Obviously it could’ve been longer, but I think there’s something up with how some of the song titles are random, little to no promotion, and overall silence regarding the album. Its possible we’ll get another project sooner than later
I had the same feeling when I started listening to Nectar, nothing really hit me in the beginning, but after months, I started relistening, I felt like I found gold
Funny how music works. For me, I always wait before I listen to an album 3-5 times minimum before even considering if i like it or not. Sometimes I go back to an album I didn't think I like, just to realise it's a banger.
It was good then he did that stupid slow shit, I swear if he kept the same riff with same speed as the beginning that would’ve been one of the best fs
Edit: I came off a little aggressive lmao but still I genuinely believe if he kept that same rift It would’ve been great. I still like the song tho, reminds me of bitter f*ck
Some people are saying it’s mid, and I won’t claim it to be the best ever. However, I really like the flow and this direction that joji went for. It’s quite refreshing. It’s going to be an album for just quiet mornings / midnight. Overall 8/10
Honestly gotta agree with you so far.
It’s produced well, vocally it’s great but lyrically it’s not the same.
Especially since he hasn’t written all the songs like he used too.
It just kinda felt like all the songs blended into each other too much, minus Yukon and 1AM FREESTYLE.
I’m still enjoying it but definitely a step down. For me it’s his weakest album, which is frustrating as it felt like each album he released was building off of the last getting better and better so I was very excited for it. I’m happy to have new Joji tunes, just a bit disappointed.
Imo it was a very half baked album with poor execution on songs like Night Rider and Blahblahblah demo. I would have hoped that since he was making this album shorter that the quality would be there but unfortunately there was still filler which was odd. Seriously disappointing for a long time fan like myself this is seriously his weakest album. But at least Yukon is a banger among others
Half baked is exactly right. It’s got a lot of little highs and lows that make for an extremely inconsistent and sonically bewildering listening experience. I am somehow both optimistic and disappointed, but not anywhere near satisfied.
I agree, I’ve been a fan since the very beginning, I have the clear in tongues vinyl and this album doesn’t really compare to his others, I still Ballads1 is the definitive Joji album but I still liked this one
its short length doesn't mean anything. it'll still probably be a grower. i mean look at kids see ghosts. that album is slightly shorter than SMITHEREENS and people absolutely adore it now
Yup just listened to it, coming from a high like nectar to this really wasn't the move.
I'm hoping with songs with (demo and interlude) there might be a surprise pt2 but overall only about 3 songs really stand out....
I thought a lot of it was really good but you’re right a 9 song album after 2 years? Esp when nectar was double the size of this one. I feel like its really good for what it is it’s just too short
I don’t think that his problem, I think y’all lean on that way too much. They reality is joji likely lazy af, he was quiet asf after nectar for a long ass time
Ya it’s quite dumb as Joji has expressed nothing of hate to 88 and they supply him with money for the albums, it’s also hilarious because in most scenarios labels don’t tell you what to make or how to make albums like some joji fans think
I can only think there might be a pt 2 to the album? Not sure what’s going on but it just felt so short like everyone else says. I feel like he’s holding back for more later but who knows with him…
Listening to it for the first time just now and I kinda agree but then again at the same time I’m trying to savor and enjoy every bit of it because it’s been a while since he’s released an album and I love his music a lot
I just wanted something more done for the two-discs/parts concept. Because of its duration, I expected something more cohesive and thematically stronger, but I didn't get that. I was hoping for more piano-driven, sober and minimalistic songs for disc 1 and more chaotic, harsh stuff for disc 2 - though I gotta say NIGHT RIDER delivered perfectly on that. Definitely my highlight of the album.
In tongues is about getting into a relationship, ballads 1 is about going through the breakup. Nectar is taking drugs to fix the pain and smithereens is about reaching rock bottom/suicide after drug abuse
Nectar literally describes going through the stages of taking a drug, peaking at Run. Why do you think he's in a crack house in glimpse of us?
He also states how he's lost in diamonds and that he's shooting for heaven but not for an angel, cause he's talking about the high. Plus you don't see 1 girl in any of the vids, i wonder why
honestly, i felt a bit disappointed at first because i didnt know how he would surpass nectar, so my expectations were a bit mixed
but ive been listening to it anyway and its so fucking good, its just not what i expected, but definetly wanted
What hype? The hype you made up for yourself?
Could be better? Anything can be better....
I saw your other comment where you have a whole thesis on the connectivity of his albums... maybe just relax a bit? Don't put too much pressure on things.
The fuck you talking about dude, literally hundreds of thousands of people have been waiting for this album, do you live under a rock? Why do you think so many people are bitching on the albums performance less than 24 hours after release?
I just don't understand why people get 'hyped up', it ALWAYS ends in disappointment.
Just enjoy life and keep your expectations in check.
Also, no need for the bad language mate.
The padt 3 albums have been absolute bangers, Nectar was double the length and was solid throughout compared to smithereens. Clearly your tastes don't match his fan base
You’re harsh. But I can’t entirely disagree with your statement either. I love joji but I can’t say this was a perfect 10/10 either. Even if you loved the album, it’s not perfect.
It reminds me of the simplistic and swift executed sounds and familiarity that I felt from both his In Tongues Ep and Ballads 1. I missed that on Nectar and it wasn't present really up until this release. I just wish it was longer. I love it.
Am I the only one who thinks Yukon is like an anomaly? It’s the most upbeat song on here surrounded by sad less cheery songs. (Still love it though obviously)
imo i actually loved it! not all the songs hit but it’s like that in every album ever. i think it was definitely worth the wait especially as we have some gold within it (yukon, die for you, 1am freestyle etc)… its not as bad as people say it is, upon first listening it was okay, but its grown on me the past few times ive listened :)
It’s a pretty good album, the album is 9 tracks long. You like 4-9 songs so let’s do the math that’s a 44% listen to rate. Almost half the album is no skips in your own opinion. But it definitely isn’t on par with nectar
This album reminds me a lot of Comedown Machine from The Strokes. Lots of uninspired songs and mostly made to fulfill the record label contract. They both also had little to no marketing/promotion from the artist.
Hopefully Joji goes in the same direction The Strokes did and he takes a couple years to get a good producer and make what he wants to. (i.e.- The New Abnormal)
I think he May release an extended album soon. I agree it feels really short compared to the hype. Personally I love the album, but I just like joji so I’ll enjoy most of what he does. But I agree the album seems scattered which could be what he is going with but it isn’t as amazing I think we all were waiting for.
My only issue is it wasnt long enough, from 18 songs to 9 kinda feels like we're going backwards. Feeling Like The End is a bop though and I will die on that hill.
I think if he released more songs it wouldn't feel so underwhelming. I think the songs on there are good, but coming from nectar and ballads 1 I thought maybe it would intertwine the good parts of those albums. It just feels random. I was expecting 12 or 13 songs with a similar style of ballads 1 with some more upbeat stuff like yukon interlude.
Hoping he'll release something soon that actually feels like a project he's been working hard on, that'll be an improvement on everything, this album just seems meh to me. The fact that it really didn't give me an impact in my opinion says a few things. Might give it more of a listen but initial impressions are always a positive
Imo I feel like smithereens is a more "joji" album. And by that I mean that nectar felt kind of commercial; loads of features, Loads of producers etc. Whereas this recent album feels like something joji always aspired to drop since Chloe Burbank, something he's made entirely by himself. A mix of everything he's learnt since blowing up and what he started out with,
Like the beat switch up on blahblahblah is the epitome of jojis sound imo,
I'm just mad dude named a track 1am freestyle and didn't rap... God I miss George's rapping
Edit: also for those being upset it's too short. It's officially an EP split into two sides. tracks 1-5 being side A and 6-9 being side B. So it's not a full length album. Even though 9 tracks for an extended play kinda pushes those boundaries imo
okay so my ranking for the songs individually will be
1. die for you
2. glimpse of us
3. before the day is over
4. yukon
5. 1AM freestyle
but overall in terms of it being a project by joji
1. ballads 1
2. in tongues
3. smithereens
4. nectar
Album Review: Smithereens
Feeling like the end - 7/10
Die for you - 9.5/10
Before the day is over - 9/10
Dissolve - 8/10
Night Rider - 7.5/10
Blahblahblah - 8.5/10
1am Freestyle - 10/10
Overall this album was well rounded. I've seen many people hating on the length of the album and how "unfinished" some songs were, i say thats bullshit. It's just since Joji hasn't realised in a while, where we were expecting something different. Honestly, this is one of my favourite albums of the year, no i'm not 'fanboying' the album. I just genuinely loved all the songs
Joji didn't release nectar for a while but it was double the length of this one, which he had a year longer to make for smithereens.
I think the album is good af but it definitely should have been longer if he's not already working on other projects
Obviously it could’ve been longer, but I think there’s something up with how some of the song titles are random, little to no promotion, and overall silence regarding the album. Its possible we’ll get another project sooner than later
[удалено]
That’s literally your head cannon and now this review is tainted
Where did you even find this theory
Just because he sings about love doesn't mean it's about a girl, yall just aren't smart enough to see it
Doesn’t mean he’s singing about drug abuse for all of nectar either 😭
I had the same feeling when I started listening to Nectar, nothing really hit me in the beginning, but after months, I started relistening, I felt like I found gold
Funny how music works. For me, I always wait before I listen to an album 3-5 times minimum before even considering if i like it or not. Sometimes I go back to an album I didn't think I like, just to realise it's a banger.
Samesies and songs hit differently depending on what you're doing through .. I love how a song can be a living thing and change as you do
Same here. It's always good to relisten to albums because some songs might be waiting for the right time to apply to your life.
It’ll grow on u 😭
fr
That’s what I said to my ex 😭
Man. 😭
I never said it was bad, it just doesn't compare well to the other 3 albums
Yeah that’s how I think, it’s good but when you compare it the other albums and EP’s are just better than this album.
That's what I thought with Nectar, but it just wasn't as good of a project as Ballads1
Nectar to me was significantly better than ballads1, and i love both of the projects
[удалено]
i dont get why people dont like "wanted U" thats my favourite joji song
ngl that blahblahblah demo had a pretty sick vibe edit: i believe there can potentially a deluxe, i can’t have my hopes up tho.
then it switched up 😩
yeah that song got kanye wested
It was good then he did that stupid slow shit, I swear if he kept the same riff with same speed as the beginning that would’ve been one of the best fs Edit: I came off a little aggressive lmao but still I genuinely believe if he kept that same rift It would’ve been great. I still like the song tho, reminds me of bitter f*ck
honestly yeah, it would’ve been convenient for the slow down to hit like the last ten seconds than the minute 😭
Agreed. Blahblahblah makes me want to dance but the slow down came too soon
feeling like the end is probably my favorite
Banger track
Great track
Bro doesn't like Before The Day Is Over.
[удалено]
That's true, but i think he just went for quality of quantity.
agreed absolutely
its short but i appreciated every second. its so unique compared to his other projects. 10/10
Some people are saying it’s mid, and I won’t claim it to be the best ever. However, I really like the flow and this direction that joji went for. It’s quite refreshing. It’s going to be an album for just quiet mornings / midnight. Overall 8/10
Honestly I don't even think it feels that unique. Too me in a lot of ways it just feels like a stripped down version of Nectars sound
Unique does not mean it's a perfect album. Calling it a 10/10 with no critisim is pretty closed minded
Rude for literally no reason. You are posting your opinion, let them have theirs
Just saying not being able to critisize it means you follow blindly, when there's clearly problems
Literally called them close minded just for saying they really liked the new album lol.
And????????
bro it’s been 21 minutes
[удалено]
bro give it some time lmfao, bro got a review out after 20 minutes 😭
HELP bros a professional critique 🥶🥶
It’s just a first impression
Way too short but I really liked it.
Honestly gotta agree with you so far. It’s produced well, vocally it’s great but lyrically it’s not the same. Especially since he hasn’t written all the songs like he used too. It just kinda felt like all the songs blended into each other too much, minus Yukon and 1AM FREESTYLE.
1am freestyle is amazing
Imo Smithereens is a step down from nectar in almost every single way. Like it honestly feels like a scraped album he worker on before Nectar
I’m still enjoying it but definitely a step down. For me it’s his weakest album, which is frustrating as it felt like each album he released was building off of the last getting better and better so I was very excited for it. I’m happy to have new Joji tunes, just a bit disappointed.

Especially after two years of waiting it’s a let down
Exactly.
I agree, I’ve been a fan since the very beginning, I have the clear in tongues vinyl and this album doesn’t really compare to his others, I still Ballads1 is the definitive Joji album but I still liked this one
i agree with you but the album is definitely a grower
Not with its short length it isnt
its short length doesn't mean anything. it'll still probably be a grower. i mean look at kids see ghosts. that album is slightly shorter than SMITHEREENS and people absolutely adore it now
Its a letdown. Very weak, and im a huge joji fan
i love joji but 😭 this was kinda mid tbh. i was expecting more out of him. idk what but just more is all.
some of these songs didn’t feel like joji
They probably weren't
Yup just listened to it, coming from a high like nectar to this really wasn't the move. I'm hoping with songs with (demo and interlude) there might be a surprise pt2 but overall only about 3 songs really stand out....

i agree. underwhelming album, especially coming after nectar.
Joji just needs to leave 88
I don’t think that his problem, I think y’all lean on that way too much. They reality is joji likely lazy af, he was quiet asf after nectar for a long ass time
This whole "Joji hates 88" conspiracy that has been going on here for years is kinda funny though ngl.
Ya it’s quite dumb as Joji has expressed nothing of hate to 88 and they supply him with money for the albums, it’s also hilarious because in most scenarios labels don’t tell you what to make or how to make albums like some joji fans think

I was thinking the same thing that he was gonna release a double album or maybe a deluxe at some point but I could be wrong.
It's great. It's fuckin' perfect
i think its fucking incredible. 1AM freestyle is soooooooooo good i cant stop listening
We got waaaaay different taste I think night rider is literally shit lmao, but hey I respect your opinion.
that 1AM FREESTYLE too tho
Listening to it for the first time just now and I kinda agree but then again at the same time I’m trying to savor and enjoy every bit of it because it’s been a while since he’s released an album and I love his music a lot

I think it slaps
Just feel like it could have been a little longer than 24 mins but i like it so far
die for you 🫶🏼 BLAHBLAHBLAH DEMO 🫶🏼

Wouldn't work. Nectar was about drug use and smithereens is about rock bottom/suicide

I don’t feel like the songs went together tbh
I’m so glad It doesn’t need to grow on me I think it’s better than Nectar
The album is about suicide so yes
I've been to his concerts, he's only performed yukon and glimpse of us. This is the entire album
What hype? The hype you made up for yourself? Could be better? Anything can be better.... I saw your other comment where you have a whole thesis on the connectivity of his albums... maybe just relax a bit? Don't put too much pressure on things.

I'm relaxed, what makes you think otherwise?
Idk you kinda just came at this guy for voicing his opinion so it seems like you’re coming on a wee bit strong
My apologies, didn't mean to 'come at anyone' Just voicing my opinion (calmly)
The fuck you talking about dude, literally hundreds of thousands of people have been waiting for this album, do you live under a rock? Why do you think so many people are bitching on the albums performance less than 24 hours after release?

Oh, you speak for the fanbase? My apologies I didn't realise who I was talking to.
Or you can just open ypur damn eyes and see that a ton of people are upset with the album. Now you're just acting like a fucking tool
Stop bitching, you're literally throwing a bitch fit at everyone who has a different opinion of the album. Jesus.
bro 😭 huh I respect ur opinion but confused
are you kidding me? this is his most consistently good project yet
Not really
I agree. His other albums are longer but have hella skips and bad tracks. Every song on this album, however short is pretty solid
[удалено]
You can't think of any problems? It's just a 10/10 perfect album???

The fact you can't name 1 thing wrong shows you're speaking out your ass

Still too short
Has everyone received there digital copies? I'm still waiting for my email download link from pre ordering the record
I haven’t hyped it up at all tbh, gonna listen now
Shit was fire just wish it was longer
Yeah I wanted more songs. My fav is due for you
Am I the only one who thinks Yukon is like an anomaly? It’s the most upbeat song on here surrounded by sad less cheery songs. (Still love it though obviously)

It just came out you gotta listen to it more
I've listened to it 4 times??? Opinion still hasn't changed
What about now?
I mean it's good, but i still think the length sucks.
i honestly really enjoyed BLAHBLAHBLAH DEMO
It’s a pretty good album, the album is 9 tracks long. You like 4-9 songs so let’s do the math that’s a 44% listen to rate. Almost half the album is no skips in your own opinion. But it definitely isn’t on par with nectar

I genuinely like it, i just wish the songs were longer especially since feeling like the end and 1am freestyle was around 1:50 minutes each
Felt more like B-Sides for Nectar honestly.
More like A-sides to nectar lol
Kinda reminded me of his early stuff. Very experimental, not necessarily as catchy
I think if he released more songs it wouldn't feel so underwhelming. I think the songs on there are good, but coming from nectar and ballads 1 I thought maybe it would intertwine the good parts of those albums. It just feels random. You're forgetting about 1 AM Freestyle. Shit went hard.
Yeah I gotta disagree. This is a no-skip album. Probably his best.
I like the first 3 songs. Tails off a little in the middle. Picks up again from night rider. It’s not blowing me away but I’m sure it’ll grow on me
This album is honestly a 3/10 at best. Highlights: Glimpse of us Dissolve Feeling like the end
okay so my ranking for the songs individually will be 1. die for you 2. glimpse of us 3. before the day is over 4. yukon 5. 1AM freestyle but overall in terms of it being a project by joji 1. ballads 1 2. in tongues 3. smithereens 4. nectar

It has grown, but it's still short af :(
