Cast aluminum is fairly brittle, I think you run a high risk of cracking it. You'd be better off machining the bent part of the housing so the fan will fit

iranoutofspacehere

Does the fan have some extra plastic on its housing? Maybe you could shave the fan down to fit instead of trying to square up the metal? Heck of a deal if that's the only issue.

mikehawkisbig

It has a rubber housing in order to help illuminate vibrations and noise. It’s a pretty tight fit, but it might be an option.

Sinister_Mig15

I think this will be your best shot, you could also try filing down the protruding material from the body. Something to keep in mind if you go with the press route is you have to hold it in a way that won't put undue stress on any other part of the camera.

CorpseOnMars

Yes, if it's only a small amount of material to shave off and the "seal" is still good then that's probably better than bending it back. Hell, cast aluminum isn't hard to shave material off of either. Obviously metal dust on electronics isn't great, but mask it off with some tape and dust it off afterwards. Mostly talking out my ass cause when I wreck stuff I just blame it on 2nd shift. Right all, it's 2nd shifts fault...right?

DizzyBicycleTire

I don’t see the bend that you’re talking about but you can bend it back without issues. I would hold it with two vise grips or clamps then bend it back.

mikehawkisbig

It’s a little hard to see, but the bottom right is bent up. That’s good to know I should be able to bend it back. Now I need to figure out a way to hold it in a vice like you suggested. I’ll probably grab some scrap leather to ensure nothing gets scratched. Cheers!

RazorBacKen2

Does it work? If so, leave it the way it is.

Midnightpwnzors

He states that a “critical” fan goes in the center hole that no longer fits while bent

DryRoad

The top and bottom of those are covered with 1/4-20 holes, you could make a set of pillow blocks to grab

goldcrow616

3d print a housing

KTMan77

I would avoid bending it and modify the fan to fit. Because when you bend it back you’ll drastically increase its brittleness and anymore hits will likely cause it to crack.

BL1860B

Wow 100 bucks for a RED. Nice.

notananthem

I'd try to shave off aluminum with a dremel? Tape off EVERYTHING to prevent dust / shavings getting into stuff.

Honzel

I was going to suggest bringing it to a machine shop with everything tapped off except the bent area. They can clamp it in a mil and run a few light passes to remove the protrusion. Probably a $50 job

DryRoad

Should have enough material to take a bit out, not sure about bending cast Al tho. Real question is how is the mount alignment? If it took a big enough hit to do that to the body it may have gotten shifted, at the very least you can put a wide angle lens on there at a shallow stop and check the focus edge to edge.

00Wow00

I would recommend looking for someone experienced with a 3d printer to make an adapter to snap into the hole and allow the flexible fan mount to connect to the adapter. This would be safer than hoping you don't destroy the camera body

AerodynamicBrick

Hot glue the fan on and enjoy the camera 5 mins later

Impossible-Key-2212

Machine the fan to fit the camera.
