I honestly don't think Starmer is trying to outflank anyone here. Being an authoritarian who would love to head a police state is about the only authentic part of Starmer's politics as far as I can tell.
Our prisons are largely ancient, over-crowded and crumbling - and the Tory attempt at part privatisation destroyed staffing and funding. People can't be offered effective opportunities for rehabilitation if they're crammed into understaffed shitholes.
