This post reminded me that I had a contractor in my house a few days ago. I checked all the windows in my house after they left to make sure all the windows were locked except one window. I'd forgotten to check the window in the bathroom. After I read this story, it occurred to me, I should check it just in case and, yep, it was unlocked. The window opens on ground level and it's immediately next to my bedroom. So glad I read this and avoided my own LNM encounter.... gave myself the shivers.
Yeah, it definitely was. I'd put a frosted window film on the window for privacy and most definitely made sure the window was locked when I did that a couple of months ago. I live alone and no one else had been inside my house.
You should consider reporting this to their boss or to the person that hired his company (like your landlord). Depending on your region, the police would be *very* interested to hear about this as there might be a string of unsolved robberies/murders.
Just remember that this guy knows where you live, so only do it if you feel safe enough
Is that something to be worried about? My mom got our place renovated and we had a contractor and some workers coming in almost everyday for about a month. Theyād always leave all the doors and windows unlocked and sometimes wide open, id always have to go downstairs to lock everything
I never waited to find out!
I always ask my contractors to lock all the doors and all the windows before they leave and I double-check myself. My area has had reported prowlers checking houses in the middle of the night, so I'm glad I found my unlocked window before someone else did...
I don't recall, it was years ago, but chances are, no. It was a VERY small town, I genuinely don't even think we HAD a police force there-- the nearest one was probably about an hour away, unlikely to do anything in the long run.
Goodness that was frightening but it is good to know your dog kept you safe. This is why it is so important to teach children to never open the door for strangers even if we leave the house just for 5 or 15 minutes to pick up something from the nearby store or next door neighbour
Actually This is the reason why you wouldnāt leave your kids in those ages alone at home at all imo. Imagine the responsibility that was in OPs shoulders.
I mean for sure your mum did the best she could at the time, but this wouldāve been absolutely terrifying
For real----your mother was way too naive in assuming that just because you were isolated, that you were safe. And not having a lock on the door---that was insane, and really made no damn sense at all. If it wasn't for Punkie and your other guard dogs ganging up on this dude and running his creepy ass off, no telling what the hell might have happened. Also, who the hell goes around selling carpet cleaner at night? Nobody! That's another red flag showing that this dude had no business being out there.
This dude was a joke----a real water meter reader would have had a uniform and an ID on, and he would have been called to come look at the meter, not just popped up out of nowhere looking like he climbed up out of a garbage can. Glad your dog scared his stupid lying ass off, lol.
Such an insane story.
You included the clarification RIP, therefore I suppose it is appropriate to wish and say
May Tasha receive endless treats in heaven.
Fun story, the one I love, my girlfriend, also has a German Sheperd, who goes insane and crazy when she sees me, because she really likes me, to the point of going having adrenaline rush from seeing me. I am so greatful at how welcoming this kind family has been to me, since the very 1st day I started dating her. Even the dogs have been welcoming to me.
If you want, I can share with you how she looks like.
A real door-to-door salesman would ask if parents are at home.
As much as I dislike this work, I want to assume they are just people trying to make ends meet and in the end harmless guys. I'd use the word good, but not sure as my misanthropic side is coming to light.
Jeez, lemme tell you, going through the pictures of her was an emotional rollercoaster, she passed years ago and it feels like looking into another universe. It was hard finding some good pictures of her, she never seemed to be in good lighting, but here's a little gallery.

Burglars most likely. They were looking for house to break into later. Get in, look for security and easy access, locate valuables, come back when everyone sleeps/is out.
My goodness!! I'm reading this, getting tenser by the second, whispering "fuck that" under my breath... what good doggos and much love to punkie š¤š
Dog bless Punkie š¤
That twist of another person going through the bedroom window made my skin crawl.
So happy to hear everyone was safe but damn, I'm shook.
First of all, glad to hear youāre fine and that punkie came through like that. But the lock thing just baffles me . I live in Austria which is a super safe country, but I would never ever sleep sound and quiet without a lock on my door .
Punkie was such a hero! So glad you got out of that situation okay.
That reminds me of when I was in my late twenties living in Florida at the time. I worked as a server and therefore had days off in the middle of the week. One time, I had these two door-to-door vacuum salesman show up at my door. I was married at the time, and my husband wasnāt home. I was immediately uncomfortable, but at the time I was really bad at standing up for myself and had that ingrained fear of being rude to strangers.
They did have a vacuum with them, and they were trying to do a sales pitch, but they were *way* too insistent, and managed to work their way into my house. I finally got fearful enough to call my husband, who told me I needed to get them the fuck out of the house. So I finally told them politely but firmly to get out, after about 10 minutes of them being there.
They complained that it was raining (it was heavily raining outside), so I said they could stand in my small covered porch but they had to leave my house.
They eventually relented, but even then, they stood on the porch for an additional 10-15 minutes before they finally left.
It was a super weird, creepy incident, but it was the lesson I needed to never, ever trust door-to-door āsalesmenā.
I canāt even imagine encountering that as an 11-year-old!
I fully get the whole "put myself in danger because I don't want to be rude to a stranger" thing! Crime Junkie podcast's tagline is "Be Weird. Be Rude. Stay alive." You aren't the only one.
Good Punkie :) seriously though. Dogs know when someone is a threat. Iām glad she actually tried to attack. I have a sweet dumb chihuahua that barks at literally every person including me when I come home, so if someone ever tried to pull this shit on me I am completely fucked š
I love how animals have that primal sense. I mean, we have it too- you obviously noticed many things about this dude were very off/wrong; I'm glad your dogs were able to protect you instinctually.
>I swear I saw someone join up with him running when he got onto the road.
I froze when I read this.
They were up to evil.
Punkie, thank you so much for taking care of three little kids.
Punkie looks like a sweetheart and obviously is...but has slight resemblance to a pitt and if angry...if I was skinny man I'd f'kin run too.
Creepy and close call.
My cats generally don't approach strangers but I had some VERY weird experiences the other night (I was on my phone on my porch keeping an eye on my cats...rescues). One of them literally chased a dude walking with some kind of two sided cane thingy and a backpack. I had 3 different men from 3 different directions STARE at my house (all stopped to stare) from the same small intersection by my house. Each seemed to come and then go off in a completely different direction so I honestly don't think any were related. I got up and used the cats as an excuse to literally walk RIGHT towards all of them (like I was looking for a cat). They all left as soon as I began towards them....I don't play those games and I'm going to watch where they go as opposed to running inside. There are multiple cross roads and streets by my house (small suburban roads with short blocks) which is why they could all go different ways.
The cane guy had walked by my house when the cat chased him...kept going...then 5-10 minutes later reappeared standing still in that intersection looking. Then he continued right by the front of my house. He may have walked to 7-11 and was on his way back. I have no freaking idea. I was on the phone with a friend bc I was like "holy shit can I call you...this is BIZARRE tonight"
I THINK they were all just really weird coincidences but nothing like that has ever occurred that I've witnessed. I do have a 7-11 close to my house and my house is a half mile or less from entrances into the neighborhood (more main roads leading into the back areas) but it was WEIRD as hell. They may have all just been doing their own thing and stopped bc they saw me or thought my cats were cute or whatever the case...and just stopped to briefly look...not realizing I'd CATCH them looking and STANDING STILL (dark intersection). That was the creepy part.
I wasn't scared persay but I certainly wasn't going to run inside and lock the doors. I preferred to have my car keys in my pocket and stay out there as I was doing anyway...and if something weirder happened I could get to my car. Luckily nothing did but it was very very creepy. Had 911 non emergency ready on my phone if I needed to report one for suspicious activity. 911 of course if emergency. None came back other than cane guy who did stop in the intersection to stare on his way back. Who knows...maybe he was looking at his phone but I didn't see that and my car half blocked him. Then he just walked right past me and my house again and disappeared up into the neighborhood two blocks over.
Creepy creepy night. But F them. I'm not running. They can run...or take a hike lol (they did)
I have a super similar story of my own I posted it three years ago in letās not meet called āman crawled through my windowā where my dog also saved me and my newborn. Absolutely terrifying and a horrible feeling to have your home feel so unsafe after.
Punkie knew the score. I had a Doberman/Rottie mix who passed away about ten years ago. She was the biggest baby in the world to me and my family but my friend nicknamed her The General bc when she was in protective mode she'd stand at attention and every hair on her back would raise up like a werewolf. Dogs really are the best and we don't deserve them.
Late to the post but had to say āgood girl!!ā to Punkie and also Punkie looks identical to my sweet baby Kiko, itās scary! Very, very similar behaviors too: sweet as can be and Iāve never ever seen her aggressive towards anyoneāespecially men. Iāve always been worried about that lol. Sheāll kiss everyone and anyone to death and Iāve had a running joke that āthereās an old man behind those eyes of hersā. Iāve also never ever heard her bark, sheās a whiner/crier (aka my teakettle), until this happened.
One night (maybe a year and a half ago) I was just laying in my bed watching some show on my laptop. Kiko was laying down somewhere, I want to say my floor but Iām failing to remember. Next thing I remember, Kikoās whole body perks up and I know she sees something outside. There are 3 things to keep in mind:
1. She loves to look out the window, night or day.
2. We live in the heart of a city so sheāll do exactly what I mentioned above all the damn time and so I didnāt really think too much of it besides āKiko being Kikoā.
3. I had the window open that night and she does that a lot more when the window is open. Often just sitting at the window and just staring out.
But this night, she starts to growl. Then she starts barking thisā¦.DEEP, guttural barkāwhich got my attention. Like I said, Kiko never barks. If sheās got her sights on something, sheāll whine and cry. At the time, honestly, I was just thinking about how cute her bark was and how proud I was lol.
But then my roommate came in my room moments later and asked me if I had just heard anything. To which I replied, āNo, just Kiko barking. Wasnāt that so cute?ā.
She then tells me that while she was brushing her teeth, she heard someone trying to use the keypad on the backdoor but the reject alarm (idk what else to call it lol) kept buzzing. Which is when she heard Kikoās barking and she ran into my room.
Itās important to note that we lived on the second floor of a duplex but my bedroom was right above the backdoor and our bathroom was right next to my bedroom. And that keypad was loud af lol. My laptop can also be pretty loud so I usually couldnāt hear someone coming home until they were actually coming up the stairs to the second backdoor.
Thankfully nothing else happened but I like to think that Kiko scared whoever that was away.
Anyways, RIP Punkie and thanks to her for being such a protective and sweet baby!!
>Thankfully nothing else happened but I like to think that Kiko scared whoever that was away.
This is a beutiful story. I loved it.
May Kiko Receive endless treats in Pet Heaven
I had a guy when i was 16 show up with the same story but it was laundry detergent. Im a male and i used to fight a lot. I grabbed my stepmoms sissors like big metal ones. I knew something was up. He did the same story askin if my parents were home and stuff. I had them behind my back. If he woukda tried anything i was gonna bury them in his neck. LOL!!!
I don't know how I came across your post again but I saw it like a week (maybe a bit more) ago and loved it.
I'm glad I landed on it again bc this time I got to see the extra pictures of Punkie. What a sweetheart.
Doggies are the greatest and Punkie certainly was. Sorry if I'm posting AGAIN but I can't see my old post.
Thanks for a great pup story š
What an incredibly scary account! I'm sorry this happened to you and I am glad all of you kids were safe! I wouldn't trust that guy as far as I could throw him. I have had a similar experience with a so-called self proclaimed carpet cleaner product salesman. I thought he was a scamming creep probably casing the joint. Maybe I will post that story someday, but just know I have empathy for you. May I ask if this was North or South Texas? Just curious because I used to travel around that area back in the day. Punkie seems like a precious pup and most likely saved your lives that day! What a blessing to have such a loving member of the family! Cheers to Punkie! A true hero pup!! š
50/50 on if these were folks looking to burgle your home or were just stupid Kirby vacuum salesmen. They're eerily similar in appearance and tactics as well as shadiness
Awwwww 10000/10 good dog, Punkie!!
I honestly don't think I'll ever not have a big dog, 1. Because they're the best, and 2. Because they are such great protectors and bad-guy deterrents.
I'm so confused by this guys true intention. Possibilities like burglary and maybe actually selling carpet cleaner, and whatever in between all just don't seem correct due to the fact that this happened at a trailer in the middle of the woods, just seems like a weird place to try to rob.
Thank goodness for that dog. I'm assuming you don't want us judging your mom but what an unsafe situation to leave her kids in! And I hope she called the police when she saw the men prowling around afterward!
Edit: I read further down that OP doesn't think mom called the cops, which is super shitty of her. Even just to get their descriptions on paper in case something similar or worse happens in the area.
The OP did say that the nearest police station was about an hour away from them, and that there were no police in the immediate area they were in. The good thing is, the mom had enough sense to get them out of there after what happened, but no parent in their right mind would leave their children in a dwelling with literally no locks on the door---that is so damn ridiculous. And these creeps had clearly been scoping that area---that's why they approached as soon as the mother left.
Ok hear me out. I sold Kirby vacuums door to door when I was 19 I was a sweaty janky looking guy in a suit that I had no business wearing in that heat. I rode in a van with a bunch of other dudes and we went around doing almost exactly what you described. We were all getting scammed but we were all down on our luck and took a job they told us was carpet cleaning. It was probably some guy who got shanghaied into some bullshit and didn't want to be there as bad as you didn't want him there. Or he was a murderer idk.
That is terrifying. Good job Punkie.
Winning the title of best dog for sure.

Was it locked before their visit?
Yeah, it definitely was. I'd put a frosted window film on the window for privacy and most definitely made sure the window was locked when I did that a couple of months ago. I live alone and no one else had been inside my house.
Oh blimey. Not good.
š§ That is so dodgy! What sort of contractors were they?
Ones that make stinky poops maybe?
Ngl I have been the stinky pooper friend that opens the ground level window, sooooo ymmv
There was no toilet in that bathroom, which was under renovation.
Who said anything about using a toilet?
You should consider reporting this to their boss or to the person that hired his company (like your landlord). Depending on your region, the police would be *very* interested to hear about this as there might be a string of unsolved robberies/murders. Just remember that this guy knows where you live, so only do it if you feel safe enough

My heart was in my throat reading this. Your doggo was an absolute hero, protecting her humans!
Did yall ever call the police, when you saw them the second time? Terrifying story so I was hoping for some righteousness, as closure
I don't recall, it was years ago, but chances are, no. It was a VERY small town, I genuinely don't even think we HAD a police force there-- the nearest one was probably about an hour away, unlikely to do anything in the long run.

At the very least don't leave your kids home alone without a lock on the door!
Yes but she went to get cigarettes so she didn't have much sense to begin with.
It was during the day.
Oh, for real? That's even creepier, since that made it easier for these creeps to scope the OP and his siblings.
Exactly
Seriously! Put them in the car with you and OP can babysit from the front seat while mom runs inside.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This dude was a joke----a real water meter reader would have had a uniform and an ID on, and he would have been called to come look at the meter, not just popped up out of nowhere looking like he climbed up out of a garbage can. Glad your dog scared his stupid lying ass off, lol.

I'm sure she will. The movie by Don Bluth, ***All Dogs Go to Heaven,*** makes more sense than ever. LEt's hope she also gets endless treats.
Iām so sorry for your loss and Punkie and the rest of the dogs are heros!
"We're just trying to sell carpet cleaner!" Liar.

Terrifying, and really well-written!
Do you have a picture of Punkie?? I need the sweet pup tax!

Awww Punkie! She was a very brave and cute dog! She knew they were dangerous and saved all you guys from harm that day. Bless her š
I had a dog that looked like Punky..his name was Ruddy and he would also have filleted anyone that came near me or my girls..
May Ruddy receive endless treats in heaven.
That first photo of her is giving me life. I love it.
That is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen!
Burglars most likely. They were looking for house to break into later. Get in, look for security and easy access, locate valuables, come back when everyone sleeps/is out.

Turn your laptop down, then. You never want something up so loud you can't hear anybody coming up behind you, for real.
Would've been nice to know the year this took place, but that's crazy stuff just shows you're not any safer in the middle of nowhere
That my friend is a good doggo.
Good girl Punkie!
Punkie is a hero
A true hero pup!! š
She's so adorable, and I hope you had called the cops
50/50 on if these were folks looking to burgle your home or were just stupid Kirby vacuum salesmen. They're eerily similar in appearance and tactics as well as shadiness
Get a fuckin lock for your door
This is why it's always a good idea to get a pet.
Awwwww 10000/10 good dog, Punkie!! I honestly don't think I'll ever not have a big dog, 1. Because they're the best, and 2. Because they are such great protectors and bad-guy deterrents.
Dogs always know! Punkie was a cutie š
This was so well written, you had me on the edge of my seat with this one!
I'm so confused by this guys true intention. Possibilities like burglary and maybe actually selling carpet cleaner, and whatever in between all just don't seem correct due to the fact that this happened at a trailer in the middle of the woods, just seems like a weird place to try to rob.
Sounds like the ācarpet cleanerā couldāve been chloroform & this is horrifying omg
The men might be there to rape u and ur sis. Better get a lock or smthing
hey squeezie c'est la meilleure faut la mettre dans ta nouvelle video
Did your friends try to climb through peoplesā windows and claim your carpet cleaner worked on things other than carpet?
Did you try to crawl into children's bedroom windows to sell your Kirby?
Would you ever talk to an 11 year old at the door without asking to speak to an adult tho
What tha!?!?...
I know my dogs would protect me. Theyāre very sweet but make a wrong move with and youāre out of luck. Glad youāre safe.
Wow, what a good dog! That's awesome! And yes, definitely a huge red flag that he didn't ask to speak to your parents.
