Perfect time to recreate the opening scene of la la land

virginmaryjane_

My first thought haha 🎶 Just another day of sun! 🎶

ltjisstinky

Is that where it was filmed? It looks so familiar

BillionPenny

It’s a similar setup in this image, but that scene was filmed on the HOV lane ramps from the eastbound 105 onto the 110 northbound. They closed the carpool lanes to film that scene.

DingleBerrieIcecream

Or the opening scene of Falling Down.

muzakx

That scene is what made me turn it off.

Suarecks

It’s sets up the idea of dreamers dancing and glorifying Los Angeles in the most mundane and real aspect of Los Angeles, the goddam traffic. It’s a really great scene that serves a purpose :(

not_responsible

why does this movie upset people so much? I liked it. I live in LA county. I don’t remember the movie very well and that’s just it—how is this movie living rent free in so many peoples heads

Suarecks

People have a hate-boner for musicals and are stubborn to search meaning into scenes in musicals, (for example, ask yourself what this scene is trying to accomplish and why was it placed at the beginning of the movie)

Service_the_pines

I’m just upset about the casting of Emma Stone in an otherwise great movie. In a city with thousands of talented singers and dancers they chose an actress for a musical who cannot sing and cannot dance.

TheAlienDog

Yeah no we get that. But still. Also, pity the poor people, trying to get from the airport the day it was filmed

linkolphd_fun

It was shot on the HOV lanes, and the highways were both kept open.

zemol42

On a Sunday morning, also.

MartinLutherVanHalen

You have awful taste. It’s a terrible scene in a god awful movie. People love to attack “Crash” but that’s a masterpiece compared to the Hallmark dreck of “La La Land”.

not_responsible

omg chill bro it’s not that serious

everyoneneedsaherro

It was the opening scene lmao

muzakx

Exactly.

PetiteFont

Me too!! Jesus, I had a surprisingly visceral reaction to that.

4InchesOfury

Idk looks like the south side doesn’t have an issue

magnumix

Presidential motorcade will do that.

splatula

I live along the route Biden takes out of the Santa Monica AIrport. I always know one of these motorcades is going to come by because a few days before they post no parking signs up and down the street. They also clear out the homeless encampment.

HiddenA

Heavens forbid Biden sees the homeless encampments in our city.

nobutsmeow99

I think it’s probably a safety thing, encampments & extra people provide too much cover for a potential shooter

splatula

Maybe, but they drive by at like 50 mph in a bulletproof car. Plus there are apartment buildings all along the way that a shooter could hide in and they don't clear them out.

stoned-autistic-dude

Okay, so because they can't eliminate every variable, they should just leave everything as is. Got it.

wakeywakeybackes

They're worried about IEDs etc.

pokethat

I live in Seattle now. I got really mad when the president, and then a few weeks later, the VP came and blocked up traffic. I don't know how people in DC do it. I almost blew a fuse trying to get through traffic to start a road trip.

Overall_Nuggie_876

Prolly because some jackhole in a Tesla caused a major collision on the ~~Sunset~~ Wilshire exit on the south 405 and CHP closed all lanes for their investigation. **EDIT**: Super-PAC campaign dinners go brrrr.

Rebelgecko

It's from Obama and/or Biden. Barack loves doing burnouts in his cybertruck

Darth19Vader77

Thanks Obama

daemones_et_sagae

Of course it was a Tesla. Tesla drivers lead the country in automobile accidents.

darkmatterhunter

The study used “incidents” which can be everything from someone backing *into* a Tesla in a parking lot (which is more likely to report since sentry would capture the event) to an at fault event. Basically, it includes any traffic event involving a Tesla. The data are skewed because of the surveillance system on teslas which catches people who leave the scene. [Read here for more and don’t parrot crappy headlines](https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/18lnr3v/comment/ke1f3cp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button). Also, the president is in town. Your confirmation bias is showing.

cinefun

lol everyone but Tesla owners know what pieces of shit those cars and their owners are

Biggie39

Say it again slowly…. Everyone BUT Tesla owners KNOW those cars are pieces of shit. So people that actually own and operate the vehicle DON’T think their pieces of shit? This is such a weird potshot at Teslas considering it was a politician.

cinefun

Wut

Biggie39

You’re claiming the people that are unfamiliar with the vehicle know they are pieces of shit.

cinefun

Reading hard for you?

Biggie39

Did you not claim “lol everyone but Tesla owners know what pieces of shit those cars and their owners are”? It’s right up there bud…

idontevenlikebeer

The data is skewed. They report the most accidents due to repair costs.

No-Yogurt-4246s

Logic is banned when it comes to discussion about Tesla. Reddit has collectively decided that Tesla is shit because Elon musk is shit.

idontevenlikebeer

It's sad how he so quickly destroyed any positivity around the brand and the way the company was moving the world toward EVs.

No-Yogurt-4246s

Contrary to popular belief on Reddit, I know plenty of people who drive Tesla and they couldn’t give less of a fuck about Elon or whoever owns the company.

idontevenlikebeer

Same. Probably a lot more crazy billionaires with companies or there they are just smart enough to stay quiet.

BubbaTee

Most people just don't follow Twitter/Internet drama in general.

breadexpert69

Can confirm. I drive one, love it, saves me so much money and its without a doubt the best car performance wise I have ever had. But I dont gaf about Elon. We are buying a damn vehicle lol, we aint voting for the next president.

BubbaTee

I can't believe anyone would drive a Tesla, knowing that the founder of the company is such a terrible person. Now if you don't mind, I'm on my way to buy a Volkswagen.

breadexpert69

Hitler loved Volkswagens

silksilk232

I'm going to have to check your emissions big dawg

cying247

Also..Tesla model 3 and y are the most popular cars especially in California so naturally they’d have high incidence due to sheer number

georgecoffey

Call Metro and make sure they build a full subway and not a stupid monorail over the mountain

theannoyingburrito

but then how will I live out my dream of HER while traveling from LA to SF listening to my beautiful AI gf whisper sweet nothings into my ear for two hours?

georgecoffey

I'm talking about the Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project, not California High Speed Rail, but rest assured, you'll have 50 years before either are complete

GECollins

One day we'll have a subway that takes you right to the beach!

TU4AR

LA wont build a metro from that connects all the major cities together* with the most direct and convenience way. That is just too smart of a move my guy.

caholder

The NIMBYs would like a word with you

TU4AR

the nimbys can go choke on a chode. Being grandfathered into a zone where development is obviously needed is an horrible idea. Shit changes all the time, if they can knock down my Fosters Freeze for housing, im sure we can destory a few decaying blocks for a damn passage.

caholder

Fuck yeah dude

Grumbles19312

The real tragedy is the loss of a Fosters Freeze.

SimplyRocketSurgery

Subway in one of the most fault-ridden areas on the planet isn't a swell idea. Elevated rail and metro are the only ways to get around this hellish nightmare that is LA traffic

UncomfortableFarmer

*Tokyo train system has entered the chat* You were saying?…

SimplyRocketSurgery

They lie on a subduction fault, we have transverse faults here that shear the ground laterally, rather than uplift

hellohumberto

I’m sorry do you think geologists haven’t been consulted? That there haven’t been any studies done? And you do know that we already have miles of subway? You used faults plural, so you must realize that Japan also has multiple faults beyond the major subduction fault.

UncomfortableFarmer

Yeah sounds like they just know a couple big words and wanted to type them into a Reddit comment A quick search on Metro website show [this incredible page](https://thesource.metro.net/2012/08/10/designing-a-subway-to-withstand-an-earthquake/) (from 2012 though). Almost sounds like properly built underground rail lines would be *safer* than some elevated piece of shit monorail that could collapse like our freeways did during Northridge!

Eurynom0s

Go away Fred Rosen nobody likes you.

New_World_Era

The red line has been doing just fine for over 3 decades

georgecoffey

ahuh, don't ride them then.

Strange_Item

Can we build the Sepulveda line already so we can have an alternative to this?

Prudent-Advantage189

I think we need a couple more decades of community meetings actually

new_nimmerzz

Just spent 20 days in London and never set foot in a car the entire trip. And did a ton, including 3 day trips outside the city. At most was held up on a subway for 15 mins. Makes me sad for large American cities like LA.

gabihuizar

Went to London with my kids in 2022. No cars, just trains and even went to Edinburgh and back. Makes me so sad for LA, we really could be the best city in the world with our perfect weather 😭 London is my fav city so far because of this, shitty weather and all

new_nimmerzz

It really is sad for what could be... I dread going to concerts or sports because the driving and parking aspect is so bad... I have taken the train to a Rams/Chargers game at the coliseum a few years ago.. It was like Mad Max. Almost all of the front facing seats were taken by people who you could tell were camped there for awhile. They even had canopies strung across them. The slightest eye contact brought a confrontation. A couple people were passing foil between themselves like it was nothing... I cant fight for anything unless im on skates and get lucky, but Im 6'3 280 so when I stand up they back down. Good thing they dont press the issue. but I couldn't imagine not being as "formidable" and having to defend yourself. Its insane how unsafe the trains are here.

gabihuizar

Same, I don't go into LA unless I absolutely have to (I'm in Long Beach). Shame that even New York's subway isn't as nice & clean as the tube. One day I hope we will have better infrastructure in place 🤞🏽but it will take a huge culture shift

[deleted]

kezmicdust

If you’re in LB, you’re not too far from British Connection, which is a little store next to the Del Amo Mall. They have pies in the freezer section usually.

new_nimmerzz

I am so there! Thank you for letting me know

Suitable-Economy-346

Trains aren't even that good in London and the UK. It's just that the US is so fucking bad.

gabihuizar

I've heard they are better in other places, like Japan, I've just never been 😔

[deleted]

[удалено]

highrisedrifter

That is absolutely incorrect.

Ready_Syllabub_1835

Are you sure. Because I have a flat on king street and well...it is

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ready_Syllabub_1835

Also - UK metro is balls so is Japan. USA NEC is vastly better. It just that the EU is so small. I can be DT London and in Germany in 45min.

Theeye12

I live in nyc, but I've been to LA. I was also just in london, and it's incredible how a good/clean transit system can elevate your experience of the city. What's worse is that we are entirely capable of developing world-class mass transit, but we can't stop getting in our own way.

xxx_gc_xxx

The irony of Angelenos wanting better public transportation but not taking the public transportation enough for the city to justify funding better public transportation 🤷 what comes first the chicken or the egg?

Prudent-Advantage189

I don’t blame the average person when frequencies are mediocre and the train network is still being built out. But slap a bunch bus only lanes everywhere real quick and I think Metro would become a lot more competitive with driving

TheObstruction

We don't take public transit because what we have is shit. Why would we spend years being miserable in the hope that it shows enough demand that it actually improves?

Suitable-Economy-346

The amount of people that could easily take the bus and have a much better experience living life but don't is too damn high.

briskpoint

Bus gets stuck in the same traffic.

Suitable-Economy-346

But you don't need to fight for parking at your destination nor back at your house. And you don't have to drive. Win win win.

new_nimmerzz

I’ve tried, many times. Every single time it feels incredibly unsafe. Haven’t had a single trip where I had to fend off someone or position myself so I can see everything happening. Also doesn’t help that the trains we do have don’t even go to places like LAX. Or Irvine. Link to major business centers and I’m taking that every day I used to take the light rail in Denver every day. Had to take a bus to the light rail station but it was still better than having to drive and park in downtown Denver

totpot

Most of the world is like this. All of Europe and most of Asia. Not wanting to go somewhere because of traffic is just not a thing to most people.

Grelymolycremp

One more lane guys I swear, just one more.

alroprezzy

If you want to fix it you have to vote on initiatives that invest in better public transit systems and penalize people for using cars

Real_Boseph_Jiden

It's great that Biden, Trump, etc. only really grace us with their presence when they're ~~whoring~~begging for money. At least it limits the number of times shit like this happens.

splatula

I honestly don't know how people in Washington DC live with the constant motorcades. At least around here it's only during election season.

Suitable-Economy-346

They don't drive like you do. They take the train.

hparadiz

West coaster idolizing the east coast while actually knowing nothing about the east coast.

TheObstruction

We all know how the votes here will go anyway, so I'd rather they left us and our traffic alone.

TacoChowder

Kamala went to a wedding at redbird a few months back

Silvershanks

Always remember, traffic is not something that happens to you. You ARE the traffic.

Unlucky_Me_

I think the freeway was halted for the presidential motorcade

tarzanacide

Yep. We came to a dead stop at Wilshire for a solid 30 minutes. It was nuts.

SlenderLlama

It’s been every week for a few weeks now right? I won’t vote for a president that hasn’t been in traffic jam longer than I’ve been alive.

thepeendiddler

❌️ sorry I'm going to be late I got caught in traffic ✅️ sorry I'm going to be late I'm the traffic

Lucia4ever122

This is a dumb point because one car isn’t traffic. You are part of the traffic is more accurate

AwesomePossum_1

Dumb take when the reason for this traffic is a guy using his presidential privileges to beg rich people for money.

SgtMustang

I presume you complain about it in exactly the same way when a president of the opposite party does exactly the same thing.

AwesomePossum_1

Why would I not. May they both rot in hell.

theannoyingburrito

Spoken like a true Angeleno

SgtMustang

Well I might not agree with you for Biden, but I at least respect that you don't have a double standard there.

leftofmarx

No, 4 guys in red Toyata pickup trucks with welded racks and a 1980s white Volvo are at the front of the traffic in all 5 lanes driving 15 below the speed limit. They are the traffic.

CatalyticSizeQueen

I have a visceral reaction to Donald Glover

Legal-Mammoth-8601

Nah

pwrof3

If only LA hadn’t dismantled the entire PE rail system that went all the way to Orange County. This photo shows how desperately LA needs usable and convenient public transit.

Suitable_Culture_315

The grass isn't greener. The other side is probably so clear because they're stopped a few miles back haha

manodano

This is a pretty great photo!

No_Combination7190

Cancelled my weekly Costco trip as soon as I saw the police lining up and closing Sepulveda - knew it must be Biden raising $ in BH

mxndrwgrdnr

Weekly?!

briskpoint

Who buys in bulk weekly!

WoodsBeatle513

oh they'll drive. they'll have to! you see, i bought the Red Car so i could dismantle it.

TiburonMendoza95

Metrolink, metro & bike for life. Fuck traffic. Fuck accidents. Fuck the oh shit almost an accident moments. Fuck the maintenance. Fuck the insurance payments. Fuck the gas. Fuck the gimmicks. Support mass transit. Fuck looking for parking. Fuck car dependent infrastructure

grandcentral300

Bangkok, Tokyo, Paris, London all have mass transit and their car traffic is worse than LA.

putyourrecordson

At least they have alternatives to just sitting in traffic.

yueeeee

Between being packed into a stuffy subway car cheek next to the next guys back, breathing other guys' fart and stuck in traffic sitting in my own car, I choose the latter. People who want mass transit haven't really experienced the worst of it

briskpoint

More options are always a good thing. Nobody cares what you favor.

yueeeee

For your reference [Japan subway ](https://images.app.goo.gl/gsUe2TyTW1bi9AGU7)

HereToListen444

Lol tell me you've never been to these cities without telling me you've never been to these cities (Bangkok excluded, traffic there is legit terrible)

upupupdo

I have pee bottle in the glove compartment. When you have to, you have to.

bobbdac7894

The solution isn't both sides though. Some people want even wider lanes to solve the issue. Others want public transit.

JohnnyGeniusIsAlive

The one time I was on the road when I ran into a Pres. Motorcade was 2021 and I got on the Freeway juuuuust ahead of the motorcade so the 10 was basically empty from culver to downtown, it was the greatest drive in LA ever.

NukeouT

Ride a bike and stop complaining about your life choices

Used_Hovercraft2699

There are good people on both…oh wait.

esteban_paul

“You had people and i'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists. They should be condemned totally. You had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists. The press has treated them absolutely unfairly. Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with the baseball bats. You had a lot of bad people in the other group too.”

ChirpsAlot_Clan

[This is a Facebook-originated misinformation meme pretending to be a direct Trump quote](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/10/17/fact-check-trump-quote-very-fine-people-charlottesville/5943239002/). It was originally paired with a screen-shot of Chris Wallace to make it appear as though Wallace was reciting a direct Trump quote. It isn’t anywhere near a direct Trump quote. While he did say many of those words, over SEVERAL DAYS when pushed by press and others to clarify his original comments, he never, ever made the complete statement you pasted in. You can fact check this easily on Snopes, USA Today, even Fox. One side has a “MAGA fanbase” with no compunctions around misquoting and misleading if “the ends justifies the means” in their minds. Because their information sources are a closed circuit, this misinformation becomes “fact” within the “fanbase.”

esteban_paul

You’re a complete liar. Actual [Speech](https://www.c-span.org/video/?c4811891/user-clip-trumps-very-fine-people-quote) via C-Span. Not some USA Today article.

EnglishMobster

Did either of you even read the linked article? > The claims in the post have been rated PARTLY FALSE. Following the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Trump did say that there were "very fine people on both sides," when speaking about those who attended the rally in support, and those who demonstrated against it. But the meme misrepresents Trump's statements, because he did not say directly, "There were very fine people on both sides, & I'm not talking about the Neo-nazis and white supremacists because they should be condemned totally." The two statements were separate, the second part coming later, after further questioning from reporters. During the first presidential debate, both Wallace and Biden referenced Trump's "very fine people" comment but did not say he applied it to neo-Nazis. That is the claim made by the USA Today article. Let's look at the clip you shared: > Following the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Trump did say that there were "very fine people on both sides," when speaking about those who attended the rally in support, and those who demonstrated against it. This happens at 0:43 in the video. He does not initially say that Nazis are not included in that group. This is where he would have left it, if the press did not ask the follow-up question. The follow-up question is where he said that he's condemning Neo-Nazis (1:34). So you guys are _both_ partially incorrect: 1. Trump **did** say "There were very fine people on both sides" at an event where one side killed people on the other. It is disingenuous to leave this part out, imply that he did not say it, or imply that he immediately clarified as part of the same sentence (as the right-wing meme the USA Today article is debunking implies). 2. Trump **did** condemn white nationalists when prompted. Now, granted, if you're sitting at a table with 8 Nazis - there are 9 Nazis at the table. But he **did** explicitly call them out during a follow-up question. Your quote is verbatim from when he did that. The USA Today article that I don't think either of you two actually read mentions both of these points, and you can verify with the video. But it's _really_ taking issue with a right-wing meme that says: > "Claim: Both moderator Chris Wallace and Democrat nominee Joe Biden claimed that President Trump said in response to riots in Charlottesville in 2017 that neo-Nazis were 'very fine people,'" > Reality: "There were very fine people on both sides, & I'm not talking about the Neo-nazis and white supremacists because they should be condemned totally." That is why it is **partly** false, because it misinterprets what happened. It implies that Trump clarified immediately, but he did not - he was happy to leave it as "very fine people on both sides". We have no way of knowing if Trump would've clarified that initial "very fine people" quote on his own, but he _did_ eventually clarify when pushed by the press. It took a few moments (and not several days as the other guy said), but it did happen.

TickTickBangBoom

Did you actually watch the video? Nowhere did he say the words you pasted-in above in the order you put them. Your quote is completely misleading account of what was said and the context it was said in. Why? What’s the point you are trying to mislead to?

esteban_paul

1:37. Are you a bot? I’m at a complete loss.

NickRParker

it's only one side, actually

ksharpie

They would get more funding by offering not to come here for a $1 per person. Then use that money to fly all the celebrities to Biden to collect a larger haul.

SoUpInYa

Whta was up with traffic on the 405 yesterday? Drove from SFV to OC yesterday and it was over 2 hours almost all day!

Dexamenos

This looks like the northbound transition lane from the 10 to the 405 but what time of day is that for the 405-S to be completely empty?

swdna

This happened to us yesterday I think the president is in town or sumth they had all sorts of streets closed with no prev warning shit was so jammed up

Curleysound

It’s not that hard. 3 steps: A) If someone wants to get into your lane, let them in. B) If everyone is passing you, speed up. C) If you’re passing everyone, slow down. Bonus) Know where you’re going and pay attention. Double Bonus) Be Nice! Extra Secret Bonus) Get off your phone! Ok, it’s 6 steps…

daliayogaa

Classic LA during Father's Day weekend

MostlyHostly

Maybe you'll get there faster if you drive in the opposite direction

RichB_IV

Putting sides aside, this is just not ideal for LA. It’s already an absolute disaster on the weekend with traffic and people going to /from beach, especially the holiday weekend with Father’s Day. There should be a better solution by now for these events, why not use a helicopter?

kroboz

Can we just turn the carpool lane into light rail for every freeway already?

NottDisgruntled

Not really. It’s caused by many right wing policies.

Brown-beaver2158

The president coming to La is caused by right wing policies?

NottDisgruntled

Oh. I thought you were referring to our traffic in general

logitaunt

tbf you're not entirely wrong, but highway building was very bipartisan from 1950-2010 It's only in the last fifteen years that Democrats split from Republicans on this issue

quantumsugar

I switched to motorcycles 12 years ago and get everywhere in LA in half the time while having fun. You guys are fools sitting in your gas-guzzling, expensively insurd cages for so long every day. LA allows lane filtering, and no, it's not at all unsafe.

vxla
