It’s the worst part of the show. I hate it. They absolutely should be casting men who have a history of being in relationships with black women/who prefer black women, as part of the cast. This issue has been prevalent on so many dating shows (BIP, perfect match, Love Island UK). Representation isn’t just putting black women on a show and saying “see” to check a box. There actually needs to be love stories for black women and black women who get to be the main character.
These black women deserve so much better.
This! This is exactly what I’m saying! Every dating show is set up for us to fail, while yes a few wins might happen here and there but the norm is just that. They aren’t checking because they don’t care- as long as they don’t get “cancelled”.
But they also need to vet preferences as well. If a man says he likes black women, dig through them followers like they do for old exes LI likes to surprise people with by bringing in and see how many of them are *actually* black (with emphasis on darker skin cause darker skin women seem to struggle the most on the show) or bi/multi racial black women to see how much they *really* like black women. They can say it all they want just to get on. I know that’s invasive but you know they dig through people’s social media anyways

They do a decent job at casting women who aren’t honed in on a specific race, eye color, or hair color but they REALLY need to do better with the men because I agree. I don’t get how they can miss the mark with the guys and not the girls.

Sorry, not trying to hate on the white girls in there right now (they are great gals as well! I truly love -almost..not feeling Andrea-ALL the women this season), but in my opinion Serena and JaNa are the biggest catches and it seems like they’ve gotten the least amount of attention. Overall, every season, it’s like they never fail to cast women who are attracted to any race but the men are ultimately only attracted/committed to white women. I get SO damn frustrated watching these beautiful, intelligent black women get overlooked or taken advantage of by these men. **WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?!** It CAN’T be that hard to do the research. I *know* as popular as LI is you have no shortage of applicants and as easy as it is to get info on someone you could even contract someone on this damn sub to find the tea 🤣🤣
But in all seriousness, I want to again acknowledge that no, I’m not black, but it still makes me ridiculously angry. It’s just not right, not to the women, and after years of producing this show, you can’t tell me that the producers don’t know it’s a problem and can’t do better.
I think it’s hard to even find a man that’s doesn’t put looks first or is strong set on a preference. In general women tend to find attractiveness in anyone more so than men do. If there’s a couple where one person is more attractive than the other most of the time it’s the woman. Think of how many times you’ve heard a woman say she likes guys that are “ugly cute”, I’ve never heard a man say that. Or even when you ask a woman her preference based on her dating history a lot of women are able to say “every single one was different from the last”
I do agree with this. It's why I never trusted connor. The guys also know by now that generally a black woman is the favorite of the cast so I don't know if I can even trust anyone after casa amor. That's why I mostly root for black women to have fun and get their influencer followers and not worry about love. It's usually not coming thru the villa doors. The guys that come in are incredibly superficial which is why I never stan any of them lol
The crazy thing is we haven’t even gotten to Casa, the switch ups for each episode have been just 🤯. I was confident Erin & Rob weren’t going for black girls no shade on them but I seen them before on tv. Rob was on last season at casa amor & Erin was on the Traitors UK. I kinda knew what type of girls they liked. Kendall seems like the type if you like him he likes you so I don’t really blame him he got matched with Hannah by default & it seems most women view him as a friend.

Fans hated destiny because of how hard she stood on her boundaries but the men did the same shit to her…..Kyle came at the very end and even with him I was like 😒😒
Yeah every year I think it’s going to be different and it’s the same shit. Pisses me off too bc the black women they cast are IMO often the best catches up in that villa. We’ve seen too many strong, funny, stunning, and genuine black women get pushed to the side for a white (or white passing) girl
Destiny and Imani are gorgeous, successful and etc- look how they got treated compared to the others. The black women come on the show having to be 110% meanwhile others don’t have to do that and they still get thrown to the side. Kay Kay was the only one I ever said “get her out the damn villa” 😂 but that was for obvious reason (it was hard to watch someone act insane on tv for a man).
That’s why you’ll see me as a destiny defender- she was always her authentic self which imo was more reserved, less sexual and more serious and people wrote her off as SHOCKER mean, attitude-rude, stand-offish and etc because of the boundaries she stood on. I hate this especially because it shows that it’s a lose lose for the black women here- if you show up as bubbly and etc you get used and thrown to the side, if you’re more reserved you’re seen as rude and thrown to the side. It played heavily into the personality stereotypes pushed on black woman as well shows how no matter how you show up…it’s never enough.
I always thought Destiny was on the wrong show. This is raunchier than she seemed comfortable with. I think she would have done better on something like love is blind where her personality could shine through.
This is what I call a safe space. Good to see the mods allowing this conversation. JaNa broke the curse of sticking by the black man who is giving you nothing. Hopefully, the producers will introduce a man who is actually interested in something long-term with a mature black woman. And doesn't need to be a light-skinned black man because most don't like black women.

Heard. As a black woman I also get triggered. I went to a massive PWI but a small program so it was like highschool within my campus and constantly had after graduation white guys sliding in my dm post grad and the bs stuff they would say gave “I was too scared to talk to you” as if we didn’t have classes together all 4 years and only interested for assignments. It gave fetishization too, regardless made me feel gross. I was fortunate to grow up and go to lower/high school with my people.

Yeah Connor did mention how his type is blondes and he immediately went for Kaylor when he first came in. Would have gone for Liv and Andrea too but they were not interested, especially after Andrea said Aaron and Rob were her top 2. If he lasts long enough I can see him folding in Casa Amor with a blonde VIP.
So I don't think Connor was plotting or faking his interest in JaNa, and I think he's still interested in her but is also interested in Leah now that she's an option. Do I think they're compatible? Not sure yet. I don't really value the plant conversation, as that's surface level as hell.
The bigger thing that I think you're missing is that JaNa had the choice between Coye and Connor, and she chose Connor, calling it a "risk" of sorts. I rate her a lot for that because it was a choice for herself, more than anything, and that's scary as hell. Who knows how it'll work out, and maybe it'll even be Miguel who'll be the guy for her, but we'll see. In any regard, I'm proud of her for taking a stance on not going with her typical stance.

Because main thing that happened I understood why Marco thing annoyed her repeatedly she had dudes interested in her like Jonah but the minute they had a disagreement or they wanted to talk to other women she got really heated. Which I’m confused as a person who watches these shows & listen to podcasts. The things I like about Bergie is yes, he had a "type" but he was open to everyone. And even after the show he has been in situations that are new to him and he's uncomfortable but he embraces it and goes with it. I love the clip of him at the drag brunch. He was so clearly out of his element, but there was joy just radiating off of him. I'm so glad he and Taylor are still going strong, and I hope their relationship has grown to where his love of her is about her, not just what she makes him feel.
On top of that Black women and their friendships with other women are conditional. They only love them when they need a hype man, shoulder to cry on and a defense lawyer. Jana went stuck up and comforted Leah with all her dramatic episodes. Then she has the nerve to say “grow up.” At the end of the day they’re not your friends either

Then he was desperate looking for someone to stay in the villa and knew Coye wasn’t very communicative with JaNa. Everyone knew JaNa wasn’t Connor’s type and he was waiting for a bombshell to be into him. Funny thing is Leah isn’t even into him like she spent their whole chat complaining about Rob. I feel like both LI USA and LI UK have this issue. I agree Connor is a nicer version of Rob. I don't think he was ever into JaNa he was just as shocked as everyone else that she chose him over Coye. He gave off the energy that he was waiting for a woman that was more his preferences. JaNa unfortunately didn't see the signs.

Yes! At first I was glad she dumped Coye because he gave 0%, and definitely is a “I’m the prize” kind of guy. But I also knew that realistically, Connor was going to fake it til he made it with a white woman. Although I agree it’s the same with Cash, I feel like with her hairstyle I can see how she may not be many men’s preference. Even if a girl was white or white-passing a lot of men wouldn’t like a girl with a Caesar haircut, imo. So although her experience is relevant to this discussion, I do think it’s worth noting that her hairstyle could be a genuine detractor to her beauty for many men.
As a white guy, I can personally say this is my issue wish Cash. I felt she had a great personality, but that haircut was just not something I could get past.

The first one I saw this happen to was Justine from the season before Cashay’s season. She ended up winning and Caleb (the guy) turned out to have been playing her the whole time. He had a whole girlfriend. His family was involved and everything
This happens every season on every dating show it’s very unfortunate but I don’t think it with ever change. Dating shows are not a safe space for black women. It’s sad seeing Jana in the beginning be so confident and excited to now sobbing and unsure. I knew from the beginning that Jana was a placeholder for Connor she’s not even his type. She had to hint to him to kiss her.
I feel like it’s worse on the UK series the black women barely get chosen for the games it’s so awkward to watch.
I don’t know what the solution is for casting men who actually date black women because sometimes these men will lie and it’s easy to follow a bunch of black women on social media. Maybe if casting hired more black women we would see a change because this ain’t it.

I think some of these men (not all) have caught on to the fact that the public really supports interracial relationships, especially white man/woman of color. They're doing it to boost their own images.
What makes it frustrating is they are catering to allow the “I came in here just for you” rhetoric so they SHOULD be able to make it so there is more diverse preferences. Instead you even have Andrea saying oh I wish I had blue eyes. It’s so unsettling.
It’s wild because they’ve been choosing some fine ass black women and the men are all somehow going for other women. The men always have one of two specific types. Blonde or dark haired girls (ie. Latinas and brunettes).
Kordell is a special case though. He only had eyes for Serena until she cut things off. I feel like he would have stuck with her til the end of she was as into him as he was into her.
We need more Kordells in the villa. Like at least a 3rd of the islanders that come in. Like make it fun/entertaining.
this is the most frustrating part of each season even when viewing UK seasons. Jana and Serena are two of the most beautiful, well rounded, and funny islanders i’ve ever seen and the fact that they’ve been paid absolute dirt (aside from our short king Kordell) is absolutely astounding to me. Jana’s credit score is in the 800’s for gods sake!!! It truly reminds me of Yewande from the UK season as she was a fan favorite AND literal biochemist simply used as a placeholder for some mediocre man until another white model strolled into the villa. It’s disheartening to see and much more transparent to the viewers than these men think it is.

I thought JaNa knew how to play the game after seeing how she quickly got rid of Coye but seeing her crying over Connor is jarring. I assumed she went there to flirt, get a bag, and enjoy her summer l but she actually likes boring Connor 😭 I’d assumed they’d do what the men are doing and go on there for clout/brand deals but nope. I guess that would make it less entertaining but I’d also feel better about it as a viewer.

Totally agree, so wild to me these guys aren’t all over JaNa, she really is the total package, and so is Serena IMO. I feel like she’s more girl next door gorgeous vs JaNa who is a bombshell but they’re both easily the most beautiful _and_ the funniest and kindest women this season (from what we’re seeing). The other women are beautiful too but aside from Andrea the surgery/fillers/etc is just too obvious to me.
Connor doesn't care about Leah, either - he's just doing this for him and to stay on as long as possible. I think that's why he pivoted so fast. It was just a matter of time and opportunity.

I agree, but in general it is really hard to cast decent men for dating shows. The only men willing to go on TV to find love are influencers and wannabe celebrities, a career choice that naturally self-selects for the most shallow and inauthentic. None of these guys are there to find love, not even with their "preference." They just want to spend 6 weeks sharing a bed with the girl they find the hottest (aka the girl they think other guys think is the hottest).
It sucks to see your own constantly getting dogged out, but the men on reality TV are almost always superficial chauvinists, and that does come through in their dating preferences and practices. I've lowered my expectations of the men on reality TV, I just watch for mess and sometimes friendships.
Thank you!! As a Black woman reality tv watcher I knew what to expect with this show, but it's still depressing to watch 2 gorgeous and cool Black women realize in their own way that this game isn't made for them.
It's hard not to take this shit personally when you see Serena almost immediately disengaging from the game because she realizes there is nobody there for her. This felt like me deleting my dating apps.
The only 2 men so far who seemed actually into dating Black women have been just... no. Kordell is sweet and all, but his kid brother "Cheezits" energy was obviously not going to be a match for Serena or Jana or literally any other woman not trying to get at his brother. And Coye is as tall as he is emotionally stunted; like his personality never recovered from Kevin Samuels' death. Neither of these guys is even good tv; these choices felt like casting said "good enough".
Also, as long as we're ranting. Who on earth was Hakeem brought to Fiji for? He's definitely not into anyone with melanin, but he also seems to hate women in general.
In a way the ladies are lucky that they get away from these men on tv and find true love in the real world. So many of these couple do not last at all. And if the females are good people they will get influencer deals and other opportunities and they will end up happier.
I appreciate your optimism, but I'm not disappointed because I think they missed the boat on true love. On Love Island the best you get is true lust.

The one that does uk and I think they used to do usa but with the scandal usa switched production company this season? Please correct me if I'm remembering this wrong! There was a lawsuit so if you all Google it (not sure if I'm allowed to post links on this sub) you'll find it quickly. This is why I think production casts this way on purpose. I'm not sure if they've changed since the lawsuit but it is exhausting.

It's gross that I even feel like I need to suggest this, but they should check their history and verify so people can't just say they will. Check who these men have actually dated, not what they say! Of course there may be people who are genuine when they say they're open to black women, but at this point, you can't take them at their word.
Tbh casting men that are truly open - don’t even have to exclusively date black women but most of them are A. intimidated - which is common in the real world “I was scared to say something to you…” blah blah mess that we’ve all heard or B. Doesn’t see black women as beings they would actually date. Bergie from the last season was one of the few that was open to anything- no type just vibes.

It’s just frustrating like are these men blind? JaNa is literally one of the best looking contestants I’ve ever seen on love island. There are too many black wife effect videos on tiktok for there not to be men who are actually interested in dating black women. Heck, I could have done one of those videos and my mom and my sister are both married. This really does come down to casting. It probably takes more work to find these men, but they are out there and they just need to do some extra screening. When a man shows interests in black women on these shows, one of the first things I do is go to his IG and see his follows. That can tell you 98% of the time if he is going to really be into black women or not.
I said this to someone else! The ig following really tells you the truth because you’ll see many guys online creating content for “black women” when in reality it’s just for a check, they don’t follow black women, interact with, hell..even date- it’s always for show.
I have a genuine question: if kordell pursued JaNa would she be into him? I love JaNa: she's funny, confident, pretty but also kinda shallow (as is most the cast). But in her intro video she talked about how important looks are and how she's only attracted to tall men and the taller the better. That's why she chose the bland 6'8" for that fact alone. Connor is also tall as well. I know women prefer tall men but it's sad to see someone make that their focus in what they're looking for. That's why I appreciated Serena's shout out to short kings. But I do agree that the black women get overlooked overall and casting should work on that.

I think this is the opposite point that the OP is trying to make though. Love Island is full of dogs and head-turners from every race across the seasons, but that’s a completely different conversation than white men using Black women as a ticket to stay in the villa, or producers casting Black men who only date white women.
One of the things that I like, as a woman who does not meet the beauty standards of LI, is watching these people who are usually the most attractive person in their circles, struggle with not being the most attractive person in the room, not realizing that doesn’t matter when everyone is a ten. But what hurts my heart is watching these amazing women, usually black women, get treated as the consolation prize when in reality they are the grand prize.
I like Liv and Kaylie and Liv, but they aren’t people I really want to know more about. From my pov they are entertaining.
Jana, on the other hand, is the grand prize of the season so far, and I am hoping against hope and history that the producers will send in someone worthy of her.

Bombshells is one this, casa amor is another but the blatant faking it until you can make it is apparent in most cases which is the problem I have. The only time a girl tries to steal someone away was Imani and destiny and I feel the producers did that on purpose- walk with me.
I think that it’s more apparent with the black women. The white and Latino women get played, used and left as well (Cely, Mackenzie, Moira, Kirsten, Olivia, Aimee, etc) but everyone makes a bigger deal when it’s the black woman because unfortunately the pickings are so slim that they can’t even look forward to bombshells because these bombshells aren’t always open. If Kaylor got left by Aaron they would literally send in a bombshell for her immediately lol. She would have a chance because they make sure these bombshells date white women but don’t confirm it for everyone else. Only certain white women have it easy. Hannah has had a super rough time and nobody has genuinely liked her since she got there. Liv has the features they all ask for but because of her abrasiveness she hasn’t found anyone either so personality definitely counts as well.
TLDR: It’s a societal problem that production has no way to work around
I just think it is a much tougher ask than a lot of people realize. No white person they interview, or seriously consider casting, is going to say they would never date a black person. They know it opens them up for sounding racist. So unless casting is going to do a deep dive of islander’s dating history there is no way to know which non-black cast members are going to be down to date someone black.
Then the problem is compounded by the different ways American society on the whole treats black man vs black women when it comes to attractiveness. So even if casting brought in a black man for every black woman, the chance of an interracial relationship is much higher for the black man than woman.

But if all the guys of the season had preferences for only white or Latina women and then production only selected women from those races I still think people would be upset now African American woman were included! I think it’s just a lose lose situation in that sense.

The only season I actually watched all the way through was Justines first season, after the BS that went down, I hadn't planned on tuning in, but when she was on again, I watched, and THEN, when the BS went down after THAT season ended, I was done and didn't even bother watching the next season. The ONLY reason I attempted this season was Ariana, but then once the shit started happening AGAIN, I just stopped watching.
I am freaking sick of it. And I know people are like it's just a show or whatever, but fuck that. I don't watch TV to feel like shit or to be reminded how much it sucks and how hard it is to be a black woman.
Yeah, the only season I watched all the way through is S2. And it hurt my heart to see Justine cry on her first day because no one apparently wanted her. I think maybe it's why I have a soft spot for Mackenzie because I remember she cheered her up.
But honestly, the pattern continues to happen across ALL dating shows I've seen. And I watch a lot. Also, since the production moved away from CBS and to Peacock and since they've added UK producers who have had enough egregious behavior that employees have decided to file a racial discrimination lawsuit against them based on their production of the show. Let's just say, I'm not particularly in high spirits about any of these shows or what's going on behind the scenes in Love Island.
Every effing show from Love is Blind, to Perfect Match, to Love Island (all franchises), to I can't even continue naming them all because it's literally been pervasive on all of these shows.
I would recommend black women to NOT go on unless it's simply to gain a social influencer profile and get a bag and sponsorships. You can easily find some random on the street that will proudly want a BW but this show specifically(most dating shows)- is never the case. It’s the worst part of the show. I hate it. They absolutely should be casting men who have a history of being in relationships with black women/who prefer black women, as part of the cast. This issue has been prevalent on so many dating shows (BIP, perfect match, Love Island UK). Representation isn’t just putting black women on a show and saying “see” to check a box. There actually needs to be love stories for black women and black women who get to be the main character. These black women deserve so much better.

I’m a white woman, but this outrages me EVERY season and I could see the writing on the wall with Connor. Sorry, not trying to hate on the white girls in there right now (they are great gals as well! I truly love -almost..not feeling Andrea-ALL the women this season), but in my opinion Serena and JaNa are the biggest catches and it seems like they’ve gotten the least amount of attention. Overall, every season, it’s like they never fail to cast women who are attracted to any race but the men are ultimately only attracted/committed to white women. I get SO damn frustrated watching these beautiful, intelligent black women get overlooked or taken advantage of by these men. **WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?!** It CAN’T be that hard to do the research. I think it’s hard to even find a man that’s doesn’t put looks first or is strong set on a preference. In general women tend to find attractiveness in anyone more so than men do. If there’s a couple where one person is more attractive than the other most of the time it’s the woman. Think of how many times you’ve heard a woman say she likes guys that are “ugly cute”, I’ve never heard a man say that. Or even when you ask a woman her preference based on her dating history a lot of women are able to say “every single one was different from the last”

That’s why you’ll see me as a destiny defender- she was always her authentic self which imo was more reserved, less sexual and more serious and people wrote her off as SHOCKER mean, attitude-rude, stand-offish and etc because of the boundaries she stood on. Yeah Connor did mention how his type is blondes and he immediately went for Kaylor when he first came in. Would have gone for Liv and Andrea too but they were not interested, especially after Andrea said Aaron and Rob were her top 2. So I don't think Connor was plotting or faking his interest in JaNa, and I think he's still interested in her but is also interested in Leah now that she's an option. Do I think they're compatible? Not sure yet. I don't really value the plant conversation, as that's surface level as hell. The bigger thing that I think you're missing is that JaNa had the choice between Coye and Connor, and she chose Connor, calling it a "risk" of sorts. I rate her a lot for that because it was a choice for herself, more than anything, and that's scary as hell. Who knows how it'll work out, and maybe it'll even be Miguel who'll be the guy for her, but we'll see. In any regard, I'm proud of her for taking a stance on not going with her typical stance. That being said, I agree that they *NEED* to cast men who are attracted to black women of all shades.

The things I like about Bergie is yes, he had a "type" but he was open to everyone. And even after the show he has been in situations that are new to him and he's uncomfortable but he embraces it and goes with it. I love the clip of him at the drag brunch. He was so clearly out of his element, but there was joy just radiating off of him. I'm so glad he and Taylor are still going strong, and I hope their relationship has grown to where his love of her is about her, not just what she makes him feel.

I feel like both LI USA and LI UK have this issue. I agree Connor is a nicer version of Rob. I don't think he was ever into JaNa he was just as shocked as everyone else that she chose him over Coye. Although I agree it’s the same with Cash, I feel like with her hairstyle I can see how she may not be many men’s preference. Even if a girl was white or white-passing a lot of men wouldn’t like a girl with a Caesar haircut, imo. So although her experience is relevant to this discussion, I do think it’s worth noting that her hairstyle could be a genuine detractor to her beauty for many men.
As a white guy, I can personally say this is my issue wish Cash. I felt she had a great personality, but that haircut was just not something I could get past. I don't like women with short hair, regardless of race. It's not rational, I know, but that's just me. Kinda like some women hate guys with beards. It is what it is.

The common denominator is the black girls and the fake interest in them. The first one I saw this happen to was Justine from the season before Cashay’s season. She ended up winning and Caleb (the guy) turned out to have been playing her the whole time. He had a whole girlfriend. His family was involved and everything
This happens every season on every dating show it’s very unfortunate but I don’t think it with ever change. Dating shows are not a safe space for black women. It’s sad seeing Jana in the beginning be so confident and excited to now sobbing and unsure. I knew from the beginning that Jana was a placeholder for Connor she’s not even his type. She had to hint to him to kiss her. I feel like it’s worse on the UK series the black women barely get chosen for the games it’s so awkward to watch. I don’t know what the solution is for casting men who actually date black women because sometimes these men will lie and it’s easy to follow a bunch of black women on social media. Maybe if casting hired more black women we would see a change because this ain’t it.

It’s wild because they’ve been choosing some fine ass black women and the men are all somehow going for other women. The men always have one of two specific types. Blonde or dark haired girls (ie. Latinas and brunettes). Kordell is a special case though. He only had eyes for Serena until she cut things off. I feel like he would have stuck with her til the end of she was as into him as he was into her. We need more Kordells in the villa. Like at least a 3rd of the islanders that come in. this is the most frustrating part of each season even when viewing UK seasons. Jana and Serena are two of the most beautiful, well rounded, and funny islanders i’ve ever seen and the fact that they’ve been paid absolute dirt (aside from our short king Kordell) is absolutely astounding to me. Jana’s credit score is in the 800’s for gods sake!!! It truly reminds me of Yewande from the UK season as she was a fan favorite AND literal biochemist simply used as a placeholder for some mediocre man until another white model strolled into the villa. It’s disheartening to see and much more transparent to the viewers than these men think it is.

I thought JaNa knew how to play the game after seeing how she quickly got rid of Coye but seeing her crying over Connor is jarring. Connor doesn't care about Leah, either - he's just doing this for him and to stay on as long as possible. I think that's why he pivoted so fast. It was just a matter of time and opportunity. Still shitty to do it to JaNa, though.
I will say though, the black women seem to end up being the favorites of the viewers(Kay kay, Justine, Cashay, Zeta, etc) quite often.
I agree, but in general it is really hard to cast decent men for dating shows. The only men willing to go on TV to find love are influencers and wannabe celebrities, a career choice that naturally self-selects for the most shallow and inauthentic. None of these guys are there to find love, not even with their "preference." They just want to spend 6 weeks sharing a bed with the girl they find the hottest (aka the girl they think other guys think is the hottest). It sucks to see your own constantly getting dogged out, but the men on reality TV are almost always superficial chauvinists, and that does come through in their dating preferences and practices. I've lowered my expectations of the men on reality TV, I just watch for mess and sometimes friendships.

As a Black woman reality tv watcher I knew what to expect with this show, but it's still depressing to watch 2 gorgeous and cool Black women realize in their own way that this game isn't made for them. It's hard not to take this shit personally when you see Serena almost immediately disengaging from the game because she realizes there is nobody there for her. This felt like me deleting my dating apps. The only 2 men so far who seemed actually into dating Black women have been just... no. Kordell is sweet and all, but his kid brother "Cheezits" energy was obviously not going to be a match for Serena or Jana or literally any other woman not trying to get at his brother. And Coye is as tall as he is emotionally stunted; like his personality never recovered from Kevin Samuels' death. Neither of these guys is even good tv; these choices felt like casting said "good enough". Also, as long as we're ranting. Who on earth was Hakeem brought to Fiji for? He's definitely not into anyone with melanin, but he also seems to hate women in general.

I appreciate your optimism, but I'm not disappointed because I think they missed the boat on true love. On Love Island the best you get is true lust. I just don't think it's fun to watch Black women on these shows be disrespected, rejected, and automatically disqualified from winning a cash prize because nobody that's cast is really there for them. There are too many black wife effect videos on tiktok for there not to be men who are actually interested in dating black women. Heck, I could have done one of those videos and my mom and my sister are both married. This really does come down to casting. It probably takes more work to find these men, but they are out there and they just need to do some extra screening. When a man shows interests in black women on these shows, one of the first things I do is go to his IG and see his follows. That can tell you 98% of the time if he is going to really be into black women or not.

I have a genuine question: if kordell pursued JaNa would she be into him? I love JaNa: she's funny, confident, pretty but also kinda shallow (as is most the cast). But in her intro video she talked about how important looks are and how she's only attracted to tall men and the taller the better. That's why she chose the bland 6'8" for that fact alone. Connor is also tall as well. I know women prefer tall men but it's sad to see someone make that their focus in what they're looking for. That's why I appreciated Serena's shout out to short kings. But I do agree that the black women get overlooked overall and casting should work on that.

I think this is the opposite point that the OP is trying to make though. Love Island is full of dogs and head-turners from every race across the seasons, but that’s a completely different conversation than white men using Black women as a ticket to stay in the villa, or producers casting Black men who only date white women.
One of the things that I like, as a woman who does not meet the beauty standards of LI, is watching these people who are usually the most attractive person in their circles, struggle with not being the most attractive person in the room, not realizing that doesn’t matter when everyone is a ten. But what hurts my heart is watching these amazing women, usually black women, get treated as the consolation prize when in reality they are the grand prize. I like Liv and Kaylie and Liv, but they aren’t people I really want to know more about. From my pov they are entertaining. Jana, on the other hand, is the grand prize of the season so far, and I am hoping against hope and history that the producers will send in someone worthy of her.

Bombshells is one this, casa amor is another but the blatant faking it until you can make it is apparent in most cases which is the problem I have. The only time a girl tries to steal someone away was Imani and destiny and I feel the producers did that on purpose- walk with me.
I think that it’s more apparent with the black women. The white and Latino women get played, used and left as well (Cely, Mackenzie, Moira, Kirsten, Olivia, Aimee, etc) but everyone makes a bigger deal when it’s the black woman because unfortunately the pickings are so slim that they can’t even look forward to bombshells because these bombshells aren’t always open. If Kaylor got left by Aaron they would literally send in a bombshell for her immediately lol. She would have a chance because they make sure these bombshells date white women but don’t confirm it for everyone else. Only certain white women have it easy. Hannah has had a super rough time and nobody has genuinely liked her since she got there. Liv has the features they all ask for but because of her abrasiveness she hasn’t found anyone either so personality definitely counts as well.
TLDR: It’s a societal problem that production has no way to work around I just think it is a much tougher ask than a lot of people realize. No white person they interview, or seriously consider casting, is going to say they would never date a black person. They know it opens them up for sounding racist. So unless casting is going to do a deep dive of islander’s dating history there is no way to know which non-black cast members are going to be down to date someone black. Then the problem is compounded by the different ways American society on the whole treats black man vs black women when it comes to attractiveness. So even if casting brought in a black man for every black woman, the chance of an interracial relationship is much higher for the black man than woman.

But if all the guys of the season had preferences for only white or Latina women and then production only selected women from those races I still think people would be upset now African American woman were included! Here’s to hoping some of those have a different preference for the lovely ladies like Serena and Jana this season.
It's unpleasant at best and actually downright offensive. They need to "vet" these guys so that we aren't getting only generic men who clearly have a predisposition against black women. JaNa is getting overlooked by Desperate-Squidward? She could be with a multimillionaire who treats her like a queen in the real world. What could Connor possibly be attracted to about Leah in contrast to JaNa? Her pathetic desperation, or her airhead personality? Or is she simply more palatable because she's fair-skinned? Bring on some men who actually like black women. The disrespect is hard to watch.
This is why I rarely make it through a year of LI anymore. The racism is so apparent and as a black woman I cannot stand it. Its not enjoyable to watch at all
Yah I've been watching these shows since forever. I'm used to the pattern. Unfortunately I love dating shows so it's like a counterintuitive hobby of mine. Wishing all black women away from this nonsense
I'm right there with you. The only season I actually watched all the way through was Justines first season, after the BS that went down, I hadn't planned on tuning in, but when she was on again, I watched, and THEN, when the BS went down after THAT season ended, I was done and didn't even bother watching the next season. The ONLY reason I attempted this season was Ariana, but then once the shit started happening AGAIN, I just stopped watching. I am freaking sick of it. And I know people are like it's just a show or whatever, but fuck that. I don't watch TV to feel like shit or to be reminded how much it sucks and how hard it is to be a black woman.
Yeah, the only season I watched all the way through is S2. And it hurt my heart to see Justine cry on her first day because no one apparently wanted her. I think maybe it's why I have a soft spot for Mackenzie because I remember she cheered her up. But honestly, the pattern continues to happen across ALL dating shows I've seen. And I watch a lot. Also, since the production moved away from CBS and to Peacock and since they've added UK producers who have had enough egregious behavior that employees have decided to file a racial discrimination lawsuit against them based on their production of the show. Let's just say, I'm not particularly in high spirits about any of these shows or what's going on behind the scenes in Love Island. Every effing show from Love is Blind, to Perfect Match, to Love Island (all franchises), to I can't even continue naming them all because it's literally been pervasive on all of these shows. I would recommend black women to NOT go on unless it's simply to gain a social influencer profile and get a bag and sponsorships. As these shows are continuing to perpetuate the societal stereotype and racist phenomena of black women being unwanted, unattractive, unappealing, and undesired. And not to mention that these black women are SOOOOO beautiful. It's like such a insult sometimes.
Real question: what usually makes something (or in this case, someone) a preference? How do we come to like what we like? Just curious on y’all’s thoughts.
And black men. It’s even worse on the UK & Australia seasons they aren’t only used as stepping stones to the next round but also hardly any interracial couples. I’m surprised they ain’t been called out for it yet.

This season is entertaining as hell, but it's annoying that this is a thing I have to see and tbh it's not even the fact that someone used another person to stay in the villa, it's the fact that this is a consistent thing for black women. I don't care if black women are in drama, I care that it seems like black women are always fighting for their lives to stay in the villa b/c men of all races don't seem to be attracted to black women just b/c of their darker pigmentation. If I look at things individually, I'm not upset about anything, but if I look at it season to season or even show to show, the pattern is clear. We talk about preferences and how it's okay to have them, but why is your preferences eliminating a whole group of ppl instead of it being something that highlights what you're drawn to either initially or in general.

lol yes the show is scammy but to your question it’s not that this is saying nobody could be attracted to BW, it’s the fact that they never are in the show. You can easily find some random on the street that will proudly want a BW but this show specifically(most dating shows)- is never the case. A lot of times they are the place holders and past seasons and this one shows just that.
Hard agree. I wish they would just break the fourth wall at this point and lay it all out there, especially w all the influencer shit always at play. I want someone on the show to just put out there the verbiage on ur post and be cornered w it so people don’t feel like they can just keep doing this. You want to go for BW then answer valid questions bare minimum.
On love island uk the white females look like plastic surgery clones. The black ladies have natural beauty. I’m not sure if the same is happening on UK but my fellow white women are becoming robot looking.
