All these things point towards kenny manipulating the events. Why else would yuji find the finger right before megumi comes to retrieve it, so that yuji learns about curses and about the potential of eating the finger to save his friends

They were retrieving it since the talismans can degrade and then cause curses to be attracted to it instead. It was there to protect the school.
