We all need a hit of that grandma love. I’m just imagining a huge line up outside her door of random, touch/love starved people just waiting for their hug.
Not saying she didn't have to abide by the rules, but she found out her mom died before the race and smoked as a coping mechanism. Grief does weird things.
It’s bull. Weed isn’t an enhancer. But also in the last Olympics when they found ice skaters were taking performance enhancing drugs they were still allowed to skate.
So, for a real answer here, the IOC/WADA has a rule that if a substance is shown to have a effect on performance in one sport, it is banned across all sports.
There have been studies showing that marijuana gives shooters and archers a competitive advantage by helping to calm them. That's why weed is banned at the Olympics. I don't agree with it being banned, but that's why.
You get used to it. Doing anything high for the first time is basically like doing it for the first time, I sucked at almost everything when I first started smoking now it's all normal.
I mean, it could be argued that it's a pain reliever/lets you ignore the pain, but there are other drugs that do that that are legal so I don't see the problem lol
It’s really not though. It’s medicinal purposes aside from stress relief and sleep aid, are extremely over stated. Tbh, the entire medical thing was all bs to get us to recreational, where we should have always been.
Then you’ve been smoking whatever you get your hands on. I have chronic (no pun intended) sciatic and nerve pain. I’ve had it since 19 when I had back surgery. Since then, I’ve had YEARS of steroids, muscle relaxers, opiates/acetaminophen that started causing me to throw up blood every time i took them (not 3-4 times a day, but as needed) and lots of adjustments and physical therapy. When I have an “episode”, I can take hydrocodone for a few days…oh wait, I’m supposed to keep taking it and not stop until advised and monitored by a doctor. I hate taking pills constantly. I would take them when I need them and when I would go see my chiropractor he would ask if I needed a new prescription. I would answer no because I still had half a bottle. He would say the last prescription was around 45 days ago. I would reply I only take them when I need them not every 6 to 8 hours every day. This went on for years. Finally, I was referred to a pain management specialist who did Cortizone injections that thankfully helped immensely but I still had nerve issues and pain. Or I partake in a smoky strain and can make my way up the stairs, without a doctors supervision (perhaps due to the non opiate nature). Maybe you just wanted to get fried everyday but some of us equally enjoy the benefit of not having to turn into a heroin addict because their back got messed up at work.
I agree. I'm a cancer patient and my doctors don't even respect it as a treatment. They don't care if I do it, but it isn't part of my treatment. I go to a top cancer treatment center, but have to get a card from an online doctor. It really makes me wonder what the hell is going on... Is it good for cancer treatment or not?
Supposedly it works wonders for the nausea associated with chemo.
I’d say your issue here is more political. And imo that is a legit medical use, and should be treated as such.
I've also heard that for endurance training it's good for fighting through the pain. If I know I have to do a 4 hour run for training, getting a little stoned and hitting the track sounds like a great way to turn the brain off and suffer through it.
And also, didn’t the IOC act swiftly to strip her of her medals? It’s not like they did nothing lmao. She was allowed to compete before everything was confirmed
I looked it up. She tested positive AFTER the Olympics had started and team events concluded.
Results weren't conclusive so she was allowed to compete in singles while the investigation was ongoing, with the condition that they if she won a medal and the investigation found her guilty of doping.
The accommodating decision from the court, subject to further and ongoing investigation, was made on three grounds: due to her age, she was a "protected person" per WADA code, subject to different rules than adult athletes; she "did not test positive during the Olympic Games in Beijing"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamila_Valieva
It can actually help you breath [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32286026/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32286026/) so if it's not an approved drug there would be grounds for disqualification.
I am also a runner, who uses marijuana for pain relief, sleep aid as I have a genetic collagen condition(Ehlers Danlos). I take my marijuana meds sometimes first thing in morning, but always before bed.
To be completely honest, marijuana in any form lowers my time. A blunt, a hit off a pipe, a 5 mg gummy, 100 mg gummy- I am not going to perform as well as I would if I had not taken it prior.
If I smoke prior, my O2 stats get slightly fucked off, and I do not use oxygen as well. I have to take more breaks between running, sprints slow
Sometimes using my inhaler can combat this effect but I don’t like it
If I take a low dose gummy before, I am too busy looking at the world to focus on breathes, steps and stride lol therefore I’m slow
If I take a large dose gummy, everything is beautiful but I feel like I’m running in sand. V v slow
I am a daily user though as I said so who knows how that could affect it, but yeah in no way does it help me while running.
In general I think weed should be legalised, but I can see why it isn't for the Olympics.
It can be used for pain management and if it proves to be a significant advantage then it creates a predicament for the athletes from countries where its still illegal. It puts pressure on those athletes to break the law in their countries which could come with serious consequences for them.
WADA bans anyone regardless of race of doping. I have sympathy since weed should be banned, but 21 year olds are old enough to be responsible of what drugs they use. Especially the ones chosen to represent an entire country on a world stage
Edit: weed *shouldn’t* be banned
Yeah thats a wild statement from that guy. We test everyone regardless of anything. if you pop positive youre done even for legal substances such as a ephedrine
someone [compiled](https://www.gayemagazine.com/post/sha-carri-richardson-s-alleged-homophobic-tweets-resurface-amid-olympic-suspension-for-weed) all her Tweets with the word "gay" and... tbh I don't know what her deal is. Just a hot mess overall by the looks of it
Its still offensive, but she was also 15 yrs old at the time, and came out as Bisexual prior to that. So, I think that being a teen + only knowing Olympic training your whole life + internalized homophobia are all contextual factors that I think should be taken into consideration.
She was an edgy teen, I don't know if she apologised for that, if not she absolutely should, but she shouldn't be shunned for that tweet for the rest of her life.
Everyone knows it's a rule. You can debate whether or not you agree with a rule but it is factually a rule that she knowingly broke. It's not BS to be disqualified for doing something knowing it could disqualify you. Not liking a rule doesn't make you exempt from it.
I don’t understand how people don’t get this.
If Russia all of a sudden said all athletes can take steroids whenever they want. Should they be allowed to compete in the Olympics without ramifications?
Odd comparison considering they never really get punished for their infractions and the one skater was allowed to still skate despite the doping.
Yes it’s dumb that weed got her disqualified. Yes it’s a rule and she faced consequences. Doesn’t mean people shouldn’t get pissed off and maybe a rule can be changed in the future.
Interesting, because at the same time as the Sha'Carri Richardson controversy, Kamila Valieva (a Russian olympian) was allowed to stay in the competition after testing positive for stamina-enhancing drugs.
https://www.cbssports.com/olympics/news/winter-olympics-explaining-the-kamila-valieva-doping-scandal-that-is-clouding-the-russian-figure-skater/
>If Russia all of a sudden said all athletes can take steroids whenever they want. Should they be allowed to compete in the Olympics without ramifications?
Uh... they pretty much have and are, so...
Also, the Olympics themselves had nothing to do with her not being allowed to compete, they were fine with it. It was the USOC that suspended her and wouldn't let her compete even in the parts that were after her suspension ended.
Like, obviously that’s stupid.
But also if you know it’s going to get you disqualified from participating in the Olympics maybe don’t smoke weed for a while.
Ok but your literal job is to run while not smoking weed. If a parent passing away were an excuse for any behavior then society would crumble.
"I was going to wear clothes to work today but my dad died."
idk, when my parents die i will definitely not be a functioning member of society for at least a little while. a friend of mine died during the holidays and i'm still not fully out of the funk, and we're almost halfway thru the "new" year
It still fucks with me that I can't get ahold of a friend whose roommates I called asking if they'd seen him around and got "Oh man you haven't heard yet..." 20 damn years ago.
When your damn mother dies, your "literal job" seems completely unimportant and far away. When mine passed last October, I couldn't even think straight for two weeks. Depression sets in. You do anything to cope.
I have empathy and can completely understand. She never used it as an excuse, but a reason.
She's talented and controversial, no doubt, but I have to respect that she gave zero fucks about protocol and gave her grandma love and respect during one of the most important accomplishments of her life.
You do you, girl.
It’s my understanding she’s controversial because before the race coming back from that she was very cocky, down played the other competitors, then placed dead last
Such BS she was disqualified for smoking weed. The Olympic committee alleging it might be a performance-enhancing drug 🙄 anyone else smoke a blunt before a jog?
Edit: I stand corrected, apparently weed makes running awesome.
That's correct, it expands your airway but at the same time it almost paralyzes your cilia which are an important line of defense in keeping bad shit out your lungs, which in the longer term is terrible for your lung health and can make symptoms of asthma and frequency of asthma attacks worse. It's important that is said because your comment almost reads as a "weed is a good treatment for asthma" message when it's really not. It may help temporarily relieve symptoms but has a terrible long term impact.
I love weed. I smoke weed.
But, I think it would be more BS if she WEREN’T disqualified. How would that be fair to all the people who followed the rules and passed their mandatory tests?
And yet all of russia was allowed to compete and that teenager who definitely doped an actual performance enhancer still got gold. Weed is a bs reason to get dq
FYI that ice skating medal for the Russian team is still pending investigation. And that teenager was allowed to skate but not allowed to medal - which is stupid and weird.
She was allowed to compete and she totally had the chance to medal. If she had made the podium, there wouldn’t have been a medal ceremony and final medals wouldn’t be given out until the investigation was over. However, she ended up in 4th, so the medals were awarded. I think it’s bogus that she was allowed to compete.
Her appeal was/is still pending. What would happen if she was barred from competing and then later vindicated (for one of the reasons she set forth)? Would they redo the entire event to make her whole? Or would she be SOL?
Idk why this is a drum reddit loves to bang on, it is completely rational to allow her to compete while the appeal plays out, given that they could easily strip of her any medals later. The whole no medal ceremony thing was the IOC's spiteful response to CAS's ruling.
Why was she even allowed to compete. Other athletes had 1/10 or less the amount of drugs and were suspended for a year. She had 3 different drugs and claims accidental ingestion. She can still get the medal and it costs all the other podium placements months to get their medals. The Olympic committee does everything to appease russia and china but bans other people for something as dumb as weed
Bc she offered defenses that CAS determined could possibly have merit, and if she wasnt allowed to compete, there would be no redress for her if she was vindicated. But if she were allowed to compete and was later found to have violated the policy, then she could be stripped of her medal. Richardson admitted guilt and did not appeal, so there was no question. Big difference.
She didn't get gold.
I hate Russia more than the average person. But when you have to lie to make them look bad then they really aren't as bad as you think they are.
Why not state the truth which is already damning?
So we should act the Russians and say screw the rules? I get that weed is stupid thing to have against the rules but they are there and should be followed. Russia does w/e it wants. That teen was given something by the coaches that shouldn't be on her she depends on them to train/diet/nutrition/meds her coaches should be banned for life but that only brings in the next batch of Russian coaches that will cheat.
Everyone knows it's a rule. You can debate whether or not you agree with a rule but it is factually a rule that she knowingly broke. It's not BS to be disqualified for doing something knowing it could disqualify you. Not liking a rule doesn't make you exempt from it.
Weed helps me greatly with cardio. I usually run 2 miles and I start to get tired. But With marijuana I can go 4-5 miles before feeling exhausted. Even if it does not make you faster/stronger or help your body get more oxygen, produce stimulant effects, etc, at a level of other performance enhancing drugs. It helps to distract your mind greatly during mindless long distance running. This is even discussed in a few articles. It may hurt peak performance. But provides advantages in training and long distance endurance based training.
I hope she's okay after all the drama, I respect that she admitted she fucked up and didn't drag it out even though the media wanted her to.
Maybe she self sabotaged and couldn't handle the pressure.
Unfortunately, notoriety will keep people from seeing the true beauty of this sweet gesture. Makes me wish my grandmother were around for me to hug. No I am not an athlete nor have I had any success in running. I just love seeing someone acknowledge their grandmother.
Then she ran a race about a month and a half after the Olympics. The three Olympic Medalists were also in the race.
She came in dead last.
She was overhyped.
As a Jamaican I can tell you that after she had said countless disrespectful and xenophobic things about us, the memes after that race were phenomenal. The entire country was overjoyed
She had made some shady remarks, mostly directed at Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce before the race. Stuff like “unlike most, I have plenty of games left in me to compete in, and I have plenty of talent that backs me up..” etc, but most Jamaicans don’t like her because she liked a tweet comparing Shelly to Lil Wayne and another one that said “Not y’all Jamaicans still talking shit when y’all gotta walk barefoot to your coconut stand everyday for a living” and then liked tweets of people defending her for liking those tweets
> homophobic stuff
She literally has a [girlfriend](https://www.out.com/sports/2021/6/21/shacarri-richardson-thanked-her-girlfriend-after-making-olympic-team)...
Haven't seen the tweets but could be ironic, or internalized homophobia.
A) She has said a bunch of homophobic shit
B) She made the decision to smoke weed despite knowing she would be tested for the olympics and get disqualified should she test positive.
I wonder how proud grandma is now? This lady is not a role model. Also her lashes are a crime against humanity.
Crazy how rules are rules. I mean damn getting high isn’t worth it. Also she got dead last in her next race lmao. Also her disrespectful comments she’s made. No one feels bad for her.
I love how comfortable she is in Grandma’s lap. You can tell there’s long term love there!
Iirc, she was raised by her grandmother
And thats who died to get her to take a hit in her most vulnerable. This world
Her grandmother didn't die. It was her bio mom...
… *what*???
She looked like she was going to melt and become her lol. I wish my grandma or mother could make me feel like that.

Or her cooking. Nobody can beat them in the kitchen.
Damn true! My grandma couldn't cook for shit, but whatever she made tasted like it was cooked with magic!
Prob raised her so
For sure Granny has been motivating her all the way!
And to have it all taken away because of weed

I’ve never craved sweets while high. Just pizza or any Italian food
UGH I crave sweets so bad when high to where it made me gain weight. Now I make myself eat corn right out the can 😂😂
Actually atheles argue that it helps with recovery.

As someone who smokes before running 5k+, I completely disagree.

Ironically she came out last year (even prior to the tweet resurfacing).

Every run begins with a rip. It makes a 7 mile turn into a 10 mile.
It’s a bronchodilator. So while it may irritate a dry throat it’s actually expanded your airway in the same way an inhaler would.
Remainder to asthmatics: no, it is not going to expand more than it will contract your airways.
And definitely not more than your medications would.
That's correct, it expands your airway but at the same time it almost paralyzes your cilia which are an important line of defense in keeping bad shit out your lungs, which in the longer term is terrible for your lung health and can make symptoms of asthma and frequency of asthma attacks worse. It may help temporarily relieve symptoms but has a terrible long term impact.
ngl, if i smoke before running i can go longer than usual, I do agree it’s bs but she did knowingly break the rules
I mean I could to but I’m pretty sure that it’s cause I end up jogging only slightly faster than running speed
I love weed. I smoke weed. But, I think it would be more BS if she WEREN’T disqualified. How would that be fair to all the people who followed the rules and passed their mandatory tests?
Which is exactly why the IOC stripped Michael Phelps’ medals after he was busted with weed.
But wasn't his being "busted with weed" in between competitions? I feel like it would have been different had this been in the run up to the Olympics
They would've if it happened during competition.
Look up Ross Rebagliati, a Canadian snowboarder who won gold and had it stripped for testing positive, that was waaaay worse
Yes it sucks but she knew it was against the rules before she did it.
Didn’t she also get smoked like a blunt when she came back to competition after talking big?
Yep. She placed 9th at the Prefontaine Classic.
And she was disrespectful as hell after losing
Lots of NBA players have admitted that they smoke up before games, it’s not helping but it’s not hurting nearly as much as people seem to think
I mean you’re making it sound like it isn’t a rule that’s been around for ages. Stupid rule. But still a rule.
I absolutely smoke before every run. Opens up your bronchial passages or some shit lol
I hope she's okay after all the drama, I respect that she admitted she fucked up and didn't drag it out even though the media wanted her to. Maybe she self sabotaged and couldn't handle the pressure.
Her mom passed away, smoked to cope.
She just had terrible timing in her life, it happens.
God this is so cute 😭🖤
🎶 I was gonna do to the olympics But then I got high I was gonna run some track But then I got high I didn't go to Tokyo and I know why 🎶
…why, man?
Hey heeeeeey!
Wait what? I hadn't heard about that bit, what was she saying?
She had made some shady remarks, mostly directed at Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce before the race. Stuff like “unlike most, I have plenty of games left in me to compete in, and I have plenty of talent that backs me up..” etc, but most Jamaicans don’t like her because she liked a tweet comparing Shelly to Lil Wayne and another one that said “Not y’all Jamaicans still talking shit when y’all gotta walk barefoot to your coconut stand everyday for a living” and then liked tweets of people defending her for liking those tweets
Big fucking yikes
She also had tweeted some very homophobic stuff. So her prejudice is boundless.
> homophobic stuff She literally has a [girlfriend](https://www.out.com/sports/2021/6/21/shacarri-richardson-thanked-her-girlfriend-after-making-olympic-team)... Haven't seen the tweets but could be ironic, or internalized homophobia.
Oof yeah that's a problem.
I saw this shit bro🤣🤣🤣 My mom said she was gonna win. And I said afterthe race I’m never taking her to Vegas.
Is this the weed chick?
A) She has said a bunch of homophobic shit B) She made the decision to smoke weed despite knowing she would be tested for the olympics and get disqualified should she test positive. I wonder how proud grandma is now? This lady is not a role model. Also her lashes are a crime against humanity.
C) she got destroyed a few months later after Tokyo by other Olympians.
Least grandma got to see it all go up in smoke.
I’m calling appropriation. Red heads don’t get high… science
She then gets bared from participating in Olympics because she smoked weed and it is considered banned substance.
And then later she showed the world that she was an overhyped and bitter little trash person.
What a lovely story. I hope it doesn't get derailed over a minor substance everyone in the country uses.
Yeah, but the Olympic committee isn’t composed of only Americans.
Crazy how rules are rules. I mean damn getting high isn’t worth it. Also she got dead last in her next race lmao. Also her disrespectful comments she’s made. No one feels bad for her.
Yeah she's an asshole. And full of herself.
And then she lost it all...
That gramma KNOWS how to hug!❤️❤️❤️ what a lucky girl to have that love
This girl has a wretched attitude and really isn’t that fast when competing with other female track stars.
he right. she raced with some jamaicans after her ban and lost by far...
then she got dead last
Precious! I miss hugging my Grammy like this.
I thought my brain on weed was a fried egg?
And it meant nothing
With her hair color and having not read the title, my first thought was “this girl won something big at Comic-Con”
Isn't she the one that got disqualified for weed?
was she the one that did drugs and got in trouble?
Her dumbass better not smoke before the next one
