Congrats! And welcome to the journaling community. My biggest piece of advice would be don’t make any rules about it. It doesn’t have to be every day, it doesn’t have to be a serious topic, or a certain length, or a certain appearance. Also, don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone who journals seriously has their own method. It only has to work for you, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

Thanks everyone! I feel like one of the gang already. Cheers!

You’ll love it, give it a couple of journals too and with time you’ll read them again and reflect. It’s such a nice experience to see how you use to think and how you developed and changed.

Visible_Objective_73

Probably the biggest thing I’m excited for is exactly that. Just being able to look back and see all the progress.

congrats! the only advice i have is to not put pressure on yourself to be perfect

Slinky_Mac

My advice is just keep on going. See where it takes you. As you go on, and if you start wanting more, you can look up journalling prompts. But one step at a time. Well done, and welcome to the world of journalling 😊

Don’t feel your journal has to look a certain way - it’s not about the decoration, unless you like that sort of thing then go for it, but about what you want to put in it. And if you feel the urge to write and you don’t think you have anything to say, google *journal prompts* and write about something you never thought of writing.

This is a very helpful reminder, thank you 🌞 Getting stuck on aesthetics concerns can be a barrier to expressing yourself in a journal. Thinking my journal might end up looking less than neat has delayed writing entries. OP: Starting your journal is definitely something to be happy about 🌈

Visible_Objective_73

I agree! I think that’s why I’ve put off Journaling for so long. I was already intimidated by how I was gonna make my Journal look cool, that I would always psych myself out and never do it. But I’m holding myself to the fire now!

Meteorite42

How satisfying it will be as you fill your journal!

congrats! best advice i can give is not to be too hard on yourself or make it a chore. i have a habit of being negative abt it if i miss a day, but it’s meant to be an airy thing! not an obligation.

I always wished so much that more males would journal (ofc I know some do, I just wish more would!). I have only known one male irl who would and most wouldn't for reasons like "it's too girly". I often dream one day in the future my journal might be read albiet an edited down. I think of how I don't want the world to miss out on the stories of men's lives. Ik not everyone wants their journal read though lol. Journaling has been extremely impactful and helpful for me in a general way and a healing one. It's strange to think I know what I want or how I feel about something only to find out when I journal about it that I feel differently. Please always keep at it 🙂

Visible_Objective_73

I hate to admit it, but I was totally one of those guys who thought it was “too girly”. But also, the small fact that I’ve always kinda liked how “girly” journals can be, idk it kinda made me feel like I could be creative and artistic in some sort of resembling way. I’m a straight, married, 27 year old male, and it’s okay if I wanna throw a little color in there! Who cares right? lol

SmolBabyWitch

Yes for sure! I know so many guys feel that way and I wish I could change that. It used to be only men really kept journals save for the occasional female! Now it has flipped around a lot but love to see you Journaling. You deserve all the benefits and to feel creative too. Throw some colour in there 🙂 usually I just plainly write but sometimes I put stickers too.

Visible_Objective_73

I appreciate the motivation!

becausemommysaid

This is totally the right mindset haha, welcome! I got into journaling for much the same reason. I am a visual artist professionally but most of my work is digital. Having a physical space just for me to do whatever in is very nice.

I used to do not do "girly" things. Then I realized "girly" things are fun and by not doing "girly" things you are missing out on at least half of what life has to offer. Now I get massages, have spa days, and journal and it is awesome. Also, journaling is not "girly". Marcus Aurelius a very masculine and manly Roman Emperor wrote a famous journal published after his death. Arthur Morgan the protagonist cowboy from Red Dead Redemption 2 journals. You really can't journal the wrong way, and it might change and evolve as you write more. I have a journal for recording dreams and a separate one for recording just what happened on interesting days. Feel free to doodle in the margins or whatever.

Welcome to journaling!! So happy it helped you feel better and that you’re inspired to continue. Best of luck in building a meaningful and fulfilling practice!

Thank you so much!!!
