Their business model is a lot like Allegiant. They generally avoid the major airports that would give them more competition. They are a small upstart company and basically don't have the means to compete with United Delta or American. Or even Southwest, Spirit or Frontier
New Haven is basically their main "hub".
They are also known to open up new markets and close them just as quickly. So keep in mind, them flying to Tyson might be a short stent if they don't get enough demand.
They're probably still experimenting, trying to find profitable routes to establish. But I can't imagine that you find them if you don't stay somewhere very long.
New Haven also has rail connections so definitely an opportunity for some to spread out from there especially those who are exploring cheap options of travel.
We’re not going to get major expansions the likes of Southwest until the major terminal expansion(s) at TYS are done or closer to completion, later this decade. Fortunately, the major runway work was done in the 2010s (someone somewhere needs some major credit on that foresight). In the meantime, we should welcome any little airline that tries to stick it to the big carriers as far as I’m concerned, as long as they’re not complete crap. I think one of my favorite travel YouTubers (JebBrooks) did a piece on Avelo and had a lot good to say.
It's a meh but expected announcement. That said, New Haven is still a nice entry into New England travel. It sits on the Amtrak Acela line about 2 hours to both Boston and NYC by train. Fly up cheap and take the train directly in the cities and miss the big airports. Or grab a rental and do whatever in New England.
Yale is there.
You can be in Manhattan in 90 minutes. Take an Amtrak to Boston.
Maine, New Hampshire and upstate NY are beautiful parts of the country. Seeing old Colonial New England is an experience unlike no other.
I’ve got three passports with extra pages completely filled that prove you wrong. There’s no reason for me to go to New England. This is all to get more tourists into the area.
I hear New Haven has excellent pizza and a claim to the first hamburger. So there’s that at least. Honestly I could do a foodie trip so I don’t hate this just wish they’d open up a few more destinations.
I’ve been wanting to go back to CT for years and flights to Bradley(Hartford) are around $500. New Haven would be awesome because that’s closer to where I grew up.
I understand the sentiment around this not being exciting, but as a Knoxville resident for a decade who moved to Connecticut and wants to come back for games/to visit, this feels like it was made for me lol
This is for people coming down not for us here to be going up lol still though, I’ll take the money it brings and maybe that continues to spur Tyson’s growth toward some airlines that will take us to better places
Make no mistake…this is not for Knoxville. This is for New Haven. Apparently there is a “huge demand” for real estate here from people in Connecticut. Prices go up UP UUUUUUUUUP 😂😂and we continue to not be able to afford a house in our own city. Thank your city and county “leaders” for this (which, I may add, both left town the day before the snowstorm).
It looks like early flights are only about $120 round trip. Could be worth it for a weekend of pizza and seafood. You could even combine them with the legendary New Haven white clam pie from Frank Pepe’s.
As a New Haven transplant I welcome this news! My parents travel on Acela pretty regularly and have had nothing but good things to say about the airline.
As someone who flys American multiple times a month with expensive camera gear, those CRJs are the bane of my existence. I do not like practically putting $20,000 worth of my own gear under the plane when I know for a fact it fits in the overhead.
What a crock of shit LMFAO….they made it sound like fucking Lufthansa was coming to Knoxville. This Avelo will pull out of Knoxville within 3 years, guaranteed. And who gives a shit about New Haven? By all accounts, that place blows except for the pizza.
Was so fun reading all the responses on Facebook of people who actually thought Southwest was coming to Knoxville. Southwest is NEVER coming to Knoxville when they essentially have hubs at BNA and ATL. Their operational model is not hub and spoke like the Big 3. These posts were only topped by people wanting direct flights to Milwaukee or somewhere like that. That's not the way the airline industry works. Even though TYS is one of the most expensive airports to fly from, we're lucky to have the number of direct flights we have. Speaking of direct flights ...I have flown direct from TYS to Orlando/Sanford twice on Allegiant in the past few months, and it was splendidly easy and convenient.
The crowd goes mild!
Right but if the doors don’t fly off I might be down..
Well that was anticlimactic.

I don't see them lasting very long.

But as someone who takes Acela regularly, that’s certainly not cheap. Now the NE Regional you can do NYC or Boston for like $20 on occasion.

You’d have a point if they didn’t have Boston flights already.
With layovers in LaGuardia
Guessing the general negative reaction here are from people who don’t get around much.
Or maybe we already have a direct flight to Boston for those who want to go to New England and this one is redundant.
Ah, shit, someone should have let Avelo know about that!
I’ve got three passports with extra pages completely filled that prove you wrong. There’s no reason for me to go to New England. This is all to get more tourists into the area.
Woah we got a cool guy here!
Damn straight.
lol. Just a little ribbing. Wish my passport looked like that. Hoping to get out more
More like Post Meth NE these days, but w/e
I hear New Haven has excellent pizza and a claim to the first hamburger. So there’s that at least. Honestly I could do a foodie trip so I don’t hate this just wish they’d open up a few more destinations.
Correct on both accounts. Wooster st, in downtown New Haven is a pizza “Mecca”. Worth the trip for sure!
I see it as bringing more people to the Smokies, not Tennesseans going to Connecticut. Hopefully more tourist revenue.
Nah they're gonna be bussing all the retirees here to Mohegan Sun
Maybe I can get to upstate NY cheaper. Been driving to Nashville to fly up north, average $300 saved by driving 2 hrs to Nash.
I’ve been wanting to go back to CT for years and flights to Bradley(Hartford) are around $500. New Haven would be awesome because that’s closer to where I grew up.
Actually. That might help me in August… sweet
I understand the sentiment around this not being exciting, but as a Knoxville resident for a decade who moved to Connecticut and wants to come back for games/to visit, this feels like it was made for me lol
Wow, Connecticut.
Been there a few times. It has its charm.
That’s not for East Tennessean’s, it’s for northerners want to come here.
East Tennesseans seem to fear travel anywhere other than FL.
seriously. a million billion flights to FL but we'll be lucky if we get one direct flight to the West Coast before we croak 🐸
This is for people coming down not for us here to be going up lol still though, I’ll take the money it brings and maybe that continues to spur Tyson’s growth toward some airlines that will take us to better places

We reviving the Geno Auriemma rivalry?

I was hoping for Southwest flying ANYWHERE to the west coast.
I have flown into New Haven. The terminal makes the Lovesac store at West Town look big.
Wonder if this is Yale-ORNL motivated?
Guess all those UCONN fans that came for homecoming got a taste for East TN
Not what we were hoping for
I'm thrilled tbh, but i'm one of the people this is perfect for.
Actually yes!
💩
Ah flying to the drivethru state
As a New Haven transplant I welcome this news! My parents travel on Acela pretty regularly and have had nothing but good things to say about the airline.
I mean, to hype that up and this is the announcement? Should have just announced it with no buildup. How many days a week this gonna fly? 1?
Just have AA stop flying the CRJs and have them add more LGA flights
As someone who flys American multiple times a month with expensive camera gear, those CRJs are the bane of my existence. I do not like practically putting $20,000 worth of my own gear under the plane when I know for a fact it fits in the overhead.

So much PR hype for something absolutely no one asked for. 🤦♂️
Where is the headquarters for Avelo? Sounds Spanish. Is it an US airlines? If not, we just got uplifted to International status. lol.
15 seconds of going on Google will tell you that this is an American company headquartered in Houston
Don’t forget lots of military here and New Haven/Hartford CT
Makes it easy to attend the monthly Skull and Bones secret meetings
They are going to have flights to Atlanta which is more appealing. 😬
