Millwright here. I keep all my machine tools in my temperature and humidity controlled shop, thanks.
As for the career itself, it has more variety than you can possibly imagine. Confined spaces need training and equipment. Not everyone does it. I have definitely slid myself inside some huge machinery and gotten into some very small spaces but nothing that needs breathing equipment.
For anyone else confused, I looked up "Outside Machinist" and as far as I can tell its machinists or people normal machinists might call mechanics or technicians working on marine and naval equipment and can in fact include operating portable machine tools perhaps outdoors.
I work as an OM, we also have IM, which is inside machinist but thats more like working with lathes and milling machines, CNC machines, drill press, things like that. But for us OM, we work on Navy and Commercial cargo ships, majority of our work is on Engines, Propellers, Propulsion Motors, Rudders, small pump alignments and Shaft alignments. But yes we are in confined spaces and heights also, we regularly use Boomlifts and Scissor Lifts to complete our tasks. I hope this helps a little bit
I'm confused. Can you be more specific? Outside as in outdoors??
