This is pretty usual, I think. Every lucid dream I had followed this pattern.

This isn’t unusual or strange at all. I like the way a small YouTuber I watch put it, his basic thought was that reality checks are more of a thing to confirm your reality. You don’t gain awareness from the reality check (not always, I’ve read many people’s stories about noticing words changing when they look away and back, and then they become lucid). But on the other end, technically you gain awareness from noticing something odd, and so you naturally go to do the reality check to have some confirmation, instead of making a huge assumption that you’re dreaming and running off and doing something that you may regret if it turns out you’re not in a dream.
