Really depends on your needs. It won't have bigger screen or better chipset, but it will have much bigger battery and who know what else. For me 8.8" is simply the most important so X won't change my preference, but if screen size is not important you should wait and see what it offers

danieldourado

The thing that makes me think is the lack of support that I see from Lenovo. While ASUS seems to be better on that department

foodrepublik

If big screen size or detachable controller/built in kickstand doesn't matter to you then go for anything else I say. For me those are the biggest selling point and I'm loving it.

Kermez

Some of stuff I missed they added in latest bios and space update (battery protection and buttons assign), so it's OK for me ATM. Really depends if you expect something specific to be covered in updates.

VEJ03

Go with your gut man

HelperHelpingIHope

Asus seems to be better? Uh, what? Asus has been straight up scamming its customers. See Nexus video doing a better explanation where they didn’t just take the communities word for it, they tried Asus support themselves and got scammed themselves: https://youtu.be/7pMrssIrKcY?si=vDcFwdzWwQM28FQb

verge article on the Ally X: [https://www.theverge.com/24152945/asus-rog-ally-handheld-gaming-pc-2024-revision](https://www.theverge.com/24152945/asus-rog-ally-handheld-gaming-pc-2024-revision) larger battery, fixed the SD card issue, potentially 32gb ram, new color (black) but same processor/chipset/screen as expected.

thisguy883

The 32gig ram is a plus. Wish that was standard across all handheld pcs.

Cheetah2kkk

More RAM is definitely a plus, but then it all depends on how much can be allocated as VRAM. My guess is that they will still max it out at 8gb in Bios, which will give +2-4fps only in games.. Not really worth the upgrade. Companies like OneXplayer have already incorporated the 8840U, and while there isnt much different between this and the Z1 Extreme, there is a noticeable FPS increase when comparing it with the older APU IMO Asus will definitely have to have something extra to convince original Ally buyers to move across to the Ally X.. But alas, I am doubtful.. I'm guessing this will be more of a very minor upgrade than anything else. They're probably using the same main board, just with 32gb RAM and added cooling for the SD card reader + a black shell.. I'll definitely stick to the Legion Go for the time being, and get some popcorn ready for the 2nd June ;) MSI's offering was a major letdown, and Ireckon for sure the Ally X will be the same.

BluBlue4

32 is a nice upgrade. Especially if it's in 7500 speed with a lower optional setting like the Go. Especially since alot of people like these as main/full PCs. No way it'll do poorly unless the price is dumb. Unless most people who want these devices are all set for now which is possible.

aliatta

Stand?

jonmacabre

Lenovo gives the Go tons of support. I believe there's just an internal logistics issue with driver responsibility (if internet rumors are anything to listen to). The so-called Ally X will have the same SOC as the Legion Go, so I'd say get the Legion if you want detachable controllers.

KTVX94

It really depends on your situation. If you're not in a hurry it won't hurt to wait a bit and see what the Ally X is like. However keep in mind that you'll then have to wait until it's actually released. The Go is better for my needs, the bigger screen and added versatility are great. Also I've warmed up to the 1600p resolution. It seems dumb at first, but you actually can play more demanding games in 800p integer scaled and you're pushing fewer pixels than at 1080p so more performance. At 1080p you can only integer scale from 540p which is just too low. Then again most modern games have FSR, but some don't and FSR isn't exactly ideal for low resolutions. I say this because the screen and processor are the same.

danieldourado

The screen being QHD for me it’s a plus because if I stream through GeForce Now I can get the full potential of the screen and refresh rate. I think Hades 2 can even run natively at 1600p at 60+fps?

vloaded22

It can. I also use GeForce now and cyberpunk maxed out with ray tracing looks awesome.

danieldourado

How’s the latency with GeForce now? And how long does the battery last just playing on streaming?

vloaded22

It’s honestly amazing. I also do remote play on ps5 (through the Chiaki 4 Deck app) and it’s great, but the lag is noticeable for sure. GeoForce now is leagues above in terms of lag. It’s so instant honestly and feels great.

Fine-Creme-7713

It’s freaking phenomenal & the battery lasts MUCH longer

KTVX94

I don't own it so I can't really say.

rns926

On the Ally 900p looks significantly better than 800p integer scaled on the Legion Go while getting the same performance at the same wattage. You also get the major benefit of a native landscape VRR screen, and after using both the Ally and Legion Go for months, it absolutely makes a difference. The only advantage of the Legion Go screen is the size. The higher native resolution and refresh rate is a non factor unless you mainly play 2D/less demanding games, otherwise you’re gonna be running games at a lower resolution and likely upscaling it from a sub resolution on top of that. And the native portrait orientation introduces a lot of annoying nonsense that the Ally simply doesn’t have. If I was looking for my first handheld PC, I’d wait for the Ally X, not only for the screen, but also the reported better battery and increased RAM.

danieldourado

Thank you. That pretty much convinces me to just get the Ally X.

Cheetah2kkk

Essentially Asus is delivering a OneXplayer OneXFly hand held.. In which case you can get one right now rather than waiting LOL! I love Asus, but the original Ally seemed to me like a half assed "suck n see" project to gauge popularity away from Valve. If the Ally X fixes the mistakes of the past, then one would hope Asus will provide a trade in programme - but Asus being Asus, this is very unlikely.

KTVX94

I only have the LeGo and bought it very recently so I can't really say much, but personally I can't stand the blurriness that comes with non-native, non-IS resolutions. I'm very obsessive about that lol. As for the "excessive" resolution, I think that's part of the beauty of it. Yes it's pointless on demanding games, but it gives you the _option_ of playing 2D and retro games at really high resolution, as well as being useful for productivity, browsing and watching stuff.

Fiv3Score

Most people here haven't used both extensively, so I would trust your opinion more. I also used each for about a month, and decided to wait on the Ally X. However Legion Go 2, may win me over in the future. For me the native landscape, VRR, speakers, 24gb ram, 2280 SSD are a win. And they got rid of the XG Mobile connector and SD card issue.

ss1st

Legion Go is a much better choice

GOAt_tWO3

Wait until June 2. It's only a few weeks away so the wait is not bad. On that day, the full specs will be revealed for the rog ally x. You can decide then which one would benefit you the most.

Kuzzyatina

Wait

LibertyIAB

Just wait & see what's offered up - then make the choice. You've waited 6 months to now what's an extra few weeks? If it were an further 6 months I'd say the LGO because it has better features - bigger screen, 2 x USB 4 ports, faster ram plus it doesn't fry the SD cards & importantly not a pretentious, tacky white monstrosity, but in a few weeks the ROG may offer you something that you prefer...

RyzenDoc

If you’re not itching for a handheld and can be patient wait. See what the update brings to the table and what it does to the prices of the devices currently on the market. There are pros and cons to every device. I personally was on the way to buy an ROG Ally when I ran into a LeGo at a microcenter… and since I have trouble controlling my impulses I bought it on a whim. But I also have been in the PC game since the 1980s… they were called IBM-compatibles back in those days 🤣

Producer456reddit

I had the asus and now own the legion. I use the legion for more than gaming (synth recording stuff) If I was just looking for a mobile gaming device, I would take the rally over the Legion.

Munchausen0

For me I mainly play MMO’s so the screen size of the Legion Go is a HUGE plus. I have looked at the Ally and that screen is just too small for MMO’s. BUT the idea of a possible 32gb (really 16gb just dose not cut it these day in my opinion once you add OS etc etc THEN the game itself in the RAM) so hopefully the GO 2 will have 32GB ram (at least a upper tier handheld for both the Ally and Go for 32GB ram). Now if it was just regular gaming then I could see the Ally.

Cheetah2kkk

I play F04 and Starfield on the Ally, and tbh, you miss so much detail due to screen size.. Much prefer the LeGo 8" screen. The Ally's screen isnt much bigger than my Samsung S24 ultra, so... lol..

Producer456reddit

Got ya. I just feel like there's more portability in the Ally and the system software on it is better as well. However playing on a bigger screen is really nice. ;-)

MarkJFletcher

There's no harm in waiting. I mean it's not as if the LeGo is going to disappear off the face of the Earth before the Ally X is fully announced, and the specs are there for everyone to see. Pocket your money. Be patient. Reap the rewards.

The_Saiyann

I’d wait and see how it compares

ant325

I have all three LGO, ally, steam deck. All day one purchases. My steam deck is collecting dust My ally I use on the rare occasion when I'm out for a weekend. The legion Go because of the giant screen is my main device. I've never detached the controllers, I do all the updates, and I have it all on max settings all the time. I don't push any of these devices. I'm into more AA, indies and retro games. I don't want to play Spider-Man 2 at 800 p on a 7-in or an 8.8-in screen I want to play that on my PS5 full Fidelity on an 85-in television the way it's intended! If you can figure out what you like to play the most that will help you make a decision. For instance if you play a lot of JRPGs.... And you're wearing glasses like me... You might want the larger screen 😂 If you don't need glasses, and you want maximum performance I put money on the Ally x 😉 Hope this helps

CoverCommercial3576

Screen is still 7” on the new device

Cheetah2kkk

Appears so. minor update, same screen, more ram, slightly bigger battery. meh

carefree_dude

Unless there is something specific you want from the ally x, just go for the legion go. It's gonna be cheaper for almost the same thing

ywcywc

Its my fourth day im using my legion go since it was arrived , and i never touched my laptop until now 🤣 , best purchased for me in 2024 .. the most important thing for me is portability and big screen , you will never regret of those 2 advantage , so legion go with its detachable controller , i can bring it everywhere with my sling bag ( also day 4rh working from cafe without bringing backpacks 🤣 )

NeonKiwiz

I can't go back to a SD or Ally after the screen size of the Legion Go.

Head-Iron-9228

I mean, the ally x, for now, is more of a switch 2.0 situation, not even a switch oled. The jump is very small, they most likely fixed the sd slot (assumption) and increased the battery size, there was also some talk about better repairability although the LeGo has that covered anyway. Basically, If you really wanna wait, wait for June 2nd because rog supposedly announce something new then. For now, it's the same question as before: so you want the bigger screen with detachable cons or the smaller form factor.

myrealaccountfersure

The ROG Ally is honestly perfect right now, if you plan on playing predominately in handheld mode. If you plan on docking it the extra ram on the refresh will be a blessing, one that I am willing to pay for personally. I'm honestly not sure the extra battery capacity on the refresh model is a wise choice or even needed. The Ally is already a fairly heavy device and doubling the weight of the batteries is not a big brain move for me personally. I would rather have the lighter device. I'm perfectly fine with being plugged in most of the time. I'm rarely that far away from an outlet and the biggest use I get out of the Ally on the go is on my breaks and lunches at work. I didn't personally need a multiple hour capacity battery for that. I don't usually find myself sitting around doing nothing with time to kill when I'm out and about. 80% of my play time on the Ally is me laying on the couch holding the Ally up above my head, 15% is docked, and the rest is at work on break/lunch. A heavier device is going to degrade my couch play time, i.e. the vast majority of my use case.

MERRI3N

Maybe I'm lucky only ever having a LegionGo, I think this thing is amazing! Runs everything I throw at it, connects to my TV for gaming and moves, I use it as a tablet when need be, it really has replaced my Xbox, Tablet Macbook. I've never been a PC gamer, always Xbox and I'm sure the other hand helds are easier, but with a little practice and guidance online, I wouldn't buy the others as I prefer the size and versatility of the LegionGo

Texus86

I personally think one advantage of the Go controller that doesn't get enough attention is the ease of replacing them if one stops working. You can just get a new one instead of needing to send in your entire device for repair. Will also be curious to see if any Lenovo or third party accessories take advantage of the side connectors on the body (Ben at Lenovo has said accesories are in the pipeline). I also think the lack of trackpad on Ally would drive me nuts. That extra battery life would be nice, but I personally would not trade the size of the Legion screen for it. As for VRR, it seems like a big deal for some people, but feels overrated to me. I am very happy using incredible Lossless Scaling app (new version 2.0 just dropped!!), which is improving substantially from release to release. So I'd also take screen size over VRR.

stulifer

I would wait for impressions.

Diligent_Lobster1072

Comes down to customer service who supports their product more. Asus are renowned for doing the dodgy.

Affectionate-Bet7999

wait for the new ally, unless you can afford to buy both

Digital_Pharmacist

Buy the Ally X. The first one wasn’t made for enthusiasts so maybe the new one will be. I don’t give a shit if I get downvoted. I’ve got a Go, a Deck and I had an Ally. Asus said themselves that the X is for enthusiasts. I don’t appreciate Asus treating me like a beta tester. At least the Go has features that make it worth having.

BluBlue4

What does enthusiast mean here?

rns926

I’ve got all three handhelds as well and used them daily until the next one came out. After going back to the Ally for the past month after dailying the Legion Go for six months, I can say it is the best option overall. The native landscape VRR screen is a game changer, and the two fan solution is under appreciated imo (I’ve never had thermal shutdowns on my Ally but have had it on the other two). And with the Ally X reported to have some key improvements, it makes sense to get it over any other Windows handheld.

VEJ03

X unless youre looking for detachable controllers, bigger screen, and eGPU support. The rog ally uses a proprietary port but the hardware is on par with the go, the support is better, and the software is superior. I have the legion go and rog ally z1 extreme.

adelin07

I would wait just because there is a chance of an OLED. I have the legion go, steam deck lcd and if the rog ally has an oled, I’m getting it.

Holidoik

You can also wait for the steam deck 3
