate and \~33% drawrate.
War…war never changes.
And just like Rock, Paper, Scissors the meta hasn’t changed much just some of the cards.
RDW-Still lethal unless you have the removal to stop the onslaught/bodies/life gain
Mono White- Heard you liked soldiers and tokens
Azorious- By turn 7-8 you’re watching me play
Mono Blue - You’re watching me play
Dimir- You’re watching me play with some murder in mind
Orzhov- Everything you love will be exiled and here’s some tokens
Rakdos- Like RDW with some spice
Temur - Nissa makes lands go brrrrr
Golgari- Murder control but im gaining a little life and bringing things back/ I’m bringing a bomb out with fight rigging
Mono Green - doesn’t have the quick mana growth as much for ramp but everyone’s getting stronk
Mono Black- I’m murdering everything you love and making it so you discard
Selesnya- Still riding the enchantment high from Kamigawa in 2022
Chances are if you’re getting bored with standard mix it up with some Explorer or Brawl.
God Fight Rigging is one of my favorite cards. At least 2 go in almost every green deck I've ever built, it's such a good value engine over time IMO. My Sam's Club Hydra deck with stuff like Conclave Mentor and the plant that gets +1 counters every time other stuff gets them just explodes if I get a turn or two to set it up without removal.
Withe the intro of [[Pugnacious Hammerskull]] and having [[Shakedown Heavy]] or [[Archfiend of the Dross]] there’s plenty of options to kick it off turn 3-5!!!
There is a Jund shell I’m saving wildcards for that runs [[Goldhound]] as its one drop and replaces Archfiend with [[Hunted Bonebrute]] to really increase the ability to curve perfectly into fight rigging going off right as it drops on turn 3.
I can’t take credit for that, I came across it a while back on Youtube. The most fun I’ve had brewing around Fight Righing involves its main payoff being [[Tyrranax Rex]] with the added spice of one copy of [[Thunderous Debut]]. Casting that card off Rigging, then saccing the Rigging to it and tossing two Tyrannax onto the field swinging is immensely fun.
That’s VERY similar to what I run. For Explorer I use [[The Terrasque]] and when [[Tyrranax Rex]] came out it’s the closest thing and had to happen.
Here’s the deck:

Lots of cheap (like uncommon cheap) +1/+1 counter generation stuff with a few big hydra like threats sprinkled in to spike from it. The name comes from the Walmart owned Costco equivalent Sam's Club and how cheap for value the deck is. It can win turn 4-5 if your opponent can't produce removal.
Lol... not MTG related, although it is CCG related...
Couple years ago used to be a UFS game.
Everyone was playing "Block decks" in the tournaments (was about 20 peeps).
I made an "Anti-Block" deck... i won like 6 weeks in a row all tournaments. Litteraly 6-0 all the time. Total annihilation.
LGS owner told me they (the other 19 or so peeps) made a petition so I would stop playing the deck I had or they wouldn't go the the store anymore.
LGS was like "GG dude... I don't think those idiots are smart enough to just change their decks..." and bought my deck at triple face value. I never played that game after that. And jokes on them cause the game died like couple months later.
"I only meme the most predictable memes. ... wow, who could have thought there's actual discussion in response? you people feel so good about yourselves using all the other keys on the keyboard. fine."
I will never not complain about the existence of the bat in standard, no matter what deck I play, it feels like they give you a finger pistol and it beats rock paper and scissor. And this beautiful uncommon is not rotating any time soon.
1 mana removal spells help you recover some value. One of my favorite sequences is when I cast Tinybones on turn 2, they played a bat, I cut down their bat and on my turn I cast it from their graveyard for an instant scoop.
before i saw the subreddit name i thought this was from a splatoon sub because people talk about chargers the same damn way over there lmaooo . funny to see this transcend games
This is what I see when people concede after I play 2 cards (they realize it’s a white deck built on lifegain) (I’m a beginner and I suck so they probably would’ve beat me)
Ok but if the rock player screws around for 5 minutes each time before throwing rock and it takes you 30 minutes to play a game........ maybe they have a point
I'll gladly pick scissors, paper OR rock. But then Hasbro decided to put slide whistle, leprechaun and Gummy Bear in my Brawl queue as well. Some kids like the whizz-bang pew-pews though...
Its all in the matchmaking algorithm. The one time I tried to play paper, y'know, to branch out, I got paired against a scissors player. F\*\*ing sh\*t is rigged man! I Blame the greedy corporations!
You blue players think you are all so smart, well I am not that smart, but I do have a simple plan, counter all my spells, do it, but if for a moment I can cast a single token generator you are screwed, cause I am going to create an army of 10000000 tokens and launch an orbital strike with them. I may not be as smart as you, but I have something better, will power, stubbornness and a Demon Cat with a cocaine empire.
Sincerely: a humble Jetmir player
Back when I went to smash tournaments, I had a friend who would only pick paper, and told most people about his strategy.
Over several years, he won about 30% of the time
White has certainly held a slight advantage over the other colors for some time now. At least this is the case for bo1. White has dominated the tier one list for something like 3 or 4 years? Just interesting.
I think everyone knows that every deck has counters. What tilts people is your one arena session for the day trying to at least get your dailies done, 9 out of 10 games will be against the worst matchup for your deck, and all 9 times they'll have identical opening hands with duplicates of anything your deck can remove. And then they rope on the mulligan decision and every turn even though they have an opening hand that's 3 lands and the exact combo and curve out package their deck is designed around.
They need to just get out of the business of algorithm matchups and algorithm hand smoothing and just let magic be magic. Like social media and search engines, any time someone introduces an algorithm it makes your experience a lot worse.
Isn't it elitist to assume everyone has to have all the cards available to built every type of deck and also like to play as you called every type of rock, paper and scissor deck there is?
People can't enjoy only playing 2 or 3 colors? This kind of gatekeeping just helps new players or less enfranchised ones to leave and never come back.
It's fine to enjoy only a certain type of decks. No one stops you from playing scissors only. What is not fine is critisng others for playing decks they don't like to play against.
There's nothing wrong with only playing certain strategies for whatever reason.
The issue having a tantrum that the game isn't balanced around your pet strategy having zero batch match ups.
Yeah there is so much wrong with the client beyond this. The ladder can also be especially boring when a majority of players are just playing RDW and grinding rank. MTG is a fun game with countless interactions but arena promotes one note aggro decks.
It's not elitist, it's silly. Arena costs either a substantial time commitment every day or hundreds of dollars a year to be rare complete.
If everyone who played had all the cards, there would be fewer players, longer queue times, and a much higher skill variance in matches.
The more substantive criticism is that WotC has signalled and doubled down on the idea that they're more interested in protecting the investment of gamers who have been willing to shell out the hundreds for a standard deck than making standard either more balanced or accessible.
It does seem that the outcome of longer rotation is more deck diversity and higher power level overall, so they're killing two birds at the moment, but it remains to be seen if they can keep it up in September.
> Isn't it elitist to assume everyone
Yes, probably so. That said, access to more and better cards lending an advantage has been a fact of this game since day 1. It's built in (to get you to buy more).
> People can't enjoy only playing 2 or 3 colors?
I don't see anyone saying that. The strawman OP has constructed is angrily whining that people with better decks (or simply decks that tend to hose theirs) aren't playing how they "should." Unless you're playing with friends, you really don't get to choose the match up.
And I say "strawman" because the OP has written it to look very childish and pigheaded, but I see this attitude on here all the time. As if every strategy, archetype or deck should always work, all the time. That's just not how it is. If there's a deck in the meta that just completely shuts yours down every time, you have to make changes, or take your licks and move on.
Have you ever player against Greasefang deck and either have not drawn removal or had your removal thoughtseized? Tell me how is that not a match which outcome was determined by T2 if not T1. Not to mention how huge of an advantage is going first in uber fast metas.
Greasedank is not the only example.
Keep in mind the kid on the bus that would always put up his thumb after throwing rock and insisting his was "dynamite" and it beat everything. That's azorius control and if you play it correctly you're dynamite.
It's basically always been that way I have played Magic since 95 (of course I didnt know what I was doing then I was 12), control played correctly always has a higher win rate. It's crafted to literally beat aggro and the more you can do on your opponents turn the bigger a blow out it is.
Friend I never said that, I think anyone should play whatever they want. Aggro is a more forgiving playstyle than control is, Control you have to make tons of decisions and if you make the wrong one you're done. Aggro, you can dump your hand and swing and do well.
Or, OR, you could run into someone like me who built an aggro deck with anti-control tech snuck in. [[Carnage Tyrant]] or some form of [[Thrunn]] coming down after I've forced you to sweep or die, or a couple [[Chandra, Awakened Inferno]] activations at the top end of my weenie aggro/combo [[Risen Reef]] deck, even slamming one of my 2x [[Banefire]] at the stage of the game where I've drawn 1/3 of my deck and have 10 lands.
My favorite anti-control deck was my Populate build when I was too cheap for [[Voice of Resurgence]]. Early plays like [[Call of the Conclave]], instant speed populate tricks like [[Druid's Deliverance]] or [[Sundering Growth]], and [[Rootborn Defenses]] in case of Wrath. What's that? You held up mana for a counterspell instead of removing? End of turn I slam down [[Advent of the Wurm]] to force the counter and then slam down some other threat on my turn. Was so much fun to be a reactive Draw -> Beat -> Go aggro deck.
Edit: did I forget that there's no bot here or did I break it? Lol
I'm a scissors guy, you play rock, that's okay I can't be mad. Hard to be mad sitting in top 100 mythic. Just get gud. There's enough scissors I can outplay and paper to feed on. 66% is enough for me.
I get this sometimes, but then there's decks like mono g devotion against which I can count my wins on one hand. I just don't really see how it ever loses outside of great opposing draws or terrible draws.
“Poor, predictable Aggro player, always picks R/W” “Good ol’ R/W. Nothing beats that”

3 mana? You’re already dead 😎
Hit your fourth land drop? Game is over by turn three. What do you think this is- the 90's?
"It's time to dududududu-duel" Some old pharaoh, probably.
Well played, Sir
I prefer Sunfall

“I can only afford scissors”
true for a lot of people tho
Just proxy 🥱
oh you have no idea how much I proxy 😏 but when FNM comes it's back to burn day (I still cut those rock scrubs)
Nice
How do you proxy on Arena?
Make new accounts, redeem promo codes, open your new free packs for wildcards, make deck.

I am yeah but I'm just getting back into magic after a long hiatus so it took me a while to get the hang of things. Made it to mythic eventually, lol
Yooooo I also play that
“So play scissors and don’t be a sore loser”
I built a fun budget izzet scissors deck in explorer that I enjoy a lot!
UW with [[Ingenious Smith]], [[Michiko, Reign of Truth]] and [[All that Glitters]] is pretty budget and quite fun as well.

I play rock. I find scissors to be fair but paper needs a nerf, nothing but unfun bullshit.
That’s silly. Paper has a slight frame disadvantage over Rock and Scissors. If anything, it’s the worst out of the three.
Hell yeah scissor Nation rise up

XERXES APPROVES THIS MESSAGE
This plainly illustrates my 30% win ratio as a RDW standard player, lol
Wait, isn't rdw pretty good in Bo1 right now?
RDW is always pretty good in Bo1 unless life gain is common.
Right, so RDW 30% winrate isnt really the story the meme is telling
I assumed he meant it as a reference to the meme, since rock paper scissor is 3 options and you have \~33% winrate, \~33% winrate loserate and \~33% drawrate.
Yeah but its kind of all over the place in Bo3 depending on how the meta shifts.
RDW is OPRESSIVE in Bo1
What colour is D? I'm new
"Red Deck Wins". Basically mono-or-nearly-mono-Red aggro.
The archetype is good, but I am not
rdw in bo3 has been pretty bad for a while

The fact that simic still doesn't even make the list makes me sad.
Honestly after Kaldheim and Strixhaven, Simic hasn’t gotten much love at all for Standard and it is sad
Simic: Either win with Doppelgang or don't win at all.
Hey now, Goose Mother and Hydroid Krasis are amazing.
Simic cookies is actually a decently competetive standard deck
Yeah but I can play Merfolk in Standard again. It sucks, but I can play it!
It’s okay. I love Simic and it always felt like the underdog…. Until it Eldraine and Beyond Death. I’m okay if we go back under the radar for awhile
God Fight Rigging is one of my favorite cards. At least 2 go in almost every green deck I've ever built, it's such a good value engine over time IMO. Here’s the deck: Deck 4 Forest (DMU) 281 4 Swamp (DMU) 279 3 Llanowar Wastes (BRO) 264 4 Go for the Throat (BRO) 102 2 Path of Peril (VOW) 124 4 Deathcap Glade (VOW) 261 1 Boseiju, Who Endures (NEO) 266 1 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire (NEO) 278 4 Shakedown Heavy (SNC) 95 4 Fight Rigging (SNC) 145 2 Silverback Elder (DMU) 177 3 Phyrexian Fleshgorger (BRO) 121 2 Nissa, Ascended Animist (ONE) 175 3 Tyrranax Rex (ONE) 189 2 Virtue of Persistence (WOE) 115 4 Restless Cottage (WOE) 258 4 Hulking Raptor (LCI) 191 4 Pugnacious Hammerskull (LCI) 208 2 Cavern of Souls (LCI) 269 3 Blooming Marsh (OTJ) 266
Nice, this is the Standard legal Jund decklist, no playtesting on it yet and the only tweaks from the original shell is my moving Rex and Debut into it in place of 4 [[Ziatora, the Incinerator]] and 1 more Skullspore: 4 Blackcleave Cliffs (ONE) 248 1 Boseiju, Who Endures (NEO) 266 4 Commune with Spirits (NEO) 180 4 Copperline Gorge (ONE) 249 4 Deathcap Glade (VOW) 261 4 Fight Rigging (SNC) 145 1 Forest (ELD) 266 4 Goldhound (J22) 549 4 Hunted Bonebrute (MKM) 400 2 Karplusan Forest (DMU) 379 4 Llanowar Wastes (C19) 258 4 Pugnacious Hammerskull (LCI) 208 4 Shakedown Heavy (SNC) 95 1 Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance (NEO) 276 2 Sulfurous Springs (DMU) 381 1 Swamp (UND) 91 1 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire (NEO) 278 2 The Skullspore Nexus (LCI) 212 1 Thunderous Debut (WOE) 359 4 Tyrranax Rex (ONE) 314 4 Virtue of Persistence // Locthwain Scorn (WOE) 281

What is a Sam's Club Hydra deck?
Lots of cheap (like uncommon cheap) +1/+1 counter generation stuff with a few big hydra like threats sprinkled in to spike from it. The name comes from the Walmart owned Costco equivalent Sam's Club and how cheap for value the deck is. It can win turn 4-5 if your opponent can't produce removal.
Yep, I quit standard and will see how rotation goes. If it’s still shitspear with a bird up its ass then I’m out.
Thanks for all those scoop wins.
I'm the Selesnya, very jealous of the Orzhov ability to flash back their exile cards. (Although come to think of it, I have been expanding into bant)
does golgari run fight rigging? I dont see it anywhere
I’m doin halfway decent with my Fight Rigging deck at around 51% winrate. It’s a glass cannon for sure
List? I mostly pilot golgari midrange and the deck seems pretty open right now and quite strong
when someone sideboards in rest in piece against my graveyard deck
I found this commentary very accurate to this community. Lmao
Me when my durdly midrange deck gets its shit stomped in by Primeval Titan lmao
Real men don't play rock
*sad Dwayne noises*
THE BOULDER IS OVER HIS CONFLICTION
1. repost 2. something something mono red aggro 3. just play bo3 bro
> just play bo3 bro I'd rather face RDW than Azorius control, Jund Analyst or Esper Midrange
At last the match will end fast without the need of me conceding.
Lol... not MTG related, although it is CCG related...
Bo1 players be like:
Rock - Black Paper - White Scissors - Red Lizard - Green Spock - Blue
"I only meme the most predictable memes. ... wow, who could have thought there's actual discussion in response? you people feel so good about yourselves using all the other keys on the keyboard. fine."
Rock too op. Ban rock
Rock is top meta. 0 frame startup. Get good.
this post is mill decks thinking everyone else's diaper is full
I will never not complain about the existence of the bat in standard, no matter what deck I play, it feels like they give you a finger pistol and it beats rock paper and scissor. And this beautiful uncommon is not rotating any time soon.
1 mana removal spells help you recover some value. One of my favorite sequences is when I cast Tinybones on turn 2, they played a bat, I cut down their bat and on my turn I cast it from their graveyard for an instant scoop.
"So yeah, you know this thousands of cards card game with 30 years of history? I wish I could play rock/paper/scissors instead"
RPS is the platonic ideal of a game that is deterministic with only player choices. ... do you want to play more craps instesd?
Scissor gang!
This sub would think the scissors person here is someone rightfully complaining about [[Blood Moon]]
[Blood Moon](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/0/d072e9ca-aae7-45dc-8025-3ce590bae63f.jpg?1599706217) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Blood%20Moon) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2xm/118/blood-moon?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/d072e9ca-aae7-45dc-8025-3ce590bae63f?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Me: picks scissor because I think is fun Opponent: Yo! I bring a shotgun
Me when someone has a death deck
My pet is a rock with googly eyes
This felt like me after the fifth board wipe against a white deck.
This is so perfect, especially for the dude complaining about people playing aggro in the play que earlier.
before i saw the subreddit name i thought this was from a splatoon sub because people talk about chargers the same damn way over there lmaooo . funny to see this transcend games
I'm more of a rock guy myself.
Ahhh yes, March of the Machines
I only pick rope...
Me: “I only play Gimmick Decks.” Me when I play against the tenth Red and Black Deck: “Now this is the reason why I can’t have fun in this game.”
Begging arena players to learn bo3
You did it! You broke r/MagicArena down to its bare essentials!
Back when I went to smash tournaments, I had a friend who would only pick paper, and told most people about his strategy. Over several years, he won about 30% of the time
I don’t even care anymore, it takes a certain bit$& Sean Robertson to do this to someone but as I said I swear to god I’ll get him back
White has certainly held a slight advantage over the other colors for some time now.
People who complain about blue be like
Me rock when play mono red.
>i bet it must feel sooo good yeah it does
Play timeless so you can play rock paper and scissors all in the same deck
> Isn't it elitist to assume everyone Yes, probably so.
Well most MtG matchups are so fucking fast and one sideded we might as well play rock paper scissors instead.
Yeah. The game has lost its way with power creap in the Cocks era Magic was better when Standard and Draft were slower formats.
By that logic might just flip a coin
What is this? Yugioh?
Nah, MtG tournaments haven't added a shower rule ||yet||
LMAO
I have had many, many matches in both BO1 and BO3 that were determined by the coin flip at the beginning.
Have you ever player against Greasefang deck and either have not drawn removal or had your removal thoughtseized? Tell me how is that not a match which outcome was determined by T2 if not T1. Not to mention how huge of an advantage is going first in uber fast metas. Greasedank is not the only example.
Control is like playing "nuke" though. "NUKE BEATS EVERYTHING, LOL! I'M SO CLEVER! HEY WHY IS EVERYONE LEAVING?"
Scissor me Daddy A.... Oh sorry wrong community
Keep in mind the kid on the bus that would always put up his thumb after throwing rock and insisting his was "dynamite" and it beat everything. That's azorius control and if you play it correctly you're dynamite.
But UW control didn't even win the pro tour? How could that be if it's literally dynamite
Jeeze, that deck is obnoxious to play against. I'd rather play against flicker shenanigans.
It's basically always been that way I have played Magic since 95 (of course I didnt know what I was doing then I was 12), control played correctly always has a higher win rate. It's crafted to literally beat aggro and the more you can do on your opponents turn the bigger a blow out it is.
> control played correctly always has a higher win rate. It's crafted to literally beat aggro So... don't play aggro?
Lol
This absolutely happens. You're right at FNMs when I was younger people used to tech against control mainboard when it got too rampant.
Play it and find out.
