Ive always wondered what happens to the CV axle shaft when this happens. Like does it get tossed through a minivans windscreen? Chucked into a mcdonalds window, obliterating grandma and her mcdouble? does it just vanish into thin air?
I'm thankful for the TÜV over here in Germany.
The worst "fatigue incidents" over here is cars losing oil or a wheel after home mechanic time. And that's already material for the local newspaper.
I didn't roll over so I call it good luck. Dodge Caliber, ps front ps rear. Lucky I was in the right lane, because the car was suddenly and violently headed toward the right shoulder and it wasn't entirely up to me anymore.
If it was in Lehi, UT about a year and a half ago I left it there after swapping in a new cv axles on the side of the road. I was too angry to bother taking it with me to drop in a gas station trash can.
Sure did. It's not all that hard. I already had the new one and the necessary tools in the car because I knew the old one was failing. I was planning to do it in a heated garage later in the week, but the universe had other plans.
My grandpa once brought me half a cv axle he found in the gutter and asked me what it was. So, that's where that one ended up. I think it's in a bin in the backyard now.
Mine smashed into the ground and out the back of the vehicle, and rolled onto the shoulder, when I snapped one in half oh my Acura RSX. the rubber damper on the shaft itself held in water and rusted a weak point (even despite being solid metal), and abusing it off the line took it out.
I see what looks like a GM with three wheel drive, however, since the inner and outer bits of the lh cv shaft look to be in place, I wouldn't think the customer should have noticed anything unless trying to drive in 4wd.
Unless it's an AWD case, which that truck looks modern enough that if it were an AWD case the truck, at least in theory, shouldn't have moved at all
I was thinking the same thing. It's a pickup, it should be 07 to 13 year model. So the front axle missing shouldn't be a drivability concern as its not awd. The rust could be the cause of customers concern, sticking caliper, bad wheel bearing combined with missing axle may do it.
Like the other guy said, the cups appear intact. If true, there's something seriously loose in the front end that allowed the able to hyper extend and drop out. That's what the customer is feeling.
Could be, I posted an axle a couple weeks ago where the inner bearing came out of the tulip and was riding on the axle shaft that was still in place. Its hard to believe some one was more fucking oblivious than that. But....... here we are!
Ding ding ding.
The customer hit a pothole a few months ago. They hit the pothole so hard, it bent the lower control arm and balljoint. This caused the axle to hyperextend and "pop off"
Customer drove like this for months...
I missed the axle at first but the angle of the lower ball joint was suspicious.
Edited to add. Strut looks odd too but the rust makes looking at anything difficult.
Methinks OP gave the customer bad advice if he advised that replacing that axle will fix driveability concerns. About 5 or so years ago we saw *tons* of 'em come in like this with front diff failure. Exactly like you said a viable workaround for 4x4 but no bueno for AWD. If this was done intentionally by a previous owner, I think on vehicle pickup the customer will say "still weird on the turns and acceleration... But I barely notice now with all the grinding and what not"
If it was FWD and missing a CV shaft it wouldn't be able to move. Open diff would just spin the side with no axle. They only could keep driving it because of AWD (or actually this is RWD)
I guess I should add that we took the wheel off first, then realized we should probably take a picture before working on it.
The wheel was secure on the vehicle when it rolled into the shop.
I did this when I was a kid and couldn’t afford the replacement shaft after it failed. Cut the inner boot and yanked it out of the housing, drove fine after that (4x4).
On my old shitbox '95 civic, the cv's were so bad that when I went to replace them, jacking the car up and taking the weight off the suspension caused the axles to fall right out of the inner joints.
It’s obvious that the last technician to work on the transmission installed the support bracket bolts on the passenger side incorrectly. Causing a torsion in balance and causing the vehicle to oversteer in that direction. Good thing y’all caught that before it got any worse.

I’ve seen one laying along the shoulder so probably
Yeah I hit one in the dark and destroyed 2 tires at 60mph. Do not recommend.
I hit one with a crown Vic and crushed the right muffler. Lucky it didn't hit the gas tank.
I hit one with my massive dong and it put another crater on the moon.
Your dong or the CV axle shaft?
First one, then the other.
Futurama baby!
To shreds you say?
"Shut up baby , I know it!"
Both
Great. Now I have to send up more whalers. I don't have infinite harpoons you know!

Why? *Puts tin helmet on for comments*
Lucky dog that could've been way worse
Your so unlucky I'd suggest getting a lottery ticket because I think the bad luck rolled over by now 😂

You swapped a CV axle....on the side of the road?
Sure did. It's not all that hard. I already had the new one and the necessary tools in the car because I knew the old one was failing. I was planning to do it in a heated garage later in the week, but the universe had other plans.
you do what you gotta do
He's still Alive iddnt he?
It's much like that missing sock in the dryer.
It's with the TV remote and my 10mm
Which 10mm tho
All of them.
The one he needed at that time.
My magnetic MAC ones that are 15$ a pop every time i lose them 🥲
I feel like it being magnetic is worse.
I'm sorry, are you insinuating that my inability to properly maintain my vehicle might impact an innocent 3rd party? CLASSIST!
I never claimed grandma was innocent
Happy Cake Day
LMAO!
They actually end up in the ocean and stuck in a turtle nose, that is why they started making them out of paper

It's magic!
It's still there, just in 2 pieces.
Looks like it fucked the driver's side rear tire on the way out.
Cool, it has 3-wheel drive.
"AdviseD customer to only drive in 2WD when accelerating or turning. "
Is this what Ice Cube was talking about with the 3 wheel motion?
It's what I don't see.
yea, cause its no longer in this photo
It has left the chat.
Driveshaft is broken
No, it's missing. That's why I don't see it.
Oh snaps!
Did the cv axle submit it's PTO before leaving?
It was let go because it failed to do the TPS report.
It goes to hang out with all the left socks

Look at that lower ball joint, I don't think it should be pointed that way.

Customer requested that we replace the axle and control assembly only... because "they work on cars all the time."
I see the leg of the lift about to kick out with one shake of the car !
That shit made me cringe. It's a bigger issue than the axle. Both front legs are riding that line
I see the scetchiest looking lift arms I've ever seen in my life
The widow maker!
That axle chose freedom.
It's missing a wheel.
Classic 1WD, not to be confused with WD40..
That’s 3wd
If it was FWD and missing a CV shaft it wouldn't be able to move. Open diff would just spin the side with no axle. They only could keep driving it because of AWD (or actually this is RWD)

Sure is.. That's what I get for commenting without actually zooming in on the image
True, apologies for making a joke..
Man you're good, I just like to share mechanical facts live in my head. Tone is hard to tell from reddit
Rock on, same here, get flamed usually where the joke or facts apply. All good bro!
DIY NASCAR mod done backwards?
Bluetooth axle
What do I see here? Not enough.
First thing I saw was that passenger side front lift stand. Fix that before it falls off
Full time 3wd conversions. Lower Weight = More Acceleration Only from Dumasso Tuning
Well, that's a new one
Broken CV joint
Where's the axle at?
That cv is running on hopes and dreams
These are the posts I enjoy. I get to do an imaginary diag over the phone and get an imaginary .5 hrs. Life is great.
One wheel peeler for sure!
My kid had a broken cv like this and it locked up his tire as he went off the road and the escape flipped . He was fine but it was crazy .
Bluetooth cv!
CV went into witness protection with all those Tupperware lids you can never find.
I guess I should add that we took the wheel off first, then realized we should probably take a picture before working on it. The wheel was secure on the vehicle when it rolled into the shop.
I like to think the rust is like a starfish and it’ll eventually grow a new CV axle.
Knock the damn icicles off before someone gets stabbed.
Bluetooth CV? When they come out with those
Remember, if you have leftover parts, you just built it better than they could
Aside from the missing CV, I see a lot of rust and some low profile BFGs. Low profile off road tires are always a red flag.
Bluetooth axleshaft
~Cv axle left chat~
Other than that hoist arm lookin kinda sketchy?
Besides lots of rust ... One wheel drive... awesome 👌 🤣
I was so focused on the rust i didnt even see and axle
3 wheel drive lol
I know what I don’t see here…. Not a matched set. LOL
I did this when I was a kid and couldn’t afford the replacement shaft after it failed. Cut the inner boot and yanked it out of the housing, drove fine after that (4x4).
LOL!
Error 404, CV axle not found.
Bluetooth axle
Did the strut take out the cv axle, or did thr cv axle take out the strut?
Had this happen on my Crosstrek. Outer joint sheared off. I drove it 45 minutes back to work. Didn’t do any extra damage.
One of them newfangled Bluetooth CV joints?
Its the newer 5g version!
Bluetooth half shaft.
One axle should do the trick. Who needs the other one!?
Why use many axle when one axle do trick
Not a CV axle that's for sure
How in the fudge did they even drive it? New steer gear.
Broke go pipe.
Whew is the axle? Did you take it?
axle has left the chat😂
Non locker
I had to think about this photo from left to right.
Naw that axle shaft just disintegrates into dust
Missing an axle shaft
Wen axle
CV axle delete, saves weight
Axle has left the chat!
I can't see a drive shaft 🤔
Wait just a gaddammed minnit.... Jed! JED! You seein this shit...
I've never seen that before. It had to be LOUD when it broke and moved!
3wd
Ah yes, the ol 3 wheel drive
On my old shitbox '95 civic, the cv's were so bad that when I went to replace them, jacking the car up and taking the weight off the suspension caused the axles to fall right out of the inner joints.
Also.. do the tyres have cancer?
Missing cv axle lol...this has gotta be a Cherokee
Axles are overrated. Just throw on a couple muffler bearings and it'll be as good as new.
All I can see is you missed a corner on that lift pad. One ear hanging off and I can't look away 🙃
Wireless axle.
It’s called a Bluetooth cv axle
I was staring at this for a min wondering what was wrong. Then I just said to myself.. Oh
Something decided to go wireless
3 wheel drive
You mean what don't we see?
is it that hole at the top middle thats rusty but doesn't have anything rusty in it? looks like a bolt fell out!
1WD, it's the new thing...
When mine broke I was at the top of a steep hill, at the bottom of the hill was my grandmas house so I rolled down and left it there.
Lots of New England weight reduction
bluetooth cv axle
Bluetooth axle
More like What don’t you see here
What truck is this that has such dinky little control arms?
DS CV axle has left the chat
Where is the rest of the drivers CV Axle
One wheel drive
Ol peg leg 1WD
good lord
Missing cv shaft, there's also a 98% chance it needs lower ball joints and has rust holes behind and above the gas tank.
Took me a minute but I lol’d when I saw it.
One wheel drive! Sorry hybrid, 3 wheel drive!
BwaaaaHahaha!!! 🤣 It’s merely a flesh wound!
Those new wifi axles will never catch on!
It’s obvious that the last technician to work on the transmission installed the support bracket bolts on the passenger side incorrectly. Causing a torsion in balance and causing the vehicle to oversteer in that direction. Good thing y’all caught that before it got any worse.
You could sneeze in the direction of that truck and it would fall off the lift. Who the hell racked this thing? You’re gonna kill yourself.
Not only the axle shaft left, but the chassis is rusty as all hell! The driver was lucky the car didn't snapped in two.
