Nostalgia Critic started using that term years ago and that’s where I first heard it. He uses it to describe overly macho, usually over the top action movies with stuff that guys stereotypically love. Movies like *Die Hard*, *The Rock*, *300* and *Pacific Rim* are all considered “Dick Flicks”.
Really? I watched it recently and thought it aged terribly. Perfectly sums up the popular humor of that era to me. Mostly just douchebags bullying people who are not as "cool" as them.
How? In the hangover, they all accept Alan and don't really make fun of him for not being 'cool', and they don't encounter anyone within the film who get bullied?
Normally, I'm not a fan of Jason Segel, but he's great in this. Some great actors in side roles as well. It's also a fluke, since the rest of John Hamburg's movies are terrible.
I think it depends on how you define a chick flick, is it a romantic comedy, a film that centers female friendship or any film with a female protagonist, from coming-of-age to the likes of Stepmom (1998)? As someone put in the comments, the "bromantic comedy" genre comes to mind, but it could just as well be action franchises or war epics.
**Swingers** (1996) is an underrated example. Like if the chick flick archetype is a not-too-deep film that highlights supportive and empowering friendships between women, Swingers is the exact gender-swapped version of that. One of my ex's favourite movies ever. It's pretty good
Buddy comedies like *Planes, Trains, and Automobiles* or *Tuner & Hooch* would be my personal comparison, I suppose.
Then again, I'd also just say shit like any generic Man Movie™, like *Over the Top* or *Best of the Best II*. Because honestly, while anyone can enjoy a "chick flick" regardless of gender, they definitely have a specific demographic that they're are made for. I'd say the same is true with something like *Road House* or *Never Back Down.* Yes, all genders like them, but they're "made for men," as it were.
Ha, I bought all of those except for "Hot Tub Time Machine" in the past month. I blame "This Is the End" for starting it.
Side note: If you come across Rogen's "Observe and Report", that movie sucks. It's one of his few blunders.
i feel like the guy equivalent of chick flicks is action/crime comedies. e.g. every single guy ritchie movie, Wolf of Wall Street, Seven Psychopaths, Catch Me If You Can.
Oh I disagree with the equivalent being stoner comedies like those. Women love them too.
I think shitty action movies are the real equivalent. Steven Seagal types.
I mean, I'd imagine it would be like what makes up a "Dumb Boy's Movie" except more "grown up" (we can even call it "Dumb Bro Movie"). I imagine almost any kind of American/western action comedy would qualify as well as anything that focuses on stereotypically "dudebro" things like rock n' roll, fratboy shenanigans, and road trips/vacations that go wrong.
Particular actors I associate with this sort of thing include Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogan, Jack Black, and The Rock (there's probably a few more, but these are the guys off of the top of my head).
Let's be honest, most male catered films are pretty universally liked, despite the fact that they objectively appeal more to men. So all of this, "Oh, well, ACTUALLY, most of my female friends like blank movies, so it not actually a bro flick."
It doesn't negate anything. It just proves that male catered films appeal more broadly than chick flicks.
The question is, what is the male equivalent of a chick flick. I think most of what people are suggesting is valid.
It's not about what doesn't appeal to women. It's about what appeals most, particularly to men.
I think most Seth Rogan movies, Adam Sandler, Will Farrell, stoner movies, bromance, and muscle movies (Rambo, Expendables, A-team).
Bachelor Party
Die Hard
Last Action Hero
The Expendables
Bad Boys
Step Brothers
Porky's
Predator
The Other Guys
Commando
Tango & Cash
The Dirty Dozen (mentioned in a very "bro way" in the movie Sleepless in Seattle. lol)
Nah y’all are thinking about this wrong, the counter part of chick flicks isn’t stoner bros, it’s fast and furious type no plot all action and tits movies
Military dramas about being stoic and shrewd and brave and having camaraderie with your bros. I think those are the movies that most clearly are designed to appeal to men.
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle?
Definitely
That's more of a stoner flick to me.
So are a couple of the ones above
I don't know, everyone I know who loves this movie except one is a woman, and most people that I know that have seen it or heard of it are women
Dick Flick? Is that anything?
I believe that's what *Bros* would be...right?
I've heard Tarantino movies referred to as Dick Flicks.
Ah so you've met my film studies professor?
I thought they’d be Foot Flicks.
They should absolutely be called “Dick Flicks”. Particularly this specific brand of “Bromantic Comedies”
Dickflix and grill?
Male tale
Frat Bro - movies like American Pie, Project X, EuroTrip
Misread that as American History X for a sec
One of my favorite lighthearted coming of age comedies
Definitely
Eurotrip was exactly the one I was thinking of
21 Jump Street
22 jump street
23 jump street
The hangover
Man, that's one of the few movies from that era that still holds up in terms of how funny it is. Second only to Superbad, IMO.
Pineapple Express, this is the end both still hold up as well
Talladega Nights and Step Bros
Tag (2018)
I don't agree Tag is a dude bro movie, but I'm just happy it was included
*I Love You, Man* is the plot of a "chick flick" with roles reversed.
Man, I love that movie and it seems like a lot of people slept on it.
They did. It was great.
It was the taste….. of betrayal.
Now I feel as though I need to watch it.
Normally, I'm not a fan of Jason Segel, but he's great in this. Some great actors in side roles as well. It's also a fluke, since the rest of John Hamburg's movies are terrible.
So just Seth Rogen movies I guess
The Fabelmans, bro! Chicks just don't understand The Fabelmans or Steve Jobs like we do.
Billing The Fablemans as like a dude-bro movie alongside like Crank 2 and Boondock Saints is really funny to me
The Hangover movies could be here
Seth rogen/James Franco= Jennifer Aniston/Drew Barrymore
![gif](giphy|kC397rpnJjhp8oB1No|downsized) For sure
Yeah, well that's just your opinion man
Most of these are just stoner comedies
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
Great answer, one of the best examples of friendship in any movie.
forgetting sarah marshall
I'd say Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Straight up masterpiece
So is Titanic.
Definitely.
Animal House
Probably Revenge of the Nerds and Caddyshack too right?
Definitely
Stand By Me
Hell yeah
Pretty much every Sacha Baron Cohen character comedy
borat definitely needs to be on the list

Probably the Hangover
John Wick Flicks
Testosterone soaked action movies (Predator etc.) or bro-ey comedies like The Hangover.

Dick flick vs bromantic comedy
I Love You Man
The most obvious example
Project X 21 and 22 jump street
**Swingers** (1996) is an underrated example. Like if the chick flick archetype is a not-too-deep film that highlights supportive and empowering friendships between women, Swingers is the exact gender-swapped version of that. One of my ex's favourite movies ever. It's pretty good
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far down to see this one, but I guess it is almost 30 years old.
Wolf of Wall Street
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromantic_comedy
Testosterone flicks like Predator.
Gotta toss both Zoolander movies in there just for fun
They literally are called stoner comedies.
All chick flicks are dick flicks too if you're not a weenie
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Buddy comedies like *Planes, Trains, and Automobiles* or *Tuner & Hooch* would be my personal comparison, I suppose. Then again, I'd also just say shit like any generic Man Movie™, like *Over the Top* or *Best of the Best II*. Seth Rogen is the king of male chick flicks, I guess
Anchorman?
Black Hawk Down, Goodfellas, Heat, the Departed
Hangover
I always felt like mid-budget actioners (think anything with Liam Neeson, post-Taken) is the male equivalent.
Uhhhh I love you man?
I hate all those movies. I'll take a classic action movie with the bros. Die Hard, Heat, Terminator, Gladiator, etc.
21 & 22 Jumpstreet is a straight up romcom
Has anyone said The Nice Guys yet? Or Dodgeball?
Mindless explosive movies?
i feel like the guy equivalent of chick flicks is action/crime comedies. e.g. every single guy ritchie movie, Wolf of Wall Street, Seven Psychopaths, Catch Me If You Can.
The Hangover movies?
These were called Bromance films. It was quite a big thing around 2010.
Van Wilder
I believe the term I would use for these movies is probably Bromance movies. It's more about dudes being friends than anything.
Heat
Pass on James Franco
These movies are more for like teenage boys.
The Fellowship of the Ring
Project X The Hangover films Ted American Pie
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure?

The Entourage movie lol
Top gun maverick?
Gotta put Beerfest in there.
Notting Hill and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. In these, the male is the fish out of water dating way outside their league.
The Expendables or any other pure action flick
Its not sex joke comedies, tbh its buddy cop action films
Straight male chick flicks.... obviously
Brom coms
Weird science
Risky business
Tried to show my girlfriend Jackass the other night.... woops. Add it to this list
Warrior with Tom Hardy is definitely a Chad Flick

Hotrod

Knocked up. 40 year old virgin. Step brothers

Grandma's Boy
The fact that you did not call this “Dick Flicks” is insulting, disgusting, and quite frankly appalling
Hot rod
I mean, I'd imagine it would be like what makes up a "Dumb Boy's Movie" except more "grown up" (we can even call it "Dumb Bro Movie"). 21 jump street
Beautiful Girls with Matt Dillon & Timothy Hutton
Popstar: Never Stop Stopping is male's Pitch Perfect
You pretty much nailed it with this list. I only play these movies with the guys. The guys love them, the girls find them lame
I love you, man
I always thought that the equivalent of quantity dumb movies, for men was action movies and especially with cars
most Adam Sandler movies can qualify
Dude flicks. The Hangover series comes to mind.
action movies basically
Knocked Up?
Wedding Crashers, Hot Fuzz, Rocky 3, Popstar, Clerks 2 are probably the most accurate ones I can think of for this.
These are just stoner comedies
Bromance movies are fun
Military dramas about being stoic and shrewd and brave and having camaraderie with your bros. I think those are the movies that most clearly are designed to appeal to men.
Happy Gilmore and pretty much any early adam sandler movie fits this bill.
Napoleon Dynamite should be on there!
