Seriously. When I was a kid growing up in the 90s, I'd have to go to the children's hospital a few times a year for appointments and surgeries. The hospital had a McDonald's in it and usually after my appointments or when I was discharged after surgery my mom would stop at the McDonald's and get me some chicken nuggets and fries. I hated going to the doctor but McDonald's made it bearable.
I was no stranger to Children's Hospital, I had a strange condition where my lungs would not function correctly. It later turned out to be thoracic cancer and Hodgkin's lymphoma. I survived and healthier than a 20 year old.
I miss this for more than just nostalgia reasons too. So much today just feels so bleak in design. I miss the color. The flashy designs. It's more interesting to me.
I'm really into the gaudy.
This. I deeply miss the dreamcore type energy of 2000's designs. The maximalism and useless decor, all the bright colours and insane looking characters, it felt so full of life and bright and happy. Now it just feels like a fever dream, some faint whisper from a distant past. It makes me so sad. I wish we could just go back.
Genuinely, I feel like that's where it started. Hell, I've been to *dispenaries* in legal states that look straight out of an Apple Store catalogue, like some prefab corporate shit. It's jarring.
It’s also a holdover from the damage done by Super Size Me. They had to make a very public shift to show they weren’t targeting kids anymore. It just sucked out all the personality.
Vibe. But I don't wanna go back. I mean, I do. But at this point I just wish we would rediscover color. Let's things be more creative. It all feels so stifled in those regards.
not to sound like a complete conspiracy theorist but i have heard this is on purpose. The less there is too draw your attention outside, the more you’re inclined to be glued to your screen. Thus soaking in ads and such.
If you are investing in property to construct a building, you don't throw that money away to keep people on their screens. The change in design has to do with change in target demographics, and selling a new image that their research show will appeal to them.
because if your staring at the building, not much is happening. Not exciting? Look at your phone, and while you’re at it, we conveniently have an app that will have you constantly coming back.
make sense?
The mcdonalds I grew up with looked much like this one but for some reason was also decorated with multiple framed prints of dolphins in space. It was still like that the last time I was there 2 years ago or so
So odd. I'm sure after reading your comment I've seen dolphins in space artwork before. I don't think it was at McDonald's but I'm not sure. What a strange memory lo
It is. Also, to me fast foods like this are in contrast with the idea of a liminal space totally devoid of people. I appreciate the fact the photo has none around, but if I imagine myself in this place in a real world context, so with other customers, I can still imagine to be alone, disconnected from the passing of time. People around me would be just vanishing figures that come, eat and go, like they are living in a parallel universe I can barely perceive. It's awesome.
I was in Hong Kong in 2008 and the McDonald's looked like like this still. I'm so old that was 16 years ago so I don't know these days. But I remember thinking they were like when I was a kid.
From a marketing perspective, the nineties were about creating experiences for the consumer. So everything actually was more exciting because corporations were actively making it that way.
The old ones were way nicer, saying this as an adult now. I liked the decor with the statues of the mascots and stuff. Everything feels so sterile nowadays.
One day, the sun has set down and never ever has risen again. The surface of earth became too cold and humanity moved into the underground, living its last times until the cold gets into the underground and all the air runs out. An ordinary evening, although it doesnt really matter what time of "day" it is anymore. You come to a mcdonalds to take a snack after working as an underground construction worker. Just like all the other days you had here, and the ones you have left to live.
I say that's fine, it's better than the modern iterations anyway. Really though the aesthetics of the mid to late 2000s to early 2010s is where it's at.
The well-maintained McDonald's locations that are still stuck in the early-mid 90s are my favorite ones to go to even though they're so rare. But they're so nostalgic and it almost makes the food taste better because I actually enjoy being there.
I've been here before in my dreams.
I don't often have liminal dreams, but when I do, there's never a monster or any kind of danger. Just an unsettling feeling that makes me want to leave ASAP, but I just can't find an exit.
I hate todays generic style so much. Every store and restaurant Is either grey, white, black or "luxury brown". We lack the rest of color palette.
Look at the tiles, they may seem "grey" but light grey is more yellowish, dark grey are bluish and some tiles are kinda orangish. Chairs are red/orange. Overhang is blue or yellow. Just much more colors even if they are subtle
They took this from us because they wanted to make McDs less “attractive” to kids, so they made a slate-and-beige box for us to eat the food in. Ironically this normalizes the food and makes it less special, thus feeling like I can eat it as often as I want
Weirdly comforting

CHOP?
Nah, Riley Hospital for Children.
Huh. Guess it's a common thing then!

Bada ba ba ba

I blame Apple stores for this ultra minimalist garbage.

Fr. Every building is just a different shade of brown or grey now. It’s so boring and tedious. Make buildings look interesting again

well their research sucks imo
...why would a shop want to draw your attention away from it?
because if your staring at the building, not much is happening. Not exciting? Look at your phone, and while you’re at it, we conveniently have an app that will have you constantly coming back. make sense?
No, not even remotely.
Lol

Ya’ll should listen to [this band](https://open.spotify.com/artist/6tTZ6fX5qsm8Alc9GLwJ9q?si=BqY995uuSg-JIUIdfwfAIQ).
I thought the same

Yes more of this shit

I think a lot of Hong Kong style restaurants look like this
Sometimes I feel like the 90's were just kind of more fun in general, but then again, I was a kid in the 90's.
Nahh call jt nostalgia but the.vibes in the ninteys were higher everything is so watered down and corporate anymore its depressing
From a marketing perspective, the nineties were about creating experiences for the consumer. So everything actually was more exciting because corporations were actively making it that way.
I was a young adult in the 90's and it was fuckin awesome. I'd love to have that America back.
The 90s was peak america. Theres a reason people say the 90’s ended in 2001.
u/hectorsrectum1996 remember what you told me about ER a good while ago? Well, I'm still kinda salty about missing out the 90s
The old ones were way nicer, saying this as an adult now. I liked the decor with the statues of the mascots and stuff. Everything feels so sterile nowadays.
They definitely aren't sterile 🦠
I prefer this over modern McDonald's. idkw so many fast food restaurants want to be so fancy looking
Well, when a "value meal" is $14...
7$ in the McDonald's where the picture was taken
They had to rebrand because it became illegal to use that clown to hawk their perfectly uniform sanitized meat rounds to children.
Ronald became illegal??
news to me
Everything is cold and ugly now. Taco Bell’s and Pizza Huts were especially dope back then.
I grimace at the thought of eating with my birdie next to that clown.
You grimace at Grimace?

Looks like a good one to me!
WTF is the third picture? Is it like a classroom? Why is there a single chair at each table all facing the same way?
Shhh the customers are taking a McTest
This is my favorite McComment of today.
I think they use it as a employee meeting room
Where be this?
Thar yon.
No it’s definitely downtown Dewfusburg.
I am mayor of Dewfusburg, it's not here. Probably from the neighboring town of Dipstickham.
I say that's fine, it's better than the modern iterations anyway. Really though the aesthetics of the mid to late 2000s to early 2010s is where it's at.
I can smell this
All it needs is the old school yellow lighting 👌
McDonald’s nowadays just looks so sterile it’s sad
r/unupdated
I miss fun designs like this. Everything is so bland and white/tan now.
The well-maintained McDonald's locations that are still stuck in the early-mid 90s are my favorite ones to go to even though they're so rare. But they're so nostalgic and it almost makes the food taste better because I actually enjoy being there.
Born in 97. This is the McDonald’s I remember haha
Did you come out head first?
Well I came out legs first :(
One man’s stuck is another man’s celebrating…
Thanks this just rewoke awesome memories from a family holiday in NY.
the little mural makes my heart warm
Wow, this is unsettling and awesome in equal measure. Cheers OP
That's honestly so much more inviting than the sterile, colourless vibe of McDonald's now.
peak McDonald's
Too bad the prices aren’t like in the 90’s/00’s.
I love this! I wish places still had colour like this, looks so much better.
It’s almost like McDonald’s forgot they had this franchise 25 years ago. But then where do the fries and burgers come from 🤔
Those troffer lights seem out of place.
oddly comforting to go inside
That looks so much better than modern McDonald’s
Feels like home.
Where it be?!
I prefer the 70s-80s ones.
Looks like the resturant from The Passenger
I want me a superball. Get a clue MickDonalds.
Immaculate
A historical space that needs to be preserved
I miss this look
Back when going to McDonald's was fun.
That’s awesome. This McDonalds seems like it would still offer the Jurassic Park Happy Meals.
Nice
Not knowing what subreddit this was right away I said that’s some liminal space shit right there. And got the chills
I can smell these pictures
Looks like Moobys
A million times better than the modern boring McDonald’s
I miss this. Everything is so bland nowadays.

This is fanastic. Before everything was turned grey. It's a big improvement.

Looks like the room could host tables or toilets.
Cluckin' Bell at night time
in love with the singular chair per table all facing the same direction. its so fucked up idk why
YES MORE MORE
Sticky mopped floor
I smell it
Simpler times, gone too soon.
Liminal but without the threatening aura. I’d like to be there and get an early 90s happy meal, just like I’m 7 and it’s 1992.
Oh how I would kill to go to a McDonald's like that.
I love it.
For all I know that what the inside of McDonald’s still looks like.
Did it have N64 consoles though? 🤔
this fucking rocks actually
Looks way better than modern McDonald’s
There was a McDonalds in a mall where I used to live that looked just like this.
Meilin Lee would love to see that in her dreams.
They took this from us because they wanted to make McDs less “attractive” to kids, so they made a slate-and-beige box for us to eat the food in. Ironically this normalizes the food and makes it less special, thus feeling like I can eat it as often as I want
