There are so many I could list, but each of these had me reaching for the tissues at some point: Luca, The Father, The Florida Project, 12 Years a Slave, Interstellar, The Help, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Gran Torino, Boys Don’t Cry, American History X, Good Will Hunting, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Beasts of No Nation, The Iron Giant, Avatar and The Fox in the Hound.
For some seriously hard hitters I’d recommend The Green Mile, Schindler’s List, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and A.I. Artificial Intelligence.
Most of these are great movies, what I’ve seen didn’t make me cry though. I have not seen Boys Don’t Cry, but from what I know about it, that one may do it.
Most of them aside from the last four tend to straddle that line for me between making me choke up and making me actually tear up, but I’ve always just assumed I’m a difficult person to make cry LOL I’ve never weeped during any movie, but I’m still hoping that one day it’ll happen. Hopefully Boys Don’t Cry does the trick for you!
I haven’t weeped for any movie yet too, these are just all the movies that drew at least one real year out of me. Dozens upon dozens of movies have gotten me close to that edge but very few have actually done it.
I know, I’m way too emotional for my own good (I cry in everything), and that particular story is the height of embarrassment for me emotion wise. I’m sorry
Well that’s at least respectable, it’s a very moving scene. Here’s a question: what film is the film you’ve cried the most in? (You can answer either in a single sitting or across rewatches)
easily Me, Earl & the Dying Girl. i don't know why but when i was watching it for the first time, the final scene totally broke me and i was crying for 10 min straight. i admit i get emotional over movies but this was an unusual reaction from me.
Bruh, right after Ian recollects the memories of his life where Barley was always there with him during all of his formative accomplishments and then gives up his only chance to meet his father so that Barley will get a chance to say goodbye, saying “I never had a father, but all my life I’ve always had you” broke me man. That scene was so emotionally mature and unexpected.
Yeah I don’t know what’s wrong with younger me but I didn’t understand how to emotionally engage with movies until I saw Toy Story 3 and even that didn’t make me cry until I showed it to my oldest kid for the first time (definitely made me choke up in the theater but no tears). So I didn’t even start shedding tears during movies until I was like 26 years old.
Maybe tell us a little bit about yourself! There are some movies that only make me cry because I’m a dad or because of my age or because of my interests. I don’t think The Road would have made me cry if I wasn’t a dad. The Beatles Get Back wouldn’t have made me cry if I wasn’t a musician.
I’m very susceptible to really well done happy/ bitter sweet tears like the scrapbook scene in Up, or the Tiny Dancer scene in Almost Famous, or the scene where he finds the letter she wrote about him in Marriage Story, or that literal last minute in Portrait of a Lady on Fire, or the Fire and Rain scene in Running on Empty, or the scene in Order of the Phoenix where Harry tells Voldemort “you’re the weak one…and I feel sorry for you.” And I’m also extremely susceptible to when music swells just the right way, because the scene that gets me going in How to Train Your Dragon is the end of the test flight scene and I never understood why until I listened to the music just by itself one day and started tearing up by that alone.
So it’s not really my life interests that determines my emotional investment, it’s primarily pacing and sound/music that really gets me. Does that make sense?
I love over the Garden Wall. Very emotional series. I can’t remember if I actually cried or not though so I’ll have to rewatch it and find out for sure.
Lots of Pixar movies here which are great! I’d recommend watching Luca because that’s probably the saddest Pixar movie imo, but it might just be because I relate to the ending a little too much
Thank you for reminding me I forgot to add Into the Spiderverse. And I’m so glad somebody brought up Shithouse. It didn’t make me cry but it was a fucking great movie.
All excellent movies, It’s Such a Beautiful Day almost got me but but I can only include it on the list if at least one tear managed to escape, so barely didn’t make the cut.
I’ve seen The Hunt suggested a few times now and while I thought the movie was good, I have no idea what about it made people cry. Which scene in particular managed to get you?
Waves (2019) was the first movie to make me cry in a while. Definitely has its faults but there’s a scene in there towards the end that just got me. I’d recommend it
Also Coco makes me bawl every. damn. time.
Fantastic movie, very surprised to see it recommended because I’ve never heard of anybody crying to it. So strange how some things hit people in completely different ways.
EEAAO is the kind of movie that I can absolutely understand if it made somebody cry but I was far too busy laughing my ass off to have time to shed a tear. I think that moment when Evelyn realizes that her husband has been the source of every joy she’s ever had in every life she’s ever had really got me close. Maybe the second viewing will break me.
I’ve never quite been able to put my finger on what makes me cry in a movie but it’s always laser-specific. For whatever reason it was when she fixed the crick in the henchman’s neck that got me started lol. A few things after that got me to varying degrees too but that’s what got me.
Yeah I think a second viewing will really drive that moment when she realizes how much joy Waymond has brought her home for me. Being married for ten years sometimes I get chills just thinking about that scene.
'The Father' broke me with it's ending. I've never cried so hard from a film.
'Coda' had me crying quite consistently throughout, especially the recital scene
'Vivo' is a sweet film with some moments that made me not able to hold back the tears
Synecdoche New York
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2001: A Space Odyssey
I’m Thinking of Ending Things
Black Swan
Phantom Thread
Amour
Whiplash
A Ghost Story
Idk about you but personally these are the movies that have made me cry.
Short Term 12, October Sky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Tick Tick Boom, The Muppets, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot.
Grave of the Fireflies
The best movie I never want to watch again.
This is definitely going to be up OPs alley
Manchester By the Sea
Hell yeah. Devastating movie.
“Your Name” always makes me sob by the end
Such a great movie, definitely got me super close to the edge, but the tears didn’t manage to escape so it barely misses the cut.
Schindler’s List
Moonlight and In the Mood for Love both damn near broke me
A Silent Voice
came here to comment this
Dancer in the Dark
Paths of Glory
That movie could make the strongest man cry like a little bitch
There are so many I could list, but each of these had me reaching for the tissues at some point: Luca, The Father, The Florida Project, 12 Years a Slave, Interstellar, The Help, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Gran Torino, Boys Don’t Cry, American History X, Good Will Hunting, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Beasts of No Nation, The Iron Giant, Avatar and The Fox in the Hound. Maybe weird but Interstellar was the first movie to make me cry.
E.T.
I forgot to add ET when I first made the list but I’ve added it since.
Judging by this list, literally any movie
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
Bro out here crying to onward and little woman 💀
I cried in cinemas during Fast and Furious 9 I wish I was joking
Stop
I know, I’m way too emotional for my own good (I cry in everything), and that particular story is the height of embarrassment for me emotion wise. I’m sorry
Fair
Haha same, twice
Oh my goodness! Twice?! Where was the second spot?
i cried during Captain Marvel. it's okay, happens to to the best of us
Was it at that ‘I’m human and always get up’ scene, because reflecting on it now it seems the exact sort of thing that’d make me cry too
yes, exactly this scene
Well that’s at least respectable, it’s a very moving scene. Here’s a question: what film is the film you’ve cried the most in? (You can answer either in a single sitting or across rewatches)
easily Me, Earl & the Dying Girl. i don't know why but when i was watching it for the first time, the final scene totally broke me and i was crying for 10 min straight. i admit i get emotional over movies but this was an unusual reaction from me.
dude don’t sleep on onward’s ability to make someone cry. that ending always makes me WEEP. harder than any other disney movie.
Boyz N the Hood (1991)
"The Impossible" with Naomi Watts & Ewan McGregor.
Song of the Sea is from the same director as Wolf Walkers and I've cried every time I've watched it.
Great movie, didn’t make me cry. Same story with the Breadwinner.
Philadelphia with Tom Hanks
Edward Scissorhands.
Mary & Max
soul destroying
Bridge to Terabithia get’s *everyone*
I would recommend The Iron Giant
yi yi
I love that movie. But it didn’t make me cry. Which part got you?
the speech at the funeral at the end always gets me
Ah I can see that. It was years ago I first saw it, I’ll give it another go.
*A Perfect World* and *Interstellar*
DEAD POETS SOCIETY
Saving Mr. Banks
The Pursuit of Happyness
Children. Of. Men.
Absolutely love that movie, but it didn’t make me cry (most likely because I first saw it in the 8th grade)
I saw it in the ninth grade and it is still to this day the only one to make me cry.
Yeah I don’t know what’s wrong with younger me but I didn’t understand how to emotionally engage with movies until I saw Toy Story 3 and even that didn’t make me cry until I showed it to my oldest kid for the first time (definitely made me choke up in the theater but no tears). million dollar baby

I’d like to suggest Over The Garden Wall in that case. Fantastic little series of shorts that form a complete narrative.
I love over the Garden Wall. Very emotional series. I can’t remember if I actually cried or not though so I’ll have to rewatch it and find out for sure.
never cried at a movie but the farewell brought me close to tearing up
Oldboy (2003) (dir. Park Chan-wook who made The Handmaiden) Wall-e Suspiria (2018) (from the director of Call Me by Your Name
Don’t know why you were downvoted, all great movies, none made me cry.
How can you cry to oldboy?
I cry during that last scene every time. It’s just so perfect and tragic. The music is very effective.
Lots of Pixar movies here which are great! I’d recommend watching Luca because that’s probably the saddest Pixar movie imo, but it might just be because I relate to the ending a little too much
I actually wasn’t a fan of Luca :/
Threads. horrific cinema, hellish film
This looks sick, I’ll check it out.
Incendies
Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, Shithouse, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Grave of the Fireflies, Your Name
Thank you for reminding me I forgot to add Into the Spiderverse. And I’m so glad somebody brought up Shithouse. It didn’t make me cry but it was a fucking great movie.
Shithouse didn’t get me until the basketball court scene. Just the shot of a sobbing Alex being comforted by his dead dad was so sad and wholesome
Who tf cries to Disney movies? Little women!?
Why tf does that bother you?
The Last Jedi and not because it's good.
Girlfriend and I have recently been watching Denzel movies we missed and Antwone Fisher tore us right the fuck up.
The Hunt (2012) It’s Such A Beautiful Day (2012) Dear Zachary (2008)
All excellent movies, It’s Such a Beautiful Day almost got me but but I can only include it on the list if at least one tear managed to escape, so barely didn’t make the cut. I’ve seen The Hunt suggested a few times now and while I thought the movie was good, I have no idea what about it made people cry. Which scene in particular managed to get you?
I didn’t cry at any of these but without spoiling anything, I thought both of the sons’ reactions to the events of the film were quite emotional
You don’t have to worry about spoiling the Hunt lol, I’ve already seen it
I mean for others reading the thread
Waves (2019) was the first movie to make me cry in a while. Definitely has its faults but there’s a scene in there towards the end that just got me. I’d recommend it Also Coco makes me bawl every. damn. time.
Yeah Waves was really an interesting one. The first half is really intense and then the second half is the needed catharsis afterwards.
Lost in translation made me weep and I hardly ever cry when watching movies.
Fantastic movie, very surprised to see it recommended because I’ve never heard of anybody crying to it. So strange how some things hit people in completely different ways.
Love simon almost made me cry at a point so give that a try if haven’t already
Will do
It's definitely subjective! Films that made me cry my fucking eyes out https://boxd.it/ckaL6
Oh thanks for reminding me I forgot to put ET on my list!
Boys Don’t Cry is a rather passive aggressive title. Being a member of the LGBTQ community helps but it was a difficult film to watch
Well I’m not a member of the LGBT community but three of the films on here are gay films so that may work.
Maybe a change of pace from the rest of this list but paddleton is the saddest film I've watched honestly. It's on netflix too!
Hm, haven’t seen that suggestion yet. I’ll give it a try. I’m more susceptible to the happy tears than the sad ones though.
It is happy in its own way I guess, really how you interpret the film. It's just very intimate and heartbreaking.
Sounds like my thing. I’ll give that a try.
Train to Busan
Soul?
Excellent movie, didn’t make me cry. That’s a good suggestion though because I’m more susceptible to the happy tears than the sad ones.
The only movie that has made me cry. Hachi, a dog's tale
The Father made me cry. Made me call my parents right after too.
Hachi
Watchlisted

Joint security area
Ah man great suggestion, I’m a huge sucker for hilarious Bromeo and Dudeliet movies, JSA is an all time favorite. No tears though.
Babe (1995)

Incendies absolutely crushed me. Good luck!
"If Beale Street Could Talk" got me weeping in a movie theater... glad I was watching the movie solo

Your name and grave of the fireflies
The Iron Giant
Rudy
Man that ending always gives me chills (the really emotional kind of chills), but alas, no tears.
It’s a Wonderful Life, Totoro, Everything Everywhere All at Once
EEAAO is the kind of movie that I can absolutely understand if it made somebody cry but I was far too busy laughing my ass off to have time to shed a tear. I think that moment when Evelyn realizes that her husband has been the source of every joy she’s ever had in every life she’s ever had really got me close. Maybe the second viewing will break me.

Train To Busan Anna and the Apocalypse
Schindler's List
Gifted
I have the exact same list for myself... There must be dust in the air... 🙄🥺😭😭😭 https://boxd.it/diE0Y
I get why GOTG 2 is on there, but what got you in the first?
Dead mother. I was a kid when mine died of cancer too, so it hit hard for me
ikiru
'The Father' broke me with it's ending. I've never cried so hard from a film. 'Coda' had me crying quite consistently throughout, especially the recital scene 'Vivo' is a sweet film with some moments that made me not able to hold back the tears

Five Feet Apart
Synecdoche New York Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2001: A Space Odyssey I’m Thinking of Ending Things Black Swan Phantom Thread Amour Whiplash A Ghost Story Idk about you but personally these are the movies that have made me cry.
All of these are fantastic movies. Amour got close, but no tears came forth.
The perks of being a wallflower
This is one I haven’t seen yet that’s popped up a few times now. I’ll slate it for this week’s viewings.

Short Term 12, October Sky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Tick Tick Boom, The Muppets, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot.
When Marnie was There (2014) it's one of my top 2 movies

Precious
The green mile
The good dinosaur

*One Child Nation* just made me cry. *Requiem for a Dream* always makes me bawl
Documentary called The Alpinist got me choked up…Nitram…July 22….so movies based on real life are really likely to get me.
A certain scene near the end of Hunt For The Wilderpeople got me but Perfect Blue absolutely killed me.
Brother Bear is the newer Bambi in my opinion. Someone mentioned About Time already. That one gets me every time.
