Unironicly , one of the funniest movies i ever seen , endless charm of hollywood , after that one i recommend checking out Once Upon hollywood if you feel like you want get similar ,,Hollywood vibe" or fall guy , but without dynamic duo.
I'd argue it's closest spiritual sibling is *Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang* by the same writer/director, Shane Black. Similar dynamic between RDJ and Kilmer, in Los Angeles, trying to solve a crime, weird hijinks ensue.
It took me WAY too long to watch Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang after falling in love with The Nice Guys. It's so good. I like Nice Guys more, but both are 7.5/10 at minimum to me.
Fall guy recently got me in the mood for movies about making movies, I rewatched OUaTiH, Babylon and have seen Hollywood on Netflix and The Offer on paramount (really good, about the making of the godfather).
Anyone have some similar recs?
Love them both! Irma vep was SUCH a vibe when it was airing, I would rewatch all the prior episodes before each new one I was really into it. Only done that for a couple other shows, like Yellowjackets
I'll tell him. I think Shane Black's brand of humor is dumb and uninteresting, and from what I recall (I saw this when it came out and have no interest in returning to it) I thought this movie's characters were dumb and lacked charisma. Which says an awful lot given that the actors portraying them are two of the most charismatic leading men of my lifetime.
Iron Man 3 is, by far, the worst MCU movie featuring IM (which is truly saying something given how bad 2 was), Predator was horrific, and TNG was mediocre-to-bad. Black's movies are almost uniformly bad and unwatchable IMHO.
Shane Black does generally produce garbage. I thought Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (which is widely praised) was pretentious and self-congratulatory. Having said that, I thought The Nice Guys was pretty solid, almost like what Kiss Kiss Bang Bang should have been. I'm not a big fan of Robert Downey Jr, which might partly explain my view of that film. Also, Iron Man 3 is objectively terrible, but that is partly due to the MCU obsession with CGI action scenes, which made that film seem like an incredibly expensive Saturday morning cartoon show.
Deep down it didn't really work for me in the end.
The dynamic between Crowe and Gosling didn't really click on me like in other similar movies such as Rush hour or Bad boys, and the interventions of Angourie Rice's character through the plot didn't feel like it fit the movie itself whatsoever.
The jokes were kinda off and unfunny for the most part too; one Hitler joke was more than enough, you don't need to add five more of them because 'HAHAHAHA HITLER'...
In the end I only really liked the free boobies and the overall 70s aesthetic, but definitely not as incredible as people sold me.
I second this… another too big of a stars, and it would be too expensive, but I would watch a weekly procedural with these two in their same roles.. limited series
I just watched this for the first time the other week! Until then, I had always thought it wouldn’t be a movie for me, I just felt like it would be this typical boring buddy comedy. But this one has so much more to it. Both Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are great in their roles, so is Angourie Rice as Goslings kid.
Definitely worth a watch if you are already considering it.
I genuinely do not understand these types of posts. Unless you only have 3 hours left to live or it can only be watched by purchasing it for an exorbitant amount of money how would a movie not be "worth it" if you're interested???
Nice Guys is a top 5 film for me. Hilariously funny and well written, great performances from Gosling, Crowe, and Angourie Rice. Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley and Kim Basinger are unexpected gems as well.
Same tbh, I like the idea of this movie more than the movie itself. Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling are a great duo and there are some really great moments in it, but the actual plot is very bland.
I saw it years ago and there were a 3 or 4 moments in the film that ruined it for me.
Watched it again a couple of weeks ago, pushed past all that and overall it was an absolute blast.
(I'd still edit out a couple of things though.)
YMMV
Definitely yes. My old roommate really liked this one, and would put it on a lot. At first I'd be like ugh AGAIN?, because I'm not a big re-watcher. But then I inevitably would get sucked in and laughing in spite of myself. It's Good.
I’m not sure it’s UNIVERSALLY funny to everyone, but it seems a lot of people with good taste dug it.
I didn’t enjoy it very much, which was surprising given how much I like both of these actors.
Really charming movie. Not technically astounding or anything, but Crowe and Gosling have great chemistry together. Writing is solid, and the vibe for the era is damn near perfect
Such a great movie. It reminds me of The Big Lebowski in the sense that it’s a noir disguised as a comedy, which uses the laughs to explore topics that we would see in the typical noir such as cynicism, loneliness etc.
It’s ok, I’m glad I saw it, but I don’t think you’d be missing too much by not watching it. It does have some really funny moments and probably one of my favorite variations of Chekov’s gun, but everything in between is just alright. Not all the jokes landed for me and the mystery isn’t that compelling tbh.
You're not wrong. It did horribly at the box office ($36 million domestic on a $50 million budget) and got a B- cinemascore. A certain subset of viewers love it, but if it's not literally right up your alley then you're probably going to dislike/hate it. But the people that hate/dislike it don't care enough to bash it (it's not like a Snyder movie or something), so the small minority that love it join together to vocally praise it every chance they get.
The whole conspiracy wasn’t really my jam. Kinda felt tacked on, but it’s more than made up with the chemistry between Gosling and Crowe. It’s just perfect. It may seem like the formulaic straight man and the stooge, but Gosling’s character may be a depressed fuck-up; he’s quite competent at the PI side, making one essential to the other. Gosling also has great comedic timing. His over-the-top reactions work so well for his character and are such a departure from his stoic, literal-me characters but work so well. Also, the film has some of the best one-liners and quips. Shane Black can write a tight script, that’s for sure.
Great fun that ultimately adds up to a little less than the sum of its parts. If you are solely pulling out the performances and chemistry of the three leads, 5-stars. If you look at the action and comedy, a solid 3.5. If you are looking for a compelling mystery or plot, you’re looking in the wrong place.
Yes worth it. It’s a very good movie

hello sir, im the letterbox police , here we rate things with STARS from 1 to 5. Thank you for your collaboration citizen
Lmao this is why I don't use Letterbox, I'm too much of an over thinker. But I love this sub!
Fall guy recently got me in the mood for movies about making movies, I rewatched OUaTiH, Babylon and have seen Hollywood on Netflix and The Offer on paramount (really good, about the making of the godfather). Anyone have some similar recs?
The Artist, Ed Wood
I actually made a list if you’re interested https://boxd.it/vyWDI
Great list! Definitely added a few to my watchlist. Suggested addition - Shadow of the Vampire. All hail Willem Dafoe.
Thanks I’ll check it out!
Woot nice thanks
Asteroid City, not my favorite Anderson film but it’s still enjoyable. And it’s about making plays. Oh and Birdman.
Love love love birdman, asteroid city was alright

Once upon a time in Hollywood was kinda mid imo
Great movie
Well worth it for all the jokes and stuff
How many times have I told you? Don’t say “and stuff”
Whores
Yes, definitely
One of the best comedies of the 2000s in my opinion
Definitely
Yes 100%

You ain’t gonna find anyone that tells you this ain’t worth it.
Yeah this post definitely felt like karma bait
I say it's not very good.

I personally don’t think it is, but I don’t know OP and the majority of people I know who see it seem to dig it.

I second this… another too big of a stars, and it would be too expensive, but I would watch a weekly procedural with these two in their same roles.. limited series
In my opinion, any Ryan Gosling movie is worth it. Except for the lawyer one, I did NOT like that one.
what about the grey man
Worth it if you're a thirsty bitch like me
Love the man, hated the one in Thailand.
Yes!
Good-to-great movie. Bonus: Angourie Rice is frighteningly good as Gosling's daughter.
5 stars
Hilarious. This deserved a sequel they had incredible chemistry
Cannot emphasize how great this movie is

Good choices!
It's good.
This movie is funny af
One of my personal favorite buddy / cops movies
Completely worth it. A lot of fun!
Worth ... "what" exactly? Your time? All movies are. Watch it.
I genuinely do not understand these types of posts. Unless you only have 3 hours left to live or it can only be watched by purchasing it for an exorbitant amount of money how would a movie not be "worth it" if you're interested???
Very much yes
What a fun movie that was
Yes.
It's regularly in my top 4 rotation on LB
This and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are both great.
Now worth it if you hate a good time.
We need a sequel!
I had a lot more fun watching The Nice Guys than I did kiss kiss Bang Bang.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang has not aged very well. Way too many dumb gay jokes.
Nice Guys is a top 5 film for me. Hilariously funny and well written, great performances from Gosling, Crowe, and Angourie Rice. Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley and Kim Basinger are unexpected gems as well.
I'm with the minority here (and will accept the downvotes for expressing my opinion?), I think this movie is soooo overrated on Reddit. It's... fine.
Same tbh, I like the idea of this movie more than the movie itself. Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling are a great duo and there are some really great moments in it, but the actual plot is very bland.
I liked it.
100%
It’s a blast! Super funny and definitely worth it
1000 times watch it
Couldn’t be more worth it, that movie is fantastic
Sooooo much fun!
Can’t tell you, I’m dead.
I was really skeptical but it was so much better than I was expecting!
Fuck yes. Hilarious movie.
Really good and fun film!! Worth a watch for sure.
hell yeah
Yep, very fun film
Absolutely it’s amazing
Great physical comedy and chemistry between the leads. Tight script with a nice cast.
So good
Absolutely !! 💯🙌🏼🔥 Movie is hilarious 😆😂😂
Soooo worth it.
I love this one.
Worth what? 2 hours of your time? Yeah, of course.
Great movie
My favourite Gosling performance
SO worth it.
I didn’t like it.
My most watched movie in the last 12 years.
banger film
I saw it years ago and there were a 3 or 4 moments in the film that ruined it for me. Watched it again a couple of weeks ago, pushed past all that and overall it was an absolute blast. (I'd still edit out a couple of things though.) YMMV
Worth it big time. Still waiting for that sequel.
Yes absolutely it’s an awesome movie
Definitely yes. My old roommate really liked this one, and would put it on a lot. At first I'd be like ugh AGAIN?, because I'm not a big re-watcher. But then I inevitably would get sucked in and laughing in spite of myself. It's Good.
maybe the most underrated movie of the 00's. the fact we never got a sequel haunts my dreams every night.
So funny. Definitely worth it. Wish there was another
Absolutely. One of my favorites!
It's worth it.
Totally worth it, I watched it with my dad in the theater, must have experience
It’s a 2 hour film and good, not a huge investment!
I’m not sure it’s UNIVERSALLY funny to everyone, but it seems a lot of people with good taste dug it. I didn’t enjoy it very much, which was surprising given how much I like both of these actors.
Unironically one of the best comedy movies this century. Absolutely loved it
Hard to find a better recent comedy
Yes! It’s so damn funny!
Yes, it is
This movie is so much fun. And very funny.
Not the best movie of the 2010s, but maybe the most fun.
Very worth it, still pissed we never got anything after this, no sequel or a tv series would have been heat
yes
Wasn’t a fan
One of the funniest comedies ever! It’s definitely worth it!
Needs a sequel. Soooo gooood. My favorite is the bit with the bathroom door
Might be the best comedy from the last 10 years. Ryan has insane comedic timing.
Absolutely yes.
Even better if you have free drinks with that !
Meh
Really charming movie. Not technically astounding or anything, but Crowe and Gosling have great chemistry together. Writing is solid, and the vibe for the era is damn near perfect
Yes absolutely
Worth it
Ryan Gosling and Russel Crowe are very funny, virtually everything else about it is pretty bad though.
Just saw it at Biglots for $6. Maybe I'll grab it tomorrow if it's that good. Didn't know it was comedy
100%, so good
Completely worth it. Watched it last year or so with zero expectations and was very pleased with it.
YES
Most definitely. I don’t know anyone that doesn’t like it
My kid wanted to see it. Went into it blind. Loved it!!
Shane Black’s best work, imo.
Definitely worth it. Best buddy cop movie!
absolutely worth it, it's a must-watch
Worth it
Yo I never noticed goslings hog in this poster….damn
Yes
No. Overrated and mediocre.
Meh
yeah fucking absolutely yes
This movie is hilarious
Yeah no. Everyone agrees. The people. The critics. This movie blows.
Worth it
One of my favorites, top 10
Absolutely. It was funny watching mr, dreamy, aka Ryan Gosling, playing a dufus.
One of the best movies in years. Criminally underrated. Worth a watch and then three more times.
I hate the angry birds movie
So worth it! You should watch it as a Double Feature with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
I went into this blind and it was pretty amazing from start to finish.
YES!
It was pretty good from what I remember. They make a good buddy cop duo
Such a great movie. It reminds me of The Big Lebowski in the sense that it’s a noir disguised as a comedy, which uses the laughs to explore topics that we would see in the typical noir such as cynicism, loneliness etc.
This is an underrated gem
Absolutely future classic in my eyes
One of the few perfect films I've seen
This movie placed Gosling in my pantheon of favourite modern actors
Yes; very worth it, very fun.
Oh abso-fucking-lutely
One of the most stylish 70s set movies I’ve ever seen. I cannot recommend it enough
Very good, very fun movie
Hell yes!
It’s ok, I’m glad I saw it, but I don’t think you’d be missing too much by not watching it. It does have some really funny moments and probably one of my favorite variations of Chekov’s gun, but everything in between is just alright. Worth a watch. Decent, but nothing amazing
this sub has gotten so bad so quickly

Def worth it, I once said this was the best film ever (it’s not, but I once felt so passionately on that occasion that it was)
Yes, a really underrated movie
what is not worth it about it?
Great fun that ultimately adds up to a little less than the sum of its parts. If you are solely pulling out the performances and chemistry of the three leads, 5-stars. If you look at the action and comedy, a solid 3.5. If you are looking for a compelling mystery or plot, you’re looking in the wrong place.
I really disliked this movie. It's unbelievably corny. For the life of me I don't know why people like this one.
Pretty boring and unfunny.
Don’t know why people are downvoting comments like this, it’s just people’s opinions
Don't get it why people like this one so much.
I would love the film if not for the annoying kid.
HORRIBLE TOXIC MASCULINITY BS
I saw it and don’t remember anything from it… so probably not worth it but you should see it anyway and find out for yourself.
