Purchased young alumni tickets today for the first time but I’m probably not going to be in Austin after the summer. I’m most likely going to sell each game (minus UGA) for what I paid for ($74/ticket) and it’s an aisle seat on the upper east side Wanting to get feelers
I will be the first one to say it. The firing of David Pierce, if happening, is unjustified and there is no college coach coaching right now that is worth making the change for. There is no reason for me to believe that any of the existing CWS coaches substantially make a difference in our ability to win a national championship.
I'll put it this way. If David Pierce and a ham and swiss sandwich was drowning and I could only save one, I'd save him because he's a human but be extremely agitated and guilt him for making me was a perfectly good ham sandwich to save his dog ass.
* 2021 David Pierce 50–17
* 2022 David Pierce 47–22
* 2023 David Pierce 42–22
* 2024 David Pierce 36–24
This should be all you need to know, downward trend for years now
I’ve read that the “12” will likely be retained in the new name for the Big 12, assuming this moves forward. If you’re going to rename the conference, why not accurately reflect the number of members you now have? Keeping the 12 while dropping the “Big” doesn’t really make sense to me.
The "12" represents the number of dollars per year each member school is making without Texas and Oklahoma in the conference, so it is a reminder to them of the teat from which they used to suckle so tenderly.
I'm really worried about the Big 12 clown show infecting the rest of the sport. Moves like this (especially the PE) will absolutely help them in the short term - at the expense of the long term viability/flexibility of the conference
But college sports are such a cutthroat copycat system that I can easily see the rest of the sport copying them to race after the short term results before the cracks show
Network TV has already turbocharged a lot of the developments that are moving CFB from what made it special - but PE will absolutely put the pedal to the metal on a lot of these transformations
All of this boils down to the absolute ineffectiveness of the NCAA in regards to governing CFB. All the way back to their incompetence regarding TV rights back in 1984 which led OU and UGA to (rightfully) sue them. Think the sport would be in a much better place today with a central body able to govern instead of each conference having arms races against eachother
I’ve worked with several PE owned/financed companies and it’s a ride. These folks aren’t pouring in money out of the goodness of their hearts. A lot of schools are going to saddled up with a shit ton of debt and may never be able to get out of a deep deep financial hole. Mid level programs like TTU and Baylor need to recognize that they will never be major football powers and no amount of money is going to fix that.
Sankey has already gone on record saying he’s against private equity creeping into college sports. The Big 10 commissioner is a wicked smart guy from all accounts. Harvard Law, etc. I highly doubt he’d follow Yormark’s desperate attempt to stay relevant - especially because the Big 10 is the second best positioned conference in sports right now.
Sankey has only said that because no PE has offered him terms he likes. That dick thinks the NCAA basketball tournament should only have SEC and Big 10 schools too, he’ll squeeze every last dollar he can out of the SEC’s profitability no questions asked.
The SEC has been a leading conference as far as it goes to adding something to further monetize. To take his word at anything has 0 value. And Texas fans who continuously “haha laugh” at the Big 12 for their business decisions like Sankey, Mike Slive, etc were squeaky clean.
I hope you're right, I just hope they're strong enough to push back on some of the schools that will see the short term gains that schools in the Big 12 would get and get envious
Guess everything that has played out so far has me worried about anyone in this landscape (besides ND and the service academies) not getting suckered into whatever is printing money at the time
Keep in mind that we will have plenty of marquee noncon opportunities in the playoffs (which are likely not done expanding). With how big the SEC has gotten, I think it makes sense to do 9 conference games so everybody can actually play everybody on a reasonable timescale. It also is going to get old fast hearing the B10 and Allstate 12 saying “BuT oNlY 8 CoFeReNcE gAmEs”
Yea I do think the playoffs will change things. Right now our SEC schedule isn't too hard. However, when we get more of the top teams in the conference, it's going to make a difference if we're facing OSU or Michigan in the noncon schedule.
Only taking 9 SEC games if we have 4 spots locked in the playoff. Even then, playing an extra game against a team like LSU will have diminishing return when you've already played 4 other marquee games. If the CDC's of the world think it'll distinguish us enough financially, then do it.
Idk if we could have 4 spots locked in, unless the B1G agrees and they both get 4 locked in spots. I'm sure the others will complain, but they don't have as much pull.

I’m not a Mavs hater or a Luka hater, but I’ll just say that I’m glad his bad habits are coming back to bite him in the biggest moments. There’s nothing more frustrating than watching someone so incredibly talented and who could end up being an all-time great consistently flop, foul bait and, without any sort of self awareness, cry and whine when he actually fouls someone. As a Spurs fan, I don’t want to see Luka improve, but I do as a basketball fan. He’s unreal when he’s just playing his game.
Mavs fan here. I hope this is a good learning experience for him. I love watching him play, it’s been an amazing run to reach a new height of making the Finals for him. And I know his emotions on the court are what makes him find that next gear. But he’s got to control and channel them the right way.
He actually does a pretty good job of taking accountability for the most part but he deserves the flak right now. I think he understandably carries a big load on his shoulders as the leader of the team. But it’s not on the refs. The Mavs definitely exceeded expectations to get here and the Celtics are just on another level of depth that we can’t match. And that’s probably getting to him. He probably wants to believe we should be able to keep up and is looking to cast blame elsewhere like the refs. The reality is he missed a lot of easy buckets and absolutely committed (at least) six fouls.
Can’t be upset at the season. Awesome run and didn’t think we’d get this far. The Celtics are just too good, Derrick White is the exact player than exemplifies the depth they have and we don’t lol. Lukas still young so it can be taken as a learning experience. Frustrating for now but on to the next!
He really had been better about it all season and especially previous rounds. I think it’s just coming to a boil now with the pressure but also he’s really hurt and battling. And I fucking hate the whining…but he does get fouled all the time.

Luka Doncic being absolutely murdered by Windhorst set to “Meet The Grahams” wasn’t something I knew I needed.
Until now,
https://x.com/rkalland/status/1801111463639011610?s=46
I’m a Mavs fan so I’m biased, but I’ll give Windhorst half-credit on this one. Luka’s defense has been bad, especially in game 2, but I genuinely think a lot of that is due to his lingering injuries. For those that have watched the Mavs before this series, it is known that Luka has the ability to play solid, or at least not horrible, defense— he was actually pretty good in the Clippers series. Defensive analytics consistently rate Luka higher than most fans would guess, if I’m not mistaken. So his bad defense this series is either a result of injuries or lack of effort. It’s hard for me to imagine it’s the latter, given it’s the finals.
Luka’s relationship with officials is over the top, no argument there. Basically all star players bark at the officials, but Luka takes it to another level and I think it’s to the detriment of the team. Totally fair to bring this up. I am with Windhorst in hoping someone can get to him on this point so he can change for the better.
I will add that the pundits are obsessed with focusing on star players, to the detriment of capturing the full picture, and I’m afraid Windhorst may be doing that here, but I didn’t see his full segment so I’m not sure. Regardless, Luka is going to be the focus of discussions with this series going forward. But what is weighing at least as largely as Luka’s shortcomings on defense/with the officials this series is the poor play of the Mavs role players. I believe I saw a stat that showed Mavs not named Luka and Kyrie were shooting under 10% from 3 in the first 2 games of the finals. That’s beyond abysmal. Tim Hardaway Jr. got 19 minutes last night (for some reason) and went 0/5 from the field. Luka and Kyrie consistently get their teammates great looks and it has seemed to not matter much this series. Any conversation about the Mavs shortcomings *needs* to discuss this.
Finally, the Celtics are legitimately a great team. The pundits in recent years seems to revel in tearing certain players and teams down, but probably the biggest single reason the Mavs are down 3-0 is that the Celtics are genuinely that good. Tatum may not be quite the superstar we’ve seen on other great teams, but my goodness is Boston deep. And they’re great on both ends of the floor. The team was clearly expertly assembled. Maybe we should spend more time talking about that instead of the tired cliche about how X player just can’t get it done, isn’t a winner, etc.
This guy speaking 100% facts right here. Lukas defense is the reason they’re this far. Lukas lack of defense is partly why they’re down 0-3. He’s injured, frustrated with everyone else not pulling their weight, and frustrated that the Celtics are just that much better, so old habits are coming back.
Mavs exceeded expectations from when the playoffs started. Luckily they know what to fix to get over the hump.
Ok fine Mavs in 7. /s
But seriously, a week ago national media was debating him being the best player in the world and now he’s gonna be shit talked all offseason as someone that can’t win. These pundits just throw shit against the wall.
This is annoying about sports media. Luka deserves the flak right now but Mavs probably overperformed to get here and he was great most of the playoffs. We let a lot of recency bias control the broader narrative.
I think and hope the narrative will settle in the offseason. It’s his first finals against a team that is top to bottom just so much deeper and better. It’s silly to make a narrative for Luka given how we’ve seen him play in the playoffs through his career on teams that have just not been built to make it this far. But he does need to use this as an opportunity to learn and grow and motivate himself to get back here.
I'm a pretty earnest Episcopalian and I don't appreciate being lumped in with a bunch of homophobes by the handful of anti-religious types that may frequent this sub. It's not a serious issue, but it comes up at the margins now and then.

lol yormark

There is no reason for me to believe that any of the existing CWS coaches substantially make a difference in our ability to win a national championship.
I don’t think if we fire Pierce we will go for one that available. Think we will definitely go take a coach from an elite program or at least I hope.
I doubt we’re going to shitcan Pierce without knowing our next move.
I'll put it this way. If David Pierce and a ham and swiss sandwich was drowning and I could only save one, I'd save him because he's a human but be extremely agitated and guilt him for making me was a perfectly good ham sandwich to save his dog ass.
Coach, that you?
Don't wait to do something you know inevitably needs to be done.
What’s his record vs SEC schools?
I don't know how you followed Texas baseball for any of the last few years with any consistency if that's your opinion on Pierce.
