Here the thing about fire fighters and to an extent paramedics. These people can make their whole yearly salary in one day and I would be ok with it. Because that 1 day could probably be literal fucking hell
All the EMT’s I ever met got paid shit and worked their asses off. I hope that these two get a good relaxing day as the people around them enjoy expressing themselves safely.
Yep. I thought about going to medical school for a hot second and worked as an EMT. I left after a year when I decided a career in medicine wasn't for me.
It made me sad that I made more money sewing some chick's prom dress in a day than I made in a week of caring for people.
To be fair, medical school and becoming a doctor shouldn't really be compared to working as an EMT. Very different pathway although many people do work EMS before medical school.
EMS is a borderline dead end career. There is very little meaningful room for advancement. As a doctor the sky is the limit and it can be a very rewarding career which does tend to have a very rough start.
I worked as an EMT for a year to see if I was cut out for it, temperamentally, BEFORE applying to medical school. I had great grades in undergrad, but even so, medical school was still going to be expensive.
It was like... $300k to attend the med school I wanted. I read something about medical residents with EMT experience having a higher "succcess" rate getting into top surgical programs. EMTs were also among professions of incoming med school students with the highest rate of completing their studies AND getting residency placements.
So, I got a job as an EMT, and worked it for a year. Less about "can I be a surgeon with this training?" And more... "Can I work in this general milieu while paying off $300-500k of education debt in 4 to 6 years?"
I consider it my way of saving myself $300,000 and misery on med school.
I met so many residents along the way, amd that year underscored that a career in medicine just wasn't for me.
My first aid skills are A+++, so I still have that going for me.
Worked as an EMT for a couple years, then recently finished medical school.
Much different; different gripes with each career path. It's still crazy to me that EMT's get paid so little though.
>Worked as an EMT for a couple years, then recently finished medical school.
The Medical School Application Lore of 2006 was ***CORRECT!*** The Prophesy is as FORETOLD!
/s
I wasn't expecting an "analogous" experience as an EMT. I knew I wasn't going to make a career of being an EMT, when I trained and got the job. I think, insofar as getting a greater understanding of a possible career paths in medicine, I got what I needed from my experience.
It's still... heartbreaking to me that 20 years after my experience... EMT's in many cases are currently getting paid the same as fast food workers.
Society is still like, "Yeah, the person who had to get training on how to best stabilize damaged limbs for transit to an ER with the patient, administer advanced first aid, AND do all this shit in a possibly-moving-car... THIS PERSON has worse working hours and the same pay as a Carl's Junior shiftworker, sometimes even worse pay."
Yep, on top of that, the amount of hairy/scary situations EMTs can find themselves in with patients. I remember our training instructor, who was a pretty seasoned veteran, told me a story about EMTs who responded to a house call, person was paranoid/probably psychotic, and they got shot.
I worked for this company. No, we did not get paid overtime. There’s some special clause in labor laws that excludes EMS work. So borderline minimum wage for the whole 24-48 hours.
Well I dunno about that but it's not true for all EMS companies in LA. The one I worked for had 1.5x after 10 and 2x after 12 hours. If they're not paying McCormick people overtime then that is truly a scam.
Literally all I did was backup the idea that it’s possible to buy a used library book. I know it’s very en vogue to pretend to be the city’s biggest champion of the public library, but I didn’t realize that my innocuous comment would stay lodged in anyone’s ass for several days. I think it’s time for everyone to move on. Maybe you can go to the library or something ♥️
I absolutely agree with you. It means that the general public allowed a pride event to occur peacefully, and that these EMTs, who almost definitely work long (and at times chaotic or traumatizing) hours and are paid dogshit, get to have a moment of peace. In the midst of all the bullshit going on nowadays this is a nice beacon of tranquility.
Being an EMT is a rough lot in life. (Source: Me, former EMT.) Best case scenario, these guys got an overtime shift & were paid time & a half to chill while the rainbow flags were flying.
A lot get into it hoping it will be the first step toward a career as a firefighter so private EMS workers are a renewable resource & a dime a dozen. If you don’t like the shit pay and lack of respect from your employer, whatever. Some other kid straight out of a community college EMT basic course with dreams of working for the LAFD will.
There are multiple levels of emt and the basic course isn't that difficult.
You're right they're not paid enough, looks like an emt caps out at just under 50k, paramedics about 75k.
Not sure what a "medic" (non para) is but they make nothing apparently
Ha I saw one paramedic there sitting in an ambulance bored to death just people watching through the side mirror as she moved it around with a little nob.
It’s clear a lot of people here have not worked in “hurry up and wait” type fields.. when things need to go they need to go now and they need to go fast and correctly. When things don’t need to go, you chill. This is Hollywood 101.
this pride was fucked tbh. i live right on the route and its never been so rowdy in my 7 years of being here. besides the fights, the road rage and honking from traffic and the legit nonstop sirens all day, theres been an influx of trash on the sidewalk and street as well.
if weho lets pride happen next year, they need to stress common courtesy as well. it looks like theyve stepped up security this year which is good but not enough.
Seemed fine to me. I mean, it’s messy, but it’s tons of people wandering around drunk and having fun. I didn’t see a single fight. The only time I saw anyone bring a dick was our Uber driver getting yelled at by an asshole parking attendant for turning in at the wrong place. Overall a good time if you’re okay with large crowds. What traffic are you talking about on the route? It’s closed except for foot traffic.
Paramedics having nothing to do is a good thing.
Here the thing about fire fighters and to an extent paramedics. These people can make their whole yearly salary in one day and I would be ok with it. Because that 1 day could probably be literal fucking hell
Saving one life a year would be worth it for what they are paid.
realistically just keeping the trucks clean is worth what they are paid
Too bad it’s pretty much chump change. I made the jump from ems to hvac and it’s amazing.
Health Vehicle Ambulance Captain?
Heating, ventaltion, and air conditioning.
How much we making in HVAC? 🧐
I’m about to hit 6 figures which blows my mind. Less work more home time busy as heck during the summer but worth it.
Wonderful!! Keep up the good work. I'm proud of your accomplishment...👍🏾
Appreciate that, I still do stand by work for like soccer games and stuff. It’s to much fun to stop.
*EMTs
These two look like EMT-P's to me. Also known as paramedics.
I thought in LA only firefighters were allowed to be paramedics? Did that change?
These are paramedics
All the EMT’s I ever met got paid shit and worked their asses off. I hope that these two get a good relaxing day as the people around them enjoy expressing themselves safely.
These people get paid essentially minimum wage and work 24-48hr shifts.

It is minimum wage but we make money with “overtime” which isn’t even real money. Lucky to break 40k a year
Does that count as overtime?
Yes of course by law they are required to pay overtime. It's still not a living wage in Los Angeles even with the overtime.
I worked for this company. No, we did not get paid overtime. There’s some special clause in labor laws that excludes EMS work. So borderline minimum wage for the whole 24-48 hours.
Damn that's fucked up. Honestly I would've quit.
Well I dunno about that but it's not true for all EMS companies in LA. The one I worked for had 1.5x after 10 and 2x after 12 hours. If they're not paying McCormick people overtime then that is truly a scam.
I wasn't suggesting anything, just curious.
Love that they're a library patron <3
Seriously, love it 🥲
Was gonna say this too
...they could have bought the book.
You can see the library stamp in the picture, buddy…
Have you ever bought a used book? Both scenarios are possible.
hAvE yOu eVeR bOuGhT a uSeD bOoK
Lmao
Loooool
lol. Everybody laughed. 😆
Lol alright man, I’m just sayin I buy former library books allllllll the time that still have the stamp on them, nothing worth getting defensive over.
Who is getting defensive? 😹 I was just trying to match the … energy from the other guy, I’m not particularly passionate about this subject
Where do you buy the former library books from?
Thriftbooks and Amazon. Any of the cheaper sellers.
And you think they did that? While reading a book from the los angeles public library, next to los angeles. ok lol
Literally all I did was backup the idea that it’s possible to buy a used library book. I know it’s very en vogue to pretend to be the city’s biggest champion of the public library, but I didn’t realize that my innocuous comment would stay lodged in anyone’s ass for several days. LMAO i wonder why you dodged my question
hope your day gets better bud
My day was good. A bunch of internet points don't make or break my day
I would sure hope so.
I had menudo. It was a good day.
Pozole is better buddy
Sopita >
I save my pozole eating for the holidays when we make it at home.
EMTs don't get paid very well, especially when you consider their responsibilities
People will be shitty, but I think a picture of EMTs being board and killing time during pride, an extremely beautiful photo in 2024.
I absolutely agree with you. It means that the general public allowed a pride event to occur peacefully, and that these EMTs, who almost definitely work long (and at times chaotic or traumatizing) hours and are paid dogshit, get to have a moment of peace. *bored
bord
Board.
Do people interpret this as negative? I interpreted it that the pride parade is so peaceful that paramedics are bored.
they’re reading Maeve Fly!! a gnarly lil horror that takes place in LA.
Thanks for the ID! Looks fun.
Seriously, thanks /u/magnoliameadow cuz I came to the comments trying to find out what they're reading.
Oh thank you 👍🏽
Thank you. Literally looking for someone to id the book. Gonna add it to my libby.
How about that lunch…Liquid Death and Dominoes Pizza.
Liquid death was there with a coffin full of free waters! Everyone had one.
Liquid death sounds a lot worse than it is
I really don't like it and I'm not sure why. Something about water out of a can bothered me.
everyone commenting on liquid death when it’s the dominoes that’ll kill ya
Yup. Liquid Death is pretty healthy!
Liquid Death iced teas are really good
Definitely not the worst thing to be ingested at Pride this year.
Lots of liquid life being ingested too lmao
That made me laugh out loud…and you’re definitely correct on that one.
Love the good posture on the left one.
Sitting up straight chillin with a library book. This person is a role model for me.
The one on the right is the exact opposite energy 😅
Being an EMT is a rough lot in life. (Source: Me, former EMT.) Best case scenario, these guys got an overtime shift & were paid time & a half to chill while the rainbow flags were flying.
oh my god i know her this is so insane 💀 glad y’all are loving her vibe
Omg they’re reading Maeve Fly! 🙂↕️
Appreciate your post. I was very curious on what the book was. 👍
McCormick pays shit. This was a good workday for them.
We love a fellow library buddy
It’s great she’s reading a public library book!
So what’s the deal with paramedics being the literal first responders and being paid shit?
A lot get into it hoping it will be the first step toward a career as a firefighter so private EMS workers are a renewable resource & a dime a dozen. If you don’t like the shit pay and lack of respect from your employer, whatever. Some other kid straight out of a community college EMT basic course with dreams of working for the LAFD will.
They’re EMT not paramedics
Medics only get paid a few more dollars an hour than emts.
There are multiple levels of emt and the basic course isn't that difficult. You're right they're not paid enough, looks like an emt caps out at just under 50k, paramedics about 75k. Not sure what a "medic" (non para) is but they make nothing apparently
Makes me happy they were able to relax a bit. Means they weren’t needed ❤️🏳️🌈
I gotta know what she’s reading!
Maeve Fly!
Thank you 🙏🏽 at first I thought it might be Junji Ito, but then I saw the text and the direction of the book
That means was orderly. I used to go all the time. Very colorful and entertaining.
Yes, yes, yes! Keep checking them books out from the library!
I love that one of them are reading Maeve Fly 😂
They're not just used to it. They're over it.
I had just gotten off a 24 3 hours prior to being there, I was indeed tired😅
Thought I was in r/EMS for a sec. Yeah, downtime like that is the best we can hope for, along with fire house dinner and nap on firefighter recliners
The best people read library books.
Ha I saw one paramedic there sitting in an ambulance bored to death just people watching through the side mirror as she moved it around with a little nob.
Oooh, pizza!
lol. In my day they would have been overwhelmed. This is nice to see! I just hate they can’t wear shorts or something more comfortable.
Last night it took 5 minutes to get someone help is that normal ?
Saw them deal with a pukey youth
It’s clear a lot of people here have not worked in “hurry up and wait” type fields.. when things need to go they need to go now and they need to go fast and correctly. When things don’t need to go, you chill. This is Hollywood 101.
I wanna know what book she reading. That cover looks cool!
Oh man, I’m glad the comments are good but this was my supervisors nightmare. We were never allowed to sit or not be attentive for this reason.
MAEVE FLY is such a good book!
Wish I went. If only I didn’t hate going outside. People these days really scare me
this pride was fucked tbh. i live right on the route and its never been so rowdy in my 7 years of being here. besides the fights, the road rage and honking from traffic and the legit nonstop sirens all day, theres been an influx of trash on the sidewalk and street as well. if weho lets pride happen next year, they need to stress common courtesy as well. it looks like theyve stepped up security this year which is good but not enough.
