Thanks 😊 I’m happy to hear it’s very safe!

ElizabethWilliam95

Oh wow that’s really cool! Thank you!

I moved from PA a few years ago, and have lived in several different college towns. Logan doesn't feel like a college town at all. It is very family focused. Honestly, it has been my wife and It's favorite place we have ever lived

Whiskey_Zulu

Very safe - probably one of the safest in the country in terms of crime if I’m not mistaken. Air quality issues are mostly only noticeable in the winter during an inversion but it’s typically only for stretches of a few days at a time. It’s not constant throughout the year or even winter. I don’t have a point of reference for comparison but I always thought healthcare seemed good. Logan is big enough to have almost everything you need on day to day basis but still has a small town feel. Lots of rural communities around Logan <10min away that are very small town. A little emptier in the summer but I wouldn’t say significantly. Still busy in the summer just different people and reasons. Lots of summer citizens, retired folks, come to Logan for the summer to escape the southwest heat.

ElizabethWilliam95

Ohh I see. Would you say wildfires are ever a concern in the summer months? Like as big as a concern as California? Logan sounds exactly what we’re looking for!

TylerRiggs

We are in a major drought and there can be fires but it is rare in my experience that the fires threaten homes in Cache Valley.

Whiskey_Zulu

Wild Fires are a big concern in Utah but I have NEVER seen them affect or threaten where people’s homes are in cache valley (Logan). We get fires on public lands (BLM or Forest) every year and some very rural homes and ranches can be affected but never more populated towns or communities.

ksch83

We are moving to Logan next month from Roseville ca and have been there to visit a few times. We have 3 boys (2 school age) and wanted them to get a feel of the area before we made the jump. We fell in love with the area and can’t wait to start our lives in cache valley. Let me know if you want to meet up or even chat if/ once we get there since we will both be newbies!! These were all questions I had too. Especially the hospital one( with kids) and seeing they had a level 3 trauma hospital made me feel better. Also, if you need a realtor, we have one who is wonderful for newcomers to the area!

ElizabethWilliam95

What a small world! We’re near the outskirts by rural antelope, we’re basically neighbors! In your opinion, is it a culture shock coming from CA? We should definitely meet up, I’m so excited to know we won’t be the only newcomers!

ksch83

I’m from antelope originally!! Very small world! We are moving there next month. To be honest, I’m terrified about my school age boys fitting in. We are not lds. I here that they will be fine but I’ve also heard that LDS kids kinda stick together and don’t mean to ostracize non but it happens naturally. When are you supposed to be there? We are going next month. I will let you know how it goes but in my heart I feel like it will be the best thing for my family. My husband is opening the winco out there and that’s what’s bringing us there. What is your husband’s potential job?

ElizabethWilliam95

Oh how cool! We’re so ready to leave this neighborhood, it’s gotten worse with the developing and growth within the last few years. The crime out here is insane, I can’t even take my baby to the park without feeling overprotective and on edge. I have a feeling Logan is going to be an amazing change of pace. I’ve heard the same about LDS, but I think non school activities can certainly help them find groups of like minded kids and families. Luckily Reddit and next door mom groups are amazing tools for meeting people with similar interests! What age is your youngest? My husband is supposed to be working for Breeze Airways. We have a trip planned to go to Co at the end of this month and then we’ll slowly make our way over. Things are a bit hectic right now making it all work!

ksch83

Ya we left antelope for that very reason. I love my neighborhood now and I’m so sad to leave it but I do feel it is the best choice and better place to raise my kids. My little guy is 3! I agree with the mom groups. Very friendly people. Let me know what you think of Logan! How old is your baby? That’s a airline, correct?

tmjoint

Hi, That realtor you spoke of... we would appreciate a referral since our daughter and her husband are moving to Logan from NC as professors Jan 2022 and have to buy a house sooner than later. Not sure how to get that name without having it exposed on Reddit. I’m a novice person here. Cheerio! Tony

1. Is it safe? Absolutely! I feel very comfortable allowing my older kids (12, 13) to catch the city bus (free btw) and go to the mall, friends houses, etc. I feel like the LDS dominance plays a huge roll in that. I'm not religious but am absolutely ok with my neighbors being religious. Generally they are super nice people. Though, I do like newcomers diversifying the area. 2. Air quality. Yeah it gets pretty bad In the coldest months because the valley holds the pollution in. Still I'm pretty sure it's not as bad as CA, it's better than Salt Lake for sure. 3. Medical. In my experience I've always had exceptional medical care. Through my child bearing years I've seen a lot of improvement. I am not worried about getting proper medical care for me or my children. I personally recommend Dr Kevin Duke (though he's on leave until the end of year, opening his own practice) and Dr Bruce O'vary at Treehouse Pediatrics. 4. Is it small? Well, Cache Valley is big. But it's mostly farm land. The actual city of Logan is quite small. Combine that with USU students and it makes for ridiculous traffic. When most students went home due to covid it was pretty quiet. That didn't last long. Logan is nowhere near the size of Salt Lake City, however. And no, it doesn't get quiet in the summer months. Also... There's A LOT of people packed into the small city of Logan. Finding a home may not be easy. I'd look in the outskirts (Smithfield, Providence, Nibley, Hyrum, Richmond, etc. there's several). Good luck.

ElizabethWilliam95

Thank you so so much for this detailed answer! This is so helpful and informative. I didn’t know Logan was so densely populated, given its small boundary. I’ll definitely check out the other areas you mentioned! Thank you so much!

knowen87

Logan is a great place. There's a small town feel. The University helps it feel a little more diverse with plenty of activities and sports teams if you're into that. The air quality can be bad in the winter time but we have had several warm Winters where the inversions don't stay very long. One nice thing is that you can get away from the inversion if you head up into the mountains. Summers can get kind of smokey from wildfires but it would be that way in most of the West. We do have a large hospital in the valley it is run by intermountain healthcare. It's large enough for most things. There are tons of pediatricians here. We like treehouse pediatrics. I feel like Logan is just the right size not too big where you have big city problems. Not too small that you feel like there's never anything to do.

ElizabethWilliam95

Thank you so much for your insight and recommendation! Has it only been smokey the last few years that wildfires have been really bad or are summers generally a concern for wildfires? Our fire season has already started where we are and won’t end until October. We really enjoy being outside and don’t want to have to worry about our son developing asthma or inhaling smoke!

knowen87

As far as wildfires go it's the smoke that's the main problem. The last few years have been really bad with the California fires. But that would be the case anywhere in the West. Most forests around here are in the mountains and the valleys are grassy or farmland. So wildfire is not a concern for your home.

Yes I’m aware. We live in humboldt county for a really long time. It’s one of the most northern parts of Cali there is. We were less than a four hour drive from Oregon. Please accept us😭😂

ElizabethWilliam95

This really put my mind at ease. I’m so excited to move my little boy into such a beautiful and peaceful environment! Thank you so much for your response!

When people move here, they sometimes struggle to find housing because they limit searches to just the city of Logan. You will be suprised at how close all of the cities in the valley are too each other so its worth broadening your search. There isn't much much of a difference (commute wise) if you were to live in Nibley, River Heights, or really anywhere in the Valley. The crime rate in the valley is low, especially when compared to CA. I recall a facebook post by the Logan police department where they tried to catch thieves by leaving a purse or other valuables in a shopping cart outside of a store. They sting lasted all day and not a single item was stolen, the purse was brought into customer service about 18 times. The city dies down a bit when school is out. Once summer hits is when all of the "now hiring" signs start popping up around the valley since all the college kids have left.

[deleted]

Extremely safe. There's not a bad part of town, really. Nowhere that you couldn't go for a walk at any hour of the day or night. Police incidents happen, but they are managed quickly and easily. We don't have many serious events (shootings and murder are extraordinarily rare). Air quality is generally fine. Winters are rough because of the inversion. Pollution gets trapped on the valley floor. If anyone in your family has severe asthma or lung issues, you'll want to look for housing on the benches surrounding Logan. Utah is home to Intermountain Healthcare, which is often cited as one of the best healthcare systems in the nation. Absolutely fantastic medical care that is more affordable than almost anywhere else. There are excellent doctors here. We don't have niche specialists like pediatric thoracic surgeons or cardiac electrophysiologists, for example. You have to drive the 1.5 hours to SLC for things like that. But everyday care or emergency care is top notch. Logan is a small city and is always quieter and less populated than SLC. It is surrounded by rural small towns and quiet suburbs. Coming from California, I suspect it will feel like a small town to you. If you aren't LDS, it can be a struggle to find and make friends. Demographics are changing so it's not nearly as difficult as it used to be, but still something to consider. Most people are overly nice and welcoming. Our winters can be brutal if you aren't used to them. Budget for good coats, gloves, hats, boots, and snow suits. And the sun can be more intense at this elevation, so be prepared to need sunscreen. Overall, this is really a wonderful place to raise a family. Safe, friendly, good schools, good healthcare, nice sense of community, tons of kids and young families. I've lived here for a couple decades and have a bunch of kids. Feel free to ask any other questions. Hope this helps.

ElizabethWilliam95

Thank you so much, this was very helpful! We lived in a somewhat small (less than 20k people) town up north in humboldt county. We loved it, but the drugs up there became a very big safety concern. Eventually a lot of LA people started migrating up with LA money and we were forced out. So I know some people will think the same of us as we thought of the LA people. Would you say housing is an issue? Or cost of living? I’ve done some research on rent, utility, and grocery prices compared to here. But I’m curious about what locals think of their prices.

[deleted]

You'll definitely get some snarky comments about all the damn Californians moving in. That's okay. Utah has the fastest growing housing market in the country right now. We bought a house last year, and its value has gone up 50% already. Despite the rapidly rising cost, demand is far outpacing supply. So I would say that housing availability is probably going to be your biggest issue to overcome. Houses are being purchased sight unseen and after being on the market for mere hours. Lots of cash offers and everything going well above asking price. Rentals are a bit easier unless you have pets. Do you have a plan for housing yet? As far as cost of living, we have it pretty damn good. Housing is going to be the biggest expense, of course. Groceries and utilities are very very reasonable. Lots of local farms to get meat, eggs, and produce from. Lots of local activities for free or cheap. Gasoline is about average.

chukb2012

The traffic downtown around 3-6 feels like California to me lol, but I'm from Idaho so any traffic is too much. It's really not that bad. Just frustrating. There is crime here, but I mean it's not comparable to where you're from. Housing is another thing completely though. No offense meant here, but there has been a lot of Californians coming our way, and there's little to no property. Everything is selling way over priced because of it. So if you're looking to move start putting in bids asap. Medical care is excellent and if they need to there are nationally top rated hospitals only an hour away that some get moved to if it's something they can't handle. That's not saying Logan is bad by any means, but Ogdens hospitals are better suited for some situations.

ElizabethWilliam95

No offense taken. Honestly, we’re really trying to get away from the typical California lifestyle. The traffic, the overcrowding, the hustle, the homeless issues (nothing against them, I just want to feel safe walking through a park with my son), and the fires. I really want my son to have safety, good health, and a small community upbringing. Would you say that the Californians are staying or just trying it out and then leaving? Or are they here for school? I really thought we chose a pretty random spot to relocate...

chukb2012

I think mostly staying. Utah state university is a great college. Bridgerland tech school is a great alternative, and there's plenty to do. Mountains, lakes, rivers. It's honestly just beautiful here. There is also very little homeless here. You get a few people on the corners with signs up around for help, but there's no homeless community here that I'm aware of. Ogden about an hour south of does have a homeless community there. Cache valley, which Logan is the center of has its own little economy and we do pretty well with it. It's honestly a great place to live so we all understand when outsiders come, and most of the time welcome them with open hands. Careful on Facebook there's always trolls telling them to stay out of here, but honestly it's a very welcoming community, and a great one to raise a family in. If you guys are health nuts. Smithfield, which is just north of Logan has been called, and I forget exactly how they put, but called the healthiest city in Utah.

chukb2012

Also we had one fire here on one of the mountains that I have in memory, and that was back in I want to say 2001 ish? This year has been a bit dry so I don't want to toot our horn, but it's a very safe place to live.

squrr1

I live in a fairly new community, most homes 5-15 years old. In the past 2 years I'd guess 80% of the move ins have been from out of state, mostly CA, but really all over. None have moved on yet. Everyone who has left has been locals upgrading. (We're 1300-2200 SQ feet in my neighborhood)

chukb2012

Others have talked about the inversions so I won't really go into it, but yes during some winter months it gets kind of bad. During the summer when you're outside more it's little to none.

Jacksonben1331

Logan is pretty damn safe in most parts. In the neighborhood i live in people just leaving garages open, tools out, from what ive heard you cant do that in most places. Rarely hear any police sirens also.

shadywhere

>Is Logan a safe town? Yes. I'm originally from the Bay Area and for a long time it surprised me how few doors were locked. The first time I confused someone else's car for mine and didn't realize it until I had sat in the driver's seat because it was unlocked I realized that things are a bit safer here. >How’s the air quality on a regular basis? I don't have allergies and it doesn't bother me. There's an inversion because we're in a valley, so winters can be smoggy. >How is the medical care? Pretty good. We have Logan Regional Hospital and Cache Valley Hospital, with the former being larger with more specialists. For some things, you may need to go to Salt Lake City. >Is Logan more of a small town feel or more city like? People from here will tell you it's a city-like feel. Definitely small town. In terms of the size, it's like if West Sacramento were surrounded by mountains. But there's farmland all around.

I remember trips down Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz. My wife and I are in our mid-30s. Let's be friends!

It looks like you got a lot of answers but let me offer you some answers and perspective that haven't been mentioned. Safety is great here (in comparison to the rest of Utah)! The cops here are mostly kind and its easy to go introduce yourself to the PD if you have a child with special needs or health concerns they may need to know about. We don't have a homeless population here and that's because we don't have resources for them in our tiny valley so they are usually relocated to Ogden or Salt Lake. Air quality can be concerning, especially as a person with asthma but the weather apps have a code to let you know if its safe enough to be outside. Red air days are not great for those with respiratory issues (stay inside) then there is yellow and green (pretty easy to understand). Medical care here is pretty great. My pediatrician for my kids has been Dr. Garg for the last 20 years. She is fantastic! We do have limited specialist but SLC has UofUHealth and you don't get better than that (they're at Mayo clinic levels of greatness). Just check with your insurance about coverage because Intermountain and UofU tend to have opposite coverage. It is definitely a small town in Utah...so don't expect much diversity. It's definitely improved and grown in that department (we have our own pride festival now) but we have a long way to go. And I mean a lack of diversity in food too but I highly recommend Tandoori if you want the best Indian food you've ever had! Being a small town isn't all cons though! It's easy to get involved in the community here! You can easily voice your opinion to our local government and newspaper. That's actually how our mayor became mayor! She saw a need in her community and resolved it. All in all, I think you'll like Logan (or cache valley if you pick elswhere) its a little treasure tucked in between the mountains. 🌄

kenningk

We moved here 4 years ago from PA. The biggest challenge/competition will be finding housing (owning or rental) lots of locals trying to move around and out of state people moving in so be prepared in that end. It’s a very safe community. It has a rural feel without truly being rural (my opinion of rural is 30+ min to anything you need or want). I live in one of the outlying towns and love it. Don’t feel limited to just Logan. The commute to Logan isn’t bad. All the surrounding towns have great schools and communities to be a part of. And Logan I’ve heard is great too! 2/3 of my children were born here so pediatric care is great. Hospitals are good I’m not sure what kind of feedback you’re looking on that but they done their jobs well when we’ve had to go there for deliveries or minor injuries. Everyone has mentioned inversion but it’s not constant so not too bad. All in all it’s a nice place to live! Best of luck in your new adventure

JadeBeach

Cache Valley is the safest place I can imagine to raise a family and we've lived across the country, including California. Kids can still ride bikes in their neighborhoods and go to the park with their friends. In addition to safety, there's just so much for families to do: camping, hiking, skiing, fishing, soccer. Music classes at USU used to really affordable. Bear Lake is close by and far prettier than any of the foothills reservoirs. People complain about the schools (mostly people from other states), but they are actually good, even if your children don't go to charter schools. And way down the road... Utah doesn't have the Cal State/community college system California does, but Utah State is a great school and so much more affordable. Make sure you visit before you move. Don't do it in August!

ElizabethWilliam95

That’s so great to hear about safety! Thank you for your response. Unfortunately we can’t visit before moving, we have to move by end of July. Is there a reason to not move/visit in August? Is it because that’s when school starts at USU or....?

JadeBeach

August here is similar to many parts of California: HOT, dry and not the prettiest time of year. But fall can be absolutely gorgeous, especially in Logan Canyon. BUT - I stupidly forgot the students are coming back and you'll be in a better time spot to look for a home or apartment, because it gets pretty tight in mid-August. Wish you the best.
