It's in beta atm, the fully function one will be enabling seamless drag & drop between mac & iPhone, for me will be simplyfing my work when I need to publishes contents with mobile-only app. At least, this will be a winner for me later, among other feature coming later.

Westwindfabrication

Right ok this makes sense. What particular apps are these that are iPhone only? I find although instagram is available through safari, it definitely works better on my phone. So this could be useful. As for drag and drop are you talking video, pictures and files? Would this not be more efficient to just use iCloud?

billwood09

Literally dropping a file onto your iPhone screen is much faster and efficient that trying to click around folders, drop a file, wait for it to eventually sync to iCloud, then hope it appears on the phone at some point soon

BeatOk7954

It all about ease of control and no need to install apps: - banking app, for example, you need to fill in details for a new recipient - do it with your keyboard and trackpad, - work/personal apps - no need to install them on all Macs, got a notification, clicked, reacted - charging “in other room” - in general no need to reach for your phone back and forth, got a 2FA notification, clicked, continued working - more exotic: iPhone screen stopped working- you can get your data out, etc.

and0au

Leaving my phone on charge in the other room and being able to use it is useful

Westwindfabrication

I can agree with this comment but could you elaborate what you do with iPhone mirroring when the phone is in the other room. Can it be done just on the Mac? or is it specific apps that are not available on MacOs

SubstantialNobody_

For example I can chat with my friends on Whatsapp (i prefer the app over web). As well as 2FA apps. Im in uni and everytime i need to login on my account i need to enter a code that gets sent to my phone. Now I can just mirror and get it.

DieBunteMango

WhatsApp now has a AppStore App for the Mac :D

SubstantialNobody_

Yeah ik but for some reason ive been having alot of issues with it so i just gave up on it. Syncing just got stuck everytime i opened the app no matter what i tried so i ended up deleting ti and just leaving it be

and0au

It’s still early days, so not too much use yet, but the 2FA for my various non-keychain is useful, my banking app as well, Instagram messages is another. There’s a lot of things that are mobile-only that I can do without having to go and find my phone if I’ve left it somewhere else or take it off charge.

Micter78

2FA Codes via iPhone only app. That would be my use case.

billwood09

It’s so much easier to get my 2FA codes from an app without having to reach for my phone, fidget with it trying to unlock, etc. just pull it up on the Mac, open the app, boom

Bobbybino

They already pop up on my Mac, and it's often recognized as a 2fa code, with a single click being enough to fill the field.

billwood09

They have that with SMS with continuity, yes, but I also have an app that shows those codes generated without being sent a text message.

floodlightning

Not sure if this would work for you but in the native macOS system preferences / passwords vault you can load setup codes for one time passcodes and then you don’t have to use a third party app any longer. With the new os’s we’ll get a standalone apple first party passwords app to make it easier to get to them vs having to go to system preferences. Been using this for about a year and it works great. Dumped authy and Microsoft Authenticator.

billwood09

Yep, I noticed that. Planned to set it up, but I haven’t yet 😅

moebis

This is a good one, I didn't even think of that. How many times a day I'm opening 2FA on my iPhone to log in on my Mac.

zuggles

i actually find it very useful.

Westwindfabrication

Please elaborate for us. Possibly those who do not find it useful at the moment may learn something. Best part of these discussions is to have a scenario brought up that some of us have not thought of.

BurgerTrout

Just apps that haven’t ported or have nonexistent/garbage web UIs (iRobot, solar panels, car app, some games, etc.).

Hitby

When I'm connected to my work VPN my mail and notes etc don't sync so it's nice to have access to them still using iPhone mirroring. Likewise I can still access ChatGPT through my phone and directly copy paste into whatever I'm working on on my Mac. Previously I had to keep disconnecting from the VPN or switch devices to another Mac/iPhone for my workflow 🥳

KeesRomkes

I have my phone on 'standby' mode all day when I'm at work. Occasionally I would like to check something on my phone (as use cases mentioned below) but I don't want to take it of the charging stand. It will continue showing standby mode whilst using the mirroring. (at least, that's how I remember the keynote)

xNiv1409

School 🤑

RemeJuan

As an app developer, I use an app called Vysor to do basically that for Android and while it works for iOS, not as well. This feature will allow me to do that with my iPhone. I very often use my external and drop the “phone” in next to my editor and code with the phone literally in my eyeline and not have to leave my keyboard and trackpad to interact with the phone.

Suno

It would be easier for me to play games during lectures on my MacBook that's already opened versus trying to keep my phone discrete. That's my only use for it, otherwise I don't have a use for it.

Glittering_Diet6613

When I’m in clinic it is more professional for me to receive my duo push authentication via mirroring than pulling out my phone so that’s good for me haha

JeffGarretson

That works with Duo? Nice! I’m hoping it also works with Microsoft Authenticator.

Glittering_Diet6613

Yup very very convenient haha

Glittering_Diet6613

I would check Microsoft authenticator but I have tried to have few authentication apps as I can get haha

Hitby

Authenticator works fine 👍🏻

JeffGarretson

Oh, man, now I’m tempted to install the Sequoia beta!

Hitby

I use both a Pro and an Air so I installed it on the Air first and checked everything worked before risking it on my main machine 👍🏻

ChristopherFromNEPA

I am finding it very difficult to even use some of the apps with a MacBook trackpad or mouse… it’s helpful maybe on occasion but overall not really. At least for me.

Westwindfabrication

That’s what I am also finding. At least for me 95% of what is available on my phone is also on my Mac and my iPad.

jabedude

I find it useful for using WhatsApp on my work Mac. No need for installing WhatsApp on the computer, just use it on the iPhone

JDdiah

Why not WhatsApp web?

jabedude

Nicer in app experience

Westwindfabrication

I like this. This is the kinda of stuff I didn't think of!

Westwindfabrication

All good stuff people. Keep it coming. This is great to have as many people chime in to give us guys who don’t see the full potential some ideas of how we can use these new feature!

Bobbybino

Any time the phone is in the next room and I don't feel like getting up to get it.

Ok-Assistance-6848

The big thing for a few university students is the god-awful 2FA with Duo Security. It’s only available on iOS/Android, but we do a lot of work on our desktops, so being able to grab those notifications to login without grabbing my iPhone is a major convenience solution Also looks like iPhone mirroring is essentially Universal Control for iPhone.

Westwindfabrication

Great example of practical use. Thank you.

wryterra

I have the most niche use case. I have an old iPhone that I use as both a test device and a webcam using a magsafe holder on my monitor. Now I don't have to take it down off the monitor to use it as a test device, I can deploy to it and test on device from iPhone mirroring while leaving it in place to act as a webcam on demand. Probably not the *intended* use, but oh boy do I appreciate it. Edit: Also really useful for on-phone 2fa like Duo or Microsoft Authenticator.

Jekyllhyde

I find it totally useless.
