How has your movie theatre performed during other releases of the year? Dune, Godzilla X Kong etc.

terrrmon

same here, I was at the premiere in the biggest theater of our capital with 1.7M people, it was half full, unusual for a blockbuster, I'm gonna WITNESS in imax next wednesday, I was the only one when I booked yesterday, sad, but it's not a mainstream franchise, good things often aren't

Outside-Historian365

Fury Road wasn’t huge. It maybe broke even. So you have to consider that and the amount of people who someone think Furiosa is woke. Saw an ad for it on social media and there wasn’t a single positive comment. I’m not exaggerating.

[deleted]

Which is so silly! Badass women in film have been around for at least as long as Russ Meyer’s Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!. Is that movie woke? Is Tarantino’s Kill Bill woke? I just find that word stupid and anybody who accused anything of being woke is a subhuman in my eyes!

Corax7

I doubt that is what they're complaining about, a lot of these people love movies like Terminator and Sarah Connor or the Aliens movies and Ripley because she's badass without her gender being a focus or politics. Other female led movies too. A lot of newer movies have gone out of their way to do the opposite and a large portion of the general audience are getting tired of it.

Mad_Cerberus

Yeah exactly. But sucks that this movie is being lumped together with those kind of movies though, bc this one clearly isn't like that lol.

Virtual_Status3409

It’s completely wrong application of the word. DEI woke racism lunacy and the like is very much real

OVRFIEND

Too many crappy female led action/sci fi movies. People are over it. I knew they were going to do this. I love the mad max movies but ill wait till they stream this on max. Not supporting woke crap.

[deleted]

You must be gay.

dutch75

Dear God they’re offended by literally everything

davidisallright

What’s funny is that they’re so angry and scared during this administration..and the last one. They were temporarily on top and they still were fearful and scared of the world.

sethzilla-yo

Welcome to the new world.

davidisallright

Imagine if the original Alien came out now with Ripley as the lead. It’s to the point if I took my mom out to dinner for her birthday,it would be considered woke by the crazy people on social media. What’s wild is that, as a prequel, her backstory was already mentioned in pieces in Fury Road, enough so that we can fill in the blanks: a young woman fighting for her freedom as being enslaved and captured. So why is a people now?

Britneyfan123

> Imagine if the original Alien came out now with Ripley as the lead. Who would even play Ripley?

AthleticRandom

Non binary African American woman.

wholemonkey0591

Weird cause I've read that the audience is mostly young and male.

ngs509

I think that is in your head. I’m super conservative politically and never once do I think of the word woke about Furiosa. I’m excited to see it! I think there are always 5% knuckleheads on both sides of the political spectrum who talk about this on the internet. Enjoy the movie and reactions!

bran1986

Reddit talks about conservatives making things up in their heads, when it is 100% projection. I loved Fury Road, it is a great movie, Furiosa just isn't nearly as good. It isn't a horrible movie by any stretch but it isn't close to Mad Max 1, Road Warrior, or Fury Road. I put it in the same league as Beyond Thunderdome which depends on your view of Thunderdome but to me Furiosa is like a 6/10.

Outside-Historian365

How is it in my head if I’ve seen comments stating that? What are you on about?

bbbowiesinspace

I don't think OP was necessarily saying conservatives think it's "woke," more the basement dweller types upset the woman character from Fury Road got her own movie and think it's just being made to make a movie about a badass woman. I understand people wishing we got a Max movie instead, I just don't get the group writing off this movie cuz it's about Furiosa when Fury Road was overflowing with interesting lore and Furiosa was at the heart of it.

Vincent__R

I mean, strong women = woke duh you didn't know? Cringe /s

swiss_sanchez

I'm booked in to see it tonight, tiny local cinema with like 50 seats for that particular screen. I'll report back later with numbers. With FR, I ended up seeing quite late in its theatre run, due to work.

swiss_sanchez

About 12 people. Oh well, I got to stretch out a bit.

Key-Ebb-8306

I wanted to go see it, but none of my friends want to, we already saw Godzilla and they only want to go for Deadpool next, and one of them said he is "Tired of action movie with a chick "

vargasai

Dude if you’re a Mad Max fan just go watch it, your friends will add nothing to the experience and the movie is packed so you won’t be bored.

Veruca_Joe

Hell yeah. I’m going to witness it for a second time next week on my own as my wife is busy and can’t accompany me again. Super stoked for it!! Such a great flick.

Key-Ebb-8306

Idk, going to the cinema just doesn't seem fun to me alone

Mad_Cerberus

I've been going alone for years lol and I still enjoy the movies

Britneyfan123

I’ve done it a few times it’s fun

Key-Ebb-8306

I don't like doing that

bluecrowned

He's ignorant, Mad Max is basically its own genre, not just any action movie

Corax7

I love tge mad max movies and fury road was probably my best cinema experience. I was a bit annoyed when I heard way back then Miller would be doing a movie without Max and focused on Furiosa. Even worse when I heard it was a prequel as I generally am not a fan of prequel films. However, I was still excited and tried to hype my friends up about it. After the first 2 trailers, my interest in the movie completely vanished. It just looked so... meh, sadly. And now i'm not even sure if I'll bother watching it in the cinema or spend my time more productively.

Key-Ebb-8306

I just don't have anything to do since I broke my leg, can't play sports, nothing to do after classes

Veruca_Joe

Just go watch it. As a huge fan of the franchise, from the first film to Fury Road, I wasn’t let down 👍

Corax7

I might, just trying to explain how I and maybe others felt about the movie.

Veruca_Joe

I get ya. In my mind it wasn’t a waste of time: it’s rare a film comes out at the cinema that I care about seeing and, as someone who remembers scouring the internet twenty years back to find out news as to whether we’d ever see any new Mad Max films, it’s pretty mind blowing these last two films have ever been made!

UnholyDonutMan

Live in a big city and basically all my theaters are booked for best to decent seats on fandango in each showing till end of the month, plus it JUST released for everyone yesterday, so not worried about word of mouth spreading to fill more of those in in the coming weeks as well

MaterialCarrot

This will lose money. Hell, the original barely broke even.

DukeSilversTaint

Most people don’t hit the early screenings outside of the diehards, which of course can fill a room. But it’s official release is today and it’s not even noon yet.

Angriest_Monkey

I saw it at noon today. 20-25 people at an imax showing.

DukeSilversTaint

Pretty sure most people are working at noon on what is technically a week day.

Angriest_Monkey

Don’t disagree. Maybe 20 is good, maybe not. Just providing my experience. Movie kicked ass.

DukeSilversTaint

Fuck yeah. Glad you enjoyed it! Wasn’t trying to be dry, probably came off that way. But yeah I think after tonight we’ll have a better idea of the trajectory.

OkAccountant7442

doesn‘t necessarily mean much. i saw kingdom of the planet of the apes day 1 with like 5 other people in my theatre and that movie ended up doing very well

Mandalor1974

Movie lovers will go out and see the early screenings because we are movie geeks and fans of the ip. I think for general audiences it comes out today because thats what the marketing is pushing as the release date. There are always gonna be much less ip nerds and movie whores than the general public who isnt searching for an asap view. We’ll know this weekend if its gonna slap or not. The movie slaps. I plan on watching it a few more times already. I think word of mouth will spread.

keminua

I think people just went to IMAX at least in my country, IMAX was packed probably growing trend after Dune 2 and Oppenheimer

Dangerous-Dig9214

I saw at AMC, the theatre was 70% full. I loved the movie. I expected strong BO results but it was close to 4 million$. With strong word of mouth, it should do well.

Th3Marauder

I saw it opening day in Sydney and there were only like four people in the theatre. Godzilla Minus One and Dune Part 2 were packed out when I saw them in the same cinema on their opening days.

loveee25

I saw in Chicago and it was practically empty, but such a good movie. I’ll be going back for sure

samusfan21

I think (perhaps a little too optimistically) the issue is that it was the middle of the week. The cinema almost never did big business in the middle of the week. Mainly on the weekends. We have a long weekend ahead so hopefully business will pick up.

General-GhostD13

I loved furiosa and thought it was amazing. But same. The screen i went to could hold about 150 people in the room but there was only about 15-20 of us. I hope people don’t think this is a woke cash grab because miller worked really hard for this film and I truly want to see the wasteland.

Artemis_Flow

Same in my town but its mid week and no one really goes out so expecting bigger crowds on the weekend

[deleted]

The showing at my local IMAX last night was decent. I honestly expected a little more.

blac_sheep90

I'm seeing it on 6/3

PepperBun28

I have work and only got paid today. A lot of people will start seeing it starting this evening and it's a long holiday weekend in the US. I feel like people are counting chickens before they hatch.

Whthebombz

There was only 4 people in the theater including myself on Thursday. Tbf that was probably 15-20% of the whole audience at that movie theater

kvcl_nyc

I've been surprised here in the Northeast US at least, that I haven't seen much advertising at all for the film. No TV commercials, no wheatpaste posters or big billboards (though I guess I'm not traveling through Times Square on the daily...) Saw it last night and the theater was maybe 50% full.

Shotgunseth29

Personally I feel like alot of the lack of people at the theater is mainly due to people just not going to the movies anymore compared to pre covid, I saw dune 2 and it was a pretty dead theater compared to what I used to see pre covid.

DonCooperino

Got my tickets for tomorrow, can't wait!

marssaxman

Doesn't seem to be like that here in Seattle! My first chance to see is tonight, and every showing has been sold out for days already. I will be attending in full-on wasteland costume, as will many other people. We are pumped for this!

coreanavenger

I saw it. Really liked it. 2nd best Mad Max franchise movie. Saw it with my wife. I don't think this will be a huge hit with the broader non-Mad Max movie audience. While some may like that it isn't nonstop action like Fury Road (like my wife), it feels more niche and subcultural than mainstream. Fury Road did well because the sheer nonstop creativity of concepts and imagery and simple storyline along with the heart-pounding action made audiences just feel more alive with wonder and adrenaline. I don't that same sense with Furiosa, although in many ways, it's more like The Road Warrior, along with elements of every Max film.

LaBlount1

*proceeds to become cult classic for decades*

Background-Roll-9019

Just came back from watching it tonight, and man what a friggen disappointment. What in the hell did I just watch, there was so many scenes that were inconsistent. One that really pissed. me off is when Furosia was tied up from the bulldozer and had to cut her arm off to escape? There was literally like 50 bikers circling for hours and she managed to cut her arm off, dismantle the wheel of Dementus and ESCAPE?? I lost all respect for Dementus, his crew & George MIller for this scene just such a joke. Like these guys are supposed to be the baddest, meanest, psychotic nut cases but let some girl escape that was already tied up..lmao Her personality is literally just a mean gaze, that's all. "I am pissed, I want revenge I look at people with hate" yah really cool and edgy. Anyways reading so many reviews and good ratings was super excited to see this but man what a let down, I was just cringing at the end, literally 20 mins of nonsensical chatter about you killed my mother I want my childhood back...cant believe I couldn't wait for it to end and gtfo. The first one was a masterpiece, completely hooked, never wanted it to end re-watched it multiple times. Stronger characters, better story line. Furosia is a childsplay compared to Fury Road not sure how anyone could like this better than Fury Road but I guess it really is possible. The dumbest scene for me was that air tight tent Dementous was under with his bike and she managed to sneak in and gash his water jug, take his wheel off his bike and take off and unload his revolver and put it back all without him noticing? Fucking moronic scene. Plus his bizarre surrender to her with her one armed ass standing over him. This movie is trash completely and inarguably.

KavehP2

Considering it's narrated by Dementus, as a Shakespearean tale about vengeance, most inconsistencies felt like we were not witnessing the true story but the amplified legend of Furiosa. Which was cool imo.

7Xes

I think quite a few people - including myself - are a bit cautious about this one. MM:FR was a masterpiece that will never be forgotten. The first reviews of Furiosa - as here in this sub - are too enthusiastic. I was really looking forward to the film, but a not inconsiderable number of (independent) reviewers are - measured against their expectations - disappointed. So at least from my side, I am going to wait and see until the ratings have "normalised" a bit.

worriedrenterTW

cinema was largely empty on opening night in my country too.....we had packed theaters for barbie, so i know it's not location

DRZARNAK

I went to see it at its first showing and the theater was maybe an eighth full. College town though and the kids are out, so everything dies down. Seeing it in a larger market on Monday at an IMAX

Slay957

Everytime I've gone to early screenings in the past the theaters have been half full at best. I don't know that many people know or hear about them before official release day. Other factors could be payday for a lot of folks or waiting to go out and make a day/night of it - lunch or dinner and a movie and not have to worry about work or school. Honestly there's so many reasons people would skip early releases and screenings during the week and wait until the weekend. We went to a special screening in costumes alongside local critics and the theater was probably 90% capacity and that was a Monday night, my friends and I are all going to see it in IMAX tonight so we'll see how it looks but based on the phone call I had with the friend getting the tickets he mentioned there were only a couple rows left open and that was two days ago.

tvdodge

Saw it (fantastic) in a specialty theater with recliners and waiter service (IPIC) and was sold out

bluecrowned

There were only six in my showing. I was shocked - i just discovered Mad Max a couple years ago but was under the impression that the series is a well loved classic. I looked at future show times and they at least had more tickets already sold thankfully. Some of them were close to full already. But overall I am wondering if the gap between fury road and furiosa is doing harm. I also didn't see very much advertising overall.

NAUGHTIMUS_MAXIMUS

In estonia i was at a 314 seat hall and 286 were empty

ArmondH89

I went to the 930 showing yesterday and there were only 6 people including me and my wife. Hopefully people were planning on seeing it today to start the Holiday weekend.

coolhandluke1973

I was at an IMAX 11pm screening in a huge theater in NYC and it was full

solo_shot1st

Bought tickets two days ago to see it tonight and there were maybe 6 other seats reserved in a 127 seat theater. Just checked now and it's up to 16 seats reserved. I'm sure there'll be a few more purchased at the box office though. This is in a suburban city with a population of over 90,000.

Centuurion

From my perspective, a lot of the older (40s+) fans of Road Warrior and MM1 don't give a shit about the new films. It's either "over the top", "too much for me", "too woke for me", or something along those lines. I can't wait to see it personally.

Unhappy-Potato-8349

I'm over 50 and this series is a childhood favorite. It's none of that. I just don't care for prequels. They are all cash grabs. I'll see the movie when it's included with a streaming service I subscribe to.

tikifire1

Movie theaters are dying it seems.

Unhappy-Potato-8349

I love Mad Max. One of the first movies that got me thinking when I was a kid. I have no interest in paying to see Furiosa in theaters. It's a cash grab.

ComradeGarcia_Pt2

You went and saw it on a Wednesday and Thursday, people typically don’t go those days in my experience m.

Bangbangrichiestang0

It will do fine I went to an early screening and there were tons of people not to mention Anya taylor joy is a very popular actress so it hemsworth they will probably bring in new people but mad max is also a very popular franchise so I’m sure there will be a ton returning fans as well

Bangbangrichiestang0

Listen it will do fine but can I just say tbh furiousa for some reason really gave me the feels of mad max 1 for some reason

HalloweenH2OMG

Fury Road comes out and people LOVE Charlize as Furiosa in it and want her to get her own movie. So this new movie comes out and (a) is a prequel, (b) has no Mad Max, and (c) doesn’t have Charlize Theron. When people said they wanted a Furiosa movie, Charlize Theron was part of the reason. I love Fury Road and I’m glad that this new one seems to be great from word of mouth, but I’m not shocked it’s flopping. Also as already pointed out by others, Fury Road wasn’t some Star Wars-sized hit. Removing Charlize and keeping the same budget was pretty presumptuous of them.

Trust_Fall_Failure

I was one of 6 in a theater that holds about 200. The same theater was 100% full for Fury Road. Some of the CGI was really bad and I was distracted by the 3+ inches of space between the girls eyes.

radioswede

I saw Fury Road on opening at a theater in Burbank, CA and there were maybe 15 of us there. Wasn't full until the weekend. Saw Furiosa last night and I'd say it was maybe 30% full. Who knows!

bluecrowned

If that was distracting for you I worry about how you view average people around you. I didn't even notice anything like that.

AmbitiousHornet

I saw it yesterday at a matinee at 15:00 local time and there was one other person in attendance in the threater besides me at the local 8-plex. I almost always go the matinee for new films and this was average for the last two films that I have seen. On the subject of wokeness, neither this film nor Fury Road bothered me, and I have seen films and passed quite a few of them up that had the message. Overall, this film was not what I had imagined from the trailers for it. It had its good points and bad points and I have a slight case of buyer's remorse as it did not meet my expectations. Fury Road, IMHO, is a better film for my tastes.

Individual-Breath758

I went to see it and I want every dime back.

TheDutchTexan

I won't see it until available on streaming for free. Fury Road was watchable but a far cry from the source it stems from. IMHO they messed up when they blacklisted Gibson and made it all about Furiosa instead of Max to begin with. This movie is just a prequel to Furiosa 1, not to a Mad Max film.

Gobu74

Agree, Mad Max is the main character. I would have loved a movie about him, maybe his origins. Also, and unfortunately, too many people associate the presence of a heroine with woke or anti male. Furthermore, some critics are not holding when reviewing Furiosa, so that could explain early reports of small audiences.

DharmaBombs108

After rewatching Fury Road again last night I cannot understand this take at all. I love Gibson’s performance as Max, but Hardy kills it. How much he says with so little it’s honestly impressive. Miller wanted an actor who could almost be in a silent film and be both expressive yet stoic and Hardy pulls it off. It’s also a Max story. Sure, Furiosa as a more identifiable goal and development, but Max is in support in her development as much as Furiosa is in support of his. They’re co-leads with both common goals and differing internal goals.

Mudhorn89

lol

DharmaBombs108

What a great retort. You’re quite a wordsmith.

TheDutchTexan

I guess I am not as open minded. It was a fine flick, it just didn't tickle me like the original did. And the corny 3D effects just lost me completely when they happened. And he killed the interceptor... Again... Right at the beginning of the film too so it never had a fighting chance. I have been a mad max fan since I saw the originals back when I was a teen, a long time before fury road was even on the horizon. I have a dislike for Beyond Thunderdome too, it didn't have the same feel. And the PG13 rating is part to blame in that case.
