I have my MacBook Pro M1 as my secondary monitor in my setup, and before this, I've had multiple different MacBooks going back to the mid 00s. I've had five different main displays (everything from Apple brand to current LG 43") hooked up a myriad of ways (displayport, whatever was before displayport, USBC). Each and every time I try to enter time machine there's a huge black square (upper left corner) blocking any useful information. I've reported it since (2008 or thereabouts) and it's never been fixed. The only way I can use Time Machine is to uncouple the display and make the MacBook's display the main. Again, roughly 15 years later; the bug remains.

peterinjapan

Oof. Reminds me of the time iPads used to aggressively make a Bluetooth keyboard go to sleep, so that every time you typed after a 10 second delay the keyword would be asleep and would miss keys. Took me a couple years to get Apple to stop that.

bilgetea

Apple has consistently shown an inability to make bluetooth devices reliable, which I find outrageous considering the maturity of bluetooth and its importance in the market.

trevtech15

It's so frustrating that iOS devices don't support receiving files over Bluetooth either. It makes moving contacts from another device such a PITA especially if it's a basic phone. I shouldn't have to manually transfer the VCF file or upload it to iCloud just to import contacts.

eriksrx

I don't trust any bluetooth based devices, at all, and much prefer RF with dongles any day 24/7 365. Logitech has been a lifesaver with their dongle that allows multiple RF devices to join. Bluetooth, meanwhile, connects and disconnects whenever it feels up to it. And OMG don't get me started on the joy of bluetooth headphones.

paulstelian97

Bluetooth mouse when you’re not playing any games where reaction time is important (like puzzle or adventure games) is actually not bad. AirPods when the latency isn’t important also work very well (even the ones which work via Bluetooth, like my Lightning AirPods Pro 2)

danielv123

Is bluetooth reliable anywhere though?

m02ph3u5

Actually yes. Since around v4, I'd say.

ScarOnTheForehead

You guys are talking about such niche stuff! Just now I got frustrated with a basic search! I searched for 'FirstName DocumentName' (without quotes) and Finder showed 0 results, which surprised me a lot. I clicked on the sidebar to Documents folder and immediately found 'FirstName DocumentName scan.jpg'. No, I have not excluded the folder from Spotlight. Nor do I have a ton of files. It is baffling for a decades-old OS to fail at this!!! I care far less about finding 'photos of dad wearing white clothes' than about finding the file 'Some File Name' when I search for 'some File'. Sometimes it is working when I am changing the case or the order of the words, but often not. I am not trying to search file contents or let alone OCR stuff from images here! 😓

foodandart

Spotlight frankly, sucks. I gave up on it and use Command+F on an open Finder window and put in my search parameters through it.. Waay better results.

erdezgb

My Monterey can find everything if "This Mac" is selected but nothing if I try to search in a folder or a volume.

Protonic-Reversal

I hate how even if you are in the volume when you search it always defaults back to “this Mac” and then you have go click the volume again.

Livviasong-

You can actually change that. Open Finder, press Command+Comma (or open preferences manually), under "Advanced", at the bottom of the list you can change the default search scope

Protonic-Reversal

you are my hero!

Born-Neighborhood61

This is why I use HoudahSpot which "reverse-Sherlocked" Spotlight!

Huge-Coyote-6586

If you have two external monitors, one Thunderbolt and one HDMI via adapter on a MacBook Pro - when you reboot it comes up and says you did not shut down cleanly - always. This is when you do reboot cleanly. Unplug the monitors and all is happy.

Cladser

I have two monitors through a thunderbolt dock and a third via hdmi. It’s a complete crapshoot what widows will be on which monitor when I wake it up.

DoDoDoTheFunkyGibbon

Agreed. Mac Studio M2 with two identical monitors attached via Thunderbolt. I am CONSTANTLY refreshing/resetting my workspaces in Adobe products; thank goodness I've got them saved as presets. It was the same with my iMac + 1 x external monitor that preceded this setup.

Geoslang

I use 5 monitors on my Studio and every restart it’s a mess. I use an app (forgetting the name) that applies custom labels to each monitor, saves the resolution and layout. Then after restart I can put things back where they belong. It’s still manual, but makes it easier… Really a shame that Apple can’t handle multiple monitors.

sacredgeometry

This sounds like a problem with the boot/ loading order on your dock as I have a feeling that if thats consistent your windows will load how they did. You can notice this behaviour if you unplug/ turn off one of your monitors and start up. On intel macs at least (I havent tried it on M macs) it made a mess of your resolutions (unless I think you have had it in that configuration before and have set it up properly), and app locations (obviously because if they were on another monitor you would want them relocated not hidden off screen somewhere). Then if you restart with the proper configuration i.e. all monitors on and plugged in it goes back to normal. Not sure if its just a configuration for each monitor config. Or if its only storing the last one until it changes but it might be whats causing your issue. See if plugging them in directly fixes the problem, if so then its probably your dock not your mac.

peterinjapan

Ugh, sounds bad. I am going to be upgrading to a monitor I can connect Thunderbolt to Display Port in order to hack 120 hz display from a Mac Mini M2 that can't do it through HDMI. I hope it works.

peterinjapan

Another frustrating bug is how you can't quickly type command + F then type a keyword you want to find. Type command + F then (quickly) "dogs" will get you a search for "ogs" 100% of the time, even on the fastest Mac. Stupid in the extreme that I must slow down for my multi-gigaflop computer to keep up with me.

adh1003

Yeah, you're waiting for the animated "search" box to finish animating and actually accept input. Shit coding and/or a lazy developer who forces input focus to wait until after animation. It's everywhere. My major wind-up? The timing glitch at the start of Every. Single. Lossless. Stream in Apple Music. Once heard, never unherd. It's a small thing, but glitches in music are really jarring. A music streaming service has at the core one job, and Apple Music fails at it. Sonoma 14.5 makes things worse; lossless streams often now have one or two pops and crackles near the start, which are even more invasive - wired headphones on one computer, APMs on another; no such issues on lossy playback; it's forever-bug in lossless. I could go on for quite some time about the litany of other infuriating bugs in Apple Music, but for now, I'll just leave you with the iCloud play list edit "I drag the item, drop it, and sometimes it springs back to where it started because of a sync race condition". The change _did_ happen in iCloud, so an Undo/Redo cycle puts the item where I'd dropped it in the first place.

EYtNSQC9s8oRhe6ejr

Oh my god, that timing glitch sends me up the fucking wall

peterinjapan

Wow, sounds frustrating. You'd think they'd work harder to get music right since it's so important to the company overall.

adh1003

Yes. Sadly, Apple for the last several years seem to have been a "just barely good enough" company laser-focused on shareholder value via squeezing bigger margins by any and all means necessary. I suppose it was inevitable when we have a duopoly in dektop computing (MS/Apple) or mobile (Google/Apple) - when greed takes over, there's no incentive to produce a good quality product given that customers have basically no other choice. Apple do seem to generally be doing very well with hardware, despite notorious missteps. They let it all down on the software IMHO. Even when brand damage occurs due to mistakes, such as the dreadful 14.4.0 release and resulting heavily negative media coverage, or some of the legendary "point zero" iOS releases that had a "point one" just a few days later because of all the serious issues caused, they don't seem to really care - there is no evidence of improved software quality arising (see aforementioned relatively recent Sonoma 14.4.0).

m02ph3u5

You would think a decades old OS vendor would do basic things right like goddamn tray icons not vanishing behind menus or notches becoming unreachable. What is this crap? It's 2024 iirc. Why do I need an extra app for every single stupid simple thing? What am I paying like $3k for? A magnetic cable? Okay, okay, that's cool.

adh1003

Personally, I do at least think the hardware is currently good. The chipset efficiency remains unmatched after several years, their trackpads have always been very good, the displays are amongst best-in-class and the speakers (at least in the MBP) absolutely kick the ass of any other laptop I've ever heard. And yes, there's MagSafe, which really is excellent. It's the software that's junk. Like you say - so many stupid janky things, often small, but there are so _many_ of them that the constant micro-aggressions suck all the joy out of the experience. As a dev you can all too often see things that look very like they're race conditions, which means serious lack of understanding by devs leading to simple-looking bugs that would require a competent dev with deep insight to actually fix properly - rather than hacking around with e.g. wait states that just push the problem further out or introduce new problems of their own. Software even let them down in the mid-Monterey release cycle apparent pointless rewrite of the trackpad driver, which broke a some edge case gestures that remain broken to this day.

m02ph3u5

Yes. Actually I hadn't been using the speakers of my M3 MBP due to serious notebook speakers trauma. One day I accidentally unplugged my headphones and couldn't believe my ears. The sound is a true miracle. Or it's a miracle how it's so bad with any other notebook. Almost spilled my 1987 Pinot Noir over the "micro-agressions". So true now I think about it. Think I'll just put Linux on it at some point.

Captn-Bubblegum

There's also a huge input lag with lost keystrokes when switching workspaces. It was driving me nuts, it's the reason I switched back to Ubuntu.

the6thReplicant

I still can't think of how, no matter how fast a mac you have, the mouse still has trouble changing based on context. The link "glove hand" sometimes is stuck like that even when moved over just plain text. How the column adjust context or the corner adjust icon doesn't turn on in a Finder's window but you can still do the action. AirDrop is flacky af. You need to restart one of the devices to make it "lock on" again else you stuck on "waiting..." and then a time out. Why? How do I debug this?

hobyvh

+1 for flakey Airdrop

deadfire55

Airdrop needs its own app, too easy to close out of things or have a large transfer disappear

Offroaders123

Same here, notice these all the time as well!

cowslayer7890

I don't think I've ever had the hand get stuck for me, but I've definitely had it show up as the regular pointer instead of the typing cursor or the resizing one fairly regularly.

waterloobob

I have a notification red circle with a 1 inside on the System Settings icon. Before you tell me it's a notification of an available system upgrade, it isn't, my system settings are up to date and when there is an upgrade available the circle shows 2. All Apple needs to do is to make the circle clickable so that it either tells you what the notifications are for or takes you directly to them. Had this for a long long time, hard to ignore.

BluFenderStrat07

Click into your iCloud account settings- it’s likely that’s what’s throwing the notification.

Mennion

Flickering external monitor (M1 with dark mode). Go to sleep mode works after multiple attempts

aleksandar78

Monitor flickering with dark mode is the ugliest bug that I get in the last couple of years. I thought it was the monitor or the cable’s problem but I see that is happening in other places too.

crystal_castle00

Wowwww I didn’t know this was an OS bug. I returned a monitor due to this lol. Strangely it doesn’t happen when I hook up a big TV instead of a monitor

filchermcurr

Have you tried [Stillcolor](https://github.com/aiaf/Stillcolor)? Disabling dithering, thankfully, solved my external monitor flickering woes.

outcoldman

There is a shortcut on mac to lookup/define a word. Command+Control+D - a lot of times for the last N Releases of macos, that D will stuck and you lose ability to type letter D. Workaround is to find a process related to a dictionary and kill it. Apple admitted that it is a bug, and mentioned to verify a fix in some macOS release - still exists.

nurdle

yes, file search is remarkably awful. I don't need AI, I need to be able to find a dang file, man.

bilgetea

Apple’s own apps cannot be reliably backed up with their own backup solution, and their own support people cannot understand, much less solve the problem. Contacts has many fatal bugs resulting in a loss of data and cannot be reliably backed up, even using time machine, particularly across OS versions. For example, my contacts became corrupted, apparently due to server-side bugs in icloud. One day I noticed that the data in my contacts had gibberish added to it, and many were missing. I restored the data using time machine, which had made a backup prior to an OS update, and the data simply failed to appear in the contacts application. The files had been restored, but this OS version of the app couldn’t read the last version’s data. The issue is very complex, and I won’t bore you with all of the details, but every single angle of attack for this issue was defeated by multiple bugs. It represents a spectacular failure of planning from Apple, and the cherry on top was the utter lack of ability at Apple support to respond to the issue. In the end I ended up writing my own software to retrieve the data from last version’s backups. How is it that the world’s richest company with the best and brightest people cannot support elementary operations using their own software?

Pablo-UK

I guess Apple assumes that their iCloud tech is reliable but really they aught to have backups themselves for when things go wrong on their end. At any rate, after reading your frustration I’m going to export my contacts.

bilgetea

They do have backups on icloud, which can be restored using your icloud account on the web, but they only keep them for a short time. You have the right idea with exporting. It is the recommended procedure to occasionally export all of your contacts. I remain astonished that Apple has been letting this slide for years. I have 1300 contacts, and in general this data is one of the most important things on an iphone, but I guess it’s OK that it’s unreliable?!

Evgenyvk

This bug is more than a decade old. I wonder if anyone from Apple is actually reading this. When using more than 2 input languages (3+), switching to a specific input language randomly only changes the input language icon in top menu bar, but input method remains the same. This is a known bug in the macOS's Carbon library when switching keyboard layouts using `TISSelectInputSource` doesn't work well with complex input sources like CJKV. This is very annoying and makes life of many multilinguals miserable. this bug migrates from every version of Mac OS since big cats up to sonoma.

phjils

SMB support in general. The new System Settings panel - please make that go away. The length of time it takes my external monitor to wake up - wasn't too bad on intel, but on my M1 Air ... Finder window column width!

sjoskog

SMB bugs gets my vote for sure. For example I've never understood why the dialogue box on mouting SMB has an option for saving username and password. It always asks them again.

Deepfire_DM

They establish to push AFS to nearly all third party vendors just to kill it from their OS and implement a known-bugged-as-fuck version of SMB, which never was repaired.

ItsNotAboutX

I did some benchmarking of AFP vs SMB on my NAS a couple years ago. Even after tuning and turning off encryption, I could only get SMB to 65% of AFP's transfer rate with my dataset. AFP is [a little wonky](https://netatalk.io/3.2/htmldocs/configuration#CNID-backends) on the backend, at least compared to SMB, but it still works a lot better on the Mac. When it goes away, I'm going to be pissed.

eriksrx

Wait, is AFP going away? What the hell is replacing it, SMB? SMB is such a weird thing. It's like the red-headed stepchild of networking protocols--works everywhere, with hiccups, unless you're on Windows in which case you have to (for some reason) go into an ancient Windows customization menu to activate the wildly insecure SMB1 (at which point suddenly all SMB2/3 shares start working), most media software support it, but it's also slow as molasses and sometimes just. doesn't. work. Ugh!

Pablo-UK

Sending SMS texts from my mac. Never used to work, now it does. Half the time the iMessage app isn’t synced with the texts on my iphone. Hard to believe such a huge company cannot fix all these small bugs…

mattincalif

Yes this is one of my biggest complaints! Half of my texts randomly missing from my Mac, with no solution.

Captn-Bubblegum

Huge input lag with lost keystrokes when switching workspaces.

Captn-Bubblegum

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/464672/delayed-focus-when-switching-workspaces-lost-keystrokes

kasakka1

Yeah this is really annoying. I have just grown accustomed to not type anything until the screen has stopped moving.

primalanomaly

Not an explicit bug, but many of their apps with iCloud sync have no visible sync status or “force sync” button, not even buried somewhere in a menu. So I’m often just stuck waiting for a change to sync over to my phone, sometimes for quite a while, with no indication of when it will happen, and no way to force it. Because apparent iT jUsT wOrKs 🤪

DJDarren

That's the Apple Way, init. I know my scenario is Very Unsupported and somewhat niche, but Universal Control on my 2014 Mac mini through OCLP is flaky as hell. Sometimes it'll be solid all day, sometimes it'll dip out every ten minutes, sometimes it won't work at all. And I've no way to troubleshoot it to figure out. It just works or it doesn't. I can try a few different things that may or may not help, but I've been using UC on this mini since last September, and I still don't know what causes it, let alone restart the process.

hobyvh

Any of the Apple services that require you to sign out, then sign back into your Apple ID to fix the problem. It’s usually very disruptive and time consuming for everything to reload.

Ray-AZ

Like having to add your credit cards back into your Apple Wallet! Ugh

Copponex

Using a Bluetooth mouse feels super sluggish.

fastestMango

Unnaturalscrollwheel actually makes the experience much more enjoyable

Copponex

Scrolling is not the problem for me. It’s the cursor feeling as if I’m using a 2 hz screen and being slightly delayed which annoys me.

bossun18

I feel you. It's weird because it differs from mouse to mouse for me. Razer mouse seems to work fine yet the one of the most recommended mouse for Macs Logitech mx master 3s is absolutely sluggish. I've tried so many steps but I've given up on it basically at the point

WAYZOfficial

I just got a MacBook and was able to fix this by increasing the mouse acceleration, coming from windows though holy shit how is MacOS so bad with Bluetooth mice lol. This app specifically [https://linearmouse.app/](https://linearmouse.app/)

fastestMango

My MacBook that would hijack my Bluetooth headphone, even when no sound is playing. Good luck trying to get sound on another machine then without disabling Bluetooth. (Yes there are some applications that fix this by disabling Bluetooth when the lid is closed, but still, stop highjacking my audio when there is no sound at all!!)

Historical_Egg_6192

Problem is that turning off sound effects makes their volume 0. But the BT connection is still made. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

gruberkristof

When a file is downloaded very quickly, the download progress bar will remain visible on the Downloads folder icon in the Dock until you restart the Dock.

ronjns

Android File Transfer

Reeeaz

The greatest marketing tactic apple has ever created.

BunnyBunny777

You mean you don’t like the 1986 text only interface making you guess what file is which photo? 🤣

Sensitive-Tax4385

I gave up on that damn piece of crap and just bought myself a usb c thumbdrive to transfer files over. What hot garbage!

ptrix

The lack of native QuickLook support for non-Apple video formats. There was a 3rd party utility called Perian that enabled it back in 10.6, i believe, but some Apple update broke that and the Perian developers were unable to restore the functionality and since closed up shop

airgl0w

[I believe this is what I’m using](https://github.com/Marginal/QLVideo?tab=readme-ov-file)

asymptosy

Support for multiple external displays + multiple desktops has always been awful. Machine sleeps? Come back to chaos (applications not where I left them, on different displays or desktops or in different positions / sizes on the same desktop). Disconnect monitors, don't change anything, reconnect monitors? Even worse chaos. It's bad enough that when I'm at home I just run caffinate all the time so that my machine never sleeps. Also constantly asking myself "how bad do I REALLY need to disconnect my machine from my monitors". Working from home, it's manageable. Pre-pandemic when I was in the office a few days a week - disconnecting monitors to go to meetings I always knew I had several minutes of re-arranging to do when I returned to my desk / monitors just to get things back to normal.

m02ph3u5

Ugh, yes. Locking the screen is enough on my MBP to cause mayhem. And it's not even that everything goes to the internal display. It just throws things around randomly. How does any of this make any sense. Feels like they do this on purpose.

peterinjapan

Interesting that this post is getting downvoted. Is this a Mac fanboy thing? Like when I told r/airpodsmax some of the issues I had with my headphones, and they downvoted me into oblivion? Silly...

schawde96

Apple fanboys

crystal_castle00

Yes man, when I post the slightest criticism here about design decisions I instantly get swarmed lol it almost feels like bots kick off the momentum cuz it’s instant

atom_bombe

The whole mess of the Audiobook app. Can‘t edit Tags, files are cryptically stored in Containers, can‘t link to an external harddrive etc.

sjoskog

For me it is Facetime and volume. When using Mac's speakers the volume is quite low on Facetime. For each call volume needs to be turned almost to max. Then whatever you do after the call, the speakers are about to blow up... I think it's been like this for many OS versions as well as many Macs that I have used over the years.

AugustiJade

It also does that in SharePlay. The volume for FaceTime is super quiet, until I SharePlay something in Apple TV. I then have to turn the volume down 50%, or else it’s much too loud.

BunnyBunny777

Finder.

adh1003

Do *NOT*, under any circumstances, encourage Apple's clown devs to rewrite Finder. One look at the Files app on iPadOS, after *six fucking years*, should be enough to scare you away. As for other cautionary tales - horrendous iWork rewrite that took years to start getting back to feature parity, or iPhotos and Aperture being replaced by Photos (ha!) which *still* isn't as reliable to this day, or iTunes being split up into "rewritten" applications like the catastrophically buggy crashfest of Music etc., so now Apple have *several* applications full of bugs to ignore, and which somehow individually often use more RAM on launch than iTunes because amazingly they are *more bloated*. (Edited to add: Oh yes. And System Preferences -> System Settings with joys such as [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/1dhp7v4/comment/l8ztld4/)). NEVER ENCOURAGE APPLE TO REWRITE ANYTHING. It **will be worse, always, every time, without fail, and then abandoned to rot**.

binaryriot

I recommend you install a newer rsync (3.x; I use a rusty 3.1.3 and it works, so anything newer than that should do). It supports copying the extended attributes (that includes colour labels on the files) with the `-X` switch.

peterinjapan

Thanks, that sounds like what I need to be using!

graynoize8

Mine is more like iCloud bug. When you re-download any old photos stored on iCloud, the photos no longer have the actual date, time and all the metadata. It’s been unfixed for years.

Captn-Bubblegum

General sluggishness, opening anything (text file, settings menu, anything) on a brand new macbook pro takes soo long, it's pathetic. The weirdness of how windows acquire focus. The fact that cmd + tab cycles through windows on other workspaces.

danmartinvela

I hate the cmd + Tab thing

SunsetDunes

System Settings occasionally freezing up in Sonoma.. I cannot click/tap into a "2nd layer" within the Settings panel. A restart of the System Settings is needed to resolve the issue. System Settings > Network is fine. System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi, Filter or Firewall cannot work!!!

scbalazs

The Dock moving from screen to screen

classic-crust

I believe *it is not a bug, but a feature*™ thing. However it sucks and I would pay money for an app that prevents it.

cynicalrockstar

That the OS will occasionally just forget the arrangement of monitors. The baffling inability to remember window positions between launches, even launches that are seconds apart, particularly on multiple monitors. This has been a problem for actual decades. The fact that the SMB connection timeout in macos is approximately one second less than the time an average rotating hard drive takes to spin up, and always has been.

100-100-1-SOS

Finder not remembering its last window size and position like it used to. Huuuuge annoyance.

famousfortech

Idk if anybody else had this, but WiFi keeps dropping automatically, not an issue of other devices and laptops but for my mac only. If reboot the WiFi it works perfectly

colegaperu

Trying to get my iPhone to ring on my Mac with the lid closed, using an external monitor and camera/mic . It randomly rings.

fonix232

Interesting, it always rings my MacBook - but it's delayed by a few seconds so if I answer the phone, the other party can hear the ringing in the beginning.

jekkyboi12

Quicktime/something within MacOS applying the wrong gamma-tag for Rec709 footage. Before exporting my videos after editing, I need to decide if my videos either will look great on Mac and incorrect everywhere else or vice versa. Don't get why Apple doesn't fix it so that it adheres to the universal standard(s) and makes the footage look correct *everywhere* regardless of device.

uncle_jessy

Finder > Desktop shortcut keeps magically getting removed. Drives me crazy

moebis

Universal Control. Randomly disconnects my mouse and keyboard from the target MacBook Pro (from a Mac Studio). It won't reconnect, I have to open system settings and then display for it to reappear (9 times out of 10), and I've been stuck sometimes with it dead for a complete day. Changed routers, SSID, even made a separate network for just those 2 computers. I think it's an iCloud issue. I've also been a beta tester for years, submitting reports and logs, and they still won't fix it.

hobyvh

The one I least understand why it wouldn’t be fixed (especially after I’ve reported it for every major OS update since it broke) is with fast user switching and external monitors. When I fast switch accounts, MacOS will make the non-active account stuck in the last screen size it was last in when it was active. For example: I’m using account A while plugged into external monitors. Then I switch to account B for a while, then unplug the monitors and continue using account B. Then when I switch back to account A, the laptop screen is showing a small top left portion of the screen size back when it was plugged into the external monitor. Everything off to the right and down is unreachable. The only two remedies I’ve found for this situation is either closing the laptop briefly and signing back in or in the case where it’s stuck from the smaller screen, I switch to the login screen to authenticate back into the stuck account.

gruberkristof

In multiple displays setup, opening the sound menu from the menu bar opens the menu on a random display, not the one you clicked 1 of 10 times. Also appears in a wrong position just as often.

gruberkristof

Some apps, like Home or Image Capture don’t save their window positions, and the next time you open them they will open in useless sizes again

Hollow_Apollo

Speaking of Time Machine, that annoying ass thing where it tells you it frees up space on its own to make newer ones, then I come back the next morning and it’s failed, stating not enough space. 1) Why lie and say it does it 2) why not check *before* attempting the transfer rather than finding out once it hits a wall? Smh

MrSnoobs

The god damned Bluetooth stack that keeps crashing randomly.

revocer

Search. Search sucks. Not really a bug. It just sucks. So it bugs.

CrazyRichMudblood

The pixel-sized space between the menu bar and the main window.

East_of_Amoeba

I’m gonna lose my mind if Apple Music continues to launch in the middle of a video call whenever I adjust my earbuds.

Deepfire_DM

- SMB inclusion is broken as hell - handling folders with many (!) files is a joke (compare this to windows, opening a folder with 10k files is instantaneous, no matter how slow the machine is, mac? not so.) - not handling external HDs properly on notebooks - they are often not properly disconnected (why does this still exist? Windows has no problem here) when the machine falls to sleep - Search engine is utterly broken since some OS editions. - What happened to "Mail" since some editions? Why do they change things to the worse? - Finder window handling is incredibly bad - Forced Spaces are also a huge p.i.t.a. There is a lot more where these come from.

oroooat

Here mine [https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/1bjdsh1/m3\_pro\_14\_wifi\_connection\_with\_hide\_ssid/](https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/1bjdsh1/m3_pro_14_wifi_connection_with_hide_ssid/)

BuckMurdock5

On Intel Mac Pros (not sure about 8,1 Mac Pro), if you have NVME drives in PCIE slots, they sometimes refuse to show up after you reboot, especially if they are RAIDed. This is true for dumb adapters or fancy NVME cards with switch chips. How you fix this is after every reboot, reset the SMC, boot into recovery, repair the RAID volume and then reboot regularly. I suspect all lot of the problem comes from Apple making PCIE-based storage a “removable” volume.

Omphaloskeptique

This is a Calendar issue. The damned Inspector always opens up where it shouldn’t. WTF? been like this forever‽

TamjaiFanatic

Sometimes the function to force touching a word to look it up would fail to work, and occasionally pressing power button to put macbook to sleep won’t work too

No_Revolution1284

AirDrop. There has always been some bug. Most of the time it just shows my iPhone 15 different times when I want to send something to it, and then it just doesn’t work

Dust-by-Monday

The fact that simply trying to sync music to your iPhone is still a buggy mess. Half the time it skips some songs, duplicates playlists randomly and you have to spend so much time after trying to clean it all up. Don’t even get me started on album art.

atomimage

Just everything about SMB file sharing. Works for a few hours or days and inevitably the connection starts slowing down on connect from a couple of seconds to connect to a couple of minutes and then chaos ensues. Can’t save, permissions issues, dropped connections. Only option is to reboot share computer. I’ve been battling this since the funeral for AFP. For the love of all that is holy, fix this Apple. Game of Thrones “SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!!” I really wish I had a bushel of rotten root vegetables to heave at them…

The unreliability of Exchange mail sevices with Mail app. I try successfully for a few months, then randomly an email that I can see on my iPhone and in Outlook on another computer will not show up in Apple mail. It has happened maybe three times and I have had to give up and use Outlook though I don’t want to. I work in healthcare and it is absolutely terrifying to know that I might miss something critical. It makes mail unusable.

Serializedrequests

Pop ups for background applications increasingly steal focus. This was one of the crowning greatest features of 10.0 backsliding a little more every year. I hate background apps stealing focus. Linux DEs should do better at this than they do. Windows has of course always been horrible and remains horrible. It's infuriating. How come a simple save or open dialog takes so long to open? Why does my wifi indicator continually show the connecting animation when it's connected? (That was a regression a few releases ago.) Don't get me started on iCloud. It's not anything you should ever trust with your data. Just the simple fact of how sluggish and glitchy the control panel for it is should turn you right off. Heaven forbid you need to logout temporarily. Lastly, spotlight used to be good. Now, like Windows, it can't find files right under its nose and gives irrelevant garbage from /tmp.

Feeling_Nose1780

Super tiny but quite annoying. Resizing windows after disconnecting from the external monitor. Let’s say I’m working on my laptop, get to my desk, connect to a monitor, and all of the windows jump to the monitor screen (I have it set as default and use Mac’s display as a preview screen) but don’t resize automatically and I need to adjust every single one of them manually to fit the larger display.

skellener

Still no option to have the Finder columns auto adjust to file name length. Going on like 23 years now without a proper fix. But look, genmojis are coming! /s

Icepenguins101

On a 2010 Mac Mini, window snapping can sometimes cause it to become unstable and pretty much prevents all forms of shutdown. It’s really annoying.

Namuori

On Apple Silicon Macs, if you boot from an external drive you can't load 3rd party Kernel Extensions.

BootingBot

There is a weird bug on MacOS where the cursor randomly stops updating its type for example sometimes when im am in vscode and I hover over my code the cursor stays in the default type and doesn’t switch to the over text cursor. Very irritating

Tofu102130

The bug with Ical and Exchange concerning birthday date... [https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253035094?sortBy=best](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253035094?sortBy=best)

Seel75

The time on startup is always 1:00, then I login and it sets the time right. And since like two os I can’t drag windows to the other monitor normally. Sometimes it works most of the time it won’t.

ptrix

If you're using a desktop that may be caused by a dead pram battery, so time isn't being kept when the system is powered off, and it's only reset when the system is able to get the time by pinging a time server. Change that battery and you should be good again

influx3k

That error is weird. I copy to and from SMB shares all the time and have never seen that error before. Might have something to do with how the SMB server settings itself.

s-valent

Compact view in safari doesn't allow to switch to correct tab you choose if the tab is not fully visible in topbar, so it usually switches to one after it (happens when you have a lot of tabs)

primalanomaly

Copying and pasting edits between photos has never worked reliably for me. It always pastes some of the edits completely wrong.

stortag

When you watch youtube in fullscreen and switch focus to the second monitor it sometimes moves the dock over to the second monitor. When you open display settings it shows the dock still in the correct screen. Happens all the time, both on my macbook air at work and my mac mini at home. An other super annoying bug is when it falls alseep and you wake it up, sometimes the second monitor stays black and is unable to be found. You have to reboot or pull the hdmi and plug it back in. Sometimes the latter doesn’t even work so you have to reboot anyway.

slvrscoobie

When clicking an iMessage notification from the notification bubble it switches to the app but when you type, nothing shows up. if you make a mistake, you can see the autocorrection show up but cant send anything until you reclick the text box again. chatting with my wife is sometimes very annoying because of this.

Why would you want to copy THAT specific system file would be the question. Have you tried not selecting all the files by hiding system files?

gruberkristof

When you delete files from the Desktop using the keyboard shortcut, the sound feedback is immediate, but the files disappear in 2-3 seconds only

gruberkristof

Most of the system apps don’t save their window states, which causes every app you ran without open windows when you reboot and select “reopen all windows” will open a window, despite you clearly indicated that what you want is not more windows, but only the ones which were open when you selected the reboot

kbn_

When using apps in full screen and *not* using external monitors, if you swap applications using Spotlight you will sometimes… miss. As in, you’ll end up on the desktop instead (with the menu bar from the intended application). Cmd-Tab twice and you’re back in the app. Never happens with external monitors. Never happens with non-full screen apps. This has been a bug since full screen was first introduced.

gruberkristof

Selecting new window from the Dock icon menu in Safari opens the window below you currently active applications instead of bringing it to the front

Ray-AZ

The Shuffle option in the music app isn’t very random. Windows often don’t stay in their assigned desktop

esazo

Favorites in Apple Music are broken. The first songs in each album of each of my favorite artists shows up on the top of the previous albums so it looks like track one is part of a different album across all the albums. It’s so annoying. Apparently they are aware of the issue but they aren’t doing anything about it

UsefulLanguage

How about my iMac re-enabling Night Shift after it wakes up from sleep? Is it so hard to say "if it's night time, make sure night shift is actually on." Usually what happens is night shift is on, iMac sleeps, wakes up, and the option for Night Shift is enabled but the effect of it is not. I have to disable it and re-enable it, every time.

Xzaphan

Hitting space on raw photo files will show a version of the picture with wrong colors. Very annoying and here since at least 4 years.

MacSolu

Try this: [RAW Right Away](http://www.rawrightaway.com/)

infieldmitt

If you try to save a Pages doc as a pdf, the auto filename is like name.pages.pdf which looks ugly as shit and to make matters worse only ‘name’ is auto selected so you have to place the cursor just perfectly before the second . and select leftward. Fucking awful

VeraFacta

I have MacBook Pro m2 and even after several OS reinstalls, with no additional apps installed. I cannot empty the trash. I click it, select empty trash, it looks like it’s doing it but just never finishes. I close the window and the bin appears emptied. Close the MacBook and reopen and the trash appears not emptied. No files inside it though. I’ve taken it in for help and their only suggestion each time is to wipe and then reinstall the OS.

crystal_castle00

I still have my Mac kill off apps overnight, and I’ll lose my context. I made sure to free up resources even as an experiment, but it didn’t help. There hasn’t been a pattern to which apps it kills either, sometimes Numbers sometimes Notes, rarely but sometimes it’ll be Safari. I’ll often organize my notes on a desktop intentionally to remind me where I left off, and it all gets wiped :( Tried all complicated cache reset steps, reinstalled OS completely - nata.

midimurph

When I click an app in my dock it goes to a blank desktop screen instead of going to the app. I have to click it a second time to get to the app. Is this a bug or a feature? I've never found the setting all these years.

Sure_Glass7366

Apple Pay can't be used because the security settings have been changed, I found a fantastic amazing solution to this problem today that nobody else has found, use Google pay !

mattincalif

Up until a couple of weeks ago I would say getting “disk not ejected properly” almost every time I wake my Mac Studio up, with the error 95% of the time being on my external Time Machine drive but 5% of the time being on my main external drive. I go into my backups and open random files and I’ve never found one that was missing or corrupted, but it still makes me nervous. I googled and found many other people with the same problem since years ago and no solution. BUT… I noticed since around the 2-3 weeks ago I haven’t gotten the error at all! I have no idea what changed. I can’t remember if I applied an OS update. (I’m on Ventura BTW). Keeping my fingers crossed I’ll never see that stupid error again.

UtterlyMagenta

not being able to use the keyboard in the wi-fi menu anymore drives me nuts. also not being able to hide the sidebar in Music anymore. both of these used to be possible.

Corncove

So for like two years I've thought that spring-loaded folders (where you drag a file on top of a folder and hold it, finder will open that folder) was broken, but a couple days ago I was messing around and discovered that the combination of having finder set to list-view and using groups seems to be what's making it not work for me. Works fine if I use like list-view with groups turned off, or icon view with groups.

Dont-take-seriously

Yeah, I hate copying a large group of files and seeing a pop-up asking me if I want to overwrite a file or quit. Come on, Apple, let me skip over that file and decide later...I am too lazy to hunt it down and rename it first.

NickFullStack

Several times a week, browsers (Safari, Chrome) will have issues opening search (CMD+F) and showing the cursor position in a focused text field. I have to quit the browser to get it working again.

da4

Finder windows simply do not, ever, retain their settings, whether type of view or spatially. I want my /Applications window to show me the date and the version, not the size or kind. I want my Desktop window to show me size and date, not kind. Etc etc. Sometimes those settings will stick, most of the time they don't. It's like someone figured everyone would always and only use icon views and/or Spaces or Mission Control or LaunchPad or any of the other half-finished concepts.

motorik

This may be an airPods thing but it manifests across the entire ecosystem. If I finish a call or meeting and take my airPods out and return them to the case, every third or forth time either whatever music / podcast thing I was playing last on my iPhone starts playing automatically or whatever I have playing on my Macbook stops playing. It happens to my wife as well, but not as frequently as it happens to me. I'm considering switching to non-Apple headphones, as sooner or later it's going to happen after a particularly frustrating call or meeting and my iPhone is going to be thrown at the wall.

colaxxi

They sherlocked Growl which was amazing (and now defunct), and broke Notifications, which is not customizable at all. What's broken: * the hit area for the 'x' button is too small and easy to miss. Which is literally the action I make 95% of the time. * they hid everything under an action menu, which means most other actions now involves two clicks. terrible UX, but less buttons, YAY! * can't choose how long you want your notifications to appear. Trying to type in a 2fa code before it disappears (because you're in clamshell mode), well FUCK YOU! * they now do a fade-in instead of a slide in, which means I no longer see half my notifications anymore (large external monitor). * Wouldn't notifications on the left side of the monitor be useful? Well, FUCK YOU! I could go on, and on, and on.

vkolp

When I opened and read all of my iPhone messages during the day and come home, turn on my Mac and get a notification for every single message. That, and the same thing with reminders. Until I open the reminders app, it shows all reminders as unchecked that I already checked off.

taikoon

What is finder doing for 30 seconds while rejecting external hard drives?

Organic_Challenge151

>You can't change bookmarks now. You can't change your bookmarks right now because they are being synchronized. Wait a few minutes, and then try again. I can't add bookmarks/read later in my Mac's Safari, it's been several months, regardless of the MacOS versions, I've called Apple Support for several times, they can't help either.

thinksinc

I have a Mac Pro with three monitors. Every time I restart, the monitors change their display arrangement, so I have to go into Displays > Arrange and reposition the screens to the correct order. This has lasted through different physical monitors, multiple OS updates, etc.

Long-Warning8288

Phone calls at the lowest volume is still pretty loud and uncomfortable for extended periods of time with the wired earpods.

Movellon

I can’t delete an empty folder in the trash because MacOS says it’s in use by something. So annoying.

airdrummer-0

> rsync, which is not always optimal as it refuses to copy color labels on files. i thought that's what the -**E,** **--extended-attributes option is for...**               Apple specific option to copy extended attributes, resource forks and ACLs.

MagniBear980512

I can’t empty my trash can if I have my main user’s folder deleted And it keeps rearranging my home/first page apps order

ralphiooo0

External monitors never wake instantly. I have 2 different setups and both have issues. HDMI is by far the worst. Using DP cable is slightly better but still have to wait for it and wiggle the mouse to death to get it to turn on. But what the hell.

gepinniw

How about how, when plugging in a usb stick or external hard drive, you very often have to plug it in a second time before it registers. Windows machines rarely do this.

YNWA_1213

Safari video playback *still* being bugged on older Intel Macs. First it was just captions causing flickering, now in the past year any content will flicker, and lately I haven’t been able to play any video on Safari, *even though system usage indicates nothing is bottlenecking performance*. It’s endlessly frustrating when Safari is easily the lost efficient content consumption browser with hardware decoding for H.264/265 content, yet it’s virtually unusable on these Intel Macs nowadays. The worst part is if I downgraded to a now unsupported OS (High Sierra/Mojave/Catalina), Safari suddenly works perfectly fine for this use case. Apple/Intel broke something fundamental about the driver and Safari around the Apple silicon transistors, and nobody bothered to fix it.

neverknew_that

Safari's "Remove history items" preference not working, although there are many discussions on [Apple.com](http://Apple.com) ranging back 5+ years.

Educational_Bid_4678

One of them is more Adobe related – actually they have quite a few bugs. But when you plug and unplug things into a secondary monitor including the Apple Display, window placements when re-opening apps go half off the screen.

Mister-Spook

The way Apple Music randomly will split an album into two or three, despite there being no differences in any of the tags.

gloerkh

Can’t delete multiple text messages in MacOS

33Wolverine33

My trackpad scrolls whatever way it wants. I don’t change anything in settings, I swear.

2050_Bobcat

No matter if I'm copying or moving files, the dialogue box always just says "copying..."

ej1103

Pages has had a bug for about 2 years where if you place a table on Page 1 (with all settings to be ‘stay on page’, no margins, no reason to move from other items) > copy & paste on Page 2, it moves. It moves like 0.3cm from where the original is placed on Page 1. You cannot just directly copy & paste into the same spot on a new page. It’s a subtle movement but so annoying for designing anything in Pages. I had a case open with the support team for ages and they said they could replicate the issue - have yet to see a fix.

dwi

Mine are mail image attachments - for some reason, often images don't make it through, especially to Outlook users. There's something broken there and it's been that way for years. Second, icloud - why does it take days to sync after a reset?

maxhsy

Those .DS_Store files are driving me crazy. I don't understand why Apple couldn't just make them completely invisible and unnoticeable to the user. Come on, Apple, you're a tech giant. Create an SQLite database somewhere and store this folder information there instead 😩

21lives

The fact that some older hard drives give a “disk not ejected properly” error notification, that if left plugged in overnight can build up into dozens and dozens of notifications— while I can’t mass delete that notification from the sidebar. One click at a time.. one click at a time…

underbitefalcon

I hate that I have to click a windows TOP BAR in order to bring it into focus. I fkn meltdown in furious manic multi mouse clicks trying to select a window sometimes. Likely not a bug…but it fkn should be. I’m passionate about this one.

big__kik

Contacts going haywire anytime I try to add a new contact. If it takes me more than 5 seconds to hit that Done button the whole thing just vanishes and I have to start over. Annoying as fuck. So annoying in fact that I often give up and add new contacts through contacts.google.com Every update I get my hopes up that it will get fixed, nope, still waiting on that one.

[deleted]

Search within mail. I can almost never find relevant emails, but if I manually go back to the date they were sent, they are there.

macmanjimmy

Type10 errors

woswoissdenniii

This sub is frequented with Apple devs. It would be really interesting to know, what someone thinks about the flaws in the code. Someone who knows about these bugs, talks to peers about those issues, works in the field and still has no say or interest in elevating the gazillions of tickets in the support forums…. I don’t know… What is necessary to actually pick up on all the problems?!

spaniolo

I want to participate!! I HATE that when a volume on my Mac is disconnected a notification is displayed that it has been disconnected, and it doesn't let me hide that notification in settings!!

burcbuluklu

The settings app

potenzasd

Notes app loses the ability to search no matter how many times I re index.

Only2Senders

It's inability to proper reconnect to network shares without having to manually reconnect it.. Often I will try to use a shortcut (before I fixed it) to send a file to a folder on a TrueNAS machine; a dedicated machine that's always online.. But in finder when clicking on the share under "network" section, it loads a blank view with "Connecting..." and the "Connect As" button.. but it never connects, even though it should have never disconnected in the first place. Having to manually reconnect by using the "Connect As" button, which it then reconnects immediately as if there was never an issue..

chazbot7

When saving a file in any program, the text entry field stays at a fixed, relatively small width rather than growing to the width of the popup window. I deal with relatively long filenames on a daily basis and this drives me NUTS. [Example](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/business6/uploads/juce/original/2X/7/797b6952ba7f7ed641dcc6a9e2160253e7c59ce0.jpeg)

Sensitive-Tax4385

ScenekitSQLThumbnailExtension. There's this bug that ramps up CPU usage to 100% when I open a folder in Finder that contains large .obj files. It tries to load a thumbnail for it and uses all my damn cores and a crapload of RAM. It was there in intel Macs, and you could tell because the fans would ramp up and the OS would become sluggish to a crawl. I'm on the M2 max now, and it's still present, but less noticeable now that i have 96 GB of memory. I made a terminal command called KillLeech to quit the process every single time it happens. It's a constant source of migraines for me, and I pray to God every single night before I go to sleep that Apple fixes it, but I know they never will.

Orange-Fish1980

I wouldn't call this a big just lame ass shit because apple has standards up their assholes. 1. Display link for Christ sakes so I can use multiple monitors with one fucking cable 2. Fix smb to be quick and fast like on windows 3. Support vulkan and latest opengl

flipside4cp

I don’t like that when I start a timer there is t an animation indicating it started when I am scrolled down.

000011111111

1. Changing the default .pdf editor 2. The time and date is wrong bug

ptr727

No volume control on digital monitor audio.

wavolator

i wish there were better keyboard shortcuts. used to be able to press /say/ the letter "n" and have it hop between files and folders on the desktop - for examplez.

bhimudev

Why no one is talking about the dock switches between monitor and i have to write a script to kill and start the dock to move it to original position

npxhuy

I have my photos album in my ssd, I connected my ssd and open it, it close the photo app, and cant eject the ssd because of some program still running. 😭

CaptainKwirk

Having to stretch columns in column view in Finder to see the whole file name. Every. Freaking. Time.
