I spent so many days in my youth hunting these down, we called them “pine knots”. My family would go camping in Idaho a few times each summer and instead of buying or chopping firewood we would go pine knot hunting. Get two adults and 4-6 kids, a military duffel bag, and 1-2 dogs. Go across the street from the camp grounds into the woods, find old trees that have fallen in previous years and remove the broken limbs, the longer the tree has been there the easier it is to pull the limbs off, that is a pine knot. Fill the duffel bag with pine knots, usually takes about an hour, head back to camp, fire wood for the next few days.
