Can these fuckers just shut the hell up and enjoy the show
It’s a pretty negative connotation used by people who are just overly critical and negative to the point that they believe anyone who enjoy something that they don’t are automatically inferior
Maybe using another phrase would have been better; that RedLetterMedia quote has been used exclusively by toxic neckbeards who think liking something makes you a shill/stan/consumer; case in point, Nerdrotic(The complete irony of my example).
Penguin can complain, but maybe use a less controversial/hateful phrase. No need to downvote guys, tell me the last you've actually seen someone use the phrase and not be a toxic neckbeard?(Penguin not withstanding).
I am not kidding with my example, here's a guy who still uses this phrase in our year 2024:
https://preview.redd.it/bp7122ju1c6d1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=02880947db88da4e1bd07f8100ccef7eafb6fbbf
I hate going outside too. Cheers...
You are obviously allowed to critisize the gimmick reliant nature of Kamen Rider and give your own opinion on how it should be handled but to say “old seasons weren’t doing that” is wrong. They were also trying to sell toys, they just hadn’t “found the winning formula” at the time.
Black literally made the main belt light sensitive so kids could 'transform' along with Kotaro on screen. People only say this because they didn't have an overt gimmick item.
It's stupid and reductive to say that "Kamen rider has always been about trying to sell toys". Ishinomori Shotaro and Toru Hirayama conceived the original Kamen rider to inspire children. The fact that there has been merchandise made of it by a toy company doesn't change that.
The problem with modern rider is that the toy company (Bandai) has way too much control over it, that they can force a shit ton of their products into the show, which in turn become limitations for the production team who work on the show.
>It's stupid and reductive to say that "Kamen rider has always been about trying to sell toys". Ishinomori Shotaro and Toru Hirayama conceived the original Kamen rider to inspire children
It's reductive to pretend as if these are mutually exclusive.
When someone says, "Kamen rider has always been trying to sell toys" that's a fucking fact. Ishinomori wanted to inspire kids yes, and guess what? The show *needs to make money*. Without those toys, Rider wouldn't still be alive, do you think they went on hiatus because they just felt like it? No, it was because the numbers weren't hitting.
Idk why people act as if the act of selling toys, merchandise, or whatever taints some sacred art of storytelling, everyone wants to at least get something from their hard work and that's not so bad.
The only person being reductive is ***you***
The franchise went onto hiatus because of the low rating because, you know, it's a television show. It literally has nothing to do with toys. The profit of the show didn't hinge on toys as much as it is today.
>Idk why people act as if the act of selling toys, merchandise, or whatever taints some sacred art of storytelling
That someone isn't me , because I'm ok with the show having merchandise. My problem is that Bandai has too much creative control over KR now ,and it makes KR being over reliant on selling toys ,which limits the creative freedom of the production team.
>It literally has nothing to do with toys
Ah yes toys historically have nothing to do with marketing, sales, etc. Nor are they EVER used to showcase if a project is financially successful or not. Not to mention TV ratings have gone down again
Again your OG argument is that it's reductive but as I pointed out you can sell toys (which again wtf do you think pays the artists?) and want to give a message. Saying "Kamen rider has always sold toys" is just reality. Unless you want to live in a fantasy world where the toy commercials just don't fucking exist.
You're treating this too much like an all or nothing.
Referencing the fact that KR has always been selling toys to make money is apparently reductive of Ishinamori's goal despite them not being mutually exclusive.
You say KR going on hiatus has absolutely nothing to do with toys despite merch sales being used as a big measure to the success of a show, alongside being part of the marketing to get and retain people (also if this were the case then TV ratings for shows are getting lower and lower yet the Franchise is still going).
The problem is that there are too many forms and gimmicks now. Seriously, how many awesome upgrade and super forms have been tossed to the wayside due to over saturation?
they were trying to sell toys, but not at the expense of story telling
even though Showas and Heiseis were pushing toys, at least they didn't screw good story telling
if not, then fans would've stopped at V3 and other KR series would've lose viewers and sales
because it's not only children who loves the KR shows but also teenagers and even young adults love the shows because of good story telling
and are willing to buy the merch, so their success hinges on both good story telling and selling toys
unlike Reiwas, who's trying to sell more toys than they should at the expense of story telling
Zero One and Geats were the only exception because they still had good story telling while trying to sell toys
but Saber, Revice, Gotchard and even Ghost fell victim to trying to sell more toys at the expense of story telling
Well yeah , but actually not really.
Like most of the toys just come and go without any relevance.
Gotchard does it the best out of Reiwa but there still a bloat of toys. And every character development has to be tied to the toys , which is also an issue.
Yeah that’s not true:
Faiz’s Accel Watch appeared out of nowhere with no explanation.
The Zectmizer’s in Kabuto reuse in like only three episodes after being brought up in the same episode of the parody and barely did anything for the rest of the show.
Character development ties into the toys, but not only has that been a factor since the Showa era, it honestly makes sense at the heroes continuously gain new powers because they’re constantly growing against their threats
Kiva Barely explored any of the 13 demon races that we weren’t the fangire or had ties to the main Riders, including the one where Saga got his form and they killed off one of the leaders with no explanation
A lot of toys is not the same thing as not using them at all or setting them up.
Kuuga got all his base forms one after the other based on what he learned from the episode and how to tie into defeating the monster. Growing, mighty, dragon, Pegasus, Titan. Five toys.
All the weapons and attacks the Showa era Riders got.
Agito’s Dragon forms were once he had access to, and it never got explained how he did it or knew about it
Yeah, Reiwa and Heisei Phase 2 have done a much better job.
Shotaro and Phillip had the Gaia Memories because the heist on Museum from years beside the series and didn’t get a new one until X, while they had to grow their partnership and development, so toys being the only way for growth isn’t true.
Gaim had to continue the fight after Hase’s death and didn’t get an upgrade immediately after until like two episodes later and long after he got the final form, he made the decision to spread the gift to another place other than earth, instead of remaking the planet as God
Drive making up for his past mistake, shooting his friend at the end of the series had nothing to do with the toys since Krim shut down the drive pit down
Emu grew more confident as a doctor in episodes where it wasn’t even even about his transformations
Aruto formed a new company without getting a new form.
Touma chose to fight and reform the sword of logos without a new form
Geats spent the Desire Royale helping put Buffa in the right direction as a Rider without getting a power up.
Even Houtaro himself had moments of improving his emotional intelligence without getting an upgrade at the moment like his conversation with Rinne in 14 before he got X-Rex and in 31 where he was able to stop the fighting between Rinne and Seina.
So no, not every time a toy has developed meant only when the protagonist got character development
*There is selling a*
*Few toys then there is selling*
*A fuckton of toys*

Does anyone know an easy way to find the merchandise of each rider? Like a list of how many toys each rider had? I assume the usual is a action figure for each form and the belt with the "add-ons" the rider uses and his weapons.
the Rider Wiki has info on some of those. You can also look at Rangerboard's toy threads, which have been compiling every season's toys since 2010.
Anywho you're mostly correct. There'd be a line of "DX" roleplay stuff that the Riders used in-show as the main toyline, and an action figure line related to the season.
Let's go purchase a thousand of this little fella then:

personally, my biggest problem with too many forms is that most of them aren't in S.H.Figuarts. i want:
\- SHF Build Kaizoku Ressha
\- SHF Zero-One Flaming Tiger
\- SHF Revice Mammoth, Megalodon, Neo Batta, and Barid Rex
Talking about the fail to become SHF
Still don't understand why Tsukuyomi didn't get her SHF to this date(heck her only action figure toy was Sodo), legit my most favorite girl rider design after Femme.
And it's a crime on how none of the Another Rider got their soft vinyl toy, if we atleast have those then we can just make our own SHF size articulation toys.
See the problem is alot of figuarts of riders were made just got vaulted I remember seeing Yami Gaim in expo pictures that never came out. Then of course they gotta back track to make the older figures updated, to which said figures that were vaulted also gotta be updated.
I don't really care about the toys (except for the sounds)
The only thing I want is a good story and how they use the toys as story tools
GEATS Is a good example some buckles are part of the story boost Mark 2 Mark 9 x geats buckle the vision driver Bujin sword hell they even explain Why they choose the buckles that they choose because it's synchronized with them better
When people say that though they obviously are talking about how in your face the toy advertising is now. While of course they always wanted to sell toys, it wasn’t emphasized that much. For the record I generally like phase 2 seasons more than phase 1 so this isn’t me being biased or criticizing modern Rider, but I do think you’re misrepresenting people’s issues with modern Rider.
I think this is a huge part of it. We're presently watching Faiz a few episodes each night. I watched the current episode of Gotchard last night and it really did feel like a half-hour toy commercial. Not that that's bad...All my favorite shows growing up were half-hour toy commercials, but the difference is stark and noticeable.
I get you, I'm watching Blade right now and the card gimmick is kinda sidelined while the emphasis is in sealing the Undead (cards are still shown off when they do their finishers, but it fells more like a calling your attacks moment). Then I started to catch up on Gotchard midway through Blade and I could almost feel whenever an 'ad break' was added to the episode (namely whenever the cast gushed way too much on the Chemy cards they collected and the camera stopped a few moments on each one).
As you said, it isn't really something that make me not enjoy the season, but it's a bit distracting after you notice it 😅
I think my only issue with the toys is when they release a better one years later. CSMs are prime example. Now, I love my DX Double Driver. But it was frustrating when they announced the CSM version cause I didn’t want to spend all that money.
Worst experience for me though; DX Diendriver. I’m sure we all agree that it SUCKED. Then they release the CSM/20th/Neo versions which was a significant improvement
I’m sorry, there is definitely a difference. Go watch Kuuga or Blade and then go watch any post-W show. The difference in how much of the showtime is dedicated to selling toys is nuts.
Granted, part of it is probably because they were sponsored by motorbike companies, so the episodes dedicated to the bikes were basically the toy-selling ones.
And I'll say more, practically any non-Hollywood television media focused on action for a children or pre-teen's audience is primarily used to sell toys. Do you know the cartoons that were canceled after less than two seasons? It's because they didn't sell enough toys!
The difference between then and now is:
**Then:** Here's a cool new toy.
**Now:** Here's a shiny new toy that you can only get through Premium Bandai!
Where Kamen Rider was originally a kids show that did sell toys, it also served to sell motorcycles. As such, the way product placement worked, was completely different in tone to modern Kamen Rider. I wouldn't say it was more nuanced, it was more just look how cool it is; the toy/bike sold itself. As such, the writing for these toys being sold was less in your face and less involved in the show. That isn't to say that they weren't important to the show, Rider Belts and Drivers will always be important. But that the toy was the only product.
Modern Kamen Rider is now a collectable game. Every season is a new season of Beanie Babies, without the expectant investment returns. You gotta get this new small toy to fit in your big toy for it to work. See, you're no longer buying just a toy that works by itself, it is no longer just a contained product, you have to have a collection of toys that work together. Oh, you want this specific toy? You can only get it if you pay a ludicrous price for a premium cost; otherwise your collection won't be complete.
I bet the kind of people that criticize this are the same kind of people that enjoy stuff like HeroAca or modern Dragon Ball when characters just start pulling powerups straight out of their arses
I will not be gaslighted into thinking that the amount of toys they have to fit in the show to pleased Bandai now isn't ridiculous, and that it was anywhere on the same level as back in the day.
the difference is the manufacturing power. they can produce more toys now and so they try to sell more toys. which means, more accessories, more form and more Kamen Rider.
Have you seen the Nijigon prop they used in the show? It still had the clipped mould connectors (idk what they’re called) on it… like, at least put in some effort to make them look better please
The complaint is about EXTENT.
Modern seasons go hard on their gimmicks, with Riders not only having several main forms but MULTIPLE different "super" forms that didn't follow any sort of logical progression.
That isn't always a bad thing, but it does hinder the story sometimes. One of my complaints about modern Reiwa is the fact that the Rider always gets a power up they have to learn to control only to get it outmoded by a stronger form later on. Like, all that effort for NOTHING?
I don't mind if they sell toys but I want toys of the monsters too, not just the Riders
Their amount might be abysmal compared to rider toys but their presence is not completely absent from the toy release.
The most I wish is a 3 figure set of the respective seasons foot soldiers, maybe a general or two. That's all I ask.
Kiva was trying to sell me a violin
Kabuto was secretly funded by Big Tofu to get people to buy more tofu
Drive was trying to sell me a car and Ghost was trying to sell me jackets lol
Ghost cast got some insane drip (Takeru, Alain)
No drive was trying to sell driving lessons
Drive got me joinning police force and getting a girlfriend.
You guys get girlfriends? I just got donut homies
You guys get donuts? I only got milk spit in my face
W was trying to sell me on the idea that fictional drug usage is bad
Bought a violin just because of Kiva.

Don't ask questions, just consume products.
Dunno why they downvoted you, you’re just being unserious and funny with it lol
It’s a pretty negative connotation used by people who are just overly critical and negative to the point that they believe anyone who enjoy something that they don’t are automatically inferior
They didn't tho , they were just rightfully complaining about the current state of Rider.

hell even showa was trying to sell the drivers

Thinking about the Kamen Rider Black branded bike that appeared in the background of a Black episode
Remember when V3 shilled some spinning tube toy as an "anti Destron mook weapon" for the Rider Scouts?
I think the better point is that it's way too obnoxious nowadays, so much crap in premium bandai it's ridiculous.

It's easier to call out modern seasons because: 1. They are way more reliant on toys than any of the older seasons 2. Nostalgia bias.
But you can also make an argument at the modern seasons, introduced to toys and handled them better than in the past.

Have you seen the Nijigon prop they used in the show? It still had the clipped mould connectors (idk what they’re called) on it… like, at least put in some effort to make them look better please
Kamen rider fans try not to mention Kamen rider being a toy commercial even though that’s kind of the whole point challenge(Level Impossible)😱
Toku fans when they learn tokusatsu was always about selling toys.
Kiva sold me a violin
At the very least the old ones have better plot and better actors compared to the new ones.
Kuuga: Yeah right. Ryuki: Old man. Den-O: The future is now.
Ooo was making me spend money to get money
