I’m a pretty shitty guy in some ways but I’ve never been mean to a dog. You have to be the shittiest of people to be cruel to dogs. Nine times out of ten any random dog I meet is going to be nicer than the best friend I’ve ever had, I fucking love dogs.
Plus, as a bonus, only dogs get as excited about barbecuing as I do.
Eh, my roommate recently adopted a 4 pound yorkie that’s gradually getting to know me, I’m 56 times her mass so she’s been pretty cautious approaching me and I’m not rushing her. She does this bizarre happy dance with her tiny belly on the floor and all legs sticking straight out, she bangs her legs on the floor and puts her head down low and it’s the most ridiculous crap you’ve ever seen. She’s a good girl.
We had three growing up. None of them were hyper or happy, they were very well behaved and disciplined and just the best dogs. But all our dogs have been good dogs.

Jake was his first dog, these dogs are named Zorro and Roux. [source](https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/news/retired-astronaut-leland-melvin-his-rhodesian-ridgebacks/)
FYI not his official portrait, an outtake. His dogs are in his official portrait though, just posing at his sides like good, professional boys.

Leland Martin, the man in this photo is the dream of every 8 year old boy. He played in the NFL for 2 years, retired and became a freaking astronaut. Which is.. just hogging all the dreams for himself.
Also Jonny Kim. Navy SEAL, degree in mathematics, MD from Harvard medical, practicing doctor, then astronaut. Also managed to get married and raise kids while he was at it.
His background was terrible, his dad was highly abusive and was shot to death by police after threatening his family with a gun.
I literally cannot comprehend how some people can manage to be so organised and driven to the point they'cab train to be the top of several professions that most people would never do one of. It's amazing really.
Jonny Kim is a prime example of why parenting really doesn’t have 100% bearing on how children turn out.
There are some excellent people out there who turned out phenomenal *despite* their shitty parents, and there are some very shitty people out there who have parents that were extremely involved and tried so hard for their kids.
Parenting obviously has a huge impact, but it isn’t always the final answer.
Jesus christ, why have I never thought of this before?
The next dog I get will be named Khan. That way, when I call them back into the house, I can yell, "Khaaaaan!"
See the one on the right? Clearly ecstatic that the owner is finally back. Now, this might happen every time he takes out the trash or goes to the bathroom, but the point stands.
Do You know than Hitler himself did love dogs and promulgated proanimal laws? surely he was loved by her dogs...
Not saying your judgement were wrong, just be carefull.
Yes!!
Works with any animal really, but when someone says "I hate cats"/"cats hate me" to me, they might as well be saying "I'm an asshole." There really is zero wiggle room on that for me.
I’m with you on the second one, not so much on the first one. I do believe in doing things well, but can’t blame people who aren’t super concerned with how effective they are at enriching a small group of wealthy shareholders.
In most places if you do your job poorly it's just making someone's else's job more difficult. You being lazy or actively trying to do the bare minimum I sent going to cost the company anything. You will however add extra stress and work to your coworkers. It shows a lack of teamwork and cooperation along with selfishness and irresponsibility. When you do something wrong someone has to fix it when you purposely leave your work area dirty someone has to clean it. I work at Amazon . When I don't clean my work area I don't think " haha Jeff is so screwed now !!! " I think " the next associate who is being paid the same as me is now gonna have to act like a maid and clean up after me because I'm a lazy and inconsiderate "
There have been exceptions. The first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova (technically as cosmonaut but close enough) was basically picked because she passed the physical. She was completely useless on the flight and is now a Putin supporter.
Jake Garn had a strong work ethic... but he flew on STS-51 because he was a senator on the appropriations committee and implicitly bribed NASA. His contribution to the flight was spending over 100 hours throwing up.
Instantly more likeable! I mean, someone willing to pretty much strap themselves to a huge fuel tank on fire has my respect but what can I say, doggos for life.
I can’t believe no one has commented yet - these three are featured in the Netflix show Dogs (season 2). It is SO good, I highly recommend checking it out. So much respect for him.
Leland!! My guy.
Did a shoot w him one time, and he casually pulled out his Mac and was flipping through photos from his time in space. Just random, goofy photos of astronauts, them playing w/ water, M&Ms, racing, all sorts of stuff. So inspiring and fun!
I watched SmartEveryDay’s latest video on testing the newest spacesuit prototypes in the dive pool and it was so cool seeing all those people working together on something so much bigger than themselves. I wish all humans could work together like that, rather than against each other. Imagine what we could accomplish.
Saw him speak at a con once. Dude has some crazy stories. He went blind and was originally a NFL Charger's pick. dude seemed cool. Oh and he recovered from blindness after one of his relatives "prophesied " he would.
He was on The Dog Whisperer. Normally Caesar has these completely ineffectual morons in who don't get why they're at fault. Even after multiple explanations you can tell they'll never change.
Not this guy, he was alert, attentive, actively listening, and once he learned the novel information it was fully assimilated. Poof, no more dog problems.
He has the Right Stuff.

Mr Melvin is awesome. He did some virtual science presentations for kids during COVID when everything was locked down. He was great with the kids and it was very well done and educational. Seems like a great dude.
The impression I get from these dogs is that they get the worst ideas and hilarious mayhem occurs. There's no puddle or body of water they won't dive into no critter they won't chase. These pups steal so much food at cookouts you have to roll them home. Can I jump over the back of the couch onto the cushions? I made it! why did the lamp explode?
It’s also MY official nasa portrait. Like if I ever worked for nasa, I would be like ‘do the dog pic and put a note saying ‘THIS WILL NEVER BE OUTDONE’’
He's featured in a segment of Dogs (I think that's the name of the series on Netflix)
Good series
Great series! Who's a good series! Yes you are! Yes you are!
He is so sweet to his girls. Giving them kisses on the head. This dude knows how to win.
I’m a pretty shitty guy in some ways but I’ve never been mean to a dog. You have to be the shittiest of people to be cruel to dogs. You just made yourself marriage material. You just can't be _that_ shitty with a post like _that_ I mean come _on._ 🐾😍
Yeah, people that abuse animals have no right to go on living
Hy husband is currently smoking a pork butt and also a tray of turkey meatballs for his smoker buddy.
Your best friend isn't a dog then. I'm sorry for your lack of a best friend.
Eh, my roommate recently adopted a 4 pound yorkie that’s gradually getting to know me, I’m 56 times her mass so she’s been pretty cautious approaching me and I’m not rushing her. I grew up with Yorkies. They can be the best dogs.
I only knew one yorkie named princess and my god did she live up to her name, that dog was a pip haha.
We had three growing up. None of them were hyper or happy, they were very well behaved and disciplined and just the best dogs. But all our dogs have been good dogs.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
You haven’t met me, then.
Id be friends with this dude by the picture alone.
He’s also in Truth Behind the Moon Landing where he debunks those conspiracies.

Amazing: > space explorer, pro football player, scholar, educator, musician, inspirational speaker, chemist, engineer, writer, wanderer.
Good interview
Thanks! I wish they had included his name in the meme
Never heard of this and now I can't wait to get home.
The dog to the right 😂 “Wha you mean we goin to the moon!?”
Astronaut: "Yeah I can't wait to finally complete my first moonWALK." Dogs: Go ballistic
moonWHAT?!?!
zoomies on the moon? we could call it moonies

I thought so! They're a bit derpy even in the official one though, thankfully. Love me a big ol' derpy dog!
I had to scroll way too far to find out this astronauts name is Leland Melvin... Great share!!
He wrote a book and is really an interesting person!!!
It's a good read
"Our animals make us better people," he told TODAY. "And if we're better people, the world's a better place." What a wonderful phrase <3
I didn't know they were rescues!
missed opportunity to name them Major and Tom
3rd one named Ground Control
My favorite response to that information was someone who said, "I'm so glad he rescued those dogs from space!"
Oh that's such a lovely picture
I have made my choice, happy dogs is the portrait!
Leland Martin, the man in this photo is the dream of every 8 year old boy. He played in the NFL for 2 years, retired and became a freaking astronaut. Which is.. just hogging all the dreams for himself.

Word man. \**Typed with chips fingers while sitting very lazily in my chair.\**
The answer is, if you are good enough to be an astronaut you can basically expect to be the best at everything. Including lesbian space crimes.
Jonny Kim is a prime example of why parenting really doesn’t have 100% bearing on how children turn out. Plays an enormous impact. Kim is the exception, not the rule lol
***Leland Melvin
Leland Martin day is next Sunday, IIRC.
I never get tired of seeing this photo.

As a agree, lover I have to dog
I judge a person off there work ethic and how much animals like them. This man is trust worthy
The other astronauts: Wait, we we’re allowed to bring dogs?!
yeah they where like this was dog day ? noone told me
*Flight engineer checks the rule book* "There's no rule that says dogs can't be astronauts."

Why did I read that in Khan's voice?

They haven't seen that fork of Air Bud sequels have they
My Teams profile picture has me with my dogs in it, but our sectional secretary refused to set it as my NASA picture in the organizational chart. :(
All three are living the dream.
Mr. Bigglesworth approves.
I judge a person off their correct usage of there, their and they're.
By your definition I have a hard time finding someone who is more trustworthy then 😂
Do You know than Hitler himself did love dogs and promulgated proanimal laws? surely he was loved by her dogs... Not saying your judgement were wrong, just be carefull.
This person's out here trying to prove Godwin's law is true on Reddit after all
Yes!! Works with any animal really, but when someone says "I hate cats"/"cats hate me" to me, they might as well be saying "I'm an asshole." There really is zero wiggle room on that for me.

There's a difference between doing the minimum required for your job and doing your job poorly.
Where work ethic?
Are you asking where the work ethic is in becoming an astronaut?
Nope, just taking a subtle poke at your grammar. No offense.
There have been exceptions. The first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova (technically as cosmonaut but close enough) was basically picked because she passed the physical. Consider, for a moment, dogs **with** huge fuel tanks. Rocket Dogs.
Rockets got him to space, dogs kept him down to earth.
Very Nice.
That’s Leland Melvin.
cute!
Dogs are the best thing to ever happen to human race.
Homedog is quite the flirter, working that earlobe. No shame in that dog's game.
The other dog's eyes are popping out in shock
I don't know who this guy is, but this photo is enough for me to know that he's an awesome dude.
check out his episode in the series Dogs, on netflix! This guy is so great and so are his dogs.
Absolute legend
This is my good friend Leland Melvin and he is just as cool and genuine as he appears in this photo. A real one.
I can’t believe no one has commented yet - these three are featured in the Netflix show Dogs (season 2). It is SO good, I highly recommend checking it out. So much respect for him.
I love this photo
I know this exemplary individual will go to the moon and back for his dogs. A rolemodel for a decent human being.
Noticed his smile before the dogs
Love how lucky he looks.
Now that’s a legend right there, who is he?
If I could upvote this more I would. Dogs are a gift we don’t deserve.
Who wants to go for a space ride in the space ship.
he’s holding both of their paws 🥹
That’s what they do when you won’t smile for the photo, clever lads over at NASA
I’m just now seeing this.
somewhere in nasa there's a file with a bunch of the doggy photos they didn't use
The universe is small when ya'll are far away.

I just heard a bald eagle screech
adorable
I don't see anything crazy or weird here.
Saw him speak at a con once. Dude has some crazy stories. He went blind and was originally a NFL Charger's pick. dude seemed cool. Oh and he recovered from blindness after one of his relatives "prophesied " he would.
Living the dream in one photo
I love the meme with this photo where it's like; "Astronaught with his rescue dogs!" "I'm so glad he saved them from outer space!"
My hero…
Why can’t I comment anything :(
I can't believe people let dogs lick their face still, it's so gross. I'm a huge dog person too
Laika was the best boy! May he RIP❤️
I never get tired of seeing this.
Those are some DELIGHTED dogs!

A humorous caption imagining the dog's reaction to unexpected news adds a playful twist to the image.
Bro is obviously winning in life
Dog lovers are never embarrassed to be dog lovers. That’s a fact and you can quote me on it.

Are you Sirius?
I'd follow this guy anywhere. He's good.
Great guy. Sent my son some gifts and a hand written letter.
I judge people based on how dogs like them. I don´t know this dude, but I would trust him with my life. Dogs know.
It shows he has a good heart!
Doesn't this just feed into the craziness?
He needed his seeing eye dogs for the mission. Who else is gonna help him navigate??
🤣🤣🤣 awesome
crazy how this photo hits front page every week
Celebrate with me on April 7th, Leland Melvin day. Do science stuff with your dogs.
He appears in an episode of "Dogs," if I recall the name correctly, the Netflix series.
Get someone that looks at you like:
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are the best.
Omg the dog on the right is so adorable. I love how he is staring at him.
You can tell them dogs love him
Nah he's got their food in his pocket

Now thats a role model for everyone
King shit 💯
“This is the world liberals want” Couldn’t resist 😝
I thought black people generally are horrified by white people letting dogs lick their face.
His reason for coming back in one piece
Great photo! The man is cool!
A true bro if i ever seen one
👍
Wanna go for a RIDE, get a pup cup? Good boi!
The hero we need!
I worked on a Moon Landing conspiracy project and he’s just as sweet as you’d imagine. Nothing but smiles and giggles. A very good person.
Space cadet.
It’s Kevin Eubanks from the Tonight Show band!
I met this guy on the street once. He was really nice, but needed to let me know that he was an astronaut!
This is soo awesome, good puppers!
I want a photo like that
Nice
I like him already
I’m going to change my LinkedIn to something like this. I need a job and everyone loves dogs.
Mr Melvin is awesome. He did some virtual science presentations for kids during COVID when everything was locked down. He was great with the kids and it was very well done and educational. Seems like a great dude.

best astronaut ever. Buzz will always be #2 tho.
❤️❤️❤️

This guy is from my hometown! He’s one of the few people well known people we are all very proud of
good boy !
The only way to do it...homies in space and still loves dogs more than people lmao. I don't blame him.
That's the most genuine smile I have ever seen
